Head Coach 8th Season

ilich

Long Beach State, 1978

Tom Milich recently finished his eighth season as head coach of the Cal Poly swimming and diving program. Since the 2006-07 season, Milich has guided the development of swimmers who have broken all 28 school records in individual events (often several times over), as well as relay teams that have established program records at every distance. He has sent swimmers to the NCAA Championships in four of the past five years, saw two divers advance to the NCAA Zone E Qualifying Meet last season and has coached 19 individual conference champions while with the Mustangs. The program’s student-athletes have earned conference all-academic honors 88 times during his tenure (including 14 this past winter). Additionally, among men and women, the team had a 100-percent graduation success rate within the cycle observed from 2006 through 2012, as well as a perfect Academic Progress Rate score (1,000 out of a possible 1,000) in 2011-12. Also on Milich’s watch, the program saw a renovation of its primary facility, Anderson Aquatic Center, in September 2009. Featuring eight 50-meter lanes and eighteen 25-yard lanes, as well as an accompanying 15-by-30-foot

(all-shallow) therapy pool, the Myrthabuilt venue serves as a state-of-the-art location ideally suited for year-round training. The upcoming 2014-15 season will be the Cal Poly men’s team’s fifth year competing in the Pac-12 Conference, as well as the women’s program’s fifth year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. To close the 2013-14 season, Mustang sophomore Sonny Fierro earned All-America honorable mention status in the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing 15th at the NCAA Championships hosted by Texas, with a time of 14 minutes, 56.01 seconds. He scored two points to put Cal Poly a half-point ahead of Georgia Tech. Four other Mustangs also put their names on the initial entry list for the meet, while a fifth also had a qualifying time. At the end of the previous year, Cal Poly senior Rachel O’Brien also made it to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 18th in the 200 butterfly in Indianapolis. In the program’s final season in the Big West, Milich coached the Mustangs to third-place finishes on both the men’s and women’s sides at the conference championships, the highest-ever for

the school. Also in 2009-10, Cal Poly’s Peter Kline qualified for the NCAA Championships held at Ohio State in three events, a feat he would repeat as a senior in 2010-11 at Minnesota. (In the latter year, Kline was second in the 400 individual medley at the Pac-10 finals, a finish that Fierro would match in his premier race at the Pac-12 meet a season ago.) Altogether, Milich is a 12-time recipient of the ASCA Coach of Excellence award, including most recently in December 2010. For 16 years before he arrived at Cal Poly, Milich served as the Aquatics Director for the Clovis Swim Club. During that time, he coached five swimmers who went on to represent the U.S. in international competition, while seven ultimately competed at the NCAA Championships. From 1989 to 1992, Milich was the head men’s water polo coach at Fresno State. During that time, he was also an NCAA representative for U.S. Water Polo and served on the NCAA regional advisory committee. In 1988, Milich was an assistant coach for the U.S.’ silver medal-winning Olympic men’s water polo team. He was also a staff member for the 1991 gold medal-winning World Championships squad and the silver-winning team at the Pan American Games. Prior to his collegiate and international experience, Milich coached 61 All-Americans at the high school level, including future Olympians Janet Evans, John Moffet and John Mykkanen. During that time, he was honored with the California Swimming Coach of the Year award in 1987 while at El Dorado High School. Milich graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in biology in 1978, and went on to earn his teaching credential in 1980. He played water polo for the 49ers. He currently lives in Arroyo Grande with his wife and two daughters.

Assistant Coach • 13th Season • Cal Poly, 2001 Phil Yoshida recently finished his 13th season as an assistant coach for the Mustangs. Yoshida was a standout swimmer at Cal Poly from 1999 through 2001 while earning his degree in biological sciences. He specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley. During the two years he swam for the Mustangs, Yoshida had top team finishes in the 200 breaststroke, the 200 IM and the 400 IM. Yoshida also placed in the top eight at the Big West Championships twice in the 200

breast and 400 IM. He also earned conference swimmer of the week honors during the 2000-01 season. From 2001 to 2007, Yoshida worked in the fruit science department at Cal Poly, managing the citrus, avocado and deciduous orchards on campus. He now enjoys growing fruit trees in his backyard as a hobby. Since 2007, he has coached at the San Luis Obispo Swim Club. He coaches athletes of all ages and has led several to the national level while preparing them for collegiate success at various universities.

Starting as a walk-on for the Aggies, Stricker earned a scholarship with the program as a senior. Continuing her accomplishments during her final season at UC Davis, Stricker set a low-board school record (at 265.80) and qualified for the Zone Championships. As a junior, she finished third on both the 1-m and 3-m boards at the Big West Conference Championships. Stricker graduated with a degree in exercise biology in 2011 as part of the school’s first class of Division I student-athletes.

Anderson Aquatic center Named in honor of Dick Anderson, the head coach at Cal Poly from 1947-48 to 1976-77, Anderson Aquatic Center opened in 2009. The Myrtha-built pool, which can use eight 50-meter lanes and eighteen 25-yard lanes, contains nonporous stainless steel on the sides and concrete topped with polyvinyl liner on the bottom. Thanks to its drain-off system, the water stays flat. AAC also includes a 15-by-30-foot therapy pool, which is always kept at 85 degrees.

Program History

Note: All event distances listed in the following pages are in yards unless specifically noted to be in meters. Cal Poly initially competed at the Division I level through the 1962-63 season. The program was then classified in the College Division from 1963-64 through 1972-73; during this time, however, teams were able to also compete against Division I. From 1973-74 through 1993-94, the Mustangs swam and dove in Division II, before becoming Division I again in 1994-95. Cal Poly joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association for swimming and diving in 1946-47, becoming the conference’s sixth member.

With the exception of a fiveyear hiatus from 1979-80 through 1983-84, when the program competed as an independent, the Mustangs stayed in the CCAA until transitioning to the Big West Conference in 1994-95. The team then moved up to the Pac-12 in 2010-11. The first woman to swim for Cal Poly was Laurie Morgan, in 1973-74. On a team basis, Cal Poly’s women’s squad first competed at the intercollegiate level in 1977-78, as a member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women

(as the NCAA didn’t hold a women’s national championships meet until 1981-82). The Mustangs were at first in the AIAW’s Large College Division (the contemporary equivalent to Division I of the NCAA) before moving to its Division II affiliation in 1979-80. The women’s program first competed in the Southern California Athletic Association until 1984-85, when it moved to the CCAA. The team then joined the Big West in 1994-95 before moving to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2010-11.

(Freshmen were not allowed to compete at the time, hence why he didn’t go in ’58-59.) In 1978-79, Heather Davis became the first All-American in any women’s sport at Cal Poly. Her 100 breaststroke school record of 1:04.55 stood for 31 years (an all-time program record in any event, for either men or women). Davis went on to qualify for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter breast by winning the event at that year’s Santa Clara Invitational, in 1:14.4. 1979 AIAW Large College National Championships at Trees Pool (Pittsburgh)

University Archives, California Polytechnic State University The first woman to swim for Cal Poly — and in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in general — was Laurie Morgan, in 1973-74. After a youth career in which she helped set three American records in relays within the 15-17 age group, Morgan became the Mustangs’ top 1,000-yard freestyler (including men) as a freshman. She earned her first win in the event at a dual meet versus UC Riverside on Jan. 26, 1974, in 10 minutes, 51 seconds. Pictured above in the Mustang Daily, Morgan also competed against men at the CCAA finals that season, coming in 14th place in the 200 free, with a prelims time of 1:56.81 (which ranked ahead of six men’s times). She then advanced to the women’s AAU indoor national meet in Dallas. Morgan laid the foundation for the 1978-79 Mustangs, who won the Southern California Athletic Association title to become the first women’s team in any sport to win a conference championship at Cal Poly.
