THE
LOOP FALL 2016 Professor Brian Ayash leads Orfalea students on an International Business Tour to Germany in September.
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful summer and is excited to embark on the new academic year. My main goals during my remaining time at Cal Poly are to maintain momentum, poise the college for the dean search, and prepare for the maintenance of accreditation review in fall 2017. We have a highly capable leadership team in place that will be pursuing initiatives on the 2016-17 annual plan. Expect to see a continuation of engagement outside the college through executives in residence, alumni events, student tours, and solicitations. We will welcome ten new members to the Dean’s Advisory Council meeting in October and start them on an ambitious agenda that includes planning for an outstanding alumni event in the Bay Area in fall 2017. An all faculty meeting is scheduled for October 11 during which we will discuss an initiative to split the FAC into two separate committees — one for RPT and one to facilitate faculty governance. I strongly believe that the voice of faculty at large is missing under the current

structure, and that needed work that relies on faculty governance, such as revising the RPT document, is not occurring. A ballot will be prepared for a faculty vote after the meeting. I will be returning on a contract basis to oversee writing the maintenance of accreditation report, and will participate in the pre-visit by the chair of the Peer Review Team and if possible, in the PRT’s visit next fall. Preparing for and hosting the review will be a team effort by primarily Kevin Lertwachara, Sanjiv Jaggia, Stern Neill, Amy Carter and Beena Khurana. The maintenance review is an opportunity for the college to improve by receiving input from experienced deans with different perspectives. While I believe we have numerous practices that are worthy of commendation and will have a successful review, we should expect that the PRT will offer suggestions for improvement. All of our journeys ultimately require accepting the reality of impermanence, but I can’t avoid leaving with a heavy heart. I have been honored to work with you, our amazing students and alumni, and the entire Cal Poly community the last two years. You are part of a great institution with a proud history and very compelling mission. All the best,
Scott Dawson, Dean Orfalea College of Business

BUILDING RENOVATION UPDATE: 3RD FLOOR COMPUTER LAB This summer, Orfalea saw a complete overhaul of the third-floor computer lab. In place of many of the aging, stationary PCs and the large helpdesk, now are more collaborative and lounge spaces. Previously, the college lacked spaces for students to sit and study between classes or to work in groups. The new lab configuration hopes to provide both of those. One room will be a quiet lounge for study, while the main open computer lab will house tutoring spaces, meeting tables, circular couches and mobile dry-erase partitions — all aimed at letting students meet and brainstorm together.
