Commencement August 5, 2017 – Irvine, CA
Contents A Message from the Founder California Southern University’s annual commencement ceremony is a singularly moving and inspirational event. Of course, we gather to celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of our graduates. But it is much more than that. It is about challenges overcome. Dreams that long lay dormant, now fulfilled. Sacrifices made so that goals could be achieved. The loving support of family and friends. A future without limits. Today, as each graduate walks across the stage, you will learn a bit about their personal journeys and where they are headed—and you will see what I mean. On behalf of the entire university, welcome to California Southern University’s commencement ceremony!

2017 PRESIDENT’S AWARD
2017 STUDENT & KEynote SPEAKER
Dr. Margaret Hock’s doctoral project is titled “A Study on Experiences of Marital Satisfaction on Air Force Couples.”
Sara Gilman is a nationally known Psychotherapist and speaker. She has appeared on news networks, radio shows, and conferences as an expert in her field. She obtained her Bachelors degree from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN., in 1981, her Master’s of Science Degree in Clinical Psychology, from California State University, Fullerton, in 1983. She holds specialty certifications in Hypnosis, NLP, HeartMath, Critical Incident Stress Management, and EMDR. She was awarded Fellowship status with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, and is Past-President of the EMDR International Association. As a former fire fighter/EMT, she has a passion for working with 1st Responders, as well as athletes and performers of all kinds. After 25 years as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, in 2012, Sara and her son, Jeremy Larsen, Co-Founded COHERENCE ASSOCIATES, INC., (CAI) a counseling corporation in Encinitas, CA. The CAI team of counselors is dedicated to expanding human potential through the coherence of mind, body & spirit, with clinical excellence, integrity, and compassion.
This qualitative study conducted with eight Air Force couples regarding the effects that multiple deployments have on marital satisfaction provides rich information that has the potential to shape Department of Defense policy regarding deployments. The human factors related to operating the most sophisticated equipment in the arm forces and mission readiness deserves prominent recognition. Margaret Hock School of Behavioral Sciences
Dr. Hock’s study explored the sources of stress and moderating influences on the couple’s marital relationship satisfaction. Specific focus was given to multiple deployments and the stress of changing military orders. Results of this study highlighted the effects stress on marital satisfaction and will provide future intervention recommendations for DoD institutional program changes.
Sara Gilman
Her dream of completing her doctoral degree became a reality after being invited to speak in the CalSouthern Master Lecture Series, when Dr. Grimes heard her lecture at a Veterans conference. After meeting the CalSouthern family, she found the environment to offer the academic rigor, quality clinical curriculum, and accreditation. As a doctoral student, she presented 3 more lectures in the Master Series, and has completed her PsyD with a special certification in Sport Psychology. Sara plans to expand her research with first responders, and continue her public speaking endeavors.
Dr. Thomas Zhao presented a doctoral project in which the purpose of the quantitative study was to find other alternative methods to make further improvements to help investors achieve a better result on forecasting returns and risk measurements of stock. Money managers, analysts, investors might apply several methods to estimate beta values in the financial world. Beta values generated by different methods might vary. Analysts might apply different lengths of time to estimate betas and might use many ways of adjustment methods such as Value Line approach and Merrill Lynch approach. As a result, the accuracy of estimating the returns and risks could be a challenge.
Thomas Zhao School of Business
California Southern University 2017
During her studies at CalSouthern, her oldest son Jeremy Larsen, enrolled, and is graduating today as well. Her younger son, Dr. Seth Larsen, completed medical school, and is now a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Senior Resident, in the family medicine program at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital.
This study provided recommendations to money managers regarding which beta value to use to predict the risk level of a stock and to estimate a stock return for their customers. The research area of prediction of beta from investment fundamentals was recommended for future research.
