New Gear Here in our school, we are very fortunate to be able to afford improvements, including up to date equipment. Every issue, this article will highlight a new item in the school. Recently, some new keyboards were ordered for the Music department; this is going to be useful for many year groups who are currently using them in their lessons. As you would probably guess, they are black around the actual keyboard and include a range of different songs on them. They do not have keyboard expression (how loud the note is depending

on how much pressure is applied to the key). Instead they have volume control. Hopefully, this is something you may be using in your lessons and you get the chance to enjoy using them. In addition to this, there is now a new minibus at school which is a Peugeot Boxer. It can seat 16 people and the driver. The minibus is different from the other minibuses because it has many clever features such as: a reversing camera, CCTV, a TV and a disabled ramp.

run on diesel. However, it is eco-friendly. Mr Stokes loves to drive it and many others have commented on how nice it is to drive. It has an emergency stop on ignition key, meaning the engine will stop when the ignition switch is pushed 3 consecutive times. The minibus has been to many places so far, for example London. We look forward to using it to go on many more trips.

The seats in this minibus are in perfect condition and are so comfortable. Also the seats can be removed to seat a wheelchair. When this happens, the minibus can seat 12 people. It can reach up to 62 miles per hour and is

Marvellous Movies Here’s some reviews on the latest cinema blockbusters to go and check out! So go grab some popcorn and read about the unmissable movies of this year so far. One of the most anticipated movies of early 2017 is Rogue One. This movie shows how cinema can be a magnificent work of art as the planets were detailed in every element. This story starts as former Imperial scientist, Galen Erso, is captured by the Imperials and seeks to construct one of the deadliest weapons in the galaxy, the Death Star. The Imperials plan to use the Death Star plans, located on Scarif. Daughter of Galen, Jyn (Felicity Jones), is told by her own father to stop the Imperials’ plans. With help from the Rebellion and unexpected companions, Jyn travels to Scarif to intercept the plans and stop the Imperials. This movie gives all characters their own personalities and makes the audience attached to them. There are parts in the movie where you can see the detail put into each environment and admire the view.

As the movie progresses, you can see the change in the characters, with the interaction they show to the others. One example is that Jyn was distrustful about the Rebellion. However, as the movie progressed, she gave them her trust and continued with her quest. This is a movie full of life and full of entertaining moments, but also powerful ones. This makes Rogue One more powerful as the story progresses. In the end I give it a 9/10 for its memorable characters and story development. This is a must watch for new fans and old fans of the Star Wars Movies.

Review of Assassin’s Creed (movie) Rated 6.4 When Callum Lynch explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society. Age Group: 12+ any children underage must be supervised by an adult - moderate violence. Opinion: When I watched this film I was amazed how much tension was built up at the beginning and how, as you progressed into the film, it got more thrilling and actionpacked… I loved the scenes when Cal (as he was referred to in the film) was thrown into the memories of his ancestor, it was truly breath-taking!

Inside the Phoenix Suite This is an article uncovering the deepest realm of the first floor, inhabited by all sorts of people, and more commonly known as the Phoenix suite… This article aims to inform you about what exactly happens behind closed doors. The Phoenix is filled with the friendliest and coolest members of staff and students, along with the best and most relaxing facilities to help you learn. Filled with hues of tranquil blue and cool cucumber green, along with its very own fish tank filled with colourful aquatic life, you’ll literally feel like you’ve emerged from under the sea. The atmosphere itself is so calm and peaceful… Not always. Be warned: in this fantastical marine area lurk little and big monsters! Only kidding! The seating area is super welcoming and makes you feel at ease with the world. It is such a calm and quiet area to work one to one with a teacher or catch up with anything. You’ll never be lonely in the Phoenix Suite and might even make a new friend. I know for myself personally, it was my social hub to hang out with my friends and nibble my food. My best memories of the Phoenix suite are definitely the parties that we throw at Christmas and at the

10

end of the year! So much laughter and cheer filling the air, colourful decoration everywhere, food of all sorts; it’s just the best vibe ever, to see those who deserve it most and have worked so hard enjoying themselves. We truly have a blast! Don’t be fooled, though, there can also be trouble in paradise. The fights, the drama, people winding each other up. But while these things happen, the friendships that are made here are truly amazing and are definitely made to last! Charity events have also happened here in the past, such as an enterprise fair, and it is a great place to go and give back to your community. For example, there is a small room in the Phoenix called the chill room, where students can be mentored and there’s a kitchen for students to eat their lunches. When you work hard you should play hard! So the Phoenix is fully equipped with an Xbox 360 and Wii for lunchtimes. Lastly, there is always a smiling face to cheer you

up and make you laugh when you feel down, sad or depressed. That’s everything to know about the Phoenix Suite. What a welcoming place!

Teacher in the spotlightOur first teacher in the spotlight is our very own headteacher of Caludon Castle, the one, the only, Mrs Marr. I met up with this wonderful woman and I got to find out more about the person behind the office. Enjoy! What do you love most about Caludon Castle School?

the hard work of our talented students.

The students, because they are confident and they value learning. They make me extremely proud at times to be the head of this school.

What do you like doing outside of school?

What made you decide to become a headteacher? I wanted to make a difference to the lives of young people in Coventry. I feel very lucky and fortunate to do be able to do just that every day and I enjoy doing it too. When did you start teaching? I started teaching in 1982 which was almost 35 years ago. Wow! Who inspires you most and why? JK Rowling because she got what she wanted and never gave up until she succeeded and accomplished her dreams. Also she became rich whilst doing it, so that’s an added bonus. What was your worst subject at school? Definitely Art and Music as I found it hard and wasn’t as skilled. They were still enjoyable and I love both Art 14and Music, especially admiring

I love cooking, especially baking up different treats for everyone. Outside of school, I enjoy exercise and even race for charity such as the Race For Life. I did it last year and managed to raise £100 for charity. It felt really good to give back to those who are less fortunate, through something I love to do. What is your ideal day out? Ooh, well my ideal day out would usually involve shopping, shopping and more shopping with my daughter, as it’s great to spend time with her and catch up. Afterwards, we’d have an elegant and fancy lunch and a cocktail in a very exclusive and posh restaurant such as Bella Italia. What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you? The year before last, I was walking down the corridor and I accidentally slipped and fell flat on my face. The worst part was that everyone could see.

I love watching soaps such as Emmerdale, Casualty and Holby City but I also really enjoy period dramas (dramas set in different historical eras) like Downtown Abbey. I loved watching the Night manager because I think the lead actor, Tom Hiddleston was very good looking and handsome. Maybe he can be the next James Bond. What is your favourite Disney movie? My favourite Disney movies are Sleeping Beauty and Mary Poppins. If you haven’t seen them, why not snuggle up with your TV/tablet, a blanket, some chocolate and a big bucket of popcorn and watch them? What is your favourite dance move? I am a qualified Latin American dance instructor so any Latin American dance move would be my favorite. Sorry, no dabbing from me! What is your favourite food? My favourite food or meal is definitely seabass.

Oh no!

Do you have any pets?

What shows do you enjoy watching?

No I don’t, but I would absolutely love to have a school dog!

- Mrs Marr “The students, because they are confident and value learning. They make me extremely proud...” If you had one wish, what would it be? If I had one wish, I would love to have my twin brother back. Which would you rather wear, skirt or jeans? I prefer to wear a skirt as it is more professional and comfortable but I often like to wear jeans at the weekend. Which do you prefer, Apple or Samsung?

Having banter with the Head Apple because it’s a lot easier to use and it’s perfect for schools. Lastly, what changes are being put in place for the upcoming year?

Mrs Marr working hard to keep this school ship hape.

Well there are many exciting changes and opportunities being put in place for all you students. I have purchased a new

minibus, which now also includes wheelchair access and a TV. Also I have given students the opportunity to suggest interim graduation rewards.

Jester’s Juggling Jokes Laughing makes you feel good and relieves any stress, anger or anxiety. So come and laugh with us! Time to chill with your mag as we provide you with some hilarious LOLS! Remember to laugh as loud as possible!

The four most beautiful words in our common language: I told you so.

Q: What did the duck say when he bought lipstick? A: “Put it on my bill.”

I dreamt I was forced to eat a giant marshmallow. When I woke up, my pillow was gone.

A man got hit hard in the head with a can of 7Up. He’s alright though, it was a soft drink.

Doctor: Hello, did you come to see me with an eye problem?

Why do the French like to eat snails so much?

Patient: Wow, yes, how can you tell? Doctor: Because you came in through the window instead of the door. Police officer: “Can you identify yourself, sir?” Driver pulls out his mirror and says: “Yes, it’s me.” What happens to a frog’s car when it breaks down? It gets toad away. My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.

They can’t stand fast food. After many years of studying at a university, I’ve finally become a PhD… or Pizza Hut Deliveryman as people call it. I just got a photo from a speeding camera through the mail. I sent it right back – way too expensive and really bad quality.

water and give the person a spoon, a cup and a bucket. Then we ask that person to empty the bathtub.” The man smiles: “Ah, I understand, if you are sane you would take the bucket.” The Psychiatrist replies: “No, a sane guy pulls the plug. Do you want a room with or without a balcony?” Pessimist: “Things just can’t get any worse!” Optimist: “Nah, of course they can!” A snowman sniffs, “Hm, funny, I smell carrots…”

A man to a psychiatrist: “How do you select who should be admitted to your facility?” The psychiatrist replies: “We fill a bathtub with

Brilliant Books Are you a die hard bookworm? Looking to read the next big bestseller to sink your teeth into? Read what our journalists have to say about their favourite books. Book review: Billionaire Boy Author: David Walliams Star rating: 5 stars About the book: Billionaire Boy is a book about a boy called Joe Spud, who is a VERY rich child. He has all he could wish for. But what Joe really wants is a friend. He wants to find someone who doesn’t want to be his friend because of his money, but because they like him. Best bit: When David Walliams lists the top ten teachers’ favourite catchphrases (found on page 104-106) Book Review: Alex Rider Ark Angel Author: Anthony Horowitz Age Group: 11-16 Star Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5. About the book: This is the sixth book in the Alex Rider series and after being shot in the chest by a sniper in the fifth book, terrorists break in and try to capture Paul Drevin, son of billionaire Nikolei Drevin, who was staying in the room next to Alex. Unwilling to see his friend get hurt, Alex deliberately pretends to be 18

Paul which leads to him getting put in danger by the terrorist group, Force Three. He gets captured and after proving he’s not Paul Drevin, Force Three burn the building Alex has been taken hostage in. However, Alex manages to escape from Force Three and Paul’s father invites him to see his Ark Angel project launched, since Alex put his life on the line for Paul. Whilst travelling with Paul, Alex is told by the CIA that Nikolei Drevin is a mastermind criminal and they want Alex to put a stop to Drevin’s Ark Angel launch so the CIA can arrest him. And once again it’s up to our 14-year-old spy to put an end to Drevin. But as always nothing is ever as it seems… My Opinion Of The Book: Out of the Alex Rider books I have read, this has been the best by far. It’s full of sudden, sharp decisions, nothing is ever as it seems, and just when you think you’re safe, it takes a turn for the worst. The reason I enjoyed this book so much is because every tiny detail counts for a massive detail in the big picture. Also, when Alex is stuck in a bad situation you

ask yourself, ‘What would I do in a situation like that?’ and then say, ‘I never thought of that before!’ when Alex manages to escape. This adds to the fun of the book. Book Review: Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Double down. Author: Jeff Kinney Age group: 8+ Star Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 About the book: This is the eleventh book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and after reading about Greg’s hectic journey through middle school in the previous books, it’s pretty obvious he can’t put down his video game controller. In this book it’s hallowe’en and that means Marina Mendoza’s legendary annual party is coming up. Greg needs to find a way to get an invitation whilst being under the pressure of his mum to put down the controller. Not only is he being nagged by his parents to explore his creative side, but his street is also invaded by geese! This is a recipe for disaster for Greg and as always causes major problems in his life. As if that’s not enough the hallowe’en frights are coming

Brilliant Books at him from every angle, sparking an idea. Will doubling down on the idea just double Greg’s troubles? Read the book to find out. My opinion: Out of all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series books, I think it’s by far one of the best. I would definitely recommend it as, although the main plot runs throughout the story, it has many different side plots as well. I really enjoyed reading it because every time you think Greg has solved his problem, it turns out he has just caused a bigger one for himself. This gives the book humour and craziness, thus leaving you unable to put it down.

Book Review: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Author: JK Rowling Star Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 Opinion: This book is really good because it’s descriptive and includes lots of information about Harry Potter and the Dursleys. Book Review: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Author: JK Rowling Star Rating: 5 stars out of 5 Opinion: This is a good book because it has lots of action so you should definitely pick up a copy of the book.

Uncovering Sixth Form Becoming a Sixth Former Once you become a year 11 student, you have the choice of going to sixth form or going to college. To get into sixth form, you must fill out an application form, attend an interview with Mrs Waring, or one ot the other sixth form team members, and get good GCSE/BTEC grades before finally enrolling. What do you get when you become a sixth former? When you join sixth form what do you gain? I hear you ask. Well, you gain a lot, such as free periods where you have no classes for a whole period and instead are given the chance to revise for your exams or finish any work that needs to be completed. Also you have you own sixth form area which is off limits to other years, and you can play music any time you like. If you are a sixth form you have your own sixth form garden where you can go anytime

20

Another thing you get to do in sixth form is be first in the lunch line so if there is a long lunch line, you don’t have to wait. Also in any of your free periods you can leave school and come back later as long as you have a lanyard. The only downside to sixth form is the work, you get more homework and classwork. What can you learn in sixth form? In sixth form you can learn about anything. The type of classes you can take can be anything from Science, if you want to be a doctor, to Art , if you want to become an artist.

Story Time! Read this amazing short story written by year 7, Caden Hadley. Enjoy!

I held the key tightly, took a deep breath, and started to follow the footprints. Sightings of the beast all pointed to this direction. To measure the footprints imprinted in the snow, I put mine in, only to find that I was shivering even more. So this is why they called him “big foot”. The print was about five times the length of mine; bearing in mind I am a fully-grown man. With a slight hesitation beforehand, I started to follow the trail once again. It had been six exhausting, long hours and I was starting to grow weak. The ferocious winds blew me an inch every minute or so. It felt like I was getting nowhere. And the labyrinth of trees didn’t help either. But the one thing that I had to remember, even through these atrocious conditions, was don’t drop the key, because if I did, I would not be able to return to my world again. This was the ONLY key that could open dimensional doors. And yes, I was in a different, peculiar dimension, for the good of my world. So the beast did not attack us and wipe us out in one swipe. That was why I was there... I’d finally made it through the trees. Yes!!! But as the

trees were disappearing out of view, so were the footprints. The snow must have blown with that tornado of a wind and covered up the evidence. I was left, deserted, in the middle of nowhere, so I set camp up in a cave inside of a snow mountain, lit a fire, and fell asleep on a ragged, spiked log. THUD! THUD!! THUD!!! The noise grew louder in the cave. I was hidden behind the almost impossible-tosleep-on log, breathing harder than a man who had just run a marathon. What could it be? Was this the beast’s home? Had I disturbed him? All these questions felt meaningless when I asked myself... Would I survive?

Iraq Do you want to know more about Iraq? Do you want to find out about the beauty behind the war torn country? Do you enjoy travelling? Here is my trip to Iraq and how Iraq has changed a British young person’s perspective on life. So, Iraq is probably the most taboo country ever, with it being in the headlines probably like 20 million times per week in the press. As someone who has been to the country, for reasons not linked to extremism or Jihad, let me tell you about this beautiful country. Iraq is home to many different kinds of people and has lots of cities, and some of these cities hold important religious monuments too. However, though many cities are relatively rural, it has many modern facilities and holds some hidden jewels. Whilst staying in a religious city in the centre of Iraq, I found televisions, XBoxes, shops, WC toilets and even a small building where teens could go and play table games. There is a big misconception that everyone in Iraq is a practising Muslim. However, Iraq is actually very diverse. Did you know that Iraq has many Christian residents as well as Muslims?

22

In my personal experience, the people of Iraq showed great hospitality and were

the most loving nation I have ever seen. They really don’t have much at all, yet have hearts made of gold. However, my trip opened my eyes to how fortunate I truly am, when I looked at the women who had nothing and had to beg for money. I wished there was more that I could do for them. Though their country is often targetted and is labelled by the media as being one of fear and oppression, I saw hope in their eyes. They had no fear as they knew that the Lord was protecting them. They had more faith than me. This same belief gave me inner peace and strength. Whilst on my trip, I also learned a new language, Arabic. A common misconception is that all Muslims can speak fluent Arabic and that they are all Arabs. Well, it’s not true. Anyway, Arabic is a beautiful language and is very useful, though I still can’t say that I’m anywhere near fluent. At the same time, I learned that you don’t need to use words to communicate with someone and connect as people. All you need is a smile and a loving heart. When I was

sitting in a shrine, I met this beautiful and sweet Iraqi girl who tried to talk to me. Though I couldn’t really talk with her properly, her soft words and her loving personality told me everything I needed to know. Another typical misconception is that all Iraqis promote violence or are terrorists. Actually, Iraqis die every day due to terror attacks. They are the victims too. They are helpless and opressed. Did you know, in a city called Karbala, in Iraq, throughout the year millions of people flock to the shrine in a peaceful gathering to promote love and brotherhood. Iraq will always be my second home, my dream come true. As a British person, their love, strength and courage in the face of adversity really inspired me. I may not have been Iraqi before my trip but now, I am an Iraqi in everything but blood. If you want to know more, I would recommend looking at reliable unbiased sources and asking questions. The moral of the story is to not believe everything you see and hear in the media.

Thousands gathered for peace gathering in Karbala at holy shrine of Hussain.

Moon Facts As you can probably tell, we love the Moon so much that we named our magazine after it, so we thought we’d give you some random but interesting facts about it too. So...

The space suits worn by the astronauts to the moon weighed 180 pounds on earth, but thirty pounds on the moon due to the lower gravity. In China, the dark shadows that are on the moon are called “the toad in the moon”. Only 59% of the moon’s surface is ever visible from earth! The moon rotates at 10 miles per hour compared to the earth’s rotation of 1000 miles per hour! The dark shadows we see on the moon, that create the image of the man in the moon, are craters filled with basalt. About 49 moons would fit inside the Earth! The moon’s surface temperature can range from -233°c up to 123°c! The Moon orbits the Earth every 27.3 days. The first person to set foot on the Moon was Neil Armstrong.

24

The Earth’s tides are largely caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon.

The moon was created when a rock the size of Mars slammed into Earth!

Although research is continuing, most scientists agree that the Moon contains small amounts of water.

Our moon is bigger than Pluto. This leads some scientists to think the moon is more like a planet. They often refer to the Earth-moon system as a “double planet.”

Mons Huygens is the tallest mountain on the Moon, it is 4700 metres tall, just over half the height of Mount Everest!
