Headteacher’s Letter
“Confidence and commitment.” have provided to ensure all students can face the exam season with confidence. Additionally, all of you will know of, and learn a bit more about in this Update, the fantastic opportunities that students have enjoyed both in their lessons, and through trips and extra-curricular events.
Dear Parent/Carer Whilst it is lovely to see our days getting lighter for longer, and enjoy the first sight of spring and milder weather, we do have to ask where the time has gone since Christmas! Those of you who have children in Years 10-13 will be aware of the intense examination preparation that our teachers
As you can see from my photograph, staff joined wholeheartedly into the spirit of World Book Day on Thursday 5 March. Harry Potter was a very prevalent theme! This, and everything you will read about in this Update, underline the enthusiasm, commitment and energy of our staff and students. I am sure you will agree. Some additional points I would like to share with you are: • School finishes as usual at

3.10pm on Thursday 2 April. School opens to all students, as usual, at 8.45am on Monday 20 April. The school gates close every morning at 8.45am. After this time students will have to report to reception where they will be registered as late to school. Our school website (www. caludoncastle.co.uk) and VLE (Firefly) are regularly updated and you will find all recent letters and communication on these. Very helpful for those of you who have forgetful sons or daughters!
Enjoy a restful and safe Easter break.

Dramatic Events
For our Year 13 Drama practical exam we were given the stimulus of Grimm’s Fairy Tales as the basis of our piece. In my group we drew out the themes of war, manipulation and abuse from the original stories and developed living toy characters who represented these issues.
During the performance we explored these characters’ pasts through stylised flashbacks, returning each time to the attic where the toys find themselves. The artistic design of our piece is centred around this attic set, as we thought that this setting would give a decayed, detached feeling to our performance. The performance itself is heavily physical, with great attention paid to using powerful music and choreographing fluid sequences of lifts and movements. Some dramatic influences include the theatre companies Frantic Assembly and DV8.
We performed our piece on Thursday 26th February in the drama studio; which gave us a great space to present the atmosphere and style that we had planned. With the help of Matt, the technician, we were able to create a low-key-lighting set of an attic, which really helped us to manipulate the audience’s attention, through spotlights and colour.
Personally, I feel that all the groups’ performances were successes and I am especially pleased with how the physical theatre aspects of our piece came across. We had also been influenced by a member of my group’s knowledge of classic Indian dance, and by incorporating fragments of this as symbolism in our piece, the physical sequences had meaning and depth - I was happy to hear that the audience had successfully understood this.

Year 8 & 9 Update All the students have been involved in assemblies and activities concerning Safer Internet Day, which was on the 10th of February. Each year at this point they are reminded of the necessity to keep themselves safe online, and are given tips on how to do this. This year focused on not sharing anything ‘you wouldn’t want your nan to see’. Options update Over the last few weeks, both year 8 and year 9 have been choosing their options for next academic year. We were
delighted to see so many parents at each of the options information evenings.

Post-16 News
Work Experience 2015 This year, the second week in January saw a record number of over 130 Year 12 students complete work experience placements. The process begins in October with students researching opportunities and contacting employers to make arrangements. This is followed up by the school to confirm health and safety arrangements. This year we had an amazing variety of placements with areas including accountancy, medicine, engineering, banking and finance, and education. Completing work experience in Year 12 gives the school and students greater opportunities regarding the variety of work
Thanks

For the past few years I have been involved as a volunteer at Central Hall on Christmas Day for lunches for the homeless. This year however was a little more special, because of handmade cards with individual messages to our clients from pupils at your school. I think they were year 7 pupils. Can I say that we volunteers and our clients thought they were very special indeed. Can you please on our behalf thank these pupils and the teacher involved. I myself worked in a school for many years and know what it takes to motivate something like this. Again pass on my thanks.

places, and more flexibility in how students work within these placements. Students are therefore able to target areas which they are specifically interested in. When questioned, over 90% of students said they were allowed to work independently in their workplace and over 60% said that the placement had influenced their decisions on their future career path. Those students who were completing work experience at a different time of the year, or who were undecided in their career path, completed an in-school skills week. The aim of this week was to give students a wide variety of experiences to help
them make decisions on their future pathways. The week included visits to De Montfort University, Heart of England Training for an interview workshop and Henley College for an apprenticeship day. The students also completed activities on financial literacy, CVs and interviews. The feedback from the placement has been excellent, with a number of employers, De Montfort University and Henley College, all contacting the school to state how impressed they have been with the attitude of the students they worked with. Congratulations to all Year 12 students involved in the week.
Conference
On a Friday afternoon in March, ten Year 12 Psychology students took part in a video conference webinar with Bristol University and four other schools from across the UK. It was called ‘Is Your Mind Playing Tricks On You’ and was hosted by a PhD student from Bristol University’s Psychology Department. The students were actively engaged in visual illusions and current research to bring to life their AS studies on human memory and its fallibility. All students reported
having thoroughly enjoyed the interactive session. The nature of this conference was a unique experience for our department and one we will look forward to engaging with again in the future. Added entertainment came from the Red Nose Day costumes which meant our front row sported a hippy, the Phantom of the Opera and a nun! Ms McKenzie, Psychology

Student Clubs Dance Club
Dance club is back and this time it’s too hot! Dance club takes place every Wednesday after school from 3.15pm to 4.15pm in the dance studio. Our first dance is choreographed by Miss Pender to Uptown Funk and is starting to look like a great piece of dance that we are hoping to show off in Arts Week later in the year. There are still spaces though, so if you love to dance, or just simply want to learn a new skill, come along any Wednesday and join in. Bring some comfy dance clothes and be ready to have fun. For more information, see Miss Pender, Performing Arts
Labrats... In September, the Science department started running a year 7 science club – the Labrats! In their first term, the Labrats made marshmallow catapults and pop rockets, designed polar bear blubber and electromagnet cranes and looked at their own cells! If any year 7s would still like to join Labrats, we run on a Tuesday afternoon, from 3.15 to 4pm. Since Christmas, the Labrats have experimented with static electricity (and seen how it links to plasma balls!), attempted to grow yeast and made their own ice cream. “It’s the most fun since the dawn of time”, says Connor. “It’s the most fun since TV”, says Liam. For more information, see Mrs Mach, Science

Student Clubs Drama Club It’s that time of year again when Drama Club starts at Caludon Castle! This year key stage 3 students, along with a few year 11 helpers, will be working with Miss Allcock to create a performance to showcase their drama talent to parents and friends in the summer term. For the first meeting of this year’s Drama Club we were able to experience the wonderful Commedia dell’arte performances from Year 10 students and get inspired! All members of the Drama Club really enjoyed the performances and were very impressed by the standard of performance. The next meeting of Drama Club was a chance to get to know each other a bit better, playing lots of fun drama games. Over the next few weeks we will be starting to explore our options for the final performance and we will be sure to keep you updated with our progress!
This is a great chance for any students who love drama to get involved with the creative process of making a performance from scratch and to experience the magic of theatre.
Students are still welcome to join Drama Club - every Tuesday from 3.15pm to 4.15pm in the Drama Studio. For more information, see Miss Alcock, Performing Arts
And More Labrats! “Since Labrats began in September 2014, this year 7 Science club has been a massive success. We have continued to do lots of fun, handson Science activities. “This term we have made some magnetic goo and dissected dead locusts, which we examined under the microscope. “Labrats is a great opportunity to
do some alternative experiments that we don’t do in class, and we get to use lots of different equipment in the laboratory! “Labrats is held in F22 every Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:00 and is run by Mr and Mrs Mach.”

Science Week Science Week is always a highlight of the year for the Science Faculty, and this year was no different! From the 16th to the 20th March, it was a wild ride of exciting lessons for KS3: ‘beat the flood’, testing reactions and much more; while KS4 and 5 enjoyed thought-provoking ethics-based starters. Mrs Banwait and Miss Kew ran ‘whizz-bang’ assemblies – with actual whizzes and bangs! Mr Mach ran the popular balloon car race for year 7. We entered the National Science Poster competition again this year, with entries competing for a cash prize per year group. There was an in-school ‘parody and poem’ competition, using the YouTube
favourite ‘All About the Base (No Acid)’ to kick start the campaign. Friday was certainly the high point of the week, with both the solar cclipse to see (yes – we did well to book it to take place during Science week!) and Engineering students from Warwick University coming in to show us their mind controlled cars and virtual physio-
therapists. All in all, fun was had by both staff and students. We hope that even more students can see how much fun Science can be, and how much potential there is in the world around them. Thank you to all who helped to support Science Week 2015! Mrs Mach, Science Faculty

Ski Trip 2015 swimming, shopping visits, snowball fights and some very dodgy singing from staff at the Karaoke bar.
Caludon Castle School’s first ski trip for a number of years took place in February half term. The group of students and staff departed for the sunny Austrian Mountains and the resort of Alpendorf on Saturday the 14th February for a fun but tiring time over the half term holiday. They had 5 full-on days of skiing, apres-ski activities and a whole load of memories that will last a lifetime. The team of staff, which included Mr Frankish, Mr Mckee, Mrs Anderson-Shore, Mrs Bourne and Mr Williams, had been busy preparing the students over the previous month with fitness sessions, parents’ evenings and ski lessons at the Snowdome.
members of staff travelling by coach to the little town of Puch which is a stone’s throw from the city of Salzburg. Having endured the mammoth 22-hour journey, it was time to get kitted out with ski boots and poles for the week’s skiing.
The week was topped off with awards and certificates before we had to set off on our return journey back to school. Thankfully it was a little quieter on the return journey and most students slept the entire way!! If you are interested in Austria 2016, please grab a letter from Mr Williams or see Mrs Anderson-Shore or Mr Mckee as soon as possible. Numbers for 2016 are limited to 40.
Progress through the week with ALL students was outstanding. Considering that the majority of the students who travelled were complete beginners just weeks beforehand, and had never skied on real snow, by the end of the week they were flying down the mountain.
A big ‘thank you’ from me to all of the students who were absolutely amazing during the week, and especially to the staff who gave up their time to come and make the week so memorable. Thank you to all of the parents for their support over the past few months of organising. 7

Most students attending had never skied before, however they managed to reach an intermediate level of skiing before they even hit the slopes. The tour began with the 39 students and 5 very excited

Student Leaders
Students in a range of years across Caludon have been taking part in student leadership activities, whether this be for a specific faculty, or generally across the school. Work has been going on throughout the school to introduce new and interesting aspects for students.
spelling bee will be started after half-term, offering a more interactive and interesting opportunity. Feedback from the students and staff who helped to trial this has proved invaluable in helping to improve the initiative. Thank you to those who have taken part so far, and “watch this space”!
The Student Interview Panel members have been involved in interviewing a number of candidates for an English post. The team of Jonathan Letts (Head of panel), James Cousins, Hannah Curtlin, Holly Kingswell and Autumn Stevens-Minns had an enjoyable few hours, interrogating prospective teachers!
The Reading Squad’s Twitter page (@crazyaboutbooks) has been going well, however a new Twitter Manager is needed to take over the page. We really need someone who can work with the English Ambassadors to take the Twitter page to that next level. Any interested parties can apply to either: p11lettsj@caludoncastle.co.uk or stpricem@ caludoncastle.co.uk.
Student leaders have also been leading tours of the school for visitors. The students have enjoyed showing off Caludon’s amazing facilities, and the visitors have been very complimentary about Caludon and its students and staff. The English Student Ambassadors have been doing some great work with KS3, with a spelling bee initiative. A new and improved version of the

The Maths Ambassadors have also been working hard, with lots of new ideas to contribute to learning in the Maths Faculty. New coloured whiteboard pens have been purchased, and a strategy based around the famous wooden blocks of ‘Jenga’ is planned. Also, 5 Maths student leaders have met recently with an adviser from Coventry Education Authority, to talk about the plans for the
Maths Faculty. Mr Barber was very pleased with the work of Caludon students, stating that we had a very original and interesting approach to our work. One other idea mentioned was that a home learning help club could be set up for all year groups, to assist students if they have difficulties with their Maths. This would be led by Maths teachers, so watch this space for more information. A further idea that is being trialled is improving the word walls in each of the Maths classrooms. New laminated cards with definitions and examples on the reverse are being tested in S28 to see if they can make a difference to students’ learning. So, if you have a lesson in S28, make sure you ask about the new word walls! These are just a few examples of the work of student leadership within Caludon. New developments will be published in the next Update. Jonathan Letts, 10.6 Student Leader and Head of Student Interview Panel
Home Learning We have appreciated the feedback given in parent surveys at various evenings in recent months and we are making every effort to improve the communication of Home Learning via Firefly. The intention is that students are able to access their Home Learning via the internet, as recorded by the teacher, so that there is no misunderstanding of what is expected. Students who have problems accessing the Internet can make use of school computers in the library before or after school. If problems persist then students can see Mr Fitzjohn who is Leader of IT. He will be more than happy to help.
In the months ahead we are looking to include more and more resources on Firefly – past papers, YouTube clips, hyperlinks to helpful articles etc. If you have further suggestions then do let us know. Not sure how to get on Firefly? You can access Firefly from the school website - use the ‘VLE’ link at the top of the home page and then click on the word ‘here’ in the main text.
Or you can go straight to Firefly at caludoncastle.fireflycloud. net All parents have been sent an individual user name and password to allow them to access their child’s (or children’s) information. If you need these details to be sent to you again, please contact the school.

Trips and
Symphony Hall, year 7 The Symphony Hall was phenomenal! “Last week, on Tuesday, most of year 7 went on a trip to Symphony Hall in Birmingham. The venue was amazing, one of the best I have seen. The orchestra played all sorts of things like Happy, Angry Birds, Beethoven and much more. My favourite was Angry Birds because straight away I recognised it. However my least favourite was Happy because near the end you couldn’t really tell that it was Happy because it didn’t sound
like it. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. I really enjoyed
going and I would without a doubt go again!” Zoe Brock-Turner 7.2
Media Student Conference Taking Media Further Almost at the end of last term, a small but enthusiastic group of Media Studies students travelled to London with their teachers, to attend the MediaMagazine Student Conference at the Institute of Education. Unfortunately traffic jams meant that they missed the first speaker of the day, Jon Snow, who had had to bring forward his timeslot so that he could get back in time for the morning briefing for Channel 4 News. However, the students did see great presentations by: Destiny Ekaragha (pictured left), independent film director, exploring ways into the film industry; Pete Fraser, senior A
12
Level examiner, talking about great student production work; Jake Wynne, director of countless music videos including some by Geri Halliwell and Robbie Williams; and Owen Jones, columnist for the Guardian newspaper. The conference was aimed at A Level students, but some of our group were GCSE students who were ‘taking it further’ by getting key information from such great speakers. “It’s a shame we missed Jon Snow, but we heard professional film-makers talk about their experience in the film industry. We learnt that connections are the most important factor in success.” (Holly Wagstaff, year 13)
Visits
Warwick Arts Centre Theatre ‘JOHN’ by DV8 Theatre Company Year 12 and 13 A Level Theatre Studies students had the opportunity to visit the theatre on Thursday 5th February 2015 and see DV8 live, which was truly exciting. DV8 Physical Theatre was formed in 1986 and has been led since its inception by Lloyd Newson. The company has produced 19 highly acclaimed dance pieces, which have toured internationally, and four award-winning films for television.
The production JOHN is a new verbatim dance-theatre work by Lloyd Newson, Artistic Director of DV8 Physical Theatre. John’s story is both extraordinary and touching. Years of crime, drug use and struggling to survive, lead John on a search where his life converges with others in an unexpected place, unknown by most. JOHN authentically depicts real-life stories, where movement and spoken word combine to create an intense, moving and poignant theatrical experience. “The performance communicated the emotional journey, through all his highs and lows. All elements of
the performance were incredibly interesting, from the revolving set, to the intricate and expressive movements. DV8 are an outstanding ensemble and we thoroughly enjoyed the performance” (Bethany Whale and Joanna Gay, year 12 Theatre Studies Students)
The Globe and Barbican Theatres Othello and Anitigone The Drama department made our, now annual, pilgrimage to London on the 18th March to visit Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. We used the permanent exhibition and displays to discover and research about how theatre was presented in Shakespeare’s era, as part of the preparation for the written examination. Mr De Groot was very keen to bring a replica of an Elizabethan wind-sound-effects-maker back to Caludon for the Christmas production - unfortunately the mini bus was not large enough! We were able to watch an
interesting production of ‘Othello’ (luckily the play we are studying), in the context of an Elizabethan production, although updated. The play was very cleverly re-set in World War 1. A highlight of the trip was the evening’s visit to the prestigious Barbican Theatre where we saw a new version of the play ‘Antigone’, directed by Ivo Van Hove, and starring the Oscar and BAFTA winning French film star, Juliette Binoche. It was a visually stunning production with exceptionally powerful imagery created with a simple set and projection. Although tired by the end of the visit we were all inspired and stimulated by the range of research and creative ideas we found.

Sports News A number of Coventry Schools Cup football games have been played since the weather has improved, with three year groups progressing through to the next stages of their competition. The Year 7 team progressed to the semi-final with a 7-2 victory at Bishop Ullathorne. Patrick Marshall scored a brace of goals from the centre back position! They will now face Grace Academy in the last four. The Year 8 team dispatched Finham Park 5-2 with Modou Barry bagging a hat-trick. They have been drawn against Blue Coat in the semi-final. The Year 9s faced a physical Cardinal Wiseman side in the quarter finals, but despite coming back from conceding two early goals to lead 3-2, they eventually lost 4-3 in a spirited performance. The Year 10 team faced holders Finham Park in the first round, and a very entertaining tie saw Caludon Castle progress on penalties. After being 3-0 up after 10 minutes, Finham pegged Caludon back to 3-3 at half time. Caludon went 4-3 up but were again pegged back with the game finishing at 4-4. Caludon again took the lead in the first period of extra time but conceded in the second, the game ending 5-5 and going to penalties. There were notable performances from Tom Seedhouse and John Bucham who led a great team performance but the stand out
player was Daniel Cooper who led the back line brilliantly under severe pressure from Finham. The team will face Stoke Park in the quarter final. A couple more fixtures have been played since the matches above, which unfortunately saw two teams exit different competitions. The Year 10s put up a brave fight against Stoke Park in the Quarter Final of the Coventry Schools Cup going down 4-3. They found themselves 4-0 down with only 8 minutes to go, but nearly mounted an amazing comeback led by captain, Tom Seedhouse, putting Stoke under severe pressure but just falling short of getting what would probably have been an undeserved equaliser. The U16 team, made up of a number of Year 11s, a couple of Year 10s and even a Year 9,
bowed out of the Telegraph Cup at the quarter final stage losing out to Cardinal Newman in a very tight game of few chances. The final score was 1-0 but the boys can be very proud of their performance. Notable performances in this game came from James Cooper at fullback, Year 9 Bradley West out wide and Reagan Gavin in goal, who kept his side in the match with some outstanding saves in the second half. The remaining two teams left in the Coventry Schools Cup play their semi final ties this week with the Year 7s facing Grace Academy and the Year 8s visiting Blue Coat. We wish them the best of luck and hope to have some Caludon Castle representation in the finals after Easter. For more Sports News check the webiste: caludonsports. wordpress.com
