Headteacher’s Letter

“Confidence in new experiences...” The annual Year 9 graduation events were enjoyed by all successful graduates, and parents/ carers enthusiastically applauded and shed a few tears of pride as their children were awarded their new ties as a mark of their journey into KS4.

Dear Parents and Carers, What an outstanding term! We have been overwhelmed by the talent shown by your children, as exemplified by the many trophies and awards we have received for successful football tournaments, STEM competitions, music and university scholarships, to name a few! Over 100 trips and learning beyond the classroom activities have taken place during this term, with students demonstrating stunning behaviour and confidence to

participate in new experiences. I have been so impressed with our younger students, in particular, who have shown great leadership and independent skills for raising money for charity. The annual Elite Awards Evening for Year 7, 8 and 10 students, who have demonstrated commitment, enthusiasm and determination to be superb ambassadors for Caludon Castle, was simply delightful.

Finally, the Year 11 and Year 13 proms were, as ever, celebrated in true style with the students exemplifying all that is valued at Caludon – confidence, respect and engagement in joining with staff to eat, dance and remember the good times over their time here. We wish them success in their GCSE and A level exams. All that remains is to thank you for your support and to wish you a very happy summer holiday.

Best wishes,

Mrs M Marr Ms A Dudgeon Headteacher Associate Headteacher

Visitors and Jaguar Land Rover Art workshop Y10 students had the privilege of hosting a team of design professionals from JLR to talk about the process that goes into designing, making and creating the latest models of Jaguar Land-Rover cars. Students got to work with the materials that professionals would use in the workshops at JLR. Along with this, students were also able to experience the interior of a digital car design by using digital visualisation equipment. It was an absolute pleasure to see students maximise their experiences within the day’s workshop. Thank you to all involved. Mr Owen, Subject Leader for Art

Events in brief Just under 40 Y9 and Y10 students visited Barcelona in late June with teachers from the Food Technology and Modern Foreign Languages teams. Y8 students were taken to the Black Country Museum by the History team in June. Y7 students took part in visits to Kenilworth and Warwick Castles in early July, with teachers from History. Two groups of Y10 Health and Social Care students visited Eden House care home as part of their course, with their teacher Mr Brown.

Y8 students went to the Natural History Museum in June with Dr Millett and other Science teachers. Our thanks to all the staff who make these events possible. There is a large team involved in even the smallest visit, to ensure students’ safety and wellbeing, as well as keeping everything to as low a cost as possible. We believe that the benefits to the students are more than worth the time and effort this takes.

Events Plas Dol-y-Moch Media Studies students travelled to Plas Dol-y-Moch in Snowdonia in July, to film the footage for their A level coursework. The majority of students had chosen to respond to a brief calling for a 90-second trailer for a new TV crime drama series.

equipment was used to improve their shots - such as the sawn off skip trolley used to create tracking shots on the front path of the house. The shots taken were reviewed at each evening’s meeting just as professional teams review their ‘dailies’ - to Having planned their decide what needed to individual productions in be re-filmed the following school, at Dol-y-Moch they day. Events Holocaust Survivor Martin Stern, who survivied the German concentration camps during the second world war, came into school in June to share his experiences with Y9 History students - all 200-plus of them. After he had spoken to this large group, he worked with 30 Y9 students for the rest of the day. These students had had to apply for a place in the workshop by explaining why they wanted to be there. The History department were very proud of the Y9 students. They listened respectfully and asked some excellent questions. One student commented: “I was so glad when I was told I was chosen, I really feel like I have taken so much away from it. It was definitely eye opening and Martin’s story was incredibly interesting and emotional. I would be really grateful if you could pass on to him how grateful I was for him sharing his story. I wanted to say a thank you to the History department for organising a once in a lifetime opportunity for everyone. Ms Graham, Assistant Headteacher

Oxford University HE+ conferences On the 18 June, Caludon Castle School hosted a conference for Y9 students from a variety of schools in the local area, giving them the opportunity to hear about life at the prestigious Oxford Universtiy. Seventeen of our own students attended the event, which lasted from 2pm to 5pm, and involved a series of lectures and workshops. The students were enthusiastic about the event, and said it had opened their eyes to what life was like at a top university, and what they needed to do to get there. Earlier in the term, post-16 students had had a similar experience, with a competitive edge. Britney commented that the other groups had put a lot more effort in, which had given the Caludon group something to think about when preparing for their interviews. It was a good afternoon with clear learning for all. The students had been nervous but had dug deep. Mrs Slack, MFL

Peace Conference Y6 students from four of our local primary schools came to Caludon Castle school for the day in early July, to attend our annual Peace Conference. The students had a range of activities around the theme of peace and reconciliation, from which they created potential content for a similarly themed assembly in their own school. Letter from a bully I am writing to say I am sorry for being so horrible to you and making you cry. I am sorry for calling you names, I am sorry for saying stuff about the way you look and your family, I am sorry I always pushed in front of you or shoved you when no one was looking, I am sorry about the lies I told people about you because you lost your friends and had to stand alone at play time. I am sorry I made my friends ignore you, I am sorry that I posted those things online, I am sorry that you were so sad you stopped coming to school. When people found out what I had been doing to you, my Mum cried and my grandad shouted at me for the first time ever. I cried but everyone was so ashamed of me there were no hugs to make me feel better, And now I have said sorry I would like to say thank you. Thank you for being so brave to tell your sister about me, Thank you to your sister for coming to the school, Thank you for making me face up to the bully I had become, And I promise you I will change my ways. I want to be brave and good like you. Maybe one day I, I hope so. Yours Your Bully

Events and Art visits Y10 Tate Modern visit Y10 students ventured down to London to develop their perception of what art can look like and how it can be presented within a gallery. Students were able to see prestigious works by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Monet, Yves Klein, Josef Albers and Henri Matisse. The sun was shining and the inspiration was following, it was amazing to see so many students explore the gallery with such excitement. Students returned with inspiration and ideas which will support them in their development as artists. One

student commented on the trip, “Not only is this my first art trip it is my first trip I have done at Caludon, it was great to see so much famous art work.” As usual it was a pleasure to accompany students down for the day. Thank you to all involved. Mr Owen, Subject Leader for Art

Y12 residential visit to Falmouth University Students travelled down to Falmouth in Cornwall to explore the opportunities the University of Falmouth has to offer. On the way we stopped off at Roche Court sculpture park where we explored the works of prestigious artists such as Peter Randall Page, Barry Flanagan and David Nash. Students discussed and formed opinions on the work, its purpose and how it could link to their new A level investigations. Students even got to touch a sculpture worth £1.8million. From there students travelled down to Falmouth University where they carried out sgraffito, screen printing, game design and dry point etching workshops. Lecturers and staff at the University of Falmouth were very impressed with the students’

12

application and commitment. As well as this, students stayed at Falmouth backpackers’ lodge, which had the luxury of having the beach down the road. The trip allowed students to develop their thinking in art as well as experiencing life as a student at university. Art, fish ‘n’ chips and the seaside…. What more could you ask for? It was an absolute pleasure to accompany such passionate artists, thank you to all involved. Mr Owen, Subject Leader for Art

Performances 3 Cs Week Creativity, Culture and Charity Week The final week of the summer term is Creativity, Culture and Charity Week. At the start of the week, our peripatetic teachers kindly donated two hours of their own time to offer ‘taster’ lessons on the following instruments: Flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, piano, keyboard, guitar, bass and drums. These taster sessions were taken up by a large number of KS3 students. At the same time, we received a new order of orchestral instruments in school, with KS3 Music classes having the chance to try these in workshops during the week alongside some of our more experienced older musicians. The first evening of the week saw our Creativity Showcase event for parents and friends. Over 50 students performed, with dances choreographed to go with the live music performances. Clay modellers from JLR led a workshop for art students, and Highly Sprung theatre company ran a workshop for Drama students. The Verse entertained students from each year group, as did Chanon Callender. The week ended with live performances from the staff band and from KS3 students in a charity talent show for each year.

All graduates received a certificate and a KS4 tie, which they were then able to proudly wear to school the next day.

Well done to all 221 graduates! Ms Hutchinson, Assistant Headteacher

Year 10 Y10 graduates were able to choose between paint-balling and a day out at Drayton Manor. Either way, it was an exciting end to a year’s hard work.

Events Year 11 Prom The Y11 Prom is the traditional end to the GCSE year. Students this year spent their big evening at Nailcote Hall, just outside Coventry. They enjoyed a chicken meal, a disco and some luxurious surroundings.

Year 12 Graduation Event The end of the first year of sixth form was marked for the graduates with a formal event in the school hall. Y12 students dressed up to the nines to enjoy their celebration, before we waved them off for their summer holidays.

Trips and Visits Paris Y12 and Y13 Media Studies and Photography students travelled to Paris at the start of April to visit the ECU European Independent Film Festival. With adults and students combined, the group was 26-strong, the largest we have taken to the festival. Travelling out on Friday 5th April, and back on Monday 8th, the party had time for sightseeing on these days, taking in Sacre-Coeur and Montmartre, the Tuilieries and the Louvre on the Friday, and the Pompidou Centre and a shopping trip on the Monday. There were further excursions on Saturday and Sunday evenings, to the top of the Tour Montparnasse, and to Notre Dame cathedral (one week before the devastating fire). Students certainly got to move around Paris! Saturday and Sunday daytime saw us at the film festival, watching 21 films, from music videos and short films to full-length feature films, from around the world. Countries of origin included Lebanon, Italy, Mexico, Australia, Chile, Hungary, Greece, Germany, South Africa, USA, France, Romania and the UK. Dipping into these cultures was a privilege and an eyeopenng experience. On the first day, the short film ‘The Scorpion’s Tale’ stood out as the group’s favourite, but this was completely over-shadowed on the second day by the world premiere of the excellent Italian film ‘Rwanda’. With the Rwandan massacres having taken place 25 years ago, some students were unaware of

20

these events. The film was chiilling, gripping, and ultimately inspiring in equal measure. Even better, the event was attended by the film’s director, costume designer, and the two lead actors. They explained how the film had come about, how an Italian village had been transformed into a corner of Rwanda, and how the Red Cross had helped to supply 450 Rwandan extras for some of the scenes. This trip was a truly memorable experience, and many students have vowed to return to Paris in the future. Ms Hutchinson, Assistant Headteacher

Photography: Stratford-on-Avon Y12 Photography students visited Stratford-on-Avon in June for their Near and Far project. They took photographs from the top of the RSC Tower and in the Butterfly Farm. Students will now use the footage and images taken to create a final piece for their project over the summer holidays. Ms Hutchinson, Assistant Headteacher

Y7 and Y8 Olympics On Wednesday 10 July, students in Years 7 and 8 participated in the Caludon Olympics. Students were able to choose two sports, one from our winter sports timetable and one from our summer sports timetable. In each of the sports, they competed in tournaments against students in their year group. 24 Year 9 and 10 students supported the event to help officiate and lead the sports. All of the students were fully engaged and enjoyed competing against students who they would not usually be able to work with. The students were very supportive towards each other, demonstrating great sportsmanship. It was a lovely occasion which brought together over 500 students and 30 staff to promote sport, participation and competition. Well done to all involved. Mrs Oldham, Sports and Leisure

Trips and Events 7.6 Forensics project The scene of the crime….. 7.6 are busy solving a mock crime that has taken place in the Science department. The suspect has broken into Miss Miller’s office to steal her stash of sweets. The suspects are Mr Holland, Mr Frankish and Miss Elson. The class are working hard to gather and analyse the evidence they have found at the crime scene. Looking at fingerprints, fibres, footprints and DNA. The suspects have been questioned and the case is open. Will they find out ‘who done it’? Mrs Roberts, Science faculty

Richard Lee Y6 Science Visit On Tuesday 18th of June, 64 Richard Lee students visited Caludon for our annual Science transition day. Students took part in 3 practical sessions to help them understand how the heart works. They investigated how exercise affects their pulse rate, made models of the blood and blood vessels and even saw a real pig’s heart dissected! The students and staff had an amazing afternoon and we look forward to welcoming some of the students when they join us in September. Mrs Roberts, Science faculty

Barcelona Students in Y9 and Y10 had amazing food experiences in Barcelona this term. The trip started with a walking tapas tour of Barcelona where students had the opportunity to try typical cuisine from the Catalan region. The next day was spent learning about healthy Mediterranean diets and having a go at making Spanish dishes. The best experience of all was saved until the final day when students went shopping at Boqueria market for fresh fish and then made paella from scratch with a Spanish chef. The students were very adventurous and tried all types of fish and some even had a go at preparing squid! All in all a great trip! Mrs Ruddy and Mrs Coe, Food Technology

Visits West Midlands’ Safari Park On 21 May, Y9 students visited the West Midlands’ Safari Park with the Geography department. They handled live creatures and asked a lot of questions, in a session on animal adaptation. Some of the students faced their fears by handling or at least touching animals they had been scared of. Caden Hadley said this: The West Midlands Safari Park trip was really enjoyable for everyone. I loved seeing all of the different animals within their sectioned areas and learning about the plant and animal adaptions in different habitats. By going on the trip, and seeing the animals first hand, I have a much better understaning of how and why they adapt to the conditions. I feel like students in the future would definitely benefit from this trip, because as well as learning a lot, they will also enjoy the experience. Thomas Male: The trip was a great experience to see the animals up close and really see how they are adapted first hand. Abbey Widdowson: I loved seeing all the different animals that you normally wouldn’t be able to see! Mrs Mallett, Geography

SENSED Visual Arts & Technology Showcase This year’s SENSED exhibition was a wonder to behold. Work was on display throughout the ground floor from students across the Visual Arts and subjects. G3 was the venue for a jungle

scene created by 7.6, complete with gorilla and giant bugs. Art and Photography works were displayed in several classrooms, as well as the concourse, the hall and the corridors. This year, there was

a preponderance of mixed media work - such as photographs that had been painted on or sewn into - and installation work, which is a growing trend amongst GCSE and A level students, as it is in the professional art world. Technology work was on display in the entrance foyer, along with live demonstrations of catering skills. Parents and friends were invited to the private view evening on Monday 8 July. To set a relaxed atmosphere, Fjori Dautaj delighted the exhibition viewers with her violin playing as they strolled amongst the exhibits. The exhibition then remained on display in the school for the following week, so that students could see the range and quality of work their peers had produced. We are very proud of all those whose work was shown. Ms McDougall, leader of Visual Arts

Sports News Boys’ Football Finals galore! The Y11s made Coventry history by completing the treble, winning the West Midlands Cup, The Telegraph Cup and the Coventry Cup. This meant they ended the year undefeated, finishing their Caludon Castle football career in style. They only lost 3 games out of roughly 70 in 5 years, an incredible achievement! The Sixth Form also won the Coventry Cup, beating Finham 2-0 in the final. This meant the school won 4 trophies this year. Unfortunately, the Y8s lost their final in a cracking 6-5 thriller but did really well to reach the final and did the school proud. Mr Frankish, Sport & Leisure
