FROM THE EDITOR
Having celebrated its centenary in 2014, it is somewhat of an adolescent, but has a century rich in history and style, shining just as bright as the stars who call it home. Sitting comfortably in greater Los Angeles, Beverly Hills is a playground for the rich and famous and a bucket-list city that all men must taste. Forget the Pretty Woman preconceptions, there is a world on offer for boys looking for a thrill.
The QH team packed their bags and took the first flight to LAX, and prepared to enjoy Beverly Hills like all men should. In complete indulgence. Before the trip we took some advice from our resident fitness expert, Ray Buckton, on getting a California body. Then on our journey State-side we sampled world renowned hotels, savoured top class cuisine, relaxed surrounded by the views from three roof top pools and shopped - and we mean shopped! Oh and did we mention the drive of our lives? Sit back and relax as we guide you through this city of wonders…

EXERCISE
A compound exercise utilises more than one muscle group, meaning you will trigger more muscle fibres to contract. When more muscle fibre is broken down, the body will secrete more muscle building testosterone. In addition, when more muscle fibres are being recruited to complete an exercise, your body will be exerting itself at a higher capacity, burning more calories and heightening your training intensity. This in turn is the perfect stimulus for your body to burn into your fat stores, getting you shredded for your swim shorts. These four exercises alone will recruit almost every muscle in your body, so here is how to make yourself proficient at them.
10 / QUEL HOMME / ISSUE 1 / BEVERLY HILLS
PHOTO: MONTAGE BEVERLY HILLS
There are four exercises that, if mastered, are key to a complete physique. Squats, Dips, Pull-Ups and Deadlifts are four compound exercises which will not only build muscle, but will also stimulate your metabolism to have you burning body fat at the same time.
SQUATS
Bodyweight squats are perfect for beginners or those who have no equipment. Start with your chest up, butt sticking back and feet in a position whereby you can drop deep. A crude analogy you can use to ensure your feet are in the optimal position is to imagine going to the toilet on the floor, whatever position your feet naturally go into, stick with that. That will enable you to get as low as possible. The deeper you squat, the more muscle fibre you will break down. Once in position, point your hands up to encourage your chest to stay high, bend your knees and push your bum back at the same time, distributing your weight onto your heels. Lower yourself as far as possible, and once at the bottom drive yourself back up through your feet and thrust your hips forward.
Back-Squats are a little more advanced and will require you to use a Barbell for extra resistance. Address the bar firstly with your hands evenly on the bar. Once you have your hands in position, put your head under the bar between them and take the bar across your trapezius muscles on your shoulders. Using the same cues as the bodyweight squat; chest up, butt back and feet in your optimal position, lower yourself as per before. As you will have weight on your back this time, it is imperative that you maintain a strong, straight back to prevent any injuries. If you feel like the weight is preventing you from keeping your chest up, then lower it. Again squat as deep as possible to get all those muscle fibres burning up, and drive through your feet back to the start position and thrust your hips to complete the rep.
DIPS Big round shoulders, popping triceps and a balanced chest are all achieved by doing Dips. Doing these will make you the envy of every man on the poolside. Find yourself some parallel bars and grip a hand on each side bringing your body between the two. Take the tension into your arms and begin to lower yourself with your chest moving forward. Lower yourself to ninety degrees at the elbow, and drive through your arms, shoulders and chest to return to the initial position whilst locking your arms out and squeezing your triceps at the top. Leaning forward on the exercise will ensure you stimulate the pectorals, and it is important not to drop too deep into your shoulder girdle, especially if you are a beginner, to prevent any shoulder injuries. Beginners can use an Assisted Dip machine, or if you have limited equipment at your disposal, do these dips between two chairs at home with your feet out in front of you.
PHOTO TAKEN AT GYM BOX BY CALUM DONOGHUE
The king of exercises, Squats will have your quads looking incredible in your short-shorts this summer; there is nothing impressive about a buff upper body with chicken legs. There are variations of the squat that you can do depending on your training ability and what equipment you have access to.
FITNESS DEADLIFTS These are possibly the most difficult of the four exercises that I advise you to master. The Deadlift is the most effective exercise you can do for building overall body strength and power. There is nothing more functional than picking heavy stuff up from the floor. Using nearly every muscle in your body, the deadlift will have your physique looking more athletic, trimmer and stronger whilst sipping your sangria. Address a barbell firstly by putting your shins on it with your feet shoulder width apart. Grip the outside of your knees and sit down, with your bum low and your chest high keeping your back braised and straight. Push your bum backwards distributing your weight onto your heels. Drive through your legs, whilst trying to keep your chest up, back straight and bar close to your body. Once the bar is above your knee, drive your hips forward whilst squeezing your glutes. To lower the weight, push your bum backwards and slide the weight back down your body toward the floor whilst keeping your chest high and back straight. This is not a beginner exercise, I suggest mastering your squat first before attempting this to improve your posterior chain strength.
PULLUPS The mirror muscles are all well and good, but everyone is seeing what is going on behind you whether you realise it or not. Your back makes up the other 50% of muscles you can’t see, so if a complete, balanced physique is what you’re looking for these cannot be neglected. Pull-ups will help to create that ohso desired V-shape, as well as having your arms looking toned and strong. Doing these will create a silhouette of admiration to onlookers as you take a stroll along the shore.
shoulders blades together. Lower yourself slowly whilst trying to maintain tension through your arms until they are straight and you return to the bottom position. If you are a beginner, you can use an Assisted Pull-Up machine, and if you are a beginner with limited equipment, go to a park and do negative Pull-ups. These are completed by jumping to the top position with your chin over the bar, and working on the eccentric (lowering portion) of the exercise.
Grip your hands over the bar outside of your shoulder width and hang from the bar with your weight below you. Whilst trying to arch your back and keeping your chest up, pull through your arms to raise your chest toward the bar at the top. Pull your elbows toward your side and rise until your chin is over the bar, squeezing your biceps and pulling your
Complete these exercises with intensity. This means opt for high reps, low rest and moderate weight (4 sets of 12 reps with 60 seconds rest would be a good place to start) where necessary. This will ensure your heart rate remains elevated and that a lot of muscle fibre is utilised and broken down for an optimal fat burning and muscle building effect.
12 / QUEL HOMME / ISSUE 1 / BEVERLY HILLS
It would be na誰ve to think that, just by completing these exercises, you are going to look like an Adonis on your holidays. Training is merely the stimulus for your body to change; it is what you put inside your body that will make the biggest difference to how you look on the outside. To drop your body fat and get that rippling six-pack, you need to control your carbohydrate intake. Abolish all sugary and starchy carbohydrate foods and drinks from your diet, except from immediately before and after your workouts. Drink A LOT of water, eat tonnes of vegetables, take in plenty of good fats and eat protein at every meal, especially in the morning for breakfast. This will heighten your metabolism and initiate your body to start desiccating stored fats. By bookending your workouts with more simple carbohydrates, you will ensure that any excess glucose (sugar) in your system is transported to your muscles cells as oppose to fat cells, ensuring you have good energy to train as well as aiding recovery and preventing more fat from being harvested. So there you have it. Be consistent, be patient and your holiday photos will be looking better than ever. All you will need is a good tan to top it all off! @RAY_BUCKTON www.raybuckton.com Thanks to www.GymBox.com

QH QUESTIONABLES
PHOTO: Houston Edwards by Scott Hoover
LA based photographer Scott Hoover, shoots some of the world’s most desirable men and uses California as a backdrop. Interview by Calum Donoghue.
QH QUESTIONABLES Where have been some of your favourite places to visit for work? I shoot primarily here in Los Angeles. There are so many different options here with the beach, the mountains, the desert, you name it and it’s within an hour drive. I went to Aruba for a shoot that was really fun, though I worked the entire time and the only time my feet touched the sand on the beach was when we were shooting there. We shot on location at some ruins of an old mill and out on the ocean on a catamaran. Five days of shooting in all - I would love to go there again. I vacationed in Costa Rica several years ago and would love to go back and shoot there. How do you make your subjects feel comfortable in front of the lens? I think my personality and being real with the models helps a lot. I can talk to anyone and it’s easy to find their comfort zone and talk to them about what they want to do and what their goals are. Anyone who knows me, knows that I call people names and that usually makes them laugh and keeps it light and fun. I do not like shoots to feel like ‘work,’ I shoot fast and like to keep moving, and make it up as I go along, unless there is a specific concept in mind or it is something needed for a job. Giving the model respect and asking their opinion I think goes a long way in making them feel comfortable and, when they do, it shows. What makes a good model? A good model arrives on time, not too early and never late. They are groomed but not to excess (I hate, hate, hate, shaved arm pits and stubble on the body). Here is a tip for new models: check out your nose hair and ears and neckline before going to shoot. I like a model who listens to direction yet has a sense of who they are and how they look good and will give me something back to work with. I have shot many brand new models and seasoned pros, and in all honesty you either have it or you don’t. Personality goes a long way when you are shooting someone. Just having great abs is not enough. I would rather shoot a great expressive face on a normal body, than a perfect body that doesn’t know how to do anything but flex their abs and stare straight ahead. Move, hold a pose or work off a pose when you can tell the photographer is loving what you are doing. A good model doesn’t think about what to do, they just do it. If it doesn’t work you just delete the bad ones. But when it does all come together, it’s awesome.
22 / QUEL HOMME / ISSUE 1 / BEVERLY HILLS
What projects do you have coming up? Well I am always working on something, usually a few things at once. I have been working on a project with Josh Kloss over the past several years that I am about to wrap up hopefully this spring. I have my own Hommeage Magazine that I put out every few months, though I am terribly behind on the next instalment and I definitely need to mark out some time to work on that. I usually make a lot of my own work, either with editorials or pictorials and I really love video. I even went and bought a really cool camera to use for video, but I keep forgetting to bring it with me when I am shooting. I do everything myself so it is easy for me to forget to grab it and use it. So video is going to be a big part of this year. I am constantly trying new things and pushing myself. If I am not learning something new all of the time I tend to get bored and lose interest. With photography, I am always learning something new about myself.
What are your favourite bars and restaurants in LA/ Beverly Hills? I love to cook and make full dinners almost every single night at home. A lot of time I have a model in town visiting or someone drops by so I get out the food and make sure everyone is happy. I learnt that from my Grandma from an early age. Food equals love. When I do go out, sushi is always one of my favourites and there are quite a few great places here. Of course Nobu in Malibu in the best and the atmosphere makes for a great night. Mastro’s on N Canon Drive is my favourite steak place in Beverly Hills and anywhere actually. Just amazing what they can do with meat and to me there is no place better. As far as a bar, I prefer a dive bar with crazy people drinking and telling off the wall stories about themselves, than somewhere you can’t relax and loosen up. The bar at La Boheme in West Hollywood has been a fun spot to meet friends before dinner. Chateau Marmont is always a great place for dinner and drinks and it’s very ‘Hollywood’ which I love.
PHOTO: Chase Mattson by Scott Hoover
Any tips on taking a good photograph? Shoot what looks good to you. That is what I do. I know about composition and the rule of thirds, but honestly just photograph what looks good to you regardless if it breaks rules or makes someone else uncomfortable. However, you want to express yourself and do not hold back. It will save you a lot of time. That was a big thing for me to get over, “what will people think?” or not taking risks because of what I thought people would think. To me a good photograph is one you stop and look at for more than a couple seconds and you want to look at it again.
QH QUESTIONABLES You have said you like shooting outside in the sun, LA is great for that, where in the county do you like to shoot? I shoot downtown almost all the time because I live there and I can always find some cool spot or back street with interesting light. For me that is the key no matter what, the light. I can shoot in a cardboard box if the light is interesting. When I lived out in the valley several years ago, I used to roam all over the hill I lived on finding places to shoot. I am very adaptable to my environment so I can always find something wherever I am. The beach in Malibu is always a go to when I want to do that type of shoot. I love water shoots so I use a lot of swimming pools or water in my photographs. I have no clue why because I rarely go swimming and have a fear of the ocean, but I love water in photographs. How do you describe your style of photography? DIY, do it yourself. I don’t have an assistant or have someone fanning me while spending hours setting up one shot. I am more gonzo style and again, make it up as I go along. I never know exactly what I am going to end up with even if I have an idea before we start, I can pick up something else that works and just go with it. It seems to work for me and the models I shoot always tell me my shoots are fun. Are there any faces you would love to shoot but haven't had the chance yet? Oh yes of course. Marlon Teixeira has always been at the top of my list. I love his face and everything about him. Jon Kortajarena is another one I would cut off my right leg to shoot. I loved him in Tom Ford’s A Single Man. A small part but he totally worked it. I tend to like bad boys. I am lucky that I have been able to shoot many models that I have wanted to. Zeb Ringle and I used to shoot almost every weekend when he was modelling and I still try and get him to take some shots to this day, but I think he would rather eat glass than be a model again. Josh Kloss is one of my all time favourites. When we shoot I can go and go and not stop because he is so much fun to work with and he trusts me and lets me do what I want. I can’t wait to see what people are going to say when our ‘project’ finally comes out. I am very proud of it.
24 / QUEL HOMME / ISSUE 1 / BEVERLY HILLS
Are there any other artists you admire and follow? I love Hurrell and all his old Hollywood portraits of the studio contract stars. Hands down, my favourite photographer. I am a huge fan of old Hollywood and that era of glamour and sophistication and the overall look from the 30s, 40s, 50s is a huge inspiration to me.
PHOTO: Matt Poesch by Scott Hoover
Film noir. Herb Ritts could not be topped in what he did, his images are iconic and timeless. Helmut Newton’s work is always an inspiration and I wish I could let myself be so bold and daring. It’s funny you said ‘artists’ because I think that is key really. Anyone can technically take a photo. Hold the camera, point it, shoot, throw on some filters and there you go. But I think with an artist it is more about the passion and less about technical. You can tell when someone really loves what they do, and it’s what sets them apart from the pack. Their photograph may say something different to everyone who views and lets you decide as opposed to telling you what it is, it’s about how it makes you feel. On Instagram there is so much talent, and of course even more pointless junk in general, but follow people like Jeremy Kost, Tom Ford, Bruce Weber and lots of models and agencies, but also people I find fascinating like Lana Del Rey. To me she is like the ultimate coolest hip chic ever.

Do you prefer shoots or catwalks? I love catwalks - everything from the adrenaline backstage to walking down the runway. What would you say is your best feature? My eyes *winks*, at least that's what people say. Where will you be travelling next New York and Milan. Planning on exploring new markets this year. INSTAGRAM: charliem015

GROOMING GORNIK & DRUCKER The Old World barber shop inside Montage Beverly Hills has become an institution and a favourite of celebrities and movie stars since 1936. Any gentleman must experience this hidden gem, come to be known as ‘the Home of the Shave.’ Gornik & Drucker was the combination of two barbering forces; William Gornik of the Golden Razor, and Rothchilds, combined in 1989 with Harry Drucker of Druckers Barber Shop. William still barbers in the shop today. Being such an institution, when Montage built their Beverly Hills property they invited the shop into the hotel to ensure it was in the same position as before. www.gornikanddrucker.com

THE SHAVE BEVERLY HILLS
The luxury barber and retail space has a member’s club feel and a classic barbershop vibe. The professional skin therapists guide visitors toward the products that combat dry, irritated or sensitive skin, and are experts in the age-old art form of wet shaving. Everything from haircuts and shoe shines to body massages, old-fashioned shaves and signature services such as ‘Uni-brow Surgery’ and ‘Sweater Removal’ are offered.
Only the best quality products are used here. The signature shave starts as soon as you walk through the door with a complimentary whisky on arrival. Once in the barber chair and put into a reclined position, the gentleman barber and an assistant take turns applying hot towels and specialty skin care products. A straight edge razor ensures the closest, cleanest shave. After the shave, the assistant applies a hydrating mask and continues to massage the head, neck and hands. www.theshavebeverlyhills.com
