hen I was a grad student, I sometimes felt that I was incapable of anything and inferior compared to other students. At such time, I always read this quote from Marie Curie to get inspired: "Life is not easy for any of us. But so what? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted with something and that this thing must be achieved." Mitsue Islas Hosokawa, Administrative Assistant

I

’m grateful and pleased to be part of California University of Management and Sciences with you. While we’ve been through some tough times in the past few years. I wish 2019 will be a great time for you and me. I hope that the time spent in CALUMS will be the time that makes your dream come true. Specially, for New Students. Good Luck! Hongjun Ahn, Registrar

“One of the most important benefits of education is that it equips us with the ability and skills to face and overcome challenges.” Accreditation Update SASHA SAFARZADEH Associate Academic Dean

2018 has truly tested that. Every university in the United State is ultimately governed by the Department of Education, which overlooks accreditation agencies. After two years of review by the Department of Education, on November 21, 2018 Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos issued a final decision to reinstate the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) as a recognized accreditor. A month later, ACICS informed CALUMS that it has approved the university’s accreditation for another two years. This could not have been accomplished without the hard work of the administration, faculty and staff. I would like to thank them for their exceptional work and dedication. Since CALUMS’ founding in 1998, the university has stood behind its mission statement “to provide high quality and affordable education to serve the intellectual and professional needs of individuals and organizations.” Over the years, the university has developed its academic programs to meet the ever-changing needs of organizations. As the programs have grown, the university has been honored to have highly skilled and experienced faculty who bring hands-on exercises to the classroom. With 2018 behind us, we look forward to the new year and experiences to come. Rest assured that the university is constantly working to stand by its founding philosophy of Values, Versatility and Technology. We are excited about the future, and would like to welcome you to CALUMS. May your coursework challenge you, develop you, and prepare you for the road ahead. I wish you all the best, and look forward to seeing you soon. ⑥

Taxation Tips for International Students Some of the CALUMS MBA program graduates are working for accounting firms as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since they graduated from CALUMS. The following information was provided from one of them just for your reference. Because of the Trump tax reform, generally, all the international students (Nonresident Alien) who received the Form W-2 from schools are required to file tax returns for 2018 regardless of their income level. For example, if you were an international student with an F-1 visa and worked at CALUMS as a student worker anytime in 2018, you must receive your Form W-2 (2018) from CALUMS and file your tax returns by using the information on your W2 From (2018). If you were temporarily present on an “F”, “J”, “M’, or “Q” visa in the U.S. as a nonresident alien student, teacher, trainee or researcher in the previous year, you are required to file tax returns for compliance with tax laws. Studying, teaching, and doing research in the U.S. are all considered to be activities in which the taxpayer is engaged in a trade or business. General 2019 IRS and State 2018 Income Tax Return Due Dates are April 15, 2019. The abovementioned information is very general and each person has a different condition to file the tax returns in the U.S. The information contained within this article is provided for informational purposes only by the Benjamin Koo & Co. CPAs and is not intended to substitute for obtaining accounting, tax, or financial advice from a professional accountant. Readers are advised not to act upon this information without seeking the services of a professional accountant. For more details in filing tax returns, please contact the Student Services Office at studentservices@calums.edu. A handout file will be provided to you via email. For further questions in filing tax returns in the U.S., you may contact Benjamin Koo & Co. CPAs via phone at (213) 388-5555. ⑦
