Heaven’s Heroes CD Now Available

This year’s edition of “Heaven’s Heroes” will be available to all families beginning March 7. These CDs contain audio stories of heroes of the Christian faith that will inspire and encourage your family in your walk with Christ. Previous year’s CDs are also being offered. This year’s CD is available free for children in our WOW program, or for a suggested donation of $2.00 in the library on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights, and also at the Media Desk on Sunday mornings.

What is your role at Calvary Church?

My title is Director of Culinary Services and my job is Executive Chef. I organize all the food service events, purchase the food, prepare and supervise the assembly of the menu items, and work handin-hand with Calvary’s most capable staff in all aspects of front and back of the house activities.

What encourages you most as you minister at Calvary?

I am greatly encouraged by the opportunity to create wonderful food from scratch for our casual and complicated menus. Ultimately, it’s all about the people here at Calvary. I especially adore my fellow staffers. The kitchen staff is highly dedicated and a godly source of encouragement. I have constant access to prayer, and serve the most wonderful folks in the world here at Calvary. The board and the pastoral staff are also highly supportive and have given me freedom to grow spiritually and mature into a godly servant for all who require my services.

How have you experienced life{together}?

I never thought that working in a church would be something I would ever consider. I wasn’t looking for work but when the opportunity was presented to me from Ed Dobson at my restaurant way back in 1996. I felt such strong conviction I had to accept the position. I was pretty unrefined back then, and I believe God brought me here to keep me under control and to prepare me for now. Pastor Jim is teaching us all about community and I believe the staff here at Calvary is my small group community.

All that I need for my happiness is here at Calvary. Here is where I toil and worship. I am always in the presence of my church family. Just by the nature of my position I am held at a high level of accountability which is a constant reminder to keep it godly.

How has God recently revealed Himself in your community?

I never understood what “a personal life with Jesus” meant until I was diagnosed with ALS. Immediately my needs changed and I was forced to make deliberate decisions on how to live the rest of my life. ALS is terminal and unpredictable. I may live three to five years or longer, but I needed to plan on dying soon. I received counsel from Pastor Jim and Pastor Steve, Ed Dobson, Clare DeGraaf and others and started to pray about specific needs. God has been there and has supplied my wife and me with all that we need and has proved that he is my personal Lord and Savior. I had never doubted it, but felt distant because I was never in a place where I needed God like now. God is my best friend and will never betray me and has prepared a place for me and I know I will be there when He calls for me.

How can the Calvary family pray for you and your ministry this month?

Please pray for my wife, she suffers most with this disease. My family and friends are having a really tough time dealing with the inevitability and the consequence of ALS. Please pray that I will continue to hold my head high and to be a constant source of encouragement to others and to be a living testament of Jesus Christ.

I love Lies Young Women Believe because young women are made to believe so many lies the world tells us about God, sin, relationships, our image and much more. The authors take the top 25 lies young women are told and expose them with Biblical truth. By the end of the book, every young woman will know the truth and how to combat the lies she is told in the future. Jesus has called us to a life of prayer and has given us his prayer life as an example to follow. Many times we as Christian’s fall short for a variety of reasons and need encouragement from time to time to lead a life of prayer. I have found Andrew Murray’s With Christ in the School of Prayer a must read to bring me back on solid ground and encourage me in my prayer life. Are you struggling in your prayer life? Do you find not all your prayers are answered? Within the pages of this book are deep spiritual truths that Murray uses to convey to the reader what true prayer is and how to live a life like Christ through intercessory prayer. Ruthless Trust has been very influential in my spiritual journey. It’s a book that has helped me to understand and experience ruthless trust in God alone. It’s given me a new appreciation of what it means to love and serve God without striving.

20 new community Groups launched on February 12 On Sunday afternoon, February 12, over 200 people began doing Life Together with other Calvary Church attendees. It was exhilarating to feel the excitement in the room as the Fellowship Hall was filled with people meeting their groups for the first time. Some of them had done community before—for others it was the first time. Most people had never met each other before becoming part of their group and were surprised by how quickly they bonded. It was evident that God had His hand in this and was orchestrating it as we tried to find the right demographic mix for each group, while accommodating specific nights of the week that each could meet! In addition to the 56 existing Community Groups, 20 new groups were formed, from college students through retired adults—from Allendale to Lowell, from Middleville to Rockford and beyond. This is such an exciting time to be involved in ministry here at Calvary Church and we are committed to getting everyone connected in meaningful community. We always need people who are willing to facilitate a group by opening their home and/or facilitating a discussion. Most of our groups that have been meeting for a while are so thankful that they made the commitment to community. Some had tried community in the past and didn’t have a great experience, but tried again and are so thankful that they did. Thanks to all who stepped out in faith to foster new friendships, study the Bible, pray for each other and care for one another. Kids serving our community

During the month of January, kids at WOW put their faith into action by collecting items for the Pregnancy Resource Center. At WOW, kids have learned from the book of James that God wants us to respect others. Collecting and donating items like diapers, wipes, and other baby supplies respects and honors the most valuable of lives. Here’s the thank you note from the staff at the Pregnancy Resource Center: Last year the PRC gave close to 80,000 items to needy children. Please thank all the children in your ministry program for their generous gift for babies. Tell them we think they are the best!

Serving at Calvary with Renny Schoonmaker Where do you currently serve at Calvary? I volunteer in the Middle School Ministry (MSM) where Sam Schaefer and I lead a small group of 7th grade yahoos at the Wednesday night Oasis program. With the collective MSM group on Sundays, I occasionally speak, and more often, don my pitchin’ cap and chuck Smarties at/to kids who have the right answers to assorted trivia questions. They’re sharp, and I don’t often stump them!

How did you begin serving at Calvary? My wife Nancy and I got in the mix in 1992, when we first came to Grand Rapids and Calvary, by volunteering in the nursery, as well as helping to launch what was then known as a “subcongregation” called Parents of Young Children. It later became Family Matters as all of our tadpoles got bigger! As my own kids aged, Nancy and I got involved with Calvary Corners (remember that one?), which later morphed into Kingdom Kids. From there I went into the M-56 student ministry for 5th and 6th graders, and finally landed in JHYG about 7 years ago with the 7th and 8th graders, which has since become MSM. What challenges have you encountered in your ministry? The fear of running out of ideas or energy! But what I’ve seen over the years is God’s willingness to supply both, when my own supply gauge is a tad below empty. Sometimes He supplies at the 11th hour, but I don’t recall Him ever leaving me high and dry. He’s great like that. How has God blessed you through serving? I came to Christ when I was 14, and spent the following ten years or so coasting through some modest growth, but doing very little to contribute to the Kingdom that had embraced me. By my mid-twenties, I’d become tired of the sidelines and felt the need to be actively involved in the play, but for years couldn’t find a place to fit. Then things began to open up, and I have since been permitted many places to fit, right up to the current placement in MSM. How has God blessed me? By granting me a piece of the action! I’ve come to realize that it’s not a right of membership, but a privilege that God allows in His time, even to cracked vessels. It’s a blessing to feel useful, especially to One to Whom I owe so much. How do you experience community at Calvary? The large Sunday morning service reminds me that God’s sandbox is a lot bigger than mine. Our five couple study group reminds me that His enormity is no barrier to close and personal relationship. The diversity of age, gender, culture, race, personality and taste in the Calvary community, bound by the abiding influence of that Carpenter from Nazareth, reminds me to be broad in my tolerance and affection for others. And the Carpenter’s tolerance and affection for me, often best experienced in that community, reminds me to return thanks.

God has designed you in a way that is totally unique from everyone else. That means that you have special gifts that ONLY YOU can give to serve God and others. We want to empower you to find the right fit in ministry. “From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Ephesians 4:16). Special Needs Ministry Commitment to Christ, Community and Communion As we partake in communion, the Lord’s Supper, we commune with God and other believers. It is a time of reflection and commitment as we remember Christ’s death on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” (in heaven) The same is true in the Go Getter community. The students are taught about how Christ death and resurrection has allowed them to be released from confessed sin and live eternally with him in heaven. The Holy Spirit guides their hearts and minds and they accept what Christ has done. 1 John 1:9 “If we admit that we have sinned, (God) will forgive us our sins. (God) will forgive every wrong thing we have done.” With uninhibited faith and joy they came to the table, understanding the purpose and significance of communion. As a community of believers they were grateful for the wonderful gift of God, Jesus, and joyful to be celebrating this most precious gift with their body of believers. John 14:26 “But the counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Community, Commitment, Compassion, Challenges

There is a small community of children and volunteers who meet weekly in room 114 during the third service. Each one, the children, and the volunteers were individually knit together in their mother’s wombs, fearfully and wonderfully made by our great God! They accept one another just as Christ has accepted them. The committed parents bring their children weekly so that they can have an hour of worship time while their children are being lovingly looked after and taught about Jesus.

The volunteers compassionately give the precious gift of their time for about an hour each Sunday. At the present time, God has blessed the Explorer class with some special students who have exceptional needs. Many more compassionate, loving volunteers are needed to support these families and spend time with their children.

The community is called Explorers! I invite you to contact us to explore the riches and blessings that can be yours by becoming a part of this community of believers.

Committing to Overcome Challenges within your Community

Have you ever considered the families of Explorers, Seeker, and Go-Getters of Calvary Church and how they “fit” into how community is being done here at Calvary? Has the community group that you are part of ever considered or recognized that there are families within the church who either have children, youth or adults with special needs, who may be struggling with where they and their child fit within the community model? The dynamics of the family may not be “typical,” but the rewards of including such a family in a community group could be immeasurable. The body of Christ is intended to be inclusive of all who have been made whole in Jesus Christ! 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts: and though all its parts are many, they form one body…those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensible and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor!” Jesus’ ministry was full of compassion for others. Would you consider committing yourself to the same kind of compassion that Jesus showed? Compassion connects people to one another as opposed to pity which separates people. No family is free from the challenges that are a product of our fallen world. Committing to be a community that supports and loves everyone is so clearly what God has commanded. At WOW, the Globe Trotters spend the evening “traveling” to different places around the world, learning about the different cultures, sights, and tastes that God created. Recently they learned about the world’s largest city, Tokyo, and the challenges of spreading the Gospel in an urban environment. According to Operation World, the Japanese are the third largest unreached people group. The Globe Trotter kids wrote Haiku prayers, asking God to work in the hearts of the Japanese.

As we plan for the services, we would appreciate your prayer not only for the preparation, but for those who will be in attendance. Preparing for Easter (February 22 – April 7)

This is a time for spiritual preparation, leading up to Holy Week and Easter. It’s about focusing our hearts on our relationship with God. During these weeks, we encourage you to fast from something, setting aside certain foods or nonessential activities. The purpose of fasting isn’t depravation, but dedication to God. Here at Calvary, we encourage you to participate in this early Christian tradition. The fruit of preparation is both a deeper relationship with God now and a more exuberant and mindful celebration of Easter in six weeks. During this season, every time you think about what you have given up, the hope is that you would do two things: 1) Thank Jesus for suffering for you; and 2) Pray that those whom Jesus suffered for, who do not know Him, will come to the Easter service and hear the gospel.

Palm Sunday (Sunday, April 1) services at 8:10, 9:40 and 11:15am and 6:00pm Palm Sunday Musical

On Palm Sunday, we celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before His death and resurrection. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. The Bible tells us that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted Him with waving palm branches, and by covering His path with palm branches. Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, He begins His journey to the cross. The Bible passages of Palm Sunday can be found in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:111, Luke 19:28-44 and John 12:12-19.

Maundy Thursday (Thursday, April 5)

Good Friday (Friday, April 6)

Traditionally the Christian Church has referred to this day as Maundy Thursday, from the Latin word “mandatum.” The term is usually translated “commandment,” from John’s account of this night. According to the book of John, as Jesus and the disciples were eating their final meal together before His arrest, He washed the disciples’ feet to illustrate humility and servanthood.

Good Friday is the day Christ died on the cross, the Friday before Easter. As the most somber day in the Christian calendar, it is a day for prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross. Since Christ’s death on the cross is central to the Christian faith, the events of that day should be ever on our minds. We celebrate Good Friday with a subdued evening service, remembering the night of Christ’s death.

During the Passover (Lord’s Supper), Jesus took bread and wine and asked His Father to bless it. He broke the bread, giving it to His disciples saying, “This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then He took the cup of wine and said, “This wine is the token of God’s new covenant to save you−an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you.” During our Maundy Thursday service, you will see people washing the feet of others to demonstrate humility and servanthood. We will also partake in the Lord’s Supper just like Jesus did on the night He was betrayed. The Bible passages of Maundy Thursday can be found in Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-38, John 13:1-17, and I Corinthians 11:23-25.

From the earliest days of the church, Easter has been celebrated by all Christians everywhere. As the most important day in the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday is the day that we celebrate the bodily Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our observation of Lent and Holy Week will better prepare our hearts to celebrate the power and joy of Christ’s resurrection on Easter. As we prepare for Easter, we think about Jesus’ sacrifice for us, which should stir our hearts toward gratitude. During these weeks, perhaps you might consider putting aside some money that could be used toward a special offering that will be taken during the Good Friday service. The offering will be used to help with the Manasseh Project, a shelter and recovery center for children who are victims of sex trafficking in West Michigan, operated by Wedgwood Christian Services. Wedgwood was founded in 1960. Two separate homes for troubled adolescents, one for girls started by staff and members of Calvary Church and the other serving boys started by staff and members of LaGrave CRC, eventually merged to become Wedgwood Christian Services in 1970. Today, Wedgwood’s central objective is taking on the toughest issues facing youth, addressing the harsh realities that result from parental abuse and neglect, substance abuse and other damaging socioeconomic problems. They help free children and teens from lives of despair and strive to instill hope and healing by providing excellent care, counseling, education and prevention programs that enable at-risk youth to experience stable, healthy and productive lives. The Manasseh Project began shortly after social workers at Wedgwood helplessly watched as a child they knew and cared for was trafficked and exploited in Grand Rapids. Despite all their efforts to find her and offer her aid, they were unable and ill-equipped at the time to address her needs and trauma. Unwilling to stand still and watch this happen again, they began to research the issue of human trafficking, both globally and locally, while developing relationships with anti-trafficking organizations in West Michigan, and from there the project began. In Wedgwood’s experience, and that of other providers, the extreme nature of the trauma sex trafficking victims endure is most effectively treated by having the victims in a separate facility with a single, focused treatment approach versus being in other facilities and programs with children with a variety of mental health issues. The problem of sex trafficking is growing in all urban areas in Michigan and the Midwest, and yet there are few treatment programs such as this. Therefore, Wedgwood hopes to build a Shelter Care Home/Trauma Recovery Center for children who are

providing shelter and healing for victims of trafficking in west michigan

victims of sex trafficking in West Michigan. This would be very similar to Anne’s House, a successful residential treatment program for the victims of sex trafficking operated by the Salvation Army in Chicago. The project name, Manasseh, is derived from the account in Genesis where Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery; in this he became the first well-documented trafficking victim. When Joseph was rescued from the prisons in Egypt and brought into power, he reflected upon God’s grace by naming his firstborn Manasseh (causing to forget): “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.” The Lord gave Joseph a present and future despite the horror of his past. Joseph experienced rescue and restoration and the goal of this safe house is to provide the same experience for victims of trafficking in West Michigan. Over the past few years, Calvary’s Deacons have been praying and asking God to show them how they can fulfill their biblically mandated responsibility to care for the widows and the orphans. Incidentally, many victims of trafficking are sold into slavery by their loved ones, leaving them without a support network even once rescued. We truly feel that these are today’s orphans and praise God for providing us with the opportunity to care for them through this project. Calvary has a unique opportunity during this season to join Wedgwood in building this safe house. The offering to help fund The Manasseh Project will be taken during the Good Friday Service. We hope you will be in prayer as to how God wants to use your giving to meet the needs of the hurting and provide a place of refuge and recovery here in West Michigan.

Calvary Café

9:00am-11:15am in the Gym The Calvary Café is designed to give you the opportunity to mingle with other attendees between services. Stop in for a cup of coffee and a donut. From discussing the morning’s sermon to catching up on your community group leader’s recent vacation, the Calvary Café is a great place to gather for conversation.
