In Profile CRUISING AHEAD

When Ann Michel had a stroke In December 2015, the last thing her family could imagine was seeing her well and mobile enough to set sail on a cruise.

Following weeks in rehabilitation and almost a year in permanent care, that’s exactly what she did. After returning to her Newcastle home, Ann and her daughter Jo, headed off on a nine night cruise around the South Pacific to celebrate her recovery from what was a sudden and dramatic lifechanging event. “When we booked the cruise she wasn’t even out of care,” said Jo. “I thought I’d do it and see how she improved. One thing about my mother is, she’s a very determined woman.” Improve she did, with her staunch resolve and the support of her family and carers, Ann, who receives three home care visits each week, now uses a walker and has achieved a level of independence that at one stage never seemed possible. 6

...One thing about my mother is, she’s a very determined woman. Ann’s determination is a key reason their dream of taking a cruise became a reality. “We managed all right,” said Ann. “We watched shows and I did enjoy it. I’d say Noumea was probably my favourite place.” Ann and Jo loved their cruise so much that they and Ann’s husband, Peter, are now contemplating taking another cruise together later this year. Jo has recently taken off for two months to work in America with the peace of mind that Calvary will continue to support her mother’s independence.

Let's Talk.

One of the most stressful encounters we can face in older age is the thought of losing our independence and moving into a nursing home. The truth is, a very small percentage of Australians live in high care facilities. Government changes to Home Care Packages last month mean that you now have greater control over the services that really inspire independence and ‘living well at home’.

8

Continuing the Mission of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary

Nursing Homes vs Care at Home Making the right choices for the right reasons. Perhaps the greatest key to maintaining independence at home is reassuring those around you that you are capable. Reassurance. You’re not the only one who needs it. Family, friends, doctors and health professionals need reassurance as much as you in knowing that you are safe and well. A general reluctance to notice small things, whilst family or friends notice on your behalf might mean that you could be left out of future planning. There is often a sense of guilt associated with not being able to look after you ‘the way they would like to’, so when your family or friends are pushed away from suggesting help, they often discuss your needs with others, rather than you. Being honest can solve lots of headaches and heartaches down the track. A conversation with your friends, family, health professionals or doctors about assistance in your home, or with things that are becoming difficult to deal with means that you have control and

can actively begin to work through these concerns. How ignoring situations can cause bigger problems. Most instances of people reaching out to obtain Home Care Packages happen after an incident has occurred. It may be a fall, a kettle left to boil dry, or family members not being able to contact you and worrying. Finding assistance immediately after an incident can be stressful for your family, so talking about your needs early means that an emergency incident can be safeguarded and potentially prevented. So, what is considered ‘living well at home’? For some people, it means that they’d like a little bit of cleaning and cooking done around the house. Others might need some personal care like showering, transport to the shops or help in the garden. Even a little bit of respite time can be great - like a trip to the movies or theatre with a friendly Support Worker. Services can go right up to nursing and 24 hour care.

Get Active. Feel Great.

I love to dance, dance, dance. Foxtrot, salsa, rumba, tango‌ put on your dancing shoes and let’s dance!

You don’t have to glide across the dance floor like Ginger Rogers or Fred Astaire to enjoy this wonderful pastime. Dancing is a fantastic hobby which can improve balance, strength and mobility, as well as provide a whole lot of enjoyment. You just need to be willing to give it a try! It is one of many therapeutic activities helping people find new vitality and meaning in their lives, thanks to the great work of Diversional Therapists around the country. Put simply, Diversional Therapy is stimulating and enriching leisurebased lifestyle activities, specifically designed for seniors, those less mobile or those with disabilities. These activities can be anything from Tai Chi and meditation through to gardening, art classes, crafts and, of course, dancing.

Each is aimed at improving participants’ quality of life, selfesteem and personal fulfilment by enhancing memory and problemsolving skills, as well as promoting better movement and coordination. According to Margie Kennard from Diversional Therapy Australia, the peak national body, Diversional Therapy is about “empowering people to fully participate in life through leisure activities of their own choosing. It’s all about choice. It’s not fun if it’s not of your own choosing.” Dancing in particular, says Margie, is an activity that has been scientifically proven to have significant cognitive benefits. “Dancing with a partner, and dancing to music operates so

many areas of the brain that it’s more beneficial than going to the gym and exercising.” People at all levels of mobility and ability can join in dance classes, and carers, partners and friends are also welcome to participate. Classes can be tailored to suit people of all needs, even if you’re dependent on a wheelchair or walker. Those with dementia and Parkinson’s Disease have been shown to respond well to rhythmic dances like the tango, which engage the parts of the brain affected by the disease. There are numerous private operators who can help you enjoy the fun and challenge of working your brain, body, and memory through dance. The best way to find these providers is through your local council. You can find out more about Diversional Therapy Australia at: www.diversionaltherapy.org.au

Diversional Therapy activities like dancing can be life-changing and are for individuals and groups focussing on: • G iving purpose and meaning to life through activity and involvement.

• E ncouraging communication, expression, socialisation and reminiscence.

• M aintaining use of visual and hand skills.

• S trategies that help with memory, orientation, mood swings and daily living.

• A llowing participants to work within their own capabilities. 14

Values in Action COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND COUNTRY

Meet Sister Anne Gardiner AM, Senior Australian of the Year. An advocate of peace, love, education and culture.

Much loved and respected, Sister Anne Gardiner has earned an enduring place in the Tiwi peoples’ hearts.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Senior Australian of the Year Sister Anne Gardiner (Photo courtesy of: ABC News)

Draped in the Tiwi flag, Sister Anne appeared like a prize fighter accepting her Order of Australia, and many could attribute her honour to her tireless work within her beloved Bathurst community.

A vibrant, intelligent and humble woman, Sister Anne took the opportunity in her speech to pay homage to the local people she has worked with and passed on her wisdom of acceptance to all Australians.

During her 62 years on the island, Sister Anne has been principal of the local school, has taught and recorded the Tiwi language and established the Patakajiyali Museum. All this, whilst running regular prayer meetings, founding an op shop and starting a coffee shop to support the community.

“I pray that all people in our wonderful country Australia — regardless of language, culture, skin colour or religious belief — may stand tall as proud Australians.” Regularly supporting Calvary programs within Tiwi and NT, Sister Anne is also assisted by Calvary weekly domestic services.

If you’ve ever thought about taking a cruise but never have, you might be surprised to know that these days cruise lines are catering more and more for senior travellers. Just because you’ve reached a certain age, doesn’t mean you can’t get out there, set sail and enjoy a fantastic holiday on the open seas.

One of the great things about going on a cruise, compared to air travel or a road trip, is that you get to visit multiple locations but only need to unpack your bags once. The comforts of your choice of cabin mean that you have a ‘home base’, while escaping on your adventure. What’s more, there’s a range of cruises to suit all tastes, needs and budgets. Modern cruise ships provide friendly service and support, professional medical services in case of an emergency, as well as easy access for those less mobile or with disabilities. Your trip is fully pre-paid; so you can enjoy an expanse of great food, loads of age-friendly activities, and entertainment like movies, live music

and stage shows, without paying a cent more. Optional extras such as speciality dining and pamper packages are also available at an additional cost. There are a range of destinations and duration options. If you want to dip your toe in the water, you can choose a short ‘local’ cruise within Australia or New Zealand. For those who’d like to drop anchor in more exotic locations, why not extend your horizons to the Hawaiian Islands or Caribbean, or experience breathtaking natural wonders like the inside passage of the Gulf of Alaska?

Health & WellBeing DON’T LET DIZZINESS PUT YOU OFF BALANCE

Do you ever feel dizzy? Lose your balance? There are many reasons dizziness occurs, like high or low blood pressure, medication alteration, middle ear infection or dehydration.

Prevention of dizziness and/or loss of balance: • change position slowly. Wait until you are balanced before walking; • avoid turning your head quickly or suddenly; • if you feel dizzy, stop what you are doing and sit down until it passes; • drink at least 2 litres of fluid a day unless your doctor has advised you to restrict your fluid intake; • be careful when you bend your head back, or look up; • avoid climbing ladders or onto chairs if dizziness/loss of balance is an issue. Seek urgent medical help if dizziness is associated with: • pain, pressure, heaviness or tightness in the chest, shoulders, neck, arms, jaw, or back; • feeling sick, cold sweats, shortness of breath; • numbness or weakness in face, arm or leg; • trouble talking, understanding or swallowing;

Your doctor may be able to work out the cause, with information from you such as when you experience dizziness, what brings it on, what settles it and how long it lasts. In many cases, dizziness can be treated.

30

• blurred or poor vision in one or both eyes; • loss of balance or unexplained falls; • confusion or becoming unconscious.

A little personal care goes a long way. Calvary can organise a quick 45 minute personal care visit to your home to get you ready for the evening or up and about in the morning.

Founded by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Calvary is a charitable, Catholic health care organisation operating in six of Australia’s States and Territories with 12,000 staff and volunteers. We have a special concern for those most vulnerable and those reaching the end of their life. For over 130 years Calvary has provided health, aged and community care in a range of settings, including public and private hospitals, residential aged care and the community.
