I always look forward to summer; more time to relax and socialise with friends and family. But not everyone feels so positive at this time. It’s timely to reach out to someone you care about – a neighbour, an old friend, a distant relative. A simple phone call or card provides a boost to the recipient and will put pep in your step too.

In Profile CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

In a funky little theatre on Flinders Lane, Greg Muir, Calvary client of many years gives his last surreal performance of White Day Dream.

After the powerful performance you’re left wondering how Greg could possibly have time for all his passions; art, history and football. In his brimming schedule, it was nearly impossible to grab his time. Greg told me about the crunch and grind of his balloon footy league (BFL), which despite the name is not a game for the fainthearted. He is a prolific artist attending classes twice a week, yet still manages to make time for laughs and secret men’s business with his Men’s Group. A regular visitor to the Koorie Heritage Trust, Greg continues to record his family tree. He urges each support worker to join him there to grow their understanding and appreciation of his people, the Yorta Yorta tribe. Greg, still buzzing from being on stage, shifts gears to boast about his beloved Saints footy team, and his cousin, the infamous ‘Mad Dog Muir’. With a touch of pride he says “you know, they call me Mad Dog Muir II”. An excellent signoff for his paintings. Ready to spend his days packed with new things to do, the Mad Dog Muir II won’t slow down anytime soon!

Life Lessons THE SCENT OF HAPPINESS

When Frankie and Herbert married they agreed to live by the pact Albert Einstein made with his wife; He would make all the big decisions and she would make the little decisions. They learnt there hasn’t been one big decision, but many small ones. Arriving from Cologne, Germany, Herbert Mees was contracted to imbue a 200 year old Eau de Cologne 4711 into the psyche of the Australian public. Herbert and his darling, Frankie, on opposite sides of the world wrote to one another for five years before Herbert popped the question. In 1965 Frankie joined Herbert in Australia to build a life and family. Once settled here, Frankie, a trained teacher and athlete worked as a PE teacher, whilst Herbert travelled regularly between Australia and Europe for work. Three children later, and at the age of 52, Herbert was instructed that the Australian arm of 4711 was to close. Out of work, he recognised his age was against him. At 54 he returned to college, studying for nine years while working as a translator. 8

And where did the study lead? To Herbert’s magnum opus, ‘The German Church in the Garden of God’, an 150 year history of the Lutheran Church in Australia. An epic work, with hundreds of contributors, Frankie kept the editors fed and watered throughout production. Frankie and Herbert, now settled in a beautiful village in Croydon, Victoria, receive regular cleaning and odd job support from Calvary, enabling them to maintain their independence. They remain fit with a regular game of croquet. The grounds of which were built through Frankie’s sheer willpower and donations from friends and the wider community. With the scent of summer in the air, they have plenty of time to enjoy it together.

Contemplation THE VEINING OF A NEW YEAR

Beauty is in the petals of a flower, the veining of a leaf, and God would have beauty in every part of human life; every incident, every place, has a special beauty for Him.

Mary Potter

Inspired by his daughter, Mark Green, Calvary’s National Director of Mission looks forward to a new year with the promise of change and possibility. My daughter, Anna, starts school in the New Year. Following two days of orientation in November, Anna has not stopped talking about her new school.

change? I love the sense of opportunity. No matter what has happened before, I can choose to do things differently – start anew, like this infant.

I love the sense of hope that accompanies the lead up to the New Year. It’s like the days before the birth of a child, wondering what he or she will be like. How will our lives

Mary Potter wrote the above words at a time when she was looking forward. May our star of hope rise over a road which opens before us; this road of veining possibility.

Get Active. Feel Great. If you enjoy the challenge and strategy involved in a game of billiards, chess or golf, then croquet may be just the sport for you.

  G N I H T Y EVER

W E N S I OLD

N I A AG

More and more Australians are discovering the wonderful social and physical benefits this unique lawn sport has to offer. It’s a fun and stimulating outdoor activity for all levels of ability and mobility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness. Older than the game of tennis, croquet originated in Victorian England with early championships held at Wimbledon on what have become the tennis courts of today. A singles or doubles game played on lawn, the objective is to hit a sequence of coloured balls through hoops before your opponent. Its various forms allow croquet to be played as a casual pastime, or a more tactical,

competitive game. The time commitment and how serious you want to be is completely up to you. The most common version of the game is Association Croquet, often played by the purists among competition players. However, according to Susan Linge from Croquet Australia, the shorter, simpler adaptation called Golf Croquet is the perfect introduction for newcomers. “Golf croquet is popular as it’s the more socially engaging form of the sport,” says Susan. “The beauty is you can make it as social or competitive as you

want, play for as long as you want, and get as much exercise as you want at the same time.” A typical game takes between 30 minutes to an hour; all you need is a pair of flat-soled shoes and a willingness to try something new. Rules are easy to learn and clubs will provide all the coaching and equipment necessary. If you’re interested, visit the Croquet Australia website which has links to its affiliated state associations. Each member website has a full list of clubs located in metropolitan and regional areas.

MOST CLUBS HAVE REGULAR ‘COME TRY’ OPEN DAYS, SO WHY NOT CONNECT WITH YOUR LOCAL CLUB AND GIVE CROQUET A GO!

Glamping. Like camping, only better. The irresistible new travel trend that will have you leaving civilisation, stuffy hotels and your worries behind. Do you love to holiday in luxury and style, yet long for the days of campfires and bush tucker? Introducing ‘glamping’ – the perfect way to be at one with nature without compromising your creature comforts. What is glamping? Say goodbye to wet, windblown tents and sleeping on the cold bumpy ground. Say hello to ‘glamping’ – camping with a glamorous, luxury twist. Glamping can be what you make it, there’s a style for everyone. 12

Think modern, private bathrooms. Crisp white sheets. And perhaps temperature control at your fingertips. Or your own dressed-up campervan, styled with additions like fairy lights, roll out rugs and throw cushions. You can now find an array of glamping options across Australia. If you prize convenience and comfort, an opulent campervan or cabin could be for you. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, a five-star treehouse or safari tent may be the answer.

Get moving

How to find a perfect glamping site

With so many hours spent indoors, it can be easy to forget the simple joys of adventure and activity. A glamping trip can provide the perfect excuse to get your heart pumping again.

With a growing number of glamping sites across Australia, the hardest decision is working out where to go. You may prefer a short drive getaway, a longer roadtrip – or perhaps interstate travel.

Relax and unwind Do you sometimes feel tense for no apparent reason? Fresh air, sunshine and nature are proven ways to break up the monotony of daily life. Enjoy quality sleep The light from your TV, phone or computer screen can confuse your biological clock. Give your body the good night’s sleep it needs away from the city and technology.

You also need to think about your preferred type of outdoor area. Mountain, valley, ocean, river or forest? If you perform a simple Google search using words such as ‘glamping, ocean, Victoria’, you’ll be presented with many options. Of course, if you have your heart set on a specific location, just enter words such as ‘glamping, Blue Mountains’ instead.

THE DIGITAL

SURFER You may already be surfing the digital wave, or perhaps you’re ready to jump on board and find out what the new world has to offer. It may be as simple as taking a ‘selfie’ on your phone and sharing it with friends, or sending an email to a relative overseas. Modern technology truly has the power to transform our lives. With even the most basic digital surfing skills, you’ll be amazed how much fun you can have exploring the internet and staying connected with family and friends.

20

Continuing the Mission of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary

Connect Up In an instant, social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube can keep us up-to-date with what’s happening in the lives of our loved ones and the world around us.

Connect with grandchildren

Look at family photos

Search for events to attend

Talk regularly to friends

With lots of equipment and devices on the market, it can be a challenge to work out what they all do, and which are best for your needs.

See people who live overseas

Write emails

Plan holidays

Read the latest news

Look up recipes

Or even play chess with someone in Russia

A good way to approach this is to write a simple checklist of what you would like the technology to do for you. For example, what do you want to experience more of?

The possibilities really are endless.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some basic equipment that will help you ‘get surfing’.

Desktop computer OR laptop

Internet connection

Tablet OR smart phone

With an internet connection and one of the options above you’re ready to explore the world.

Big monitor computer: Great for viewing photos in a large format and taking a look at websites.

Whether it’s a train ride in to town, an excursion to a museum, locating a weekend farmer’s market or searching your family tree.

Laptop: Perfect for people on the go and can host lots of different projects you like to work on.

Continuing the Mission of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary

21

Tablet: A good choice for mobile use around the house and outdoors. Takes quality photos and is great for emailing whilst out and about.

Smart phone: A small but powerful source of information, photo capture and texting when you’re out and about.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the clever ways the digital world can get us connected. Skype: One of the most popular sites for making phone calls and video calls on the internet. Calls to other Skype users are free, no matter where the other person is in the world. Internet Phone Calls Like Skype, there are other great apps that let you make free calls from your smartphone, tablet or computer. Popular apps include FaceTime, Viber, Tango, Whatsapp, WeChat and Messenger. You both look so happy...

Email: For the uninitiated, email is a message sent using an electronic mail application such as Gmail and Yahoo. Setting up an account is easy and you can send messages to anyone with an email address. Facebook: The world’s #1 free social networking website. Users can share photos and videos, send messages, even track down people they’ve lost touch with, like an old school friend.

Hi M um we’ve arrived...

Health & WellBeing DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)

Don’t let DVT take the shine off travelling. There are some simple ways to improve your blood flow so you can enjoy your vacation.

What is DVT? Deep vein thrombosis is the development of a blood clot in one of the deep veins within your body. Usually it occurs in the legs, blocking blood flow, and left untreated it can cause serious health issues. DVT has come to the fore in the last two decades. However symptoms and complications can also occur as a result of long periods spent sitting such as car travel and inactivity. What signs should I look for? Common signs include varicose or spider veins and tenderness, cramping, swelling and discolouration in the calf, ankle or foot area. If you experience any of these symptoms it is advised you contact your doctor immediately. How can I prevent DVT? Moving and exercising at regular intervals. Wearing compression stockings assist in pushing blood back up through the lower legs and can reduce swelling and discomfort. Team this with a low fat, high fibre diet, and quit smoking, and you’ll be on the way to a healthier you.

Founded by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Calvary is a charitable, Catholic health care organisation operating in six of Australia’s States and Territories with 12,000 staff and volunteers. We have a special concern for those most vulnerable and those reaching the end of their life. For over 130 years Calvary has provided health, aged and community care in a range of settings, including public and private hospitals, residential aged care and the community.
