Accessible Travel Info Point All In: Everyone included Accessibility is on the rise. More and more proprietors of holiday accommodations find it important that their building is suitable for visitors with a disability. Because accessible accommodations are not only good for people with a disability, they also provide more comfort in general for all. Thus, accessibility is becoming a self-evident component of a high-quality holiday accommodation. This brochure contains 4

holiday accommodations that truly have something to offer in the area of accessibility. Each address in the brochure has been checked by an accessibility agency and has obtained the Flemish label for accessible tourism. You can read about what this label concretely means below in this brochure (pages 7 to 9). Per accommodation, we provide you with general tourist information and a short description of the most important accessibility characteristics. Flemish label for accessible tourism

Since the beginning of 2008, there has been an accessibility label in Flanders for hotels, holiday centres, youth holiday centres, camping sites and guest rooms. This label implies obligations. It is awarded by Tourism Flanders after a thorough examination on site according to the Accessible Flanders methodology. Database Specially trained accessibility supervisors assess the accessibility of a building or exterior environment for diverse forms of disability. This data is entered in a database, and based on the measurement results, the parking area, the entrance, the reception area, the sanitary facilities, etc. Only those elements that are objectively measurable and essential to the accessibility and usability of a building are given a score. These often concern aspects that are important to wheelchair users. If, for example, a bathroom door is too narrow, even the best furnished bathroom is inaccessible to some. If you have a different disability or impairment, you will certainly appreciate your holiday address if you are able to easily manage on your own. These items are also paid attention to during the assessments. They are mentioned for information purposes in the report. When awarding the accessibility label to a hotel, youth accommodation or holiday centre, we pay attention to the access walkway from the public road, the entrance and the reception area, the communal toilet, the restaurant or the dining room and the bedroom with corresponding bathroom. For group accommodation, we also assess the accessibility of the multipurpose room. For a camping area, we look at the parking facilities with access path, entrance and reception area, and the sanitary facilities. Of course, we also assess the corridors between these components for all accommodations.

Flemish label for accessible tourism Toerisme Vlaanderen

Label in 3 levels Based on the results obtained, the label distinguishes three levels. Label A+ means that the holiday accommodation scores positive (+) on the components mentioned on the side. It satisfies strict accessibility standards and is accessible such that the visitor is comfortable and independent. Label A means that the holiday accommodation can be considered to have basic accessibility. Such accommodations are still usable for most people with limited mobility, but extra effort or a helper may be needed. It is certainly advisable to read why a + was not obtained. The informative label (arrow in the circle) only indicates that this building has been objectively examined. If a characteristic is detected that makes the building difficult or impossible to use for some people, also with help, then the holiday accommodation receives a negative score (â&#x20AC;&#x201C;) for this component. In practice, this problem especially applies to wheelchair users. For visitors with a different type of disability or lighter motor impairment, the accessibility offered can still be adequate.

When granting the label, deviations from the scores are possible since the objective measurements do not always take account of the concrete conditions. In case of doubt, we examine the actual situation again on site and test potential bottlenecks with a standard wheelchair. Then the results of the evaluation are presented to a committee especially established for this purpose. The label committee consists of representatives from the disability movement and the tourism sector. In the end, it is this committee that decides which label a building will be awarded or what conditions must first be fulfilled. Finally, a label provides an important first impression, but never says everything. A full description is available for each of these addresses that you can request free of charge from the Accessible Travel Info Point. If you have doubts concerning whether the accessibility offered meets your personal requirements, carefully read this information beforehand. You can also directly contact the holiday accommodation of your choice to discuss items that are not clear beforehand.

Dog-friendly reception This is Zarko. He has studied for two years. You don’t often see such highly-trained dogs. He and his boss are inseparable. When Zarko is working, he wears a coat or a harness with handle. Then he only has eyes for his boss. Don’t distract him, because his task is very important. His boss must be able to trust in him “blindly”. In principle, guide dogs are allowed in all public places in Flanders and Brussels, even in places where dogs are not ordinarily allowed. Some addresses in this brochure emphasise that dogs are welcome – sometimes this applies to all dogs, sometimes only to guide dogs. But even when this is not explicitly mentioned, at least a part of the building is open to the disabled and their guide dog. Not to be missed Kust

Fortissimo This impressive fort takes you back 2 centuries in history. It was built by Napoleon in 1811 in the dunes and was re-opened to the public in 2000. Cultural activities regularly take place in the building and you can enjoy a relaxing visit to the bistro or a gastronomic dinner. Most of the fort is accessible, only the roof of the museum and the bistro and restaurant roof terrace cannot be accessed. A computer will give you all the information about the inaccessible roof. You may need a slight push up the ramp at the entrance. In the adapted toilet (without safety rails) you have sufficient space beside and diagonally in front of the toilet; in front it’s a little tight.

Happy as a King On this former Royal Estate of Leopold II you will find 3 museums close together. The Memorial Prince Karel is a reminder of the period when the Prince Regent stayed here. The notorious Atlantic Wall, a fortified wall that played a determining role in both world wars also ran along here. The archaeological site of Walraversijde goes even further back in time, where you can savour the atmosphere of a 15th century fisherman’s life. Walraversijde is easily accessible. You will also find an accessible toilet with safety rails. Only the ground floor of the Memorial Prince Karel is accessible. Unfortunately the Atlantic Wall is not accessible by wheelchair, but in the memorial you can watch a film about this historic defensive wall. There is good access to ‘Walrave’ Cafe-Restaurant which has an easily accessible toilet.

Mu.ZEE The museum houses a unique collection of Belgian art from 1830 to now. Learn about the Great Masters and be surprised by changing combinations and temporary exhibitions. Most of the rooms are easily accessible. In a manual wheelchair you might need a slight push up a few of the ramps. An accessible lift is also provided. There is good access to the Art Café, although the tables are a little low. At the bookshop you will find an easily accessible toilet.

On sea legs Stand at the helm yourself in this museum with lifelike settings, a fisherman’s house and a fisherman’s café. You will learn the history of the Flemish fisheries through various interactive elements. The museum is accessible, has a lift and an adapted toilet. For a visit to the old fisherman’s house, wheelchair users will probably need a little help. You enter the Herberg de Peerdevisscher via 1 small step. The adapted toilet behind the inn can be reached via the entrance in the Vrijheidsstraat.

Step in More and more coast tram stops are becoming accessible for everyone. These stops are shown on the plan of the coast tram route at www.dekusttram.be with a wheelchair logo. The trams themselves have a lowered central section, so that you can get on and off more easily as a wheelchair user. Carefree sunbathing During the months of July and August, assistants are employed on the beach. They help anyone who needs it: people with a disability, but also people who have been temporarily injured and families with young children. So, they can walk along with you to the tram or bus stop, give a helping hand when switching over to a beach wheelchair to go in the sea or offer assistance with personal care (a visit to the toilet, getting dressed and undressed, etc.). The assistants are trained and are supervised by Intro vzw. Note, however: there is only assistance available in the direct vicinity of the base and for a limited time. A daytrip with an assistant is therefore not possible.

Bivakhuis Hoge Duin is the collective name for three brand-new, trendy accommodation centres within walking distance of Oostduinkerke. De Sloep, De Ark and De Kajuit can be rented together or separately by large or small groups. A great deal of attention was paid to the environment in the construction of the accommodation and in the daily operations. Fair trade is also stimulated.

In bathroom 3 there is sufficient space in front of and diagonally in front of the seat, but a small wall in the toilet next to the seat limits the space at the side (56 cm) (photo 3). De Kajuit has 8 accessible rooms (a total of 20 accessible beds) and 2 bathrooms in the corridor. Sufficient space in front of and diagonally in front of the seat, but limited space next to the seat (53 cm). All bathrooms have a roll-in shower with a shower seat (38 x 36 cm) and a safety rail. The toilets have safety rails and sufficient space and the washbasins are suitable for use from a wheelchair. In De Ark another 3 rooms have their own bathroom, but in 2 of them there is no shower seat or safety rails. In the other there is insufficient space beside the seat.

A walk through history The ‘Network of Fortified Cities’ presents a series of heritage circuits in 19 historical and fortified cities in West Flanders, Nord/Pas-de-Calais and Kent. In recent years, accessible walking circuits have been designed in these 19 cities that bring you past the most beautiful ruins of the former city fortifications. In West Flanders these are the cities of Lo-Reninge, Nieuwpoort, Ostend, Ypres and Veurne. ‘Sneukel’ along the Schelde Between the East Flemish Elsegem and Bossuit (West Flanders) they no longer look up when a wheelchair bicycle, a duo-cycle or a tandem goes past. These zoom around much more often over the flat and well-signposted paths of the Sneukel bicycle route. A route that cyclists with and without a disability can enjoy together, that was the dream of the founder ‘t Sneukelwiel. The result is something to be proud of: a chain of 3 loops which lead you 10, 20 or 35 km through rural Flanders. Where the loops meet, hexagonal signposts put you on the right path. Underway you cross the provincial border between East and West Flanders and, if you cycle past Avelgem, also a little way into the “curve” of France. All that time the powerful Schelde is your companion. Moreover ‘t Sneukelwiel also makes a wide choice of ordinary and adapted bicycles available for individual visitors and organizations.

Towering above the Westhoek The IJzertoren houses a museum about World War I and II. You can experience both wars, feel the fear of soldiers and citizens, walk in trenches and sit in the middle of bombardments. On the computer of the ‘virtual museum’ you walk through the whole museum at your own tempo, and thus also the floors that cannot be reached with the lift. Roosendael is the ruins of a centuries old abbey estate in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. This estate of approximately 17 hectares alongside the Grote Nete is partly a nature area and nature reserve. Het Rokken is a former chicory kiln on the estate of a farm that dates from 1717 and has been converted into a comfortable bivouac house. It is a rural location on the edge of Roeselare. De Stobbe is a self-catering house for large groups with a spacious kitchen, a number of well equipped day rooms and alternating large and small bedrooms. In De Tilk, hot meals are included. The building contains a spacious dining corner, lounge and kitchenette.

Damian The canonization of Father Damian brings a new internationally public to Leuven. Various locations in the city refer to him. A visit to the sepulchre in the Sint-Antoniuskerk, between the city centre and the Grand Beginage, certainly forms a highpoint. Need nursing? Do you need nursing during your stay? Then you can best contact a home care service. The largest organisation for home nursing, with departments throughout Flanders, is the Wit-Gele Kruis. The contact points for each province can be found at: www.wgk.be.

Aids on your holiday Do you need specific equipment during your holiday? Get away with the bus and tram in Flanders Wheelchair users, people with a pram, travellers with a lot of luggage and other people who are permanently or temporarily less mobile, must reserve their bus or tram travel (and return) at least 24 hours in advance with De Lijn. This can be done by telephone, according to the province of your departure point, on +32 3 218 14 94 (Antwerp), +32 16 31 37 00 (Flemish Brabant), +32 11 85 03 00 (Limburg), +32 59 56 52 56 (West Flanders) or +32 9 210 94 94 (East Flanders). When making a reservation, the telephone operator needs the following details:

- name, address, mobile or phone number - desired date and hour of departure; - place of departure and destination

Below and above the ground with the MIVB (Brussels) For assistance on the metro, you can best call 1 day up to minimum of 1 hour in advance on +32 70 23 20 00, or fill in the form on the link in: www.mivb.be/metroassistance.html?l=fr. The accessible metro stations can be found on the underground railway plan on the website www.mivb.be. The MIVB also organises a door-to-door service for the travel of wheelchair users, people with a visual disability or persons with movement restrictions. The service is provided from Monday to Friday, from 6.30 am to 11.00 pm. From 8.30 pm in the evening the offer is limited. You must, however, be in the possession of the card ‘free companion’ from the NMBS or the ‘national reduction card for public transport’ for persons with a visual disability. To reserve (the first time 8 days in advance, afterwards a minimum of 2 days), in the morning call +32 2 515 23 65, email minibus@stib.irisnet.be or fill in the online form at: http://www.mivb.be/order-minibus.html?l=nl. In the section ‘Limited mobility’ on the MIVB website (www.mivb.be) you can find more information about the accessibility of metro, tram and (mini) bus.
