According to a projection based on foreseeable growth of 2% or more of the incidence of people aged 15+ with such disabilities. In 2006, the Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) conducted by Statistics Canada identified 731,600 people in Québec, that is, 10.6% of people aged 15 and over.

BEHAVIOURS AND ATTITUDES WITH RESPECT TO TOURISM Travel ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ In the last 24 months, 430,572 people (59%) took at least one trip outside their city or municipality for at least a one-night stay. On average, they took 5.7 such trips during the same period. Destinations ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ Québec was by far the most popular destination in the most recent trip category (65%). In the last 24 months, 83% travelled in Québec, 29% in the United States, 26% in Ontario, 22% elsewhere in Canada, 13% in the Caribbean and 11% in Europe. Trip duration ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ The average length of stay in Québec was 4 days. It was 11 days for trips outside Québec (for all respondents: 6.6. days), which is a longer stay when compared with data for the entire population. Objectives of the trip ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ The most frequent main objective (47%) of the most recent trip was visiting relatives or friends. In all, 23% stated that they travelled to relax or have fun, 8% to discover a new region and 6% to attend cultural activities or events. With whom? ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ The majority (64%) travelled with their spouses and/or families, 19% travelled alone and 12% with friends, colleagues or organized groups. Means of transportation ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ The automobile was the most used means of transportation for trips. 31% drove their cars and 39% travelled as passengers. The second most common means of transportation was the airplane (14%).

Adapted services ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ Overall, 40% of respondents indicated they had access to services adapted to their situation during their trip. Travellers outside Québec were more likely to indicate they had such access to adapted services (49%) than those who travelled in Québec (35%). Type of accommodation ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ Overall, 46% of respondents (58% among those aged 65 and over) stated that they stayed with relatives or friends, whereas 37% stayed in a hotel or motel. Commercial accommodations ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ In response to questions specifically addressing people who stayed in commercial accommodations, 60% indicated that these accommodations included equipment making the establishment accessible to people with a physical disability. This percentage was 73% among wheelchair users.

• Total spending ⁄ Respondents’ overall spending during their most recent trip/stay is estimated at $494 million. Based on these data, 151,428 people who took their most recent trip outside Québec (that is, 35.2% of all travellers) spent $319 ­million, which is 64.5% of overall spending. Conversely, 279,144 people who travelled in Québec (64.8%) spent $174.6 million, which is thus 35.2% of overall spending. • Overall value added ⁄ The report of the Institut de la Statistique du Québec produced within the present mandate describes the overall impacts of the $174.6 million in tourism spending by travellers with a physical disability in Québec. The report establishes the overall value added to market prices (remaining in Québec) at $137.8 million.

Prior information ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ A little over a quarter of respondents (27%) indicated they were aware, before their departure for the target destination, of existing services adapted to people in their situation. This percentage rises to 47% among wheelchair users and varies little whether trips were taken in ­Québec (25%) or outside Québec (30%). Sources of prior information ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ Word of mouth and advice from relatives or friends were most often mentioned as sources of information among people who travelled in Québec during their most recent trip (38% vs. 27% among travellers outside Québec). Travel agencies were most often consulted by the latter (35%). Economic component ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ • Average spending per person ⁄ Overall, respondents spent an average of $1,146 on themselves or on people who accompanied them during their most recent trip. Since this type of reported spending focused on 2.0 people, average spending per person can be estimated at $573.
