Camberwell Grammar School is a leading independent school for boys. The Student Body Student Attendance

Parents/Guardians are requested to report reasons for student absence to the School.

Teachers mark an electronic roll each period and the Administrative Officer identifies and determines the nature of any absence, records the details in the School’s administrative system, and makes class teachers aware of a student’s absence through subsequent class rolls. A daily student absence summary report is published on the School’s Intranet for all staff. Staff involved in the pastoral care of particular students liaise with parents if there are concerns regarding attendance. A summary of each student’s attendance is published to parents on their semester report, a digital copy of which is stored on the School’s Intranet.

Attendance data is forwarded to the Australian Government for Years 1 to 10 students biannually, during semesters 1 and 2.

Student Outcomes

It is with a great deal of pride that I congratulate our Class of 2022 for their outstanding VCE results this year. All 178 of our students who completed the year satisfactorily met the requirements of the VCE, and we are very proud of them all. Their results are impressive by any standards – and indeed they are among our best results in the last decade. And given that this group experienced very disjointed years when they were in Years 10 and 11, they have done extraordinarily well.

Sixteen of our students (9%) achieved an ATAR of 99 or better, placing them in the top one per cent of the State. Thirty-five per cent (62 students) achieved a rank of 95 or better, while 51% of our students achieved a score of 90 or better, placing them in the top ten per cent of the State. Our median ATAR score was 90.9 and our average ATAR score was 87.6 – the highest average in over 10 years: the depth of the results is particularly pleasing. There were five perfect study scores across a range of subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematical Methods, Physical Education, and Physics. Twenty per cent of all study scores were 40 or higher, which is an excellent result given that we tend to do the more ‘difficult’ (and higher scaling) VCE subjects.

Last year’s Duces of our School were Gregory Kerdemelidis, Brendan Tse, and Hong (Marco) Xu all of whom scored 99.85. Our Proxime Accesserit was Zac (Daniel) Meagher, who scored 99.7. All four students were actively involved in the full life of the School and worked very hard at their studies.

A further twelve students earned scores of 99 or better. These students also studied a wide range of subjects and actively involved themselves in the life of the School: Lidong Chen, Yuhao (Billy) Ge, Eugene Goh, Akalanka Gunawardana, Jerry Ji, Anh (Jonathan) Le, Ryan Le, Charles Lewis, Thomas Power, Isa Rose, Campbell Rowland, Leo Simo-Orgonas.

I would like once more to publicly acknowledge our remarkable teaching staff who helped our students to achieve these wonderful results. I know that our teachers are very proud of their students, and I am very proud of them. I also congratulate and thank our parents, who have encouraged their sons by supporting them through the ups and downs of an extraordinary VCE year.

Congratulations once more to the Class of 2022 on their outstanding results. It is pleasing to see that their hard work has been rewarded so generously.

Student Destination

Destinations - Class of 2022

174 of the 178 Camberwell Grammar School students who successfully completed their VCE applied to undertake tertiary study in 2023. Whilst 170 students received offers in December, an additional 29 offers were made in January, and another 16 in the February rounds, with all applicants successfully receiving an offer. Whilst most students received just one offer, 25% received two or more. In terms of preferences, 82% of applicants received their first or second options. Three students have chosen to study interstate, and two have indicated that they will be accepting scholarship offers to study in the USA beginning later in 2023.

The University of Melbourne and Monash University accounted for 69% of offers received; however, significantly more students were offered places at Monash (70) compared with Melbourne (48). Whilst our students have shown a clear preference for Monash in recent years, the gap is certainly widening. This can be partly attributed to the reduction in ATARs required for Monash courses (resulting from fewer international students) but this is the first time in the last decade that more of our highest achieving students (those with ATARs above 95) have selected Monash (29) over Melbourne (25). Tertiary Placements 2020-2022

The following table highlights the fields of study that our 2022 cohort intend to pursue this year. Once again, Management and Commerce remains the clear favourite, with almost one-third of our students choosing those courses, though many undertake it as part of a double degree. The next most popular area is Pure Science, confirming the strong preference many have for generalist Science degrees. Interestingly, more students have selected undergraduate Law courses (1/3 of Society and Culture students) than has been the case in recent years.

The School values staff satisfaction and wellbeing. Camberwell Grammar has an established Health and Wellbeing Program (CamberWellness) which focuses on improving physical and mental health. The School also offers its staff professional development opportunities, with set days put aside each year for further development and learning. All staff of the School are offered opportunities to broaden their knowledge and enhance their skills. Professional learning covers a variety of topics from role-specific, to leadership, to HR compliance training and more. All academic staff are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

Parent, Student, and Staff Surveys

Parent Satisfaction

The School surveyed parents in 2022 using question items designed by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The survey was carried out electronically. Overall, 315 responses were received out of 1300 students, giving a good return rate.

44 Junior School parents, 134 Middle School parents, and 191 Senior School parents responded (some parents have students in more than one section of the school).

PARENTS INDICATED A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF SATISFACTION WITH THE SCHOOL:

The School achieved 80% approval ratings in almost every area, with respondents indicating either ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’. Notably, 93% of parents felt that their son liked being at Camberwell Grammar School, and 95% reported their son feeling safe at school. Parents overwhelmingly

commended the School as a nurturing, inspiring, and supportive environment. In addition, parents raised valuable points for improvement, which the School will look into. Camberwell Grammar School is committed to constant improvement and welcomes feedback from parents and students.

STUDENTS INDICATED A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF SATISFACTION WITH THE SCHOOL:

Students rated the School highly on key indicators such as teacher expectations and being given the opportunity to do interesting things. Almost all students felt that Camberwell Grammar School is a safe and welcoming place for them, with a range of support offered by teachers. Students

indicated they receive excellent pastoral care, effective teaching, and helpful feedback from their teachers and that the School looks for ways to improve. The School will continue to look for ways to improve with ongoing work with teachers and pastoral care teams in 2023.

Staff Satisfaction

The School surveyed all staff – teaching and non-teaching – in 2022. 97 out of a possible 236 staff responded, giving a response rate of 41%.

KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE:

The responses were overwhelmingly positive. The survey identified several strengths in the School: Staff feel a strong sense of pride and connection to

the School’s goals, values, and vision. Staff share high collegiality with their peers and appreciate the spirit of the School community and the School’s resources and support. However, staff identified a high workload and indicated they would like enhanced collaboration between teams and departments, which will be addressed in 2023.
