Parent Teacher Interviews
Coronavirus (COVID-19)
Senior School House Music Competition
There is much talk and concern about the spreading of Coronavirus and we are monitoring this carefully. The best and most up to date source of information about the virus and how we can best prevent its spread can be found at The Victorian Government’s DHHS site: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/victorian-public-coronavirus-disease-covid-19 and at the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Health site: https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert. We have placed hand sanitising lotion throughout the School and are encouraging our students to practice good hygiene and hand-washing practices, which is the best way to protect against all viruses. I am very grateful to all students and their families who observed a period of self-quarantine at the beginning of the year. With the Easter vacation approaching, I encourage all families who may be travelling through that period to follow Government advice and to be aware that further periods of quarantine may be required on your return to Australia. I believe that many travel insurance companies are also limiting their liability with regards to the virus, so it would be prudent to check with them about possible exposure. The Australian Government is currently recommending against travelling to the following countries who are at a higher risk of COVID-19: Mainland China, Iran, Italy and South Korea. They have also announced that coronavirus travel restrictions have been extended to people travelling to Australia from Iran and South Korea. If a student intends travelling through these countries during the coming Term holidays, then upon returning to Australia parents must ensure that their sons self-isolate for 14 days after leaving these countries before returning to School. I do thank and appreciate your support and understanding in helping to ensure as much as possible, that everyone in our community remains safe and healthy until this outbreak is contained.

Senior School House Music Competition Congratulations once again to all Houses for their performances last week. The House Music competition is an amazing event, and the standard of the music on the night was very high. Each House featured at least once in each of the top three performances over each of the three items – demonstrating how close the competition was. Most impressive is the participation and commitment of all students, who had worked hard over a four week period to present their songs. Their passion and enthusiasm was manifest. I also find it quite moving, when the entire School, united again after intense competition, join together to sing the Anthem from Chess. Congratulations to all House leaders, conductors, arrangers and musicians who prepared and performed. It was a memorable evening. I was pleased to present the Captain of Steven, Finnegan Weston the Shield at yesterday’s Assembly.
Haircuts High standards of dress and appearance are part of our overall commitment to excellence in everything we do, and I do thank all parents for the strong support they give to the school in ensuring that our student’s appearance is neat, tidy and appropriate at all times. A number of our students at present, however, need to take some action in this regard, and some of you may be contacted to seek your assistance in encouraging your sons to have an appropriate haircut. I am grateful for your support in helping us to ensure our students are looking their best at all times.
AGSV Table Tennis Premiership Cup The Captain of Table Tennis, Nathan Shi, was proud to present the AGSV Table Tennis Premiership Cup to the School at our Assembly on Thursday. Nathan has been in the team since he was in Year 7 and has not lost a rubber in all of that time – an extraordinary achievement! Congratulations to the team on an outstanding season. Nathan also won the School Table Tennis Championship last week, and I was pleased to present him with the Shield at the Assembly.

Victor Zhou (11) and Jacob Chappell (12) spoke to us about the amazing trip to Borneo a number of our students took at the end of last year at our Assembly this week. This expedition gave our students the opportunity to live alongside rural communities and work on projects such as helping to build classrooms, community centres, combating deforestation and protecting wildlife. The students also undertook an arduous 4-day trek through the Borneo jungle. Congratulations to the following students who participated and assisted the local communities. I am pleased to announce that we have again chosen to partner with Camps International to offer students in Years 9, 10 and 11 (2020) the opportunity to go on a life-changing expedition to Borneo in December 2021. A Parent and Student Information Session will be held on Thursday 12 March in the Quinn Lecture Theatre at 7.00pm. This follows the Careers Evening that concludes at 6.30pm. I do encourage you to consider this trip which not only provides wonderful experiences, but also assists local communities. Paul Hicks, Headmaster
Middle School Year 7 Camp A very warm welcome home to our Year 7 students and Form Teachers who returned earlier today from a challenging and rewarding camp at Lord Somers on the Mornington Peninsula. It was fantastic to see so many new bonds established from the 64 feeder schools we have in Year 7 this year. The team work and support that the students showed each other throughout the week is a sign of great things to come. The program included initiative exercises, stand up-paddle boarding, kayaking, surf life-saving, hiking, screen printing, pizza making as well as cultural activities giving insight into the environment. The program also included a variety of night-time activities, including sports, movie night, Da Vinci Decathlon and trivia. I hope that the students also developed a deeper sense of connection with their Form Group and our School community. A very sincere thank you to all the Form Teachers and Support Staff who assisted our students through this challenging and rewarding camp.
Alcohol Education Presentation Year 8 students took part in an Alcohol Education Presentation with Xavier Diaz in the Camberwell Room yesterday. The presentation highlighted why it is important that our students are aware of the long and short term risks associated with underage drinking, why some people are tempted to drink under-age and the benefits of adopting and maintaining healthy habits.
Table Tennis Premiership Last week Justin Kwan (7S) courageously aided his Open Table Tennis Team to win the 2020 Premiership. This is an amazing achievement for a student in Year 7. Mr Stephen Smith who has recently returned to the Middle School as a Year 8 Form Teacher is the Team’s coach and we heartily congratulate the team on their efforts through the season and penultimate success.

Parent Teacher Evening Wednesday 11 March I hope that parents are looking forward to the initial catch up with their son’s teachers. The sessions are only five minutes in duration, so I urge parents to review the ‘Progress Checks’ and speak with their sons to consider questions or comments that might help the teachers get to know your son better and help motivate him to learn and build his confidence.
Year 7 Mums’ and Sons’ Breakfast Next Thursday 12 March, we will be hosting the ‘Year 7 Mums and Sons Breakfast’ in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) foyer from 7.00am. The morning will be hosted by MC Orlando Kuti (Year 8) and we will hear from student guest speakers Geoffrey Gong (School Captain) and Edward Hare (Year 8).
Personal Belongings Just a reminder that it is important that all personal belongings are clearly labelled (first name and surname) and kept secure in the student’s lockers when they are unattended. Nearly all labelled lost property is returned to the student.
Absentees and Late Arrival/Early Departure A reminder to please keep the School informed in the case of your son’s absence from School, for any amount of time. With prior notice, students are able to sign themselves in or out from the Middle School Office and there is also a link on the Parent Portal. Alternatively, you can email attendance@cgs.vic.edu.au or mso@cgs.vic.edu.au. If you have not managed to notify the School, please ensure that you report to the Middle School Office and we will collect your son for you. If your son is not feeling well, it is important that he notifies Ms Rhonda Nicholson in the Health Centre, who will monitor your son and notify you if required. Students must not notify you directly, so that we are best able to care for him in a timely fashion. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Autumn Concert Members of the Junior School Orchestra and Junior School Choir are rehearsing in earnest for their performances at the Autumn Concert on Wednesday 25 March at 7.30pm in the PAC Auditorium. Please mark this Concert in your diary. Parents of these students will be notified by the Music School regarding purchase of Concert tickets. Please note that there is no Junior School Soirée this Term. This year, Junior School Soirées will take place once each Semester, on Tuesday 2 June and Thursday 29 October. Each Soirée will be in two parts with PrePrep to Year 3 at 6.00pm and Years 4 and 5 at 7.15pm.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2020 The Junior Library is once again promoting the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge to our Prep to Year 5 students. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development and to encourage reading for relaxation and enjoyment. It is not a competition but a personal challenge to read a set number of books by mid-August 2020. Students from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books, while students from Year 3 to 5 are challenged to read 15 books. All students who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier. A letter with further details will be sent home with students soon. If your son is interested in becoming involved, please email Mrs Maryanne Walker at mhw@cgs.vic.edu.au. Mrs Walker will register students and pass on login details to parents who can then set up their online account to log the number of books read. Page 3

Please let Mrs Walker know by email if your son is participating by Friday March 20. The Challenge will run through until Friday August 21, 2020.
Parking and Drop off/Collection Procedures As we are in the middle of Term, it is timely to remind parents of their continued observance of the parking and drop off/collection procedures. In particular: • Please display your ‘name sign’ on your windscreen or dashboard. It helps us immensely to quickly give you the right student. • Please do not arrive early to collect your son as it congests the flow of traffic. Prep-Year 2 students arrive at 3.00pm; Year 3-5 students arrive after 3.15pm. • Please avoid turning right into Gate 1 from Mont Albert Road. Drop your son a block or two from the School and encourage him to walk, it is a healthy way to start the morning but will also relieve traffic congestion to Kingussie. Just a gentle reminder also, the classes start at 8.40am and all students, Prep to Year 5, should have arrived at School and be ready for the day by that time. Later arrivals make it difficult for the students concerned and the teacher.

Firsts Table Tennis won their sixth AGSV Premiership in a row last Saturday and 19th in 26 years last weekend, defeating Trinity 15-0. Long standing team members Ethan Tang, Nathan Shi (Captain) and Bryden Tan (all Year 12) won six, five and five premierships respectively, having been in the Firsts from Year 7. A remarkable achievement! The Orienteering team had their final meet on Wednesday evening at Canterbury Gardens. Going into the event, the team were leading the competition and, after another strong performance, were crowned champions for the 2019/20 season. Well done to all team members and to the staff involved. While almost everyone will enjoy a long weekend off School Sport, the Cycling squad venture to Casey Fields on Saturday for their second last Criterium for the season. Lawn Bowls are looking to go for backto-back premierships on Saturday 14 March, while the Swimming team are still training hard, preparing for Finals night on Friday 20 March. A rundown of the last events for sports that are continuing to train include: • Cycling Saturday 14 March • Swimming Friday 20 March • Lawn Bowls Saturday 21 March • Kayaking Sunday 22 March • Triathlon Sunday 29 March We had many students participate in the 2020 Victorian Sprint Championships last weekend. A lot of personal bests were recorded. Yanning Zhang (Year 10) had an outstanding meet, winning the 50m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly, coming second in 50m Freestyle and third in 50m Breaststroke. In doing so, he broke two state records (Backstroke and Butterfly). Incredibly, the Butterfly record had previously stood for 17 years by 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, Andrew Lauterstein. Other standout performers included Ric Shen (Year 7) who made 1 final and recorded 4 PBs, William Watson (Year 7) 2 finals and 4 PBs, and Blake Pahos (Year 9) 3 PBs. Many of them will be involved in the 2020 Victorian Metro Long Course Championships this weekend. Last Sunday, Kristian Bite (Year 10) competed in Sports Climbing Australia’s Victorian Lead Titles. In his first ever competition in the sport, Kristian qualified for the finals of his age group and finished a commendable seventh on a particularly challenging wall. With that performance, he may gain the opportunity to compete in the Nationals later in the year. A reminder to all students and parents to attend end of season Presentation Evenings, which are occurring over the next few weeks. Friends of Groups put on a fantastic evening with guest speakers, fun activities and awards. It would be great to see as many students and parents there as possible. Running sessions with Craig Mottram continue to take place throughout the remainder of Term 1 on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The sessions start at 7.00am, meeting on the KAO, and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, as well as speed and endurance. It is a brilliant way to prepare for the Winter Sport season!
Sport Report The Camberwell 1st Table Tennis team faced Trinity on Saturday Looking to secure their sixth consecutive premiership. Camberwell seized an early lead in the first set of singles matches, taking the advantage six rubbers to zero. The reverse singles presented a challenge, particularly to Ethan Tang (Year 7) who was pitted against Trinity’s number one player. He began the rubber down two sets in a best of five, but fought hard and was able to remain composed as he took the next three sets to win the rubber. Page 4

Camberwell continued their run from there, in a convincing 15 rubbers to 0 score-line. Sam Kabourakis, Christian Ling, Bryden Tan, Ethan Tang and Nathan Shi (all year 12) all won their rubbers in their last match for Camberwell. They have set a high standard, and their legacy is one of determination and consistent sportsmanship. The 10B Basketball team rounded out their season with a win against Assumption. Up against a physically stronger side, the team initially struggled to penetrate under the basket. However, some impressive offensive plays, Aden Shinnick and Pavara Jayawardena (both Year 10) managed to knock down a series of shots. Dominant defensive efforts from Fletcher Von Arx (Year 10) saw the team hold onto their 9-0 season record, as they defeated Assumption by 4 points. Needing a win to finish on top of their division, 1st Squash played Mountain District on Saturday. Kai Sapolu (Year 10) had a tight beginning in his singles, losing the golden point in his first set, 15-14 before going down in his next two sets. Captain Arman Cakmakcioglu (Year 12) and Jake Ford (Year 10) were able to make amends, both winning their singles. James Thorn (Year 12) fought hard but Mountain District levelled the match after his singles at two games apiece. Arman and James were then tasked with the deciding game and went on to finish off the match, and their season, in style with a triumphant win. 1st Tennis played Peninsula in their semi-final, looking for a place in the grand-final. With new look doubles combinations working well last week, the day was set for a good contest against the ladder leaders on their home courts. A great start in the doubles by the number one pairing of Isaac Hui (Year 11) and Matthieu Gibert (Year 9) set the scene for a strong Camberwell performance. Unfortunately, a brief lapse in composure from the boys meant Camberwell was 1-3 down after the first round of doubles. Despite some quality tennis by Camberwell, Peninsula managed to extend their lead and Camberwell headed into singles games down 2-6. Isaac continued his excellent season and played his best game of the year to defeat the Peninsula number two player. Lachlan O’Neill (Year 9) overcame a 1-6 deficit to overcome his opposition with persistent pressure and Matthew Lim (Year 12) continued his strong form to set up another win. With 5 matches to be played out, Camberwell had clawed its way back to a 5-6 deficit. Andrew Lee (Year 10) and captain Alex Wilson-Brown (Year 12) both played close games but ultimately lost in tie-breaks as Camberwell finished their season in 4th place. Camberwell’s A and C lawn bowls squads competed in the AGSV semi-finals finishing 2nd and 4th respectively. The A team suffered their first loss against in a tough match against Trinity. An early lead from Trinity allowed the opposition to maintain their advantage despite comeback attempts by Hieu Tran (Year 10), Kristian Bite (Year 10) and William Cook (Year 11). Samuel Chan (Year 8) filled in to join Felix Brown and Tony Chen (both Year 9) in the Camberwell C team’s 12-9 victory against Trinity B. The first week of the Victorian Track and Field Championships were held at Lakeside Stadium over the weekend. Harrison Car (Year 8) competed over 1500m, running a personal best and placing 9th in the state. Lachie McGowan (Year 8) finished 2nd in the U14 Hammer throw. Sebastian Beck (Year 9) continued his fine form placing second in his 100m heats to qualify for the state finals, before running a personal best and national qualifying standard of 11.26 seconds in the final to place 4th. Congratulations on a great summer season and good luck to those still competing in the remaining weeks. Tom Bowers, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
