From the Headmaster House Music We were lucky to witness a wonderful evening of music making and House spirit last night in our PAC. House music is a difficult thing to explain to people from outside our community – its spirit, the camaraderie, the electricity in the air, the generosity of spirit displayed by our students, the quality of the singing – all for a singing and instrumental competition in a boys’ school! It is quite extraordinary. The overall standard of last night’s competition was very even, with few marks separating first from eighth and it is a credit to our student leaders who have worked so hard with their House groups since the beginning of the year to master their program. The work of the arrangers and conductors and accompanists was particularly impressive last night. Congratulations to Steven House for their record-breaking victory on the night, and to all Houses for the way they participated. Many thanks to all House and Music staff for the support that they have given to the students throughout the preparation period. Also, a very special thank you to our Music and Drama Productions Co-ordinator, Ms Jess Doutch who had a massive job in co-ordinating the evening both on the stage and in the preparation. Thanks also to our Heads of House and our House Tutors who have supported the students throughout this journey. Finally, thanks also to our Captain of Music, Aram Cakmakcioglu and the Adjudicator on the evening, Mr Dermot Tutty, a teacher at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School.

Non-Government Schools Annual Census Each year we are required to report on students Residency Status to the Government as part of the NonGovernment Schools Annual Census. We are now required to obtain copies of student Passports and Visas from all students who hold either a Permanent Resident, Bridging or Temporary Visa, or Australian Citizenship for students born overseas who have listed their Nationality as other than Australian. If any of these apply to your son, could you please email copies of your son’s Passport and Visa or Australian Citizenship to our Head of Administrative Services, Ms Michelle Perna at sro@cgs.vic.edu.au as soon as possible.

Gate Three and the School Driveway Our main driveway is unavoidably a shared space for cars and pedestrians. Please take every care to guard the safety of our students as you make your way down to our carpark beneath the Sports Centre. The smiley face at the top of the driveway is a helpful indicator of safe speed – please ‘win a smile’ as you drive down the driveway! Paul Hicks, Headmaster

This week our Year 8 students were privileged to hear first-hand accounts from Holocaust survivors from ‘Courage to Care’. The stories illustrated how their survival was only possible through the courageous acts of strangers throughout the period of WWII. The volunteers were most complimentary of our students, for the mature and respectful manner that they conducted themselves during the workshops. This is now the third year that the organisation has visited CGS, and the visit serves the additional purpose of consolidating student’s foundational knowledge for the study of John Boyne’s novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Year 7 Information Evening It was wonderful to see so many parents at our Year 7 Information Evening on Wednesday in the Middleton Theatre. The night comprised of a basic introduction to Schoology, an introduction to the Monash University Sleep Study, followed by Year 7 Camp Information and Parent Networking Drinks. Thanks to all who attended to make it such an enjoyable night. If you are interested in finding out more about the Sleep Study or signing up, please follow this link https://classstudymonash.weebly.com.

Year 7 Camp, 2 - 6 March Year 7 will be venturing to Lord Somers next Monday, for the Annual Year 7 Camp. The Camp has been placed in the middle of the Term to afford the students a well-earned break from their freshly established routines, as well as presenting further opportunities for them to create and strengthen bonds within their cohort. We wish staff and students a safe, fun and fulfilling week at Somers. The students will meet in Form Rooms on Monday morning before making their way to the buses. We will aim to return on Friday by 3.25pm. A more precise arrival time will be posted on Friday afternoon through Twitter @CGSCamps. Please contact Ms Kirsty McDougall with any queries at kem@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Summer Sport With the majority of Summer Sport completed, I commend all students for their efforts amid the whirlwind start to the School year. I hope that they have connected with new mates, developed new skills and are excited to return next season. On behalf of the students I thank the parents, coaches, Mr Lachlan Crawford and Ms Sally White for their invaluable support throughout the season. The students are very lucky to utilize first class facilities and we thank those responsible for their maintenance and preparation. Our focus in Sport now turns to swimming and we wish the students the very best in their meet tonight here at School. A special mention to Year 7 student Justin Kwan (7S), who will play in the AGSV Firsts Table Tennis Grand Final against Trinity at Home in the CGS Sports Centre, starting tomorrow at 12.30pm. We wish the team the very best in their matches.

Outdoor Education Year 8 students concluded Round 1 of the Outdoor Education program today with the full-day program at various locations. It was pleasing to see all students embrace the new challenges that they were provided with. Activities included: • Horse Riding - Templestowe • Kayaking - Wonga Park • Off Road Biking - You Yangs Regional Park. • Rock Climbing - You Yangs Regional Park. • Rock Climbing - Brisbane Range National Park. • Rowing - Yarra River • Sailing - Albert Park A huge thank you to our Director of Co-Curricular Activities, Ms Kirsty McDougall for organising multiple camps and outdoor programs that provide such a critical avenue to stretch our students’ comfort zones. Thank you also to all of the Staff who assisted in the facilitation of these activities for our students. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Years 4 and 5 Parent Information/Cyber Safety Presentation As helpful and powerful as Information Technology might be, in the hands of our students, it does come with some inherent risks of misuse, overuse and misadventure. To have parents well informed and confident to provide a safe home environment and responsible use of technology, we have planned a Parent Information/ Cyber Safety Presentation and Discussion led by our Head of ICT Innovations and Learning, Mrs Jenny Luca. This parents only Cyber Safety Presentation will occur next Thursday 5 March from 6.45pm to 8.00pm in the Middleton Theatre. Please note that it is strongly encouraged for at least one parent from each Year 4 and 5 family to avail themselves of this important opportunity.

2020 South Yarra District Swimming Championships On Wednesday 26 February, fourteen Junior and Middle School students travelled to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) to compete in the 2020 South Yarra Schools District Swimming Championships. Congratulations to the entire team who finished in fourth place overall in the Boys Schools Division. Special mention and congratulations go to our Butterfly stars Isaac Khoo (Year 4) and Melvin Zhang (Year 6) who qualified for the Beachside Divisional Championships, which are being held on Friday 6 March at the Oakleigh Pool.

Water Safety Week Next week for swimming there will be water safety lessons for all classes. Students will be taught about water safety to keep themselves and others safe in a range of aquatic environments through engaging practical activities. Students will be notified what they need to bring for the lesson.

Sport

The AGSV Summer Season comes to a close this weekend for most sports and teams. Thank you to everyone involved in making it another fantastic season, especially to all Year 12s for whom it is their final Summer Season for the School. While the majority of students finish this weekend, some sports continue as normal. Final events for those sports occur as per below and will train until then: • Orienteering Wednesday 4 March • Cycling Saturday 14 March • Swimming Friday 20 March • Lawn Bowls Saturday 21 March • Kayaking Sunday 22 March The Camberwell Swimming Championships take place on Friday afternoon. Besides the AGSV Finals, it is one of the big events on the calendar for the squad, as they have the chance to win the Golden Goggles! Good luck to Firsts Table Tennis who play their grand final on Saturday against Trinity. Their match starts from 12.00 noon on Level 4 of the Sports Centre. Hopefully they can cap off another stellar season and send off long-standing members and Year 12s Nathan Shi, Ethan Tang and Bryden Tan, as well as George Kabourakis, in style. Firsts Tennis are making their way down the coast to play their semi-final on Saturday against Peninsula. We wish them every success as they push for a spot in the grand final. End of season Presentation Evenings have been organised by their respective Friends of Groups. It would be fantastic to see as many students and parents there as possible. They’re always enjoyable evenings, a great way to reflect on the season and reward outstanding performances. Winter Sport trials for a variety of teams will commence in the coming weeks in preparation for the beginning of the AGSV Winter Sport season in Term 2. Details have been published to students on Schoology. Running sessions with Craig Mottram continue to take place throughout the remainder of Term 1 on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The sessions start at 7.00am, meeting on the KAO, and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, as well as speed and endurance. It is a brilliant way to prepare for the Winter Sport season! Notifications of Sport cancellations due to weather are posted on Twitter @CamberwellSport and TeamApp camberwellgrammarsport.teamapp.com. More information about the Sport Program can also be found on TeamApp which can also be downloaded from the App Store. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Sport Report Looking to end their season on a high note after narrowly missing out on a finals appearance, the 1st V Basketball team faced Yarra Valley last Friday. With an explosive start from Taran Laurence (Year 12), and relentless efforts from Ellis Biggar and Matthew Power (both Year 12) at the rim, the team began with great intensity. Leading by a narrow margin, Charlie Amling and Ollie Spalding (both Year 12) pressured turnovers as Camberwell began to cement their lead heading into the second half. As Sam Veitch (Year 10) found his form from the three-point arc and Liam Thomas (Year 11) worked to break down Yarra Valley’s defence, Camberwell extended their lead to win 70 to 59 in front of a large crowd. In a closer affair, Camberwell’s 2nd Blue Basketball faced PEGS. The team was quick to establish themselves on the scoreboard, with Matt Bryson nailing consecutive jump shots and Ben Hindhaugh (both Year 12) slipping through defenders to finish strongly at the basket. As the clock counted down to just a minute remaining, and with scores level, Will Day (Year 12) was passed the ball but was quickly buried in opponents, denying him the easy shot. Straying from their set play, he passed the ball out to Ruben Hopkins (Year 12), who sat unmanned at the three-point arc. Positioned just off the baseline, Hopkins knocked down the three to set Camberwell ahead. With just six seconds remaining, as the clock ticked down, we managed to seize the victory, 30 to 27. Needing a win to keep their finals aspirations alive, the First XI cricket team were looking to make amends after last week’s loss against Marcellin. Bowling first in perfect conditions on the KAO, Camberwell struggled to contain the early flow of runs. The first wicket fell to Connor Laird (Year 10) thanks to a catch by Lachlan Ross (Year 7). Spinners, Ned Bennett and Lachlan Ross (Year 12) were then able to pull the momentum Page 3

back with a few tight overs of bowling. With another two wickets falling in quick succession thanks to Bennett and Ross, Yarra Valley stood at 4/100. Strike bowler Connor Laird was then brought back into the attack with immediate effect. During the next 5 overs, he managed to take another 5 wickets, all bowled, to have Yarra Valley struggling at 9/122 after 37 overs. Lewis Winkett (Year 12) took the final wicket with only his second ball to help bowl Yarra Valley out for 122. With Camberwell at the crease, Jordan McCleery (Year 11) joined opener Josh Pollocks (Year 12) and the pair were able to put together a steadying partnership of 45 runs. McCleery continued scoring at a fast rate, getting to 43 off only 41 balls but unfortunately was eventually caught behind. Lachlan Ross fought hard for 8 runs before losing his wicket with Camberwell still requiring another 49 runs to win. Mitch Horn (Year 10) and Will Stamper (Year 9) had the responsibility of ensuring a win. They batted conservatively at first, but both were able to adjust to the pace of the wicket and wait for balls in their scoring zones. Horn and Stamper combined for an unbeaten partnership of 49 runs to complete a comprehensive win by 6 wickets. Unfortunately, Peninsula were unable to defeat Assumption, leaving Camberwell in 5th place on the premiership ladder. Camberwell 1st Tennis played for a spot in the semi-finals in Saturday’s game against Yarra Valley. The opening doubles matches went quickly in Camberwell’s favour as they established a strong 3-1 lead. New pairings of Matthieu Gibert (Year 9) /Isaac Hui (Year 11), and Ashwin Prabaharan (Year 10)/David Maes (Year 12) both had good wins, attacking at the net and placing their opponents under pressure on every point. After a first set lacking in energy and intensity, Andrew Lee (Year 10) and Lachlan O’Neill (Year 9) reversed their performance and recorded a strong 8-2 win. The remainder of the teams all won to finish the doubles sets with a 7-1 lead. The singles started strongly with Andrew Lee playing with more power to outclass his opponent. Lachlan O’Neill’s consistency has improved all season and he made quick work of his opponent, with an all court game that proved too strong. With a win secured, the remainder of the boys were under less pressure - and tellingly won the three tie-breaks they contested. Backed up by Matthew Lim (Year 12), who saved a number of match points. Matthieu Gibert and captain Alex Wilson-Brown (Year 12) also won hard fought tie-breaks against worthy opponents. Their win secures a semi-final place against ladder leaders Peninsula. In their final hit-out before next week’s finals, Camberwell’s First Table Tennis played in a focussed manner to defeat Ivanhoe in 14 rubber, 44 games to 1 rubber, 6 games. Joshua Hui (Year 9) adapted his game after dropping the first set to bounce back and win the rubber, in 3 games to 1. The team look to continue their historically presiding run, as they play Trinity in the grand final on Saturday, going for our 19th Premiership in 26 years. After celebrating the Centenary Round of the Summer AGSV season on the 8th of February, the Centenary flag has arrived at Camberwell for its 3rd stopover before it is passed on to Marcellin on the 17th of March. Best of luck to First Tennis in their semi-final this Saturday, First Table Tennis in their Grand Final, as well as all those competing in the final round of the Summer Season.  Tom Bowers, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Music Students’ Recitals Throughout the year, the Music School runs a series of Music Students’ Recitals. They are aimed at providing valuable performance experience, in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, for instrumental students in the Middle and Senior Schools. As of next week, students will be able to register for the Term 1 recital which is to be held in Week 8 on Thursday 19 March at 7.30pm. To do this, students who learn their instrument at School will need to speak to their instrumental teacher, who can add their name and performance information to the sign-up list. For students who learn outside of School, this attached form should be completed, signed by their teacher and returned to the Music Office no later than Friday 6 March. Please note, if a member of the Music Staff is requested as an accompanist, the music for that accompaniment must be provided at the time of registration. The aim is for these recitals to run no longer than 90 minutes. Once this time limit has been reached, the recital will be closed until next Term. Greg Roberts, Head of Keyboard

A Career in Policing: Quick Facts about Applying There is a perception that young adults do not have enough life and work experience to join the Police Force, but students are eligible to apply once they are 18 years old. Recruitment staff and psychologists will assess applicants to determine their suitability for the policing environment at each of the 11 stages of the recruitment process. When asked about previous work experience, answers may include customer service, exposure to conflict resolution, teamwork, leadership and emotional intelligence. Part-time and casual work is often highly regarded, however, if a student is only working 5 hours per week, they may not yet be able to demonstrate the skills required for a Police role. For further information, students are recommended to browse the Police Career website.
