Welcome Back

Collection of Data on Students with a Disability

It is great to be back at school after sabbatical leave. My wife and I had a wonderful time away, and I am very grateful to the Council for their encouragement and support, but it is now good to be home and back at School. I am very grateful to the staff and especially to Mr Rob French for taking on the role of Acting Headmaster while I was away. Unfortunately, it has been a fairly sombre start to the term, given that our colleague and friend, Mark Williams passed away during the holidays. Mark worked at Camberwell Grammar School for over 20 years, and for many of those was Head of Clifford House. He mentored and counselled thousands of students over his career, and was also an inspirational IT teacher. Mark’s courage in the face of his protracted illness was inspirational, and it was very moving to me that he chose to spend as much time as possible over his final months at School. He loved this place, and he loved the students in particular, and had a vision of us as a very special community. He wanted to be here whenever he could, and attended even on the last day of term, just a few days before finally being admitted to hospital. We will do our best to live up to his vision of us, and we will miss him dearly. Following so closely the death of another wonderful teacher, Ms Suzan Davies, it has been a tough year. Thank you to all who have offered support in these difficult times. Mark’s funeral, for family and close friends will take place on Friday afternoon at St Mark’s Church. A celebration service for the school community and for students and parents past and present will take place in the Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday afternoon, commencing at 2.30pm. All are welcome.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with a Disability We are required by the Federal Government to provide data on students with a disability, and this data will be sent in very soon. The NCCD process requires us to identify information about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Every school must participate in this count, although we do not provide names of individual students. In the end, the figures are used to determine the level of disability funding we receive. A letter from the NCCD providing more information is attached to this Bulletin.

Snowsports – Camberwell Cup The Camberwell Cup was held over the last weekend of the school holidays. Students were able to receive professional race coaching and then compete, along with parents and siblings, on a giant slalom race course. The Baker family were awarded the fastest family, and Declan Woolf (Year 12) was the fastest snowboarder. The 2019 Camberwell Cup was won by Benjamin Svikis (Year 11). Congratulations to all who took part in this event.

Australian Scout Medallion Page 1

Congratulations to Jonathan Pettolino (Year 9) who has been awarded the Australian Scout Medallion. Only a very small number of Scouts ever achieve this award, which represents the top award in each of the five sections on Scouting. It requires years of self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. Well done, Jonathan.

The CGS Year 10 team of Ilian Aendenroomer, Aidan Harris, Andrew Ho, Jack Hu, Isaac Hui, James Stambe, Ethan To and Wilson Zhu performed well through the course of the 10 challenges. The team came second in Code Breaking and third in Science which are laudable achievements in this very competitive competition. I presented the team with their certificates at our Assembly on Thursday.

Semester 1 Certificates of Academic Excellence I was pleased to present the following students with Certificates of Academic Excellence at our Assembly on Thursday. Scholars of the School At the start of the year, we recognised students who excelled in their Semester 2 subjects last year, with current Year 12 students, who performed very well across all their Year 11 subjects, being recognised as Scholars of the School. Each year we consider the Year 12 mid-year results to see if there are other students who have achieved equally well in the first semester of their final year, and who merit inclusion in this group. Rubik’s Cube World Championship Competition Over the school holidays some CGS boys participated in the Rubik’s Cube World Championship Competition 2019. The competition had around 900 competitors from 52 countries. The world’s top cubers raced for the fastest time to solve many types of puzzles. Congratulations to Darby Lee (Year 9) who won third prize in the Australian Nationals Clock Puzzle Event. Well done also to Michael Alexander, Darby Lee, Ming Han Low (all Year 9) and Ming Jin Low (Year 11) who also participated in the competition. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle School

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope that you enjoyed some valuable time together as a family over the break. Term 3 is always a rewarding and very busy term, where the boys’ independence and organisation will be even more important.

UK Cricket Tour Congratulations to the 18 boys who were fortunate enough to travel to the UK on a Cricket Tour during the school break. The boys are to be commended for the way that they represented the School and their country over the two-week period. All 18 players improved their cricket, and more importantly gained valuable life skills, whilst establishing life-long memories with their mates.

Expression of Interest – Galápagos and Amazon Tour, September 2020 After a very successful first tour in 2018, we are delighted to be proposing a School Tour to Galápagos Islands and The Amazon in September 2020 and are looking to gauge interest in this tour. This event will appeal to students with an interest in the biological sciences and natural history. The Galápagos Islands feature highly on travellers’ top places to visit during their lifetime, and with good reason. Located 1000 km off the western coast of South America, this remote archipelago hosts an amazing array of animal and plant life that attracts all people with an interest in natural history. The islands are home to some of the most unique animals in the world, many of which are not found anywhere else on the planet. Because they have not been hunted, these animals have a legendary lack of fear towards humans, making this a wonderful place to appreciate fauna up close. This remote archipelago is a land of stark volcanic formations, cactus forests, lush green highlands, turquoise bays and tropical beaches. Galápagos also hosts a rich underwater world to explore, teeming with abundant and varied aquatic life. Additionally, we will travel to a section of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest for a three day/two night experience based at the Inkaterra Guides Field Station. This is truly an incredible opportunity for boys with an interest in the natural world and scientific discovery to embark on a journey of a lifetime that will reap benefits far beyond the usual curriculum. The touring party is led by three experienced educators and tour leaders: Mr Marcus Jones, Mr Roger Devine and Mr Howard Kelly (organiser). Please complete the attached Expression of Interest slip and have your son return it to Mr Marcus Jones by 31 July 2019. Click here for a proposed itinerary.

Blokes’ Book Breakfast The annual Blokes’ Book Breakfast will take place on Wednesday 21 August from 7.00am to 8.30am in the Rose Reading Room (upstairs in the Weickhardt Library). The guest speaker will be Mr Michael Gerard Bauer. Library Staff invite Middle and Senior School boys and their fathers to join them for a delicious cooked breakfast and to learn about following ones dreams, writing, the value of reading, and the inspiration behind Mr Bauer’s books. Mr Bauer is an internationally acclaimed author whose books include the highly acclaimed The Running Man and Don’t Call Me Ishmael! which was short-listed in both the CBCA awards and the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards among several other awards. See this attached flyer for more information. To book tickets please go to: www.trybooking.com/BECVD For any enquiries email: circulation@cgs.vic.edu.au Catherine Casey, Head of Library and Information Services

Friday Activities Activities recommenced today and will continue for the first five weeks of this Term. Year 8 will recommence their Outdoor Education schedule in Week 6 for three weeks, whilst the remainder of the Middle School will revert to House Sport. Page 3

Friday Finishing Times in Term 3 Boys will finish their Friday Activities at 4.00pm with the exception of those involved in Indoor Cricket who will return to School by 4.30pm. The last day of Term 3 is on Friday 13 September, 2019, finishing at 3.10pm.

AGSV Winter Sport Round 7 After a lengthy break, Saturday Sport will recommence tomorrow. Please ensure that you provide enough time in communicating absence due to injury or illness, so that replacement players can be arranged. Team sports are an invaluable element of School life at CGS and it is important to contribute to our full ability. Great culture relies on living our School values in all that we do. Sport is one of many avenues to exercise learning, respect, integrity, courage and optimism.

Congratulations The following boys were members of the successful U13 Victorian Team who claimed first place at the National State Hockey Championships during the holidays: • Will Aldred (Year 7) • Will Watson (Year 6) • Domenic Bozzone (Year 7)

Year 6 All Schools Boys Round Robin Best of luck to our Year 6 boys who will represent Camberwell Grammar School at PEGS next Tuesday.

Tassie Trek and Cadet Trial Information Night (Year 8 Only) On Wednesday, Tom Cooper (Year 9) spoke to our Year 8 boys about his fulfilling experiences on the Tassie Trek in 2018. We will be hosting an Information night for interested boys and parents in Week 6 on Tuesday 20 August, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm regarding the 54th consecutive Tassie Trek (in December) and an opportunity to trial Cadets (in September). More information will be provided at a later date. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School

Welcome back to Second Semester. I trust that the holiday break provided time for some respite from the winter ills and a chance to re-energise and prepare for the Term ahead. The boys have grown considerably in many ways over the course of the year, and this halfway point provides an ideal opportunity to look back at what has been achieved, as well as to look forward with the intention of making the most of the opportunities ahead. Congratulations again to our boys for the absolutely delightful production of The Amazing Adventures of Superstan. Through the rehearsals and practice sessions, the boys learnt many valuable lessons and grew in stature and confidence, as well as learning many skills and stagecraft competencies. I am sure you have taken time to read your son’s report and have discussed it with him; what he did well as well as areas that deserve greater attention. The Parent/Teacher interviews, to be conducted next week will provide an opportunity for clarification and collaboration. Term 3 includes some wonderful events including Book Week, the School Concert, Athletics Trials, Poem in Your Pocket, as well as class excursions and incursions, and, of course, Parent/ Teacher conferences.

Parent/Teacher Conferences The conferences will be held next week on Wednesday 24 July, 3.40pm to 9.00pm and Thursday 25 July, 3.40pm to 6.00pm. To keep boys and siblings safe we request they are adequately supervised during interview times. Please note, due to government regulations, boys who are not booked into Aftercare cannot join this group in outside play. As the library is used for interviews it is also unavailable. Please contact Mrs Diane Collins on 0418 141 613 or email dmc@cgs.vic.edu.au if you have any difficulty attending your nominated interviews. Diane Collins, Deputy Head Administration, Junior School

Parent Information Session - Emotional Intelligence Parents of boys in Prep to Year 5 are invited to attend an Information Session on Tuesday 30 July in the Camberwell Room, 8.50am to 10.20am. Mrs Maryanne Kapoulitsas, Emotional Intelligence Schools Consultant from Swinburne, Mrs Caroline Gatley Deputy Head, Curriculum and Mr Tristen Haines, Year 4 Class Teacher, will be giving a talk on Emotional Intelligence. This presentation is geared to helping parents understand the importance of this program and provide strategies and understandings that can be implemented at home. We will present information about what is emotional intelligence, the research behind the program, elements of the classroom program and the connection between home and school. Caroline Gatley, Deputy Head Curriculum, Junior School

Junior Library - Book Week is Coming! A highlight each year at Norge Junior School is the celebration of children’s literature inspired by the CBCA National Book Week. Book Week is recognised across the country and brings together children, libraries, authors and illustrators, showcasing the importance, benefits and joy of reading for all ages. This year’s theme is ‘Reading is my Secret Power’. Chess Championships Congratulations to Lachlan Lee (Year 5) for winning the Under 14 Open Division at the 2019 Victorian Junior Chess Championships held at Glen Waverley Secondary College over the school holidays. Sport

Winter Sport training has recommenced and matches take place this weekend. Students should be aware of their match times which can be accessed through the Parent Portal. There are three weekends of Winter Sport remaining. Thereafter, end of season presentation nights will occur and Winter Colours will be advertised. The Spring Sport season, involving Athletics and Water Polo, commences in Week 4. Although optional, students are highly encouraged to participate in the Spring programs. Thank you to those parents who submitted change of Summer Sport preference forms. Students will be notified in the coming weeks about their change of sport in preparation for the season. Summer Sport preseason training and trials will be held for some teams later in the Term. Information will be distributed through Schoology and the Bulletin with the specific details. Tom Bowers (Year 11) has continued his outstanding running form by placing first in the Under 18 10km Road Race in Round 6 of Athletics Victoria’s XCR series last weekend. He did it in a blistering 32:29.14, which holds him in good stead for the remainder of the Cross Country season and for the upcoming Athletics season. Congratulations also to Julian Lim (Year 7) who competed in the National Fencing Championships in Sydney in the Under 15 and Under 17 Men’s Foil over the holidays. Julian was crowned the Under 15 National Champion, while he finished in the top 16 in the Under 17 division. He was also a member of the Victorian team who won the Under 15 Foil Teams event. An exceptional effort! If you have any concerns or questions regarding Sport, contact the staff member in charge of your son’s team or contact the Director of Sport at dos@cgs.vic.edu.au. Junior Library - Book Week is Coming!

Christmas Puddings - We need your help! Mixing Days The Christmas Pudding preparation has well and truly begun. A big thank you to all who have helped chop, zest and weigh so far. Our mixing and cooking days are now in sight! This part of the process requires ‘many hands to make light work’ and to make it easy the two-hour Friday morning mixing sessions have been divided into year levels. Absolutely no baking skills are required, and even if you can only spare an hour it is very much appreciated. If you cannot make your year levels allocated day, feel free to jump into one of the others, everyone is welcome to any or all sessions! These sessions are a great opportunity to meet and chat with other parents. There has been a lot of laughs and stories shared already! If you have time stay after the preparation is done for a cuppa and some morning tea. Please visit www.volunteersignup.org/9EPC7 to let us know that you would like to join in and be part of this fantastic CGS tradition which raises significant funds for the School and spreads a bit of cheer through our community every Christmas. Cooking Days The Auxiliary are also looking for volunteers to help with the pudding cooking which we do over the weekend following each mixing day using the CGS Camberwell Room Kitchen ovens. It only takes fifteen minutes of your time to unload a batch and load in the next and if we have plenty of helpers it lightens our load. Detailed instructions and a demonstration will be given. For any queries please contact thecgsauxiliary@gmail.com.
