Edition 68, 25 October 2019

Year 12 Final Day We said farewell to our Year 12 students last Wednesday with a series of House farewells, cuff-link presentations by fathers of Year 12 students who were also Old Boys of the Grammarians’ Association in the morning, and a lunch. The day finished with a Leavers’ Service at St Mark’s Church and a Valedictory Dinner in the evening at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with parents and staff. It was a day filled with a mix of emotions, excitement and memories and it was wonderful to celebrate the conclusion of their formal schooling at CGS with them. I am sure that the whole school community will join with me to thank them for their contributions to CGS and to wish them well in their final examinations. Many thanks to Ms Jan Sangster, Mr David Rayner, Mr Marcus Jones and the parents who set up the tables for the evening. Congratulations and thanks to Mr Brian McManus for his extraordinary work on the Year 12 video.

Another AGSV Summer season is underway and it was pleasing to see our students giving their all and with such great spirit. Highlights of the round included First Volleyball’s 5-set win against reigning premiers Mentone and 8A Basketball’s 1-point win over Trinity. First Volleyball has a bye this weekend; however, Basketball, Cricket and Tennis First teams will be playing Mentone for their first home matches. Basketball play this afternoon at 5.00pm in the Sports Centre. Friends of Basketball are hosting a BBQ from 4.00pm and the School’s marching band will be on show during the match, so hopefully many have come along to support the team. Firsts Cricket and Tennis play on the KAO and at Deepdene, respectively, on Saturday. Good luck to all teams this weekend. Congratulations to Domenic Bozzone (Year 7) and William Watson (Year 6) for their selection in the U13 Boys Indoor Hockey team. Brodie Carswell (Year 9) has been selected as a reserve with the U15 team, while Old Boy, James Shrimpton was selected in the Open Men’s team. Some students recently competed in the All Schools Bench Press Competition. In an outstanding achievement, Dylan Kitchener (Year 11) broke the national record for his weight division. Sessions with Craig Mottram, the former Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete, continue throughout Term 4 on Wednesday mornings from 6.45am on the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO). It is a fantastic opportunity to develop aerobic fitness, resilience, mobility and core training, as well as strength and conditioning. The change of Winter Sport Preference Week takes place next week (Week 4). Students wishing to change their Winter Sport for 2020 should have their parents complete the online form, which parents will receive a hyperlink for through email. Submissions will close on Friday 1 November. Due to the Melbourne Cup long weekend, only Firsts teams and selected sports will train next week (Week 4). Students are encouraged to check with the staff member in charge of their team to confirm training times. No matches are scheduled on the long weekend and training will resume as normal from Wednesday 6 November. For clarification or for more information, any questions or concerns regarding Sport can be directed to me at ljc@cgs.vic.edu.au. Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Carol Choir Mr Ben Bishop is looking for eight more boys to join the Carol Choir who will perform at St Pauls’ in December. Please contact Ms Alex O’Brien at moa@cgs.vic.edu.au if you are interested.
