From the Headmaster PTV Student ID (PASSI) Cards The Department of Transport have made important changes to the rules related to the expiry date of PTV Approved School Student ID (PASSI) cards. Until now, they required an expiry date being the last day of February (not exceeding the year after a student finished Year 12). PASSI cards will now be accepted when buying a Student Pass if the ID is valid on the day of purchase. The ID card does not need to be valid for the duration of the pass being bought. Therefore, please ensure that there is no gap between your son’s PASSI ID card expiring and him receiving a new card. Any gap would expose your son to the risk of being fined for travelling without valid ID. Also, it is your son’s responsibility to ensure that he carries a valid PASSI card or PTV ID as proof of concession entitlement when travelling with a Student Pass, or he risks receiving a fine from an Authorised Officer. Further information can be found at ptv.vic.gov.au.

Middle School Year 7 Mums and Sons Breakfast We had an impressive turn out to the Annual Year 7 Mums and Sons Breakfast yesterday. In keeping with tradition, School Captain Geoffrey Gong and Year 8 student Edward Hare shared some excellent memories of their time in Year 7 and passed on some wise advice to both the students and parents present. The morning was hosted by MC Orlando Kuti (Year 8) who did a very professional job. The breakfast acted as a reminder of some of the little things that we too often take for granted.

Congratulations It is always wonderful to hear of the achievements that our students are making outside of School. Please continue to keep your Form Teacher abreast of this information. Last weekend the second week of the Victorian Track and Field Championships were held at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve. There were three stand out performances by Middle School students: • Harrison Car (Year 8C) competed in the 800m and finished 9th in the final. Harrison set a personal best time of 2:16.54 in the heats. Last week, Harrison also finished 9th in the final of the 1500m, again running a personal best time. • Zac Matters (Year 8J) competed in the 3000m Walk and finished in 2nd place - a great achievement in a challenging event. • Lachie McGowan (Year 8K) finished 2nd in the U14 Hammer throw last weekend with a distance of 37.62m. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

Junior School Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2020 Prep to Year 5 students are encouraged to participate in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development and to encourage reading for relaxation and enjoyment. It is not a competition but a personal challenge to read a set number of books by mid-August 2020. Students from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books, while students from Year 3 to 5 are challenged to read 15 books. All students who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier. If your son is interested in becoming involved, please email Mrs Maryanne Walker at mhw@cgs.vic.edu.au by Friday 20 March. Mrs Walker will register students and pass on login details to parents who can then set up their online account to log the number of books read. The Challenge will run through until Friday 21 August, 2020. Howard Kelly, Head of Junior School

Sport

The Cycling squad have their final event of the season this weekend at Victoria University in Hoppers Crossing. As Tom Bowers has mentioned in his report below, all things going well, we should have a few place getters across the squad in what has been another successful season. Two Lawn Bowls teams will feature in the semi-finals early on Saturday morning, with the grand final to follow. We are going for backto-back premierships! Tom’s report contains more details of the results from the Victorian Track and Field Championships; however, he himself ran in the Under 18 5000m and placed a commendable 5th place. He continues to go from strength to strength with his running and is a fine example to other students what hard work and dedication can achieve. Congratulations to Derrick Kwon for winning a gold medal in the Yellow Belt category at the 2020 Victoria Taekwondo competition on Sunday 8 March. Running sessions with Craig Mottram continue to take place throughout the remainder of Term 1 on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The sessions start at 7.00am, meeting on the KAO, and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, as well as speed and endurance. It is a brilliant way to prepare for the Winter Sport season! Page 2

Sport Report Whilst the AGSV Summer season has concluded, Camberwell’s cycling squad competed at Casey Fields as part of the Victorian Interschool Cycling Series in their penultimate round. With thrilling tactics on display, the races were close across all levels. In the Senior A race, Zac Kelly (Year 11) placed 3rd and Logan Taplin (Year 10) in 5th. Zac currently holds a comfortable lead in the Senior A grade as he looks to take the series win for the second year in a row. Alex Guorgi (Year 11) won the Senior C race and is on track for a series podium finish. In another huge win, Luke Ryan (Year 10) led the Senior D race as he looks for another podium finish for the series. In the Junior C Grade, Jason Li (Year 8) worked his way through the field to place 3rd in his race. The squad look towards the last round of competition next week to finalise their series rankings. Week 2 of the Victorian Track and Field Championships was held at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve over the weekend. Sebastian Beck (Year 9) ran in the 200m with a time of 23.67 to finish 3rd, and Sebastian now holds national qualifying performances across both 100m and 200m. Harrison Car (Year 8) ran a personal best of 2:16 in his heats to place 3rd, before finishing 9th in the finals. Zac Matters (Year 8) competed in the 3000m walk and placed 2nd, which qualifies Zac to compete at the Australian Athletics Championships later this month. After a long season, the Orienteering team were victorious in the 2019/20 season against Scotch College and Trinity Grammar. The team excelled in their final round last Wednesday, with Luke Burton winning the B Grade division and Henry Shirrefs also winning his division. In the C division, Ben Price was victorious and in the D division, Matthew Rodier took out the win followed by Ken Weeraratne in 3rd place. Across the board, the team’s efforts combined to convincingly win the series. Tom Bowers, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
