ian thinking threatens the unity of God, however, and that this new view of God does not require a ‘social’ component. Expanding on the work of such theologians as Barth and Rahner, who insisted that there was only one mind of God, Ward offers a coherent, wholly monotheistic interpretation of the Trinity. Christ and the Cosmos analyses theistic belief in a scientific context, demonstrating the necessity of cosmology to theological thinking that is often overly myopic and anthropomorphic. This important volume will benefit those who seek to understand what the Trinity is, why it matters, and how it fits into a scientific account of the universe.

THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO CHRISTIAN PolITICAl THeology
Interest in political theology has surged in recent years, and this accessible volume provides a focused overview of the field. Many are asking serious questions about religious faith in secular societies, the origin and function of democratic polities, worldwide economic challenges, the shift of Christianity’s center of gravity to the global south, and anxieties related to bold and even violent assertions of theologically determined political ideas. In fourteen original essays, authors examine Christian political theology in order to clarify the contemporary discourse and some of its most important themes and issues. These include up-to-date, critical engagements with historical figures like Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Immanuel Kant; discussions of how the Bible functions theopolitically; and introductions to key movements such as liberation theology, Catholic social teaching, and radical orthodoxy. An invaluable resource for students and scholars in theology, the Companion will also be beneficial to those in history, philosophy, and politics.

AN INTRODUCTION TO
an introduction to
This introduction provides a comprehensive overview of the development of Catholic ethics in the wake of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), an event widely considered crucial to the reconciliation of the Catholic Church and the modern world. Andrew Kim investigates Catholic responses to questions of moral theology in all four principal areas: Catholic social teaching, natural law, virtue ethics, and bioethics. In addition to discussing contemporary controversies surrounding abortion, contraception, labor rights, exploitation of the poor, and just war theory, he explores the historical sources of the Catholic worldview. Beginning with the moral vision revealed through the person of Jesus Christ and continuing with elaborations on this vision from figures such as Augustine and Aquinas, this volume elucidates the continuity of the Catholic moral tradition. Its balance of complexity and accessibility makes it an ideal resource for both students of theology and general readers. Andrew Kim is Assistant Professor

As a committed monotheist, I argue against the social doctrine, and for a different account of the Trinity, using more recent philosophical ideas, which is (I think) coherent, fairly easy to expound, fully reasonable, and spiritually fruitful.
James A. Diamond Author of Maimonides and the Shaping of the Jewish Canon A lifetime of struggling with Jewish texts of all genres led me to this book. There are two crucial ideas I hope my readers take away with them. One is Maimonides’ legitimate place in the foundational canon of Jewish thought alongside the Hebrew Bible, the classical rabbinic corpus, and the Zohar. The other is that theological and philosophical thought cannot be “Jewish” without some serious engagement with that canon.

Selected Discourses of Shenoute the Great Community, Theology, and Social Conflict in Late Antique Egypt Edited and translated by David Brakke Ohio State University
and Andrew Crislip Virginia Commonwealth University
Shenoute the Great (c.347–465) led one of the largest Christian monastic communities in late antique Egypt and was the greatest native writer of Coptic in history. For approximately eight decades, Shenoute led a federation of three monasteries and emerged as a Christian leader. His public sermons attracted crowds of clergy, monks, and lay people; he advised military and government officials; he worked to ensure that his followers would be faithful to orthodox Christian teaching; and he vigorously and violently opposed paganism and the oppressive treatment of the poor by the rich. This volume presents in translation a selection of his sermons and other orations. These works grant us access to the theology, rhetoric, moral teachings, spirituality, and social agenda of a powerful Christian leader during a period of great religious and social change in the later Roman Empire. 2015 228 x 152 mm 338pp 7 b/w illus. 2 maps 978-1-107-02256-0 Hardback £64.99 / US$110.00

Constantine, Divine Emperor of the Christian Golden Age Jonathan Bardill
Constantine, Divine Emperor of the Christian Golden Age offers a radical reassessment of Constantine as an emperor, a pagan and a Christian. Setting the emperor in the context of the kings and emperors who preceded him, the book explores how Constantine’s propagandists exploited the traditional themes and imagery of rulership to portray him as having been elected by the supreme solar God to save his people and inaugurate a brilliant golden age. ‘Bardill’s monograph is a major contribution to Constantine studies. His overarching argument, that the emperor’s monuments offered an open-ended set of associations that may have resonated differently for different viewers, but which cohered into a consistent vision of divinely sanctioned solar monotheism, is a welcome response to more one-dimensional interpretations of the reign. The volume is well written, thoroughly researched and handsomely produced. Its abundant illustrations include illuminating reconstructions of several key monuments in their ancient environments.’ Elizabeth Marlowe, The Journal of Roman Studies 2015 279 x 216 mm 465pp 227 b/w illus. 2 maps 978-1-107-53898-6 Paperback £23.99 / US$36.99 Also available 978-0-521-76423-0 Hardback £84.99 / US$135.00 For all formats available, see

Nicolaus of Damascus: The Life of Augustus and The Autobiography
Publication March 2016
Texts, Translations and Historical Commentary Edited and translated by Mark Toher Union College, New York
Nicolaus of Damascus, the chief minister of Herod the Great, was an exact contemporary of the first Roman emperor Augustus; he spent considerable time in Roman society and knew Augustus. The extensive remains of his Bios Kaisaros contain the earliest and most detailed account of the conspiracy against Julius Caesar and his assassination. The Bios also presents the most extensive account of the boyhood and early development of Augustus. This edition presents the Greek text and translation of the Bios and Nicolaus’ autobiography, along with a historical and historiographical commentary. The Introduction situates the text in relation to the considerable evidence for the life and career of Nicolaus preserved in the works of Josephus, addresses the problem of its date of composition, analyses the language and narrative technique of Nicolaus and discusses the Bios in relation to the evidence for Greek biographical encomium.

The New Cambridge History of the Bible Volume 3: From 1450 to 1750 Edited by Euan Cameron Union Theological Seminary, New York
This volume charts the Bible’s progress from the end of the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. During this period, for the first time since antiquity, the Latin Church focused on recovering and re-establishing the text of Scripture in its original languages. It considered the theological challenges of treating Scripture as another ancient text edited with the tools of philology. This crucial period also saw the creation of many definitive translations of the Bible into modern European vernaculars. Although previous translations exist, these early modern translators, often under the influence of the Protestant Reformation, distinguished themselves in their efforts to communicate the nuances of the original texts and to address contemporary doctrinal controversies. In the Renaissance’s rich explosion of ideas, Scripture played a ubiquitous role, influencing culture through its presence in philosophy, literature, and the arts. This history examines the Bible’s impact in Europe and its increasing prominence around the globe. Contributors: Euan Cameron, Alastair Hamilton, Jill Kraye, Richard Rex, Scott Mandelbrote, Eldon J. The New Cambridge History of the Bible Volume 4: From 1750 to the Present Edited by John Riches University of Glasgow
This volume examines the Bible’s role in the modern world – beginning with a treatment of its production and distribution that discusses publishers, printers, text critics, and translators and continuing with a presentation of new methods of studying the text that have emerged, including historical, literary, social-scientific, feminist, postcolonial, liberal, and fundamentalist readings. There is a full discussion of the changes in understandings of and approaches to the Bible in various faith communities. The dissemination of the Bible throughout the globe has also produced a host of new interpretations, and this volume provides a comprehensive geographical survey of its reception. In the final chapters, the authors offer a thematic overview of the Bible in relation to literature, art, film, science, and other disciplines. They demonstrate that, in spite of challenges to the Bible’s authority in western Europe, it remains highly relevant and influential, not least in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. In this book, Joshua Ezra Burns describes the birth of Christianity as a function of the Jewish past. He examines how the authors of Judaism’s earliest surviving memories of Christianity speak to the perspectives of rabbinic observers who were conditioned by the unique circumstances of their encounters with Christianity to recognize its adherents as fellow Jews. Advance praise: ‘Joshua Burns makes a vital and highly original contribution to our understanding of the complex process by which ancient Jews and Christians parted company, even as they wrestled with how to imagine and envision one another. While his agenda is ambitious, his deploying of the relevant Jewish and Christian literary traces that inform his argument is hermeneutically astute and methodologically cautious. This is a historian of ancient Jews and Christians at his best, both for his critical construction of the past as for his profound challenge to contemporary theological communication across the vicissitudes of collective memory.’ Steven Fraade, Yale University, Connecticut 2016 228 x 152 mm 352pp 978-1-107-12047-1 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 Publication February 2016 For all formats available, see

Historical scholarship and cinema alike tend to see the conflict as the culmination of long Jewish resistance to Roman oppression. In this volume, Steven Mason re-examines the war in all relevant contexts (such as the Parthian dimension, and Judaea’s place in Roman Syria) and phases, from the Hasmoneans to the fall of Masada. Mason approaches each topic as a historical investigation, clarifying problems that need to be solved, understanding the available evidence, and considering scenarios that might explain the evidence. The simplest reconstructions make the conflict more humanly intelligible while casting doubt on received knowledge. Advance praise: ‘No study of the Jewish-Roman war approaches this one in level of sophistication, thoroughness, sweep of erudition, provocative ideas, and originality.’ Erich S. POLITICS IN ESTHER
The Herzl Institute, Jerusalem
A political crisis erupts when the Persian government falls to fanatics, and a Jewish insider goes rogue, determined to save her people at all costs. God and Politics in Esther explores politics and faith. It is about an era in which the prophets have been silenced and miracles have ceased, and Jewish politics has come to depend not on commands from on high, but on the boldness and belief of each woman and man. Judaism win friends and allies, reverse terrifying decrees, and bring God’s justice into the world with her own hands. Hazony’s The Dawn has long been a cult classic, read at Purim each year the world over. Twenty years on, this revised edition brings the book to much wider attention. Three controversial new chapters address the astonishingly radical theology that emerges from amid the political intrigues of the book. 2016 228 x 152 mm 254pp 978-1-107-13205-4 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 978-1-107-58345-0 Paperback £18.99 / US$29.99 Publication January 2016 For all formats available, see

The Cambridge History of Jewish American Literature Edited by Hana Wirth-Nesher Tel-Aviv University
This History offers an unparalleled examination of all aspects of Jewish American literature. Jewish writing has played a central role in the formation of the national literature of the United States, from the Hebraic sources of the Puritan imagination to narratives of immigration and acculturation. This body of writing has also enriched global Jewish literature in its engagement with Jewish history and Jewish multilingual culture. Written by a host of leading scholars, The Cambridge History of Jewish American Literature offers an array of approaches that contribute to current debates about ethnic writing, minority discourse, transnational literature, gender studies, and multilingualism. This History takes a fresh look at celebrated authors, introduces new voices, locates Jewish American literature on the map of American ethnicity as well as the spaces of exile and diaspora, and stretches the boundaries of American literature beyond the Americas and the West. Judaism The Book of Ecclesiastes (Qohelet) and the Path to Joyous Living T. A. Perry University of Connecticut
This is the first full-length study of Ecclesiastes using methods of philosophical exegesis, specifically those of the modern French philosophers Levinas and Blanchot. T. A. Perry breaks down Ecclesiastes’ motto ‘all is vanity’ and returns ‘vanity’ to its original concrete meaning of ‘breath’, the breath of life. ‘Tony Perry has done it again. Yet another path-clearing book that opens the Bible’s wisdom literature to the philosophic mind and the literary ear, as well as to the text scholar’s critical gaze and the human reader’s searching heart. Perry has transformed received understandings of ‘hebel/ vanity’ in ways that make Qohelet all the more central a guide to the contemporary – as well as the ancient – heart/mind.’ Peter Ochs, Bronfman Professor of Modern Judaic Studies, University of Virginia 2015 228 x 152 mm 273pp 978-1-107-08804-7 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

The Origins of Organized Charity in Rabbinic Judaism Gregg E. Gardner University of British Columbia, Vancouver
Charity is a central concept of Judaism and a hallmark of Jewish giving is to provide for the poor in collective and anonymous ways. This book examines the origins of these ideas in the foundational works of rabbinic Judaism, texts from the second to third centuries CE. ‘This book represents a very fine and fine-grained study of institutional charity in tannaitic literature. Its strengths are its intimate familiarity with the rabbinic primary texts and the secondary literature thereon, the clarity of its structure and argumentation, and its integration of archaeological evidence, GrecoRoman and Christian material, and modern theory. Besides providing a profoundly well-informed overview of the emergence of a set of institutions crucial for the development of Judaism and ultimately of the ‘Judeo-Christian’ and even ‘Abrahamic’ traditions, the book marks a genuine advance in our understanding of the historical context for the emergence of the
tamhui and the quppa, the differences between these two institutions, and the differences between tannaitic and amoraic approaches to these institutions.’ Tzvi Novick, University of Notre Dame, Indiana 2015 228 x 152 mm 252pp 978-1-107-09543-4 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

The Polish Underground and the Jews, 1939–1945 Joshua D. Zimmerman Yeshiva University, New York
This book examines one of the central problems in the history of Polish-Jewish relations: the attitude and the behavior of the Polish Underground towards the Jews during the Holocaust. Zimmerman argues that the reaction of the Polish Underground was immensely varied, ranging from aggressive aid to acts of murder. ‘This is a superb history of one of the oddest episodes of World War II. Zimmerman has emerged as one of the best experts on the history of the controversial Polish-Jewish relations. His matter-of-fact style further dramatizes the Polish-Jewish affairs during World War II when the Polish underground army heroically fought against the Nazis, sometimes killing and sometimes helping the Jews who also participated in the anti-Nazi struggle. A shocking drama and a wonderfully researched, documented and written book – a real page-turner.’ Ivan T. Zionism and Judaism A New Theory David Novak University of Toronto
This book argues that Zionism is only a coherent political stance when it is intelligently rooted in Judaism, especially in the classical Jewish doctrine of God’s election of the people of Israel and the commandment to them to settle the land of Israel. ‘Anyone who is serious about the idea that God gave Israel the Torah and the land of Israel must read this book by today’s doyen of Jewish philosophical theology. Those who study it will learn immensely from David Novak’s lifetime of learning, and those who differ with his conclusions, or his premises, will be challenged to see if they can do better in addressing one of the great questions facing Judaism today: how the modern state of Israel can thrive as a Jewish, democratic state at peace with its neighbors, its living heritage and itself.’ Lenn E. Chopsticks A Cultural and Culinary History Q. Edward Wang Rowan University, New Jersey
Chopsticks have become a quintessential part of the Japanese, Chinese and Korean culinary experience across the globe, with more than one fifth of the world’s population using them daily to eat. In this vibrant, highly original account of the history of chopsticks, Q. Edward Wang charts their evolution from a simple eating implement in ancient times to their status as a much more complex, cultural symbol today. Opening in the Neolithic Age, at the first recorded use of chopsticks, the book surveys their practice through Chinese history, before exploring their transmission in the fifth century to other parts of Asia, including Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Mongolia. Calling upon a striking selection of artwork, the author illustrates how chopstick use has influenced Asian cuisine, and how, in turn the cuisine continues to influence chopstick use, both in Asia and across the globe.

These include radical notions of dignity and equality, religious freedom, liberty of conscience, limited government, consent of the governed, economic liberty, autonomous civil society, and church-state separation, as well as more recent advances in democracy, human rights, and human development. Acknowledging that the record is mixed, scholars document how the seeds of freedom in Christianity antedate and ultimately undermine later Christian justifications and practices of persecution. Christianity and Freedom Volume 2: Contemporary Perspectives Edited by Allen D. Hertzke University of Oklahoma
and Timothy Samuel Shah Georgetown University, Washington DC
Volume 2 of Christianity and Freedom illuminates how Christian minorities and transnational Christian networks contribute to the freedom and flourishing of societies across the globe, even amidst pressure and violent persecution. Featuring unprecedented field research by some of the world’s most distinguished scholars, it documents the outsized role of Christians in promoting human rights and religious freedom; fighting injustice; stimulating economic equality; providing education, social services, and health care; and nurturing democratic civil society. Readers will come away surprised and sobered to learn how this very Christian link to freedom often invites persecution. What are the dimensions of persecution and how are Christians responding to that pressure? What resources – theological, social, or transnational – do they marshal in

against 597 religious minorities in 177 countries between 1990 and 2008. Advance praise: ‘The Unfree Exercise of Religion, Jonathan Fox’s latest global analysis of the status of religions, solidifies his standing as the leading empirical scholar on the subject. He shows that discrimination against the practices and institutions of 597 minority religions is ubiquitous. More than six out of ten minorities in this new study faced discrimination on one and usually many of 29 indicators. Causal analyses show that no one or handful of conditions can explain why. Whether the state has an official religion, and whether the minority is seen as a security threat, are relevant but so are many other factors. It may be unsurprising that discrimination against religious minorities of every major sect, in every world region, has increased since 1990. But who would have thought that the prosperous Christian democracies would be more discriminatory than their democratic counterparts in the Third World? Could we have anticipated that, globally, Christian religious minorities are most likely to be subject to discrimination and Muslim minorities least so? Unfree Exercise is a remarkable databased study that spans the entire range of questions, both descriptive and casual, about the nature, causes, and impact of discrimination against religious minorities in 177 countries.’ Ted Robert Gurr, University of Maryland, College Park 2016 228 x 152 mm 210pp 36 tables 978-1-107-13306-8 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 Publication February 2016 For all formats available, see

Islam and Democracy in Indonesia Tolerance without Liberalism Jeremy Menchik Boston University
This book explains what tolerance means to the leaders of the world’s largest Islamic organizations. It is based on two years of research in Indonesia – the world’s largest Muslimmajority country and a consolidated democracy – including hundreds of archival documents, in-depth interviews, personal observations, and a new survey. Advance praise: ‘The world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Indonesia’s success at transitioning to democracy has perplexed students of comparative Muslim politics – as has the tendency for Indonesian democracy to show a decidedly non-liberal attitude toward matters of religious pluralism. In this richly researched and elegantly argued book, Jeremy Menchik explains how both phenomena have been possible. In so doing, he also offers a study of great importance, not just to Indonesianists, but to scholars and readers interested in the prospects for democracy in the broader Muslim world.’ Robert Hefner, Director of the Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs, Boston University Cambridge Studies in Social Theory, Religion and Politics

Godless Democrats and Pious Republicans? Party Activists, Party Capture, and the ‘God Gap’ Ryan L. Claassen Kent State University, Ohio
Godless Democrats and Pious Republicans? challenges a conventional wisdom in which recently mobilized religious and Secular extremists captured the parties and created a God gap. Using surveys (1960–2008), Claassen investigates the motivations of religious and non-religious activists and produces a new way of understanding the religious divide in American politics. ‘This thoughtful and empirically detailed study of religion and party activism takes us miles beyond simplistic commentaries about godly Republicans and godless Democrats.’ Morris P. Political Secularism, Religion, and the State A Time Series Analysis of Worldwide Data Jonathan Fox Bar-Ilan University, Israel
This book examines how the competition between religious and secular forces influenced state religion policy between 1990 and 2008. While both sides were active, the religious side had considerably more success. The book examines how states supported religion as well as how they restricted it. ‘Drawing on an impressive wealth of new data, Fox offers more detail and nuance on the relationship between religion and state than any publication to date. He demonstrates that the relationship is often not what it seems: apparent efforts to support religion can serve as mechanisms for control; despite expectations of insignificance, religion remains a central concern in state policies; and rather than being stable, as constitutions might suggest, the relationships between religion and state are ever changing.’ Roger Finke, Pennsylvania State University

The Cambridge Handbook of Western Mysticism and Esotericism Edited by Glenn Alexander Magee Long Island University, New York
Mysticism and esotericism are two intimately related strands of the Western tradition. Despite their close connections, however, scholars tend to treat them separately. Whereas the study of Western mysticism enjoys a
long and established history, Western esotericism is a young field. The Cambridge Handbook of Western Mysticism and Esotericism examines both of these traditions together. The volume demonstrates that the roots of esotericism almost always lead back to mystical traditions, while the work of mystics was bound up with esoteric or occult preoccupations. It also shows why mysticism and esotericism must be examined together if either is to be understood fully. Including contributions by leading scholars, this volume features essays on such topics as alchemy, astrology, magic, Neoplatonism, Kabbalism, Renaissance Hermetism, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, numerology, Christian theosophy, spiritualism, and much more. This handbook serves as both a capstone of contemporary scholarship and a cornerstone of future research. Advance praise: ‘Glenn Magee has brought together a ‘dream team’ of scholars, and from an impressively broad range of generations, from esteemed senior doyens to emerging young intellectuals about to reshape the conversation once again. Magee also brings his own trademark philosophical clarity to the definitional and historical tasks at hand. The result is a cutting-edge collection of essays that delivers exactly what it promises: a concise and clear map of the hidden intellectual tradition of the West from ancient Greece to today.’ Jeffrey J. The Cambridge History of Religions in Latin America Edited by Virginia Garrard-Burnett University of Texas, Austin
Paul Freston Balsillie School of International Affairs
and Stephen C. Dove Centre College, Danville, Kentucky
The Cambridge History of Religions in Latin America covers religious history in Latin America from pre-Conquest times until the present. This timely publication is important, firstly, because of the historical and contemporary centrality of religion in the life of Latin America, a region which has been growing in global importance; secondly, for the rapid process of religious change which the region is undergoing; and thirdly, for the region’s religious distinctiveness in global comparative terms, which contributes to its importance for debates over religion, globalization, and modernity, not least because Latin America now has more Catholics and more Pentecostals than any other region of the world. Unlike most works on religion in the region, and in recognition of recent strides in scholarship, this volume addresses the breadth of Latin American religion, including religions of the African diaspora, indigenous spiritual expressions, new religious movements, alternative spiritualities, and secularizing tendencies. African American Religions, 1500–2000 Colonialism, Democracy, and Freedom Sylvester A. Johnson Northwestern University, Illinois
This book provides a narrative historical, postcolonial account of African American religions. It examines how African American religions have been shaped by early relations between sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, American imperial practices in the 1700s and 1800s, and FBI repression in the twentieth century. ‘Not a conventional survey of African American religion, which might trace religious origins and developments, this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the conditions of
Religious Refugees in the Early Modern World An Alternative History of the Reformation Nicholas Terpstra University of Toronto
This book examines the emergence of the religious refugee as a mass phenomenon from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries. It considers how Europeans pictured a range of threats as social contagions and how they dealt with these threats by purging ideas, objects, and people. ‘This enormously rich, thoughtful, and penetrating book offers a strikingly new perspective on the Reformation by probing its abiding obsession with purity, contagion, and purgation. These instincts, common to many faiths, were the stimulus to massive movements of populations, and in the process helped reshape both contemporary society and the European mind. If we want to know how massive human suffering can emerge from the best of intentions, we could do no better than start with this book.’ Andrew Pettegree, University of St Andrews

A Printed Icon in Early Modern Italy Forlì’s Madonna of the Fire Lisa Pon Southern Methodist University, Texas
In this book, Lisa Pon considers a cascade of moments in the cultural biography of the town of Forlì’s miraculous woodcut, the Madonna of the Fire. In doing so, Pon offers an experiment in art historical inquiry that spans more than three centuries of making, remaking, and renewal. ‘Lisa Pon, one of the most distinguished historians of early prints, has given us a biography of the several ‘lives’ of a single image – a lone surviving impression of an anonymous early woodcut. Pon’s exemplary case study deftly combines modern critical theory with deep historical sleuthing to elucidate the significance across the centuries of both Madonna of the Fire and its replications for Forlì’s religious and civic community alike.’ Larry Silver, Farquhar Professor of Art History, University of Pennsylvania 2015 253 x 177 mm 301pp 99 b/w illus. 4 colour illus. 1 map 978-1-107-09851-0 Hardback £65.00 / US$99.00 For all formats available, see

Religion (general) Magna Carta, Religion and the Rule of Law
Religion, Charity and Human Rights
Edited by Robin Griffith-Jones
Kerry O’Halloran
Temple Church and King’s College London
Queensland University of Technology
and Mark Hill, QC
This comparative analysis of six common law nations identifies and assesses the issues currently challenging judiciary, regulators and religious charities.
Cardiff University
Central to Magna Carta is the concept of the English Church. Law, politics, religion and history all interweave in this examination of the Charter’s religious foundations and their place in Common Law jurisdictions. It invites all religions to ask what contribution they make to today’s secular, democratic rule of law. ‘Robin Griffith-Jones and Mark Hill QC have assembled a magisterial line-up of thinkers to tease out critical issues around law and religion. Magna Carta, Religion and the Rule of Law is an important book bringing substantial intellectual resources to bear on a key subject for our time; it deserves thoughtful, questioning reading.’ Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury 2015 228 x 152 mm 434pp 2 b/w illus. 978-1-107-10019-0 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 978-1-107-49436-7 Paperback £24.99 / US$39.99 For all formats available, see

Medieval Heresies Christianity, Judaism, and Islam Christine Caldwell Ames University of South Carolina
A comparative history of heresy in Latin and Greek Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, spanning the fourth to the sixteenth century. ‘By showing that heresy can be treated within a single framework which embraces Christianity, Judaism and Islam, Caldwell Ames has in effect redefined the subject, and made an important contribution to comparative world history. Divining Slavery and Freedom The Story of Domingos Sodré, an African Priest in NineteenthCentury Brazil João José Reis Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil
Translated by H. Sabrina Gledhill
Domingos Sodré, an African diviner enslaved in Brazil, managed to obtain his freedom and become a slave owner himself. The book uses Sodré’s 1862 arrest on suspicion of witchcraft as a catalyst for discussing African religion and its place in Brazil’s slave society. ‘The main character in this book was an African born in Lagos and taken to Brazil on a slave ship; but there he obtained manumission and became owner of slaves. Although a diviner and healer, the leading figure of a candomblé house of worship, Domingos Sodré married in a Catholic church. He led a society devoted to buying the freedom of enslaved Africans; however, the organization
