Featured authors John Macnicol, London School of Economics and Political Science Author of Neoliberalising Old Age Across the industrialised world, the old age and social policy agenda is changing. Governments are encouraging later-life working, state pension ages are being raised and the whole future of old age and retirement as specially-protected stages of life is under question. These developments are often seen as being driven by naturalistic and inevitable demographic forces and fiscal constraints which will make retirement increasingly unaffordable in decades to come. This book, however, challenges this prevailing view and instead argues that the driving forces have been neoliberalism as a political ideology and the associated structural economic and labour market changes that have in part produced neoliberalism.

Paromita Sanyal, Cornell University Author of Credit to Capabilities I wanted to write a book that delves into the controversial issue of microfinance programs and women’s empowerment through small-scale collateral free loans. I argue that it is the “associational mechanism” of group-based microcredit programs, which includes being formed into groups and having face-to-face interactions in weekly or bi-weekly group meetings that is instrumental in empowering a large number of women. This book, based on interviews with microcredit members, gives an account of women’s participation in microcredit groups and its effect on their lives that is missing in economics and anthropological works on microcredit.

Social theory
Social theory German Cosmopolitan Social Thought and the Idea of the West Voices from Weimar Austin Harrington University of Leeds
This groundbreaking study in social theory draws on neglected sources in early twentieth-century German social thought to address core questions in current social science about the place, status and hubris of the modern West in global social and historical change. Advance praise: ‘This is a significant book that questions the received view about classical social theory. With considerable erudition and a careful reading of a wide range of the most important thinkers in early twentiethcentury Germany, Harrington shows that these theorists had already anticipated some of the ideas that are more commonly associated with contemporary thought. He also demonstrates that the traditional view of the decline of cosmopolitanism needs to be revisited.’ Gerard Delanty, University of Sussex 2016 228 x 152 mm 528pp 978-1-107-11091-5 Hardback £84.99 / US$135.00 Publication February 2016 For all formats available, see

Order on the Edge of Chaos Social Psychology and the Problem of Social Order Edited by Edward J. Lawler Cornell University, New York
Shane R. Thye University of South Carolina
and Jeongkoo Yoon EWHA Women’s University, Seoul
Order on the Edge of Chaos provides new answers to the classic Hobbesian question: ‘how is social order possible?’ It reveals different ways that people create order and stability from the ‘bottom up’. This volume will appeal to graduate students, undergraduates, and researchers in micro-sociology, social psychology, sociology of culture, political sociology, economy and society, and theory. ‘Too often, the deep social theory questions that sit at the root of classical social theory are ignored by rigorous contemporary scientific theory that is focused primarily on solving practical middle-range problems. Thankfully, this book bucks that trend and collects careful and clear theorizing on the relation between social action and social order. The works collected here represent the very best of contemporary sociological social psychology, deeply motivated by the fundamental question of social order. The results speak to questions of power, identity, stability, meaning, morals, and more. The work will be a key resource for students in social theory courses and professional sociologists seeking to answer big questions in a rigorous manner.’ James Moody, Robert O. Human Beings in International Relations Edited by Daniel Jacobi Goethe-Universität Frankfurt Am Main
and Annette Freyberg-Inan Technische Universität, Darmstadt, Germany
This volume presents and advances the debate about how, why and to which ends ideas about humans are built into our theories and how we come to see world politics and humanity’s role in it as a result. It is the first survey devoted to this subject in international relations. ‘Human Beings in International Relations is a theoretical treasure trove. Jacobi and Freyberg-Inan make us aware of a remarkable variety of theoretical perspectives on ‘thinking the human’. They make those perspectives resonate with or contradict each other, unburying many research paths that must have been there all along, but still await our analysis.’ Stefano Guzzini, Danish Institute for International Studies, Uppsala University and Pontifical Catholic University, Rio de Janeiro 2015 228 x 152 mm 394pp 1 table 978-1-107-11625-2 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

Reconstructing Sociology The Critical Realist Approach Douglas V. Porpora Drexel University, Philadelphia
The first book-length introduction to critical realism for students and scholars of sociology, this book offers a general critique of sociology, particularly in the United States, from a critical realist perspective. Numerous sociological examples are included, and each chapter addresses well-known and current work in sociology. ‘American sociology badly needs to learn critical realism and to rethink its assumptions, practices, and standards in realist terms. Doug Porpora here provides an easy but smart on-ramp into critical realism for sociology that I hope serves as an introduction to realism that many students and scholars use to gain a new perspective on our discipline.’ Christian Smith, Wm. Insights into culture and society can be acquired by observing, analyzing and theorizing visible behavior of people and material products of culture. This book provides scholars, students, artists and professionals with a systematic and analytical presentation and discussion of methods and techniques to visually study and communicate culture and society. ‘A remarkably readable, yet highly scholarly exposure of approaches to research that open up the riches of contemporary and historical sources of visual culture. This book will be of great value to anyone involved at the cutting edge of carrying out visual research. Chapters include the rise of the apocalyptic scenario in public debate, the success of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, climate art and ill-conceived advertising campaigns, the meaning of recent climate conferences, and the impacts of climate-linked natural disasters. ‘Climate Change as Social Drama brings the powerful theoretical approaches developed by cultural sociology to the study of climate change. Through a detailed rhetorical analysis of key areas of contention, Philip Smith and Nicolas Howe provide a unique and insightful perspective on the contentious debate on climate change. Social theory The Politics of Objectivity
Explaining Social Behavior
An Essay on the Foundations of Political Conflict Peter J. Steinberger
More Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences Second edition Jon Elster
Reed College, Oregon
Peter J. Steinberger reaffirms the idea of rationalism in politics by examining important problems of public life in the light of established philosophical doctrine. This book argues that political conflict is a discursive endeavor deeply implicated in the rational pursuit of theories about how things in the world really are. ‘This book boldly addresses a complex world of political ideas and theories, working to unearth the metaphysical commitments that govern social and political existence. Engaging a universe of discourse that infuses the state, procedural justice, and political conflict, Steinberger generates a remarkable understanding of objectivity and its place in political life.’ Lucas Swaine, Dartmouth College 2015 228 x 152 mm 287pp 978-1-107-10938-4 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

Collège de France, Paris
This substantially revised edition of Jon Elster’s acclaimed book exploring the nature of social behavior features a wholly new chapter and a new conclusion. Proposing choice as the central concept of the social sciences, this book will greatly interest upper-level students and undergraduates of political philosophy, economics, psychology and social theory. ‘After donning, for the first edition of this book, his shining analytical armor to illuminate what obscurantists desperately don’t want you to see, Jon Elster is on the attack again. Spurred in equal measure by a ceaseless desire to improve his own analyses and by ‘the alarming rise of nonsense masquerading as scholarship’, he has produced a fortified new edition, adding to and refining the previous material.’ Diego Gambetta, European University Institute, Florence 2015 228 x 152 mm 516pp 43 b/w illus. 8 tables 978-1-107-07118-6 Hardback £69.99 / US$110.00 978-1-107-41641-3 Paperback £22.99 / US$36.99 For all formats available, see

Social theory Governing Borderless Threats Non-Traditional Security and the Politics of State Transformation Shahar Hameiri Murdoch University, Western Australia
and Lee Jones Queen Mary University of London
Border-spanning, ‘non-traditional’ security problems – pandemics, climate change and organised crime – pervade the global agenda. This is the first book that systematically explains how such problems are governed. Theoretically innovative and empirically rich, with in-depth Asian case studies, it will interest scholars and practitioners of international relations, security, and global governance. ‘Many of today’s major global challenges – natural disasters, climate change, organized crime, capital flight – defy conventional intellectual frameworks. This book brilliantly demonstrates the mismatch using SE Asian cases and shows us how to move beyond it.’ John Agnew, University of California, Los Angeles 2015 228 x 152 mm 286pp 4 b/w illus. 978-1-107-11088-5 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

and Jaan Valsiner Aalborg University, Denmark
A social representations approach offers an empirical utility for addressing myriad social concerns such as social order, ecological sustainability, national identity, racism, religious communities, the public understanding of science, health and social marketing. The core aspects of social representations theory have been debated over many years and some still remain widely misunderstood. This handbook provides an overview of these core aspects and brings together theoretical strands and developments in the theory, some of which have become pillars in the social sciences in their own right. Academics and students in the social sciences working with concepts and methods such as social identity, discursive psychology, positioning theory, semiotics, attitudes, risk perception and social values will find this an invaluable resource.

Crossing the Aisle Party Switching by US Legislators in the Postwar Era Antoine Yoshinaka State University of New York, Buffalo
This book is the first systematic study of the causes and consequences of legislative party switching in the US. It provides a sophisticated analysis combining quantitative data from Congress and state legislatures with elite interviews with switchers, nonswitchers, and a party leader, including a ‘real time’ look into the decision. ‘By focusing on ambition – both the desire for higher office and the goal of influencing policy deliberations, Crossing the Aisle offers a compelling analysis of party switching in the US Congress and state legislatures. Framing the European Union The Power of Political Arguments in Shaping European Integration Ece Özlem Atikcan Université Laval, Québec
What is the impact of political language upon public opinion towards European integration? Ece Özlem Atikcan examines the role of political campaigning in six EU referendum votes in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Ireland. Based upon in-depth interviews, this study will be essential reading for academics, policymakers, politicians and campaigners. ‘Failed national referendums on proposals to change EU treaties have been a major reason for declining European Union legitimacy and political crisis. Ece Özlem Atikcan proposes new ways to explain this. Using concepts from the social movement literature and excellent interview data, Atikcan elegantly refocuses our understanding not only of EU referendums, but also on the intimate workings of direct democracy.’ George Ross, Université de Montréal 2015 228 x 152 mm 342pp 64 b/w illus. 38 tables 978-1-107-11517-0 Hardback £74.99 / US$120.00 For all formats available, see

Political sociology Rebel Governance in Civil War Edited by Ana Arjona Northwestern University, Illinois
Nelson Kasfir Dartmouth College, New Hampshire
and Zachariah Mampilly Vassar College, New York
The topic of this book is how rebels govern civilians during civil war. It takes a worldwide comparative approach. Its theoretical analyses involve issues in the characteristics, emergence, evolution, decline, and consequences of rebel governance. Its empirical accounts discuss insurgent groups around the globe, including Latin American, African, Asian, and European cases. ‘This imaginative, diverse, and highly readable book, with chapters grounded in particular cases, guides attention to civilians living under varied conditions of rebel rule. While the problem of effective governance by weak states has consumed the attention of policy makers for several decades, those governed by rebels merit equal public concern. The intriguing essays in this volume do just that, constituting a book that teaches us when and how insurgent organizations seek to govern.’ David D. Laitin, James T. Watkins IV and Elise V. This study examines the political sources of violence against religious minorities in India. Focusing on Hindu organizations that have asserted dominance over religious minorities, particularly since the late 1980s, Amrita Basu questions the common assumption that Hindu-Muslim violence is inevitable. ‘Amrita Basu’s richly researched, theoretically informed and multifaceted study revisits the question of the relationship between Hindu nationalism and communal violence. Diplomacy can help explain key dimensions of world politics, including international law, war, international organizations, humanitarianism, and economic governance. Examining contemporary changes in diplomacy through social theoretical frameworks, this book sheds new light on how the evolution of diplomacy is integral to the making and remaking of world politics. ‘As said of war and generals, diplomacy is too serious a matter to be left to the accredited representatives of the sovereign state. The authors offer new theoretical insights into the symbolic, strategic and institutional importance of traditional diplomacy while acknowledging cell-phone activists, camera-ready celebrities, humanitarian workers and lance corporals in a three-block war as the new faces of diplomacy. This collection has the jolt of an intellectual defibrillator, bringing diplomacy back from a grossly exaggerated death while nurturing emergent forms of global mediation.’

The Political Sociology of Human Rights Kate Nash Goldsmiths, University of London
This textbook develops a sociological approach to human rights that considers both commonalities and differences in contexts, actors and claims for human rights around the world. Drawing on case studies of organisations and institutions, it illustrates how human rights are being used to address structures of violence, inequality and insecurity. ‘The idea of human rights is at once widely accepted, unevenly implemented, and recurrently challenged. It is thus crucial to study how human rights work (and sometimes fail to work despite apparent agreement), who brings claims and how they are met. Kate Nash’s The Political Sociology of Human Rights does this with insight and clarity and it deserves wide attention.’ Craig Calhoun, Director, London School of Economics and Political Science
Contents: 1. The social construction of human rights; 2. (A) human rights movement(s) and other organisations; 3. States of human rights; 4. The United Nations: not a world state; 5. Humanising capitalism; 6. Women’s rights are human rights; 7. Do migrants have rights?; 8. What works? Paradoxes in the human rights field.

Compliant Rebels Rebel Groups and International Law in World Politics Hyeran Jo Texas A & M University
Hyeran Jo analyzes civil wars over the past twenty years and finds that, contrary to conventional wisdom, some rebel groups actually comply with international law. This book examines this phenomenon of compliant rebels and why they exist and emerge all around the world. ‘This path-breaking book demonstrates through superb quantitative and qualitative empirical studies that non-state violent actors, such as rebel groups, are likely to comply with international law – if and when they seek political legitimacy. Hyeran Jo’s work gives us hope that atrocities and gross human rights violations during civil wars can be overcome. Sociology of religion Islam and Democracy in Indonesia Tolerance without Liberalism Jeremy Menchik Boston University
This book explains what tolerance means to the leaders of the world’s largest Islamic organizations. It is based on two years of research in Indonesia – the world’s largest Muslim-majority country and a consolidated democracy – including hundreds of archival documents, in-depth interviews, personal observations, and a new survey. ‘The world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Indonesia’s success at transitioning to democracy has perplexed students of comparative Muslim politics – as has the tendency for Indonesian democracy to show a decidedly non-liberal attitude toward matters of religious pluralism. In this richly researched and elegantly argued book, Jeremy Menchik explains how both phenomena have been possible. In so doing, he also offers a study of great importance, not just to Indonesianists, but to scholars and readers interested in the prospects for democracy in the broader Muslim world.’ Robert Hefner, Director of the Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs, Boston University Cambridge Studies in Social Theory, Religion and Politics

Godless Democrats and Pious Republicans? Party Activists, Party Capture, and the ‘God Gap’ Ryan L. Claassen Kent State University, Ohio
Godless Democrats and Pious Republicans? challenges a conventional wisdom in which recently mobilized religious and Secular extremists captured the parties and created a God gap. Using surveys (1960–2008), Claassen investigates the motivations of religious and non-religious activists and produces a new way of understanding the religious divide in American politics. ‘This thoughtful and empirically detailed study of religion and party activism takes us miles beyond simplistic commentaries about godly Republicans and godless Democrats.’ Morris P. Sociology of religion Political Secularism, Religion, and the State A Time Series Analysis of Worldwide Data Jonathan Fox Bar-Ilan University, Israel
This book examines how the competition between religious and secular forces influenced state religion policy between 1990 and 2008. While both sides were active, the religious side had considerably more success. The book examines how states supported religion as well as how they restricted it. ‘Drawing on an impressive wealth of new data, Fox offers more detail and nuance on the relationship between religion and state than any publication to date. He demonstrates that the relationship is often not what it seems: apparent efforts to support religion can serve as mechanisms for control; despite expectations of insignificance, religion remains a central concern in state policies; and rather than being stable, as constitutions might suggest, the relationships between religion and state are ever changing.’ Roger Finke, Pennsylvania State University

and Louisa Roberts Ohio State University
Using a range of primary and secondary sources, including the analysis of leftand right-wing newspaper reportage, this book traces the relationship between the left and anti-Semitism from the French Revolution to World War II and demonstrates the relationship between the left and anti-Semitism is much more profound than previously believed. ‘With a well-documented analysis of anti-Semitic discourse in nineteenthand twentieth-century political speech, books, pamphlets, manifestos, and right-wing and leftist newspapers, Brustein and Roberts argue that leftist movements contributed to themes and narratives that fueled modern European anti-Semitism. The animosity of the left to Jews stemmed from the conviction that Judaism was anti-modern, Jews were responsible for the evils of capitalism, and Jews were lukewarm nationalists. In France and Germany, these beliefs were not just a minor sideshow to virulent right-wing anti-Semitism but were shared by both adversaries. In the struggle with fascism the socialists did not fully distance themselves from anti-Semitism. In light of this record,

The Sociology of Early Sexual Development Celia Roberts
Ronit Dinovitzer
Lancaster University
Puberty today is understood to be in crisis: many claim children are growing up too fast and becoming sexual too early. This book critically explores cultural, scientific and medical debates around contemporary changes to pubertal timing, using examples from news media, environmental campaigns and paediatric science and medicine. ‘With characteristic, clear-eyed style, Celia Roberts negotiates the shoals of biological and social reductionism to give us a rigorous, richly entangled account of contemporary puberty. She clarifies the anxieties around the ‘precocious girl’ and identifies the many tributaries that feed the moral panic around feminine sexual development. This book should be read by anybody interested in a critical account of girlhood, the life course, sexuality, and the ways the biological and the social collaborate in the history of the body.’ Catherine Waldby, Professorial Future Fellow, University of Sydney 2015 228 x 152 mm 300pp 11 b/w illus. 978-1-107-10472-3 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

Sociology as a Population Science John H. Goldthorpe
Doing Interview-based Qualitative Research A Learner’s Guide Eva Magnusson
University of Oxford
Umeå Universitet, Sweden
John Goldthorpe provides a new rationale for recent developments in sociology, proposing that sociology should be understood as a ‘population science’ and develop as a science in a way which allows for a degree of continuity with the natural sciences, while preserving the field’s distinctiveness.
and Jeanne Marecek
‘In this book, Goldthorpe provides an elegant discussion on the fundamental tenets of sociology as a population science. Based on nine propositions, he explains what sociology is and is not, and defines its logic as a population science, where traditional disciplinary boundaries between sociology and demography, epidemiology and applied economics blur. Sociology as a Population Science should be read by all sociologists engaged in theoretically driven empirical research. Many will find a solid rationale for the type of sociology that they, in fact, already do and stronger and clearer conceptual bases to pursue their research further on. A precious book.’ Fabrizio Bernardi, European University Institute, and Chair, Board of the European Consortium for Sociological Research

A particular further merit is the attention to wide geographical and cross disciplinary reach. The authors draw on extensive experience in formulating this accessible guide, which manages to

Illuminating Dark Networks The Study of Clandestine Groups and Organizations Edited by Luke M. Gerdes United States Military Academy
Clandestine groups and networks are fundamentally different than transparent organizations. Consequently, we need new and different tools to understand terror groups, criminal networks, and other violent non-state actors (VNSAs). Illuminating Dark Networks explores the state of the art in methods to study dark networks. ‘Social network analysis is now a wellestablished paradigm within the social sciences and has been successfully applied to various types of relational data. However, until now, too little attention has been paid to how it should be applied to dark networks. Illuminating Dark Networks brings together leading academics, military researchers, and civilian analysts to provide the reader with the latest thinking on how to collect, analyze, and understand clandestine networks.

Incarceration Nation How the United States Became the Most Punitive Democracy in the World Peter K. Enns Cornell University, New York
The rise of mass incarceration in the United States is one of the most critical outcomes of the last half-century. Incarceration Nation offers the most compelling explanation of this outcome to date. This book combines in-depth analysis of Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon’s presidential campaigns with sixty years of data analysis. The result is a sophisticated and highly accessible picture of the rise of mass incarceration. In contrast to conventional wisdom, Peter K. Enns shows that during the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, politicians responded to an increasingly punitive public by pushing policy in a more punitive direction. The book also argues that media coverage of rising crime rates helped fuel the public’s punitiveness.
Criminology Equally as important, a decline in public punitiveness in recent years offers a critical window into understanding current bipartisan calls for criminal justice reform. Advance praise: ‘Did Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater, and other elected officials generate the ‘tough on crime’ political attitudes that led to the rapid rise in incarceration beginning in the 1970s? Or, was it a more general trend reflecting shifting media portrayals of crime and powerful forces in public opinion? In this path-breaking and rigorous analysis, Peter K. Enns answers these questions. And he also gives cause for hope that, with shifting public understandings of the nature of crime and the appropriate response to it, our long national infatuation with incarceration may have already come to an end. It is a methodological tour de force, of interest not only to those concerned with criminal justice, but also to those interested in a more general question: what is, and should be, the role of public opinion in determining public policy outcomes in a democracy?’ Frank R. Baumgartner, Richard J. Richardson Distinguished Professor of Political Science, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and coauthor of The Decline of the Death Penalty and the Discovery of Innocence

Job Skills and Minority Youth New Program Directions Barton J. Hirsch Northwestern University, Illinois

and mock interviews administered by human resource professionals. ‘Clearly written and accessible to a wide audience, Job Skills and Minority Youth is an original and valuable contribution to two fields that are ordinarily separate: youth development and employment training. One of the most distinctive and promising aspects of the program described in this book is its enlistment of representatives from ‘primary’ labor market firms – HR officers – to aid in training and testing disadvantaged youth. This is a bridge few programs build. The ‘backward mapping’ scheme laid out by Hirsch serves as both a succinct summary of the logic of the program and a clear rationale for focusing efforts on what matters most in helping to open opportunities for young people from Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods and for others from comparable communities.’ Stephen F. The Crisis of Journalism Reconsidered Democratic Culture, Professional Codes, Digital Future Edited by Jeffrey C. Alexander, Yale University, Connecticut Elizabeth Butler Breese, Panorama Education María Luengo, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid This collection of original essays brings a dramatically different perspective to bear on the contemporary ‘crisis of journalism’. Rather than seeing technological and economic change as the primary causes of current anxieties, The Crisis of Journalism Reconsidered draws attention to the role played by the cultural commitments of journalism itself. 1 The contributions are original, researched and well-written, so readers will engage with a new argument on the contemporary crisis of journalism 1 Ranges both historically and cross-nationally to put the ‘crisis of journalism’ in a longer-term perspective 1 By offering a conceptual and empirical evaluation of recent changes in journalism, the book offers a distinct perspective and analysis
