“…this extremely well structured text is an excellent book for a first course on Digital Communications. It covers exactly what is needed and it does so in a simple and rigorous manner…” Shlomo Shamai, Technion, Israel Institute of Technology “…perfect for a beginning mezzanine-level course in digital communications. The logical three layer - discrete-time, continuous-time, passband - approach to the problem of communication system design greatly enhances understanding. Numerous examples, problems, and MATLAB exercises make the book both student and instructor friendly.” Dan Costello, University of Notre Dame
RF and microwave engineering
10
This comprehensive and accessible text teaches the fundamentals of digital communication via a top-down-reversed approach, specifically formulated for a onesemester course. It offers students a smooth and exciting journey through the three sub-layers of the physical layer and is the result of many years of teaching digital communication.
Electromagnetics 11
The unique approach begins with the decision problem faced by the receiver of the first sub-layer (the decoder), hence cutting straight to the heart of digital communication, and enabling students to learn quickly, intuitively, and with minimal background knowledge. A swift and elegant extension to the second sub-layer leaves students with an understanding of how a receiver works. Signal design is addressed in a seamless sequence of steps, and finally the third sub-layer emerges as a refinement that decreases implementation costs and increases flexibility.
Control systems and optimization 11
The focus is on system-level design, with connections to physical reality, hardware constraints, engineering practice, and applications made throughout. Numerous worked examples, homework problems, and MATLAB simulation exercises make this text a solid basis for students to specialize in the field of digital communication and it is suitable for both traditional and flipped classroom teaching. Bixio Rimoldi is a Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, where he developed an introductory course on digital communication. Previously he was Associate Professor at Washington University and took visiting positions at Stanford, MIT, and Berkeley. He is an IEEE fellow, a past president of the IEEE Information Theory Society, and a past director of the communication system program at EPFL.

Sparse Image and Signal Processing Wavelets and Related Geometric Multiscale Analysis Second edition Jean-Luc Starck Centre d’etudes de Saclay, France
Fionn Murtagh Goldsmiths University of London and University of Derby
and Jalal Fadili Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs de Caen, France
This thoroughly updated edition presents state-of-the-art sparse and multiscale image and signal processing with applications in astronomy, biology, physics, MRI, digital media, and forensics. New chapters and sections cover dictionary learning, 3-D data
(data cubes), and geo-located data. MATLAB® and IDL code are available. Review of previous edition: ‘One of the main virtues of this book is the expert insight that the authors provide into several design and algorithmic choices that one can face when solving practical problems. The authors give some guidance into understanding how sparsity helps in signal and image processing, what some benefits of overcomplete representations are, when to use isotropic wavelets for image processing, why morphological diversity can be helpful, and how to choose between analysis and synthesis priors for regularization in inverse problems.’ Michael B. Bayesian Speech and Language Processing Shinji Watanabe Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories, Cambridge, Massachusetts
and Jen-Tzung Chien National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan
With this comprehensive guide readers will learn how they can apply Bayesian machine learning techniques systematically to solve speech and language processing problems. Including detailed practical explanations along with examples and case studies, this is an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and industry practitioners working in speech and language processing. ‘This book provides an overview of a wide range of fundamental theories of Bayesian learning, inference, and prediction for uncertainty modeling in speech and language processing. The uncertainty modeling is crucial in increasing the robustness of practical systems based on statistical modeling under real environments, such as automatic speech recognition systems under noise, and question answering systems based on limited size of training data. Introduction to Communication Systems Upamanyu Madhow University of California, Santa Barbara
An accessible undergraduate textbook introducing key fundamental principles behind modern communication systems, supported by exercises, software problems and lab exercises. ‘Madhow does it again: Introduction to Communication Systems is an accessible yet rigorous new text that does for undergraduates what his [Fundamentals of] Digital Communication book did for graduate students. It provides a superior treatment of not only the fundamentals of analog and digital communication, but also the theoretical underpinnings needed to understand them, including frequency domain analysis and probability. The book is unusual in that it also includes newer topics of pressing current relevance like multiple antenna communication and OFDM. I strongly recommend this book for faculty teaching senior level courses on communication systems.’ Jeffrey G. Andrews, University of Texas, Austin

High-dimensional and nonparametric statistical models are ubiquitous in modern data science. This book develops a mathematically coherent and objective approach to statistical inference in such models, with a focus on function estimation problems arising from random samples (density estimation) or from Gaussian regression/signal in white noise problems. ‘Finally – a book that goes all the way in the mathematics of nonparametric statistics. It is reasonably selfcontained, despite its depth and breadth, including accessible overviews of the necessary analysis and approximation theory.’ Aad van der Vaart, Leiden University Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics, 40

Optimization Models Giuseppe C. Calafiore Politecnico di Torino
and Laurent El Ghaoui University of California, Berkeley
This accessible textbook demonstrates how to recognize, simplify, model and solve optimization problems – and apply these principles to new projects. ‘In Optimization Models, Calafiore and El Ghaoui have created a beautiful and very much needed on-ramp to the world of modern mathematical optimization and its wide range of applications. They lead an undergraduate, with not much more than basic calculus behind her, from the basics of linear algebra all the way to modern optimization-based machine learning, image processing, control, and finance, to name just a few applications. Until now, these methods and topics were accessible only to graduate students in a few fields, and the few undergraduates who brave the daunting prerequisites. The book’s seamless integration of mathematics and applications, and its focus on modeling practical problems and algorithmic solution methods, will be very appealing to a wide audience.’ Stephen Boyd, Stanford University, California

The Cambridge Dictionary of Probability and its Applications David Stirzaker St John’s College, Oxford
Probability comes of age with this, the first dictionary of probability and its applications in English, which supplies a guide to the concepts and vocabulary of this rapidly expanding field. Besides the basic theory of probability and random processes, applications covered include financial and insurance mathematics, operations research (including queueing, reliability, and inventories), decision and game theory, optimization, time series, networks, and communication theory, as well as classic problems and paradoxes. The dictionary is reliable, stable, concise, and cohesive. Each entry provides a rigorous definition, a sketch of the context, and a reference pointing the reader to the wider literature. Judicious use of figures makes complex concepts easier to follow without oversimplifying. As the only dictionary on the market, this will be a guiding reference for all those working in, or learning, probability together with its applications.
