Diane Halpern, Dean of Social Sciences, Emerita, Minerva Schools at KGI and Professor of Psychology, Emerita, Claremont McKenna College “Asking a couple ‘How did you two meet?’ inevitably elicits an interesting story, and this is essentially what the editors of this volume have done by asking a group of eminent psychological scientists to talk about their love affairs with their work. The result is a set of brief but fascinating stories that not only inspire admiration of these brilliant authors but will surely lead some of today’s best students to dream of following in their footsteps.” Douglas A. Bernstein, Professor of Psychology, University of South Florida

“A wonderful book and an instant classic. In this remarkable series of essays bookended by two thought-provoking summaries, 100 eminent psychological scholars offer readers an insider’s glimpse of how to achieve scientific excellence. This superb book is a powerful reminder of the value of serendipity in scientific discovery. Psychology lovers will find the often surprising insights from our field’s premier scholars invaluable, and will have a difficult time putting the book down. Great fun and highly recommended.” Scott O. Lilienfeld, Ph.D., Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Psychology, Emory University & Editor, Clinical Psychological Science

Scient ist s Ma k i ng a Di f ferenc e

“Reading this book is like spending an afternoon chatting with some of psychology’s most prominent scholars. They talk about the significance of their work, describe how they honed their creative ideas, and offer advice for dealing with failures, adversity, and success. The authors invite us inside their laboratories and provide a rare insight into the process of making a difference.”

St e r n be rg, Fisk e a n d Foss

“In 100 autobiographical essays, psychology’s preeminent contributors reveal the roots and fruits of their famed contributions. Here are stories for posterity, from the funding barriers that challenged Thomas Bouchard’s study of reared-apart twins, to Michael Gazzaniga’s exhilaration on discovering the wonders of human split-brains, to Carol Dweck’s “mesearch” on how on how she and others could find a thriving mindset when facing obstacles. This is living history—and a great read for both psychological scientists and students.”

The Psychologist’s Companion (sixth edition) is written for students, young professionals, and even mid-career scholars. It is the most comprehensive guide available to both written and oral communication processes for academic psychologists. It covers the topics necessary for career success, including planning papers, writing papers, presenting data, evaluating one’s papers, writing grant proposals, giving talks, finding a book publisher, doing job interviews, and doing media interviews. Because the book is in its sixth edition, it is market tested for success in reaching and engaging its readers. Three special (new) pedagogical features are “Experience is the best teacher,” which draws on the authors’ personal experiences to help make the book more personalized and exciting to readers, “What’s wrong here?,” which gives readers an opportunity for active learning while they read the book, and “Give it some more thought,” which encourages readers to reflect further on what they have read. The authors have written the book in a personable and often humorous style that will keep readers engaged.

Young People’s Development and the Great Recession Uncertain Transitions and Precarious Futures Edited by Ingrid Schoon University College London

This timely volume advances the discussion of recession effects on young people’s lives by providing a better understanding of their dynamic and contextualized impact across multiple domains of youth adjustment. With a robust evidence base and cross-country comparisons, it will be relevant to social scientists and policy makers alike. Advance praise: ‘Building on Glen H. Elder Jr’s 1974 classic Children of the Great Depression, Schoon and Bynner’s volume underscores the importance for understanding human development of the concepts of agency and of linked lives in time and place. Drawing on longitudinal data from three nations, the chapters in this timely and significant work provide a unique treatment of youth development in the wake of the 2008 Great Recession and creatively advance the scholarly literatures of life-course and life-span developmental science.’ Richard M. A World of Babies Imagined Childcare Guides for Eight Societies Second edition Alma Gottlieb University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

and Judy S. DeLoache University of Virginia

This second edition of A World of Babies brings alive childcare practices in eight contemporary societies, examining the effects that immigration, globalization, war and poverty have on parenting. The book is fully revised and updated, and presented in a unique and creative format of imagined advice manuals to parents. ‘Gottlieb and DeLoache’s first edition of A World of Babies earned the right to be called a classic of anthropology. Although one might expect the second volume … to be a simple update of the same studies, Gottlieb and DeLoache have instead done the unexpected – they present an entirely new volume with seven new studies of parenting practices. Taken together, these books set the example of how anthropology, when done well, can open minds to the possibility that there is more than one way to do just about anything, including parenting. I can think of no better way to become a more thoughtful, insightful, and therefore better parent than reading both editions of A World of Babies.’ Meredith F. Small, Cornell University, New York, and author of Our Babies, Ourselves

Contents: 1. Introduction: raising a world of babies, parenting in the twenty-first century; 2. Never forget where you’re from: raising Guinean Muslim babies in Portugal; 3. From cultural revolution to childcare revolution: conflicting advice on childrearing in contemporary China; 4. A baby to tie you to place: childrearing advice from a Palestinian mother living under occupation; 5. Childrearing in the new country: advice for immigrant mothers in Israel; 6. Men and Sex provides a comprehensive yet accessible account of male sexuality, using sexual script theory to illuminate different aspects of men’s sexual behaviour. Individual chapters detail the development of sexual scripts in childhood and adolescence, cultural influences, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and transsexual behaviour, and more. Advance praise: ‘Most writers on sexuality adopt one of three possible approaches: the biological, the psychological, and the social and historical. Rarely do they meet. The genius of Philip Graham’s book is that it consciously and conscientiously uses all three approaches to illuminate in new ways the question of men and their sexualities. The result is an encyclopaedic overview of the debates, and a lively and stimulating contribution to our knowledge.’ Jeffrey Weeks, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, South Bank University, London, and author of Sexuality, 4th edition 2017 228 x 152 mm 324pp 978-1-107-18393-3 Hardback £85.00 / US$110.00 Publication June 2017 For all formats available, see

Collective Remembering Memory in the World and in the Mind Ludmila Isurin Ohio State University

Focusing on a case study of Russian collective past, this interdisciplinary study brings together historical, anthropological, and psychological approaches to show how collective memory is constructed by official producers and consumed by group members, and how individual memory affects the construction of collective memory in current and former group members. Advance praise: ‘While work on autobiographical memory has primarily focused on the individual or the self, the current work approaches this topic from a collective perspective. This notion of a ‘shared’ autobiographical memory is novel and innovative, and indeed aptly harnesses the power of the collective mind in uncovering the construction of worldviews from collective memories.’ Jeanette Altarriba, University of Albany, State University of New York 2017 228 x 152 mm 326pp 2 b/w illus. 20 tables 978-1-107-17585-3 Hardback £85.00 / US$110.00 Publication May 2017 For all formats available, see

HIGHLIGHT

From Benito Mussolini to Hugo Chavez Intellectuals and a Century of Political Hero Worship Paul Hollander University of Massachusetts, Amherst

In this provocative new book, Paul Hollander seeks to explain the appeal of dictators to idealistic intellectuals, and demonstrates the circumstances conducive to the rise of dictatorship and political hero worship. This book will appeal to readers interested in modern history, politics, and international relations. ‘The author of the classic study, Political Pilgrims, has produced a grim catalogue of the political misjudgments and myopia of Western intellectuals regarding modern dictatorships across the political spectrum. Paul Hollander is one of the key scholars who, in recent decades, have fostered a revision of our understanding of intellectuals in politics. Against the self-image of Western intellectuals as guardians of reason, human rights, social justice and liberal democracy, Hollander offers numerous examples of intellectuals, some quite distinguished, who abandoned reason for mindless admiration of dictators, ignored gross human rights violations and dismissed abundant evidence that the objects of their enthusiasm were horrific tyrants. From Benito Mussolini to Hugo Chavez is both an enduring work of scholarship and a timely warning.’ Jeffry C. The Experience and Expression of Uncertainty in Close Relationships

The Cambridge Handbook of Personal Relationships Edited by Anita L. Vangelisti

have been debated over many years and some still remain widely misunderstood. This Handbook provides an overview of these core aspects and brings together theoretical strands and developments in the theory, some of which have become pillars in the social sciences in their own right. Academics and students in the social sciences working with concepts and methods such as social identity, discursive psychology, positioning theory, semiotics, attitudes, risk perception and social values will find this an invaluable resource. ‘This Handbook provides an excellent overview of the ‘state of the art’ in social representations theory, and showcases an impressive range of recent theoretical and empirical work. It will be an essential resource for scholars wanting to pursue a genuinely social form of social psychology.’ Nicola Morant, University of Cambridge

Rutgers University, New Jersey

University of North Carolina, Greensboro

Uncertainty is an inevitable and unavoidable element of close relationships, as partners grapple with a variety of questions about the nature, status, and future of their relationships. This volume takes a comprehensive look at the causes, consequences, and management of uncertainty and proposes new directions for its conceptualization and study.

The second edition of this landmark Cambridge Handbook presents a synthesis of cutting-edge research and theory. Integrating the varying perspectives and issues addressed by researchers, theorists, and practitioners who study personal relationships, this handbook is a multidisciplinary endeavor that captures the breadth and depth of this dynamic field.

Emotional Lives Dramas of Identity in an Age of Mass Media E. Doyle McCarthy Fordham University, New York

Emotional Lives offers a cultural study of the growing importance of people’s emotions in public life, and the role of the mass media in shaping people’s relationships, identities, and emotions. The author draws examples from leisure, sports, entertainment, politics, and today’s public forms of grief and mourning. Advance praise: ‘McCarthy brilliantly develops the theme that in contemporary life we seek distinctive and intense emotion in a shared culture of ‘emotional pursuits’ that range from passionate, open expressions of emotion at sporting events, to public, collective expressions of grief. Highly recommended for all who desire a deeper understanding of the social nature of emotion.’

From Self to Social Relationships An Essentially Relational Perspective on Social Motivation Martijn van Zomeren Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands

What moves and motivates us in our lives? Martijn van Zomeren suggests it is ‘selvations’ – the feeling of changes in social relationships. This book challenges entrenched selfish views of social motivation and provides a new, integrative relational alternative. It will be of interest to psychology, sociology and anthropology scholars. ‘This is a carefully crafted and creative entry into the significant attempts of scholars to replace traditional models of individualist and atomizing psychology with accounts that place relational process at the center of our understanding. As van Zomeren forcefully argues, it is not selfgain that fundamentally motivates our actions, but the regulation of relationships. The research implications are enormous.’ Kenneth J. Up the Down Staircase of the Mind-Body Gerald C. Cupchik University of Toronto

Gerald C. Cupchik builds a bridge between science and the humanities, arguing that relations between mind and body are analogous to those between subject matter and style in art. His unified emotional phase theory encompasses reactions to meaningful life events and actions, enabling people to realize goals and adapt to challenges. ‘In this bold and timely book, Cupchik samples artworks from paleolithic to modern times, and he integrates his findings with recent theory and research on emotion. It is an ambitious undertaking, well conceived and executed. The result is a benchmark for evaluating any future investigation of the relation between art and emotion.’ James R. It will make a good read for anybody else interested in colour vision with a broad art, science or technology background or just curious.’ C. Alejandro Parraga, Perception

Critical Feeling

Language Evolution

How to Use Feelings Strategically Rolf Reber

The Windows Approach Rudolf Botha

Universitetet i Oslo

This book introduces the concept of ‘critical feeling’, which combines insights from different disciplines to address personal and societal issues.

This book addresses the question: how can we unravel the evolution of language, given that there is no direct evidence about it?

‘In 2006, Rudolf Botha launched an all out attack on the legitimacy of the claim that the South African archaeological site of Blombos had evidence of ‘fully syntactic’ language 75,000 years ago. No one has been able to counter the logic of his argument, and this book applies that same relentless, illuminating logic to other claims in the study of language origins. In doing so, Botha shows just how carefully any claims must be justified, and just how powerful his Windows Approach is. Students and researchers in archaeology, primatology, linguistics, and comparative ethology cannot ignore this book.’ Iain Davidson, University of New England

John Dewey’s Democracy and Education is the touchstone for a great deal of modern educational theory. It covers a wide range of themes and issues relating to education, including teaching, learning, educational environments, subject matter, values, and the nature of work and play. This Handbook is designed to help experts and non-experts to navigate Dewey’s text. The authors are specialists in the fields of philosophy and education; their chapters offer readers expert insight into areas of Dewey’s work that they know well and have returned to time and time again throughout their careers. The Handbook is divided into two parts. Part I features short companion chapters corresponding to each of Dewey’s chapters in Democracy and Education. These serve to guide readers through the complex arguments developed in the book. Part II features general articles placing the book into historical, philosophical and practical contexts and highlighting its relevance today. Contributors: David Hansen, Leonard J. Waks, Andrea R. with the help of interventions in workplaces, schools and communities. ‘This is a very important book. It brings together some of the most significant papers in Engeström’s archive and provides them with a new introduction and rationale. In his first chapter he also muses on the possible future of the learning sciences. This prospective view is grounded in the legacy that is so well captured and explicated in the rest of the book. It will be of great value to newcomers to the field and serves as an invaluable source of reference for those who are more familiar with the work.’ Harry Daniels, University of Oxford 2016 228 x 152 mm 288pp 42 b/w illus. 14 tables 978-1-107-10520-1 Hardback £69.99 / US$110.00 For all formats available, see

This book offers a case study of children and young people as they live, study and work within the contexts of their families, educational institutions and informal activities. The study explores how ‘learning identities’ are forged through complex interplays between young people and their communities. ‘Erstad, Gilje, Sefton-Green and their colleagues have gathered an extraordinary data set, following young people across the many contexts that make up their lives and tracing how they learn and become new types of people through linkages across domains. They offer a compelling account of how self, family, school, community and other influences together produce the trajectories of human lives as they are actually lived.’ Stanton Wortham, Boston College, Massachusetts 2016 228 x 152 mm 274pp 978-1-107-04695-5 Hardback £69.99 / US$110.00 For all formats available, see

Global Perspectives on Teacher Motivation Edited by Helen M. G. Watt Monash University, Victoria

Paul W. Richardson Monash University, Victoria

and Kari Smith Universitetet i Bergen, Norway

Many studies of teacher motivation have been conducted in different contexts over time. However, until fairly recently there has not been a reliable measure available to allow comparisons across samples and settings. This has resulted in an abundance of findings which cannot be directly compared or synthesised. The FIT-Choice instrument offers the opportunity to examine motivations across settings. The various studies in this book suggest that people who choose teaching as a career are motivated by a complex interaction of factors embedded within communities and cultural expectations, but seem generally to embrace a desire to undertake meaningful work that makes for a better society. Unlike some careers, where rewards are in the form of salary and status, by and large these factors are not strong drivers for people who want to become teachers. They want to work with children and adolescents, and believe they have the ability to teach. Contributors: Helen M. G. Watt, Paul W. Educational psychology / Health and clinical psychology Nurturing Creativity in the Classroom Second edition Edited by Ronald A. Beghetto University of Connecticut

and James C. Kaufman University of Connecticut

As interest in creativity explodes, it has become more complicated to decide how to best nurture creativity in our schools. There are the controversial Common Core Standards in many states. Meanwhile, the classroom has become increasingly digital; it is easier to access information, communicate ideas, and learn from people across the world. Many countries now include cultivating creativity as a national educational policy recommendation, yet there is still debate over best practices. Indeed, many well-intentioned educators may institute programs that may not reach the desired outcome. The notion that schools ‘kill creativity’ has become a widespread social meme. We view such beliefs as both hyperbolic and problematic: they allow us to recognize there is a problem but not solve it. In this book, a wide array of international experts addresses these issues, discussing theories and research that focus on how to nurture creativity in K-12 and college-level classrooms. It thus views identity, as also informed by a Vygotskian perspective, as a dialectical process, as both tool and outcome, one could say, and as central to all forms of semiotic mediation, thereby becoming a leading factor in human development and education, especially in today’s more ‘liquid’ or ‘networked’ society.’ Luis C. Research and Theory on Workplace Aggression Edited by Nathan A. Bowling Wright State University, Ohio

and M. Sandy Hershcovis University of Calgary

Workplace aggression is a serious problem for workers and their employers. As such, an improved scientific understanding of workplace

Applied psychology / History of psychology aggression has important implications. This volume, which includes chapters written by leading workplace aggression scholars, addresses three primary topics: the measurement, predictors and consequences of workplace aggression; the social context of workplace aggression; and the prevention of workplace aggression. Of note, the book encompasses the various labels used by researchers to refer to workplace aggression, such as ‘abusive supervision’, ‘bullying’, ‘incivility’ and ‘interpersonal conflict’. This approach differs from those of previous books on the topic in that it does not focus on a particular type of workplace aggression, but covers an intentionally broad conceptualization of workplace aggression – specifically, it considers aggression from both the aggressors’ and the targets’ perspectives and includes behaviors enacted by several types of perpetrators, including supervisors, coworkers and customers.

Histories of Human Engineering Tact and Technology Maarten Derksen Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands

This fascinating account of the histories of human engineering, from brainwashing and mind control to Dale Carnegie’s art of dealing with people, reveals the perpetual tension between the desire to control people’s behaviour and the resistance this provokes. Derksen shows that human engineering only works when applied with tact. Advance praise: ‘Reflecting his own subtlety, sensitivity and wit, Maarten Derksen crafts a persuasive analysis of the tact and technologies involved in the dealings between people and machines, brains and behaviour. Forrester and Cameron explore the transformative influence of Freud’s thinking on twentieth-century intellectual and scientific life within Cambridge and beyond. This highly original volume demonstrates the impact of Freud’s work across disciplines, from anthropology and psychology, to philosophy, literature, education and science. Advance praise: ‘Freud in Cambridge is an extraordinary and detailed account of an aspect of the British life of psychoanalysis little examined in intellectual history. Cambridge seems on its surface less rich than the London centre of psychoanalysis. Yet what Forrester and Cameron show is how extraordinarily rich this tale is … Without a doubt this is one of the most important books on twentiethcentury British intellectual history I have read in a very long time.’ Sander L. Cold War Freud Psychoanalysis in an Age of Catastrophes Dagmar Herzog City University of New York

In Cold War Freud Dagmar Herzog uncovers the astonishing array of concepts of human selfhood which circulated across the globe in the aftermath of World War II. Against the backdrop of Nazism and the Holocaust, the sexual revolution, feminism, gay rights, and anticolonial and antiwar activism, she charts the heated battles which raged over Freud’s legacy. From the postwar US to Europe and Latin America, she reveals how competing theories of desire, anxiety, aggression, guilt, trauma and pleasure emerged and were then transformed to serve both conservative and subversive ends in a fundamental rethinking of the very nature of the human self and its motivations. Her findings shed new light on psychoanalysis’ enduring contribution to the enigma of the relationship between nature and culture, and the ways in which social contexts enter into and shape the innermost recesses of individual psyches. ‘This is surely a history of the Cold War world as we did not know it, in which psychoanalytic conformists and rebels flex their way through the controversies of the era – Auschwitz, My Lai, student protests, postcolonial insurgencies, the culture of narcissism. Partly about the collapse of psychoanalysis in its bid to be the regulating body for Christian American

Scientists Making a Difference is a volume of first-person narratives from the top psychological scientists of modern times, written for students in undergraduate courses and graduate seminars. The book will also appeal to professional psychologists, scientists and scholars interested in the views of the leading figures in their field. ‘In 100 autobiographical essays, psychology’s preeminent contributors reveal the roots and fruits of their famed contributions. Here are stories for posterity, from the funding barriers that challenged Thomas Bouchard’s study of reared-apart twins, to Michael Gazzaniga’s exhilaration on discovering the wonders of human split-brains, to Carol Dweck’s ‘mesearch’ on how she and others could find a thriving mindset when facing obstacles. This is living history – and a great read for both psychological scientists and students.’ David G. Myers, Hope College, Michigan

The field of mathematical psychology began in the 1950s and includes both psychological theorizing, in which mathematics plays a key role, and applied mathematics, motivated by substantive problems in psychology. Central to its success was the publication of the first ‘Handbook of Mathematical Psychology’ in the 1960s. The psychological sciences have since expanded to include new areas of research, and significant advances have been made in both traditional psychological domains and in the applications of the computational sciences to psychology. Upholding the rigor of the first title in this field to be published, the New Handbook of Mathematical Psychology reflects the current state of the field by exploring the mathematical and computational foundations of new developments over the last half-century. This first volume focuses on select mathematical ideas, theories, and modeling approaches to form a foundational treatment of mathematical psychology. ‘This volume, the first of several, is a welcome effort to systematize the mathematical ideas and foundational issues that characterize modern

Fourth edition Edited by John T. Cacioppo Louis G. Tassinary Texas A & M University

and Gary G. Berntson Ohio State University

The Handbook of Psychophysiology has been the authoritative resource for more than a quarter of a century. Since the third edition was published a decade ago, the field of psychophysiological science has seen significant advances, both in traditional measures such as electroencephalography, event-related brain potentials, and cardiovascular assessments, and in novel approaches and methods in behavioural epigenetics, neuroimaging, psychoneuroimmunology, psychoneuroendocrinology, neuropsychology, behavioural genetics, connectivity analyses, and noncontact sensors. At the same time, a thoroughgoing interdisciplinary focus has emerged as essential to scientific progress. Emphasizing the need for multiple measures, careful experimental design, and logical inference, the fourth edition of the Handbook provides updated and expanded coverage of approaches, methods, and analyses in the field. With state-of-the-art reviews of research in topical areas such as stress, emotion, development, language, psychopathology, and behavioural medicine, the Handbook remains the essential reference for students and scientists in the behavioural, cognitive, and biological sciences. ‘The much-anticipated update to this authoritative handbook provides the comprehensive coverage we’ve come to expect from the trio of Cacioppo, Tassinary, and Berntson and the impressive roster of world-renowned contributors they’ve assembled. With pragmatic, conceptual, and cutting-edge coverage of a wide range of approaches, methods, and applications, the fourth edition of the Handbook of Psychophysiology will inspire and inform research across a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines.’ John J. Shared Representations Sensorimotor Foundations of Social Life Edited by Sukhvinder S. Obhi McMaster University, Ontario

and Emily S. Cross Bangor University

Social behaviour is heavily dependent on shared representations – information sharing between the brains of those involved. This volume comprises a collection of cutting-edge contributions centred on the idea of shared representations, and will be an invaluable resource for established researchers and those who are new to the field. ‘If you are to have one book on social cognitive neuroscience, this is it. The contributors have all made major contributions to the study of social cognition and here present, in a most engaging style, the latest work concerning the nature of shared representations. This book represents the most fruitful approach to the topic currently available.’ Chris Frith, University College London

Contents: Part I. Foundations: 1. What it takes to share a task: sharing versus shaping task representations; 2. Merged minds: integration of bottom-up and top-down processes for social interactions; 3. A new view of the motor cortex and its relation to social behaviour; 4. Beyond action: shared representations in non-motor domains; 5. Cognisance of the neuroimaging
