The Life and Death of ACT UP/LA explores the history of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, Los Angeles, part of the militant anti-AIDS movement of the 1980s and 1990s. ACT UP/LA battled government, meded protest in Los Angeles and nationally. The book shows how appealing the direct action anti-AIDS activism was for people across the United States; as well as arguing the need to understand how the politics of place affect organizing, and how the particular features of the Los Angeles cityscape shaped possibilities for activists. A feminist lens is used seeing social inequalities as mutually reinforcing and interdependent to examine the interaction of activists and the outcomes of their actions. Their struggle against AIDS and homophobia, and to have a voice in their healthcare, presaged the progressive, multi-issue, anti-corporate, confrontational organizing of the late twentieth century, and deserves to be part of that history. Benita Roth is Professor of sociology, history, and women’s studies at Binghamton University. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, social protest, race/ethnicity, and sexuality. Her first book Separate Roads to Feminism, Black, Chicana, and White Feminist Movements in America’s Second Wave (Cambridge, 2003) won the Distinguished Book Award from the Sex and Gender Section of the American Sociological Association.

DAMON MAYRL

Nolan 9781107146617 PPC. C M Y K

– Jonathan B. Imber, Wellesley College What They Saw in America is an engaging, accessible narrative. . . . The historical insights we gain form a basis for sober reflection about such topics of continuing importance as environmental degradation, rampant self-interested individualism, and militarism. – Robert J. Wuthnow, Princeton University Here is a cogent and well-written account of four visitors to the U.S., each arriving at a different period in history, who wrote about what they saw and experienced. Nolan makes the strong case that these writings, both the positive and the disparaging, allow Americans to better understand themselves; outsiders often see what we cannot. A first-rate study of American exceptionalism. – John Calvert, Creighton University

What They Saw in America

– Mark Roche, University of Notre Dame James Nolan is that rare sociologist who can weave an entirely new way of seeing and appreciating what may at first sight appear familiar. The relatively short sojourns of Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, G.K. Chesterton, and Sayyid Qutb led each to offer trenchant observations about American life. Nolan’s unique historical ethnography illuminates in these engaging vignettes the prescience of “outsiders”. They saw an America far ahead of what Americans knew then, and even today know fully about themselves. What They Saw in America is a brilliant account of an exceptionalism contested and revisited as an enduring feature of American intellectual life.

Nolan

Just as American Studies majors benefit by studying abroad, looking at America through the eyes of others, so can educated Americans benefit from seeing the country through the critical lens of foreign sojourners. In Nolan’s splendid book What They Saw in America, we learn not only about four fascinating observers of the United States, we learn–with the assistance of Nolan’s illuminating analysis–also from them.

German Cosmopolitan Social Thought and the Idea of the West Voices from Weimar Austin Harrington University of Leeds

This groundbreaking study in social theory draws on neglected sources in early twentieth-century German social thought to address core questions in current social science about the place, status and hubris of the modern West in global social and historical change. ‘This is a significant book that questions the received view about classical social theory. With considerable erudition and a careful reading of a wide range of the most important thinkers in early twentiethcentury Germany, Harrington shows that these theorists had already anticipated some of the ideas that are more commonly associated with contemporary thought. He also demonstrates that the traditional view of the decline of cosmopolitanism needs to be revisited.’ Gerard Delanty, University of Sussex 2016 228 x 152 mm 450pp 978-1-107-11091-5 Hardback £84.99 / US$135.00 For all formats available, see

The Cambridge Handbook of Social Representations Edited by Gordon Sammut University of Malta

Eleni Andreouli The Open University, Milton Keynes

George Gaskell London School of Economics and Political Science

and Jaan Valsiner Aalborg University, Denmark

A social representations approach offers an empirical utility for addressing myriad social concerns such as social order, ecological sustainability, national identity, racism, religious communities, the public understanding of science, health and social marketing. The core aspects of social representations theory have been debated over many years and some still remain widely misunderstood. This Handbook provides an overview of these core aspects and brings together theoretical strands and developments in the theory, some of which have become pillars in the social sciences in their own right. Academics and students in the social sciences working with concepts and methods such as social identity, discursive psychology, positioning theory, semiotics, attitudes, risk perception and social values will find this an invaluable resource. ‘This Handbook provides an excellent overview of the ‘state of the art’ in social representations theory, and showcases an impressive range of recent theoretical and empirical work. It will be an essential resource for scholars wanting to pursue a genuinely social form of social psychology.’ Nicola Morant, University of Cambridge

From Self to Social Relationships An Essentially Relational Perspective on Social Motivation Martijn van Zomeren Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands

What moves and motivates us in our lives? Martijn van Zomeren suggests it is ‘selvations’ – the feeling of changes in social relationships. This book challenges entrenched selfish views of social motivation and provides a new, integrative relational alternative. It will be of interest to psychology, sociology and anthropology scholars. ‘This is a carefully crafted and creative entry into the significant attempts of scholars to replace traditional models of individualist and atomizing psychology with accounts that place relational process at the center of our understanding. As van Zomeren forcefully argues, it is not selfgain that fundamentally motivates our actions, but the regulation of relationships. The research implications are enormous.’ Kenneth J. From Benito Mussolini to Hugo Chavez Intellectuals and a Century of Political Hero Worship Paul Hollander University of Massachusetts, Amherst

In this provocative new book, Paul Hollander seeks to explain the appeal of dictators to idealistic intellectuals, and demonstrates the circumstances conducive to the rise of dictatorship and political hero worship. This book will appeal to readers interested in modern history, politics, and international relations. Advance praise: ‘The author of the classic study, Political Pilgrims has produced

a grim catalogue of the political misjudgments and myopia of Western intellectuals regarding modern dictatorships across the political spectrum. Paul Hollander is one of the key scholars who, in recent decades, have fostered a revision of our understanding of intellectuals in politics. Against the self-image of Western intellectuals as guardians of reason, human rights, social justice, and liberal democracy, Hollander offers numerous examples of intellectuals, some quite distinguished, who abandoned reason for mindless admiration of dictators, ignored gross human rights violations, and dismissed abundant evidence that the objects of their enthusiasm were horrific tyrants. Communal Violence, Forced Migration and the State Gujarat since 2002 Sanjeevini Badigar Lokhande Department of Civics and Politics, University of Mumbai

This book examines the notion of citizenship for Muslims who were displaced after the Godhra violence in Gujarat in 2002. Sanjeevini Badigar Lokhande addresses the migrationdisplacement debate by chronicling what happened and seeks to locate the rights

Political sociology claims of the displaced in the dominant debates on citizenship. ‘It is often said that a state must be judged by how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable populations. This account of the aftermath of the Gujarat pogrom in 2002 is a powerful and well-documented indictment of the dark underside of the much-heralded development state of Gujarat. Focusing on the fate and living conditions of the hundreds of thousands displaced by the pogrom, Sanjeevini Badigar Lokhande paints a disturbing picture of systematic neglect, paltry compensations and daily humiliations of displaced Muslims by state officials. Her meticulous research shows that the cruelties of the pogrom was followed by another kind of violence – structural, slow, callous and indifferent. Environmental and Nuclear Networks in the Global South How Skills Shape International Cooperation Isabella Alcañiz University of Maryland, College Park

For decades, expert bureaucrats have been moving regularly across borders, from their home institutions to international organizations, and forging collaborative networks with peers. Using an extensive empirical study from across over 150 developing countries, this is a key contribution in explaining international cooperation among elite bureaucrats in developing states. ‘Environmental and Nuclear Networks in the Global South: How Skills Shape International Cooperation is an indispensable book for furthering our understanding of technocratic bureaucracies and transnational policy networks. It provides important contributions to comparative political economy, while reshaping the study of environmental and NEST cooperation in the Global South. Moreover, its research design offers an excellent example of scholarly work based on mixed methods by combining the qualitative evidence gathered in numerous in-depth elite interviews with the quantitative results generated by complex social network analysis.’ Maria Victoria Murillo, Columbia University, New York 2016 228 x 152 mm 230pp 7 b/w illus. 5 colour illus. 10 tables 978-1-107-15011-9 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

HIGHLIGHT

The Roots of Dishonesty Edited by Jan-Willem van Prooijen

State University of New York, Buffalo

and Paul A. M. van Lange

This book is the first systematic study of the causes and consequences of legislative party switching in the United States. It provides a sophisticated analysis combining quantitative data from Congress and state legislatures with elite interviews with switchers, nonswitchers, and a party leader, including a ‘real time’ look into the decision.

Political sociology Force and Contention in Contemporary China Memory and Resistance in the Long Shadow of the Catastrophic Past Ralph A. Thaxton, Jr Brandeis University, Massachusetts

This book is about how memories of Mao era suffering, particularly memories of suffering and loss in the Great Leap Forward Famine, have seeped into the present day post-Mao reform period to shape the way in which rural famine survivors see and resist state power and injustice today. ‘Ralph A. Thaxton, Jr is one of the finest scholars of modern China working today. His forensic attention to the story of Da Fo village, which this excellent study continues, illustrates the universal in the particular. He works with themes involving memory, struggle, power, and resistance which, while intimately linked to an understanding of the development of rural China from the late 1950s onwards and their resonance right up to the present, deploy a rich and diverse menu of intellectual resources and tools to make sense of the unique and often traumatic pathway that individuals traveled over this time. An extraordinary achievement, which is in parts inspiring, stimulating, and, in the end, deeply moving. Whoever reads this and his other studies will view Chinese history and politics, and the myriads of lives of which it has been constituted, with fresh eyes. A masterful and masterly account that deserves the widest possible audience.’ Kerry Brown, Director, Lau China Institute, King’s College London

Sociology of religion Salafism in Jordan Political Islam in a Quietist Community Joas Wagemakers Universiteit Utrecht, The Netherlands

For students and researchers of Middle Eastern politics and Salafism, Wagemakers explores how and why quietist Salafism in Jordan – through ideological tendencies, foreign developments, internal conflicts, regime involvement, theological challenges and regional turmoil – evolved from an independent movement into a politically domesticated one. ‘A comprehensive and in-depth study about Salafism. Through the Jordanian paradigm, Joas Wagemakers’ book goes as deep as possible in understanding the dynamics of ‘Salafism’ as a whole – its inner debates, its main theological and political issues, the histories of those who embody its main expression. It is a much-needed contribution to the understanding of a worldwide phenomenon, raising the issue of differences and commonalities between ‘quietist’ and ‘jihadi’ Salafism – and the possible crossovers between the two.’ Bernard Rougier, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3 2016 228 x 152 mm 314pp 978-1-107-16366-9 Hardback £64.99 / US$99.99 For all formats available, see

Secular Conversions Political Institutions and Religious Education in the United States and Australia, 1800–2000 Damon Mayrl Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

This book shows how campaigns for more or less secular policies in education were shaped by their interactions with the state throughout American and Australian history. In so doing, it explains how and why religion comes to be embraced or excluded from public life. ‘Secular Conversions leaps beyond overly general secularization debates to demonstrate how specific institutional conditions and political processes have shaped quite different accommodations of religion and education in two modern nation-states. This tour de force of comparative sociological history should inspire new ways of engaging one of the central contradictions

Criminology TEXTBOOK

Language and the Law Linguistic Inequality in America Douglas A. Kibbee University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

This book explores how linguistic inequality affects the basic concepts of democracy, justice and fairness in the United States. It will interest sociolinguists working on language policy, students and scholars of ethnic studies, and legal scholars exploring how language issues intersect with the law. ‘There is no doubt that this collection will be useful to lawyers and other supporters of rights, as well as to students of language policy and management study of the slow progress of legal recognition in the United States of non-English language rights. It covers in considerable detail most of the important cases and decisions as the system has gradually (and perhaps reluctantly) recognized the way that failure to allow for minority language patterns has

Criminology contributed to the kinds of inequality more usually associated with race, gender, and the income gap.’

HIGHLIGHT

Incarceration Nation How the United States Became the Most Punitive Democracy in the World Peter K. Enns Cornell University, New York

The rise of mass incarceration in the United States is one of the most critical outcomes of the last half-century. Incarceration Nation offers the most compelling explanation of this outcome to date. This book combines in-depth analysis of Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon’s presidential campaigns with sixty years of data analysis. The result is a sophisticated and highly accessible picture of the rise of mass incarceration. In contrast to conventional wisdom, Peter K. Enns shows that during the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, politicians responded to an increasingly punitive public by pushing policy in a more punitive direction. The book also argues that media coverage of rising crime rates helped fuel the public’s punitiveness. Equally as important, a decline in public punitiveness in recent years offers a critical window into understanding current bipartisan calls for criminal justice reform. ‘Did Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater, and other elected officials generate the ‘tough on crime’ political attitudes that led to the rapid rise

in incarceration beginning in the 1970s? Or was it a more general trend reflecting shifting media portrayals of crime and powerful forces in public opinion? In this path-breaking and rigorous analysis, Peter K. Enns answers these questions. … he also gives cause for hope that, with shifting public understandings of the nature of crime and the appropriate response to it, our long national infatuation with incarceration may have already come to an end. It is a methodological tour de force, of interest not only to those concerned with criminal justice, but also to those interested in a more general question: what is, and should be, the role of public opinion in determining public policy outcomes in a democracy?’ Frank R. What They Saw in America Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, G. K. Chesterton, and Sayyid Qutb James L. Nolan, Jr Williams College, Massachusetts

Through the journeys of four foreign visitors – Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, G. K. Chesterton and Sayyid Qutb – this book provides an intriguing perspective on America. It will be used in advanced undergraduate courses and graduate seminars dealing with foreign intellectuals’ observations of America, American studies, political science and sociology. ‘Tocqueville strikingly observed that Americans live in ‘perpetual adoration’ of themselves and that ‘only foreigners or experience can make certain truths reach their ears.’ These remarks, quoted at the beginning of James L. The Cambridge Handbook of the Psychology of Prejudice Edited by Chris G. Sibley University of Auckland

and Fiona Kate Barlow University of Queensland

The Cambridge Handbook of the Psychology of Prejudice aims to answer the following questions: why is prejudice so persistent? How does it affect people exposed to it? What can we do about it? Providing a comprehensive examination of prejudice from its evolutionary beginnings and environmental influences through to its manifestations and consequences, this Handbook is an essential resource for scholars and students who are passionate about understanding prejudice, social

Sociology (general) change, collective action, and prejudice reduction. Featuring cutting-edge research from top scholars in the field, the chapters provide an overview of psychological models of prejudice; investigate prejudice in specific domains such as race, religion, gender, and appearance; and develop explicit, evidence-based strategies for disrupting the processes that produce and maintain prejudice. This Handbook challenges researchers and readers to move beyond their comfort zone, and sets the agenda for future avenues of research, policy, and intervention. ‘Sibley and Barlow’s comprehensive volume includes an impressive array of cutting-edge theory and research on prejudice from the major scholars in the field. In addition to the usual gender- and race-based prejudice, their authors address heterosexism, fat oppression, and religious prejudice.’ Kristin J. Anderson, University of Houston, Downtown

‘We all want to end world poverty and misery. However, who is this ‘we,’ and who put us in charge? This brilliant volume shows how the humanitarian movement, despite progress against the old racism and colonialism, remains too often oblivious to who has the power and who does not. As a result, it argues, paternalism is alive and well. The logic of humanitarian action can overwhelm the best of anti-paternalist intentions. The volume offers no easy answers but it will leave the reader with a greatly enriched understanding of the values of dignity and autonomy for every individual everywhere.’ William Easterly, New York University
