Established in 1870, Cambridge Center for Adult Education is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Harvard Square. We provide exceptional handson multidisciplinary educational classes, from art and cooking, to theater and life & wellness, to languages and literature. We welcome students from all walks of life to join us to expand your worldview, develop your professional skill set, take up a new hobby, or simply to have fun and make new friends in a community of life-long learners.

COOKING

BASIC CULINARY SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES

Dagmar Smith | Chef, Graduate: Cambridge School of Culinary Arts

This class is for students who want to develop classic cooking skills that will help them understand recipes as well as how to confidently improvise in the kitchen. The class covers essential knife skills, cuts of meat, where to shop, and kitchen equipment. The first two nights will emphasize learning how to use knives effectively. Each night of this hands-on cooking class, students will make a complete meal from appetizer to dessert. Recipes will include: baked salmon, rice pilaf, oven roasted vegetables, BBQ braised chicken, chocolate chip cookies, chili, shredded salad, many muffins, pan seared sirloin steak and much more. This class is best suited for beginner cooks.

BASIC KNIFE SKILLS

Honing your knife skills is the most important way to finesse your artistry in the kitchen. Through a combination of demonstration and class practice, you will learn how to chop, dice, and slice like a pro. Students will learn cutting techniques for a variety of different vegetables and will practice with guidance from the instructor. You’ll also learn about sharpening your knife, the many different types of knives and their applications, as well as general knife care.

COOKING WITH CAST IRON

Cast iron skillets are one of the chef’s favorite cookware because of its unparalleled heat retention and non-stick properties. Students will learn how to optimize temperature when cooking a variety of proteins and vegetables, including salmon, steak, eggs, and potatoes. We’ll talk about different types of cast iron pans and how to buy, use, maintain, and — most importantly — season them.

Across China, there are many ways to make noodles, but the distinct, toothsome chew from fresh noodles cannot be beaten. Hand-pulled noodles, as the name suggests, are made with wheat dough that is rolled and stretched by hand into long strips and then cooked immediately after pulling. Chef Jade will guide you through all of the essential tips and techniques to create these comforting and craveable noodles at home. We’ll load the noodles with flavor by turning them into a savory Chinese beef stew and spicy vegetarian Dan Dan noodles.

Join Jade for a traditional Chinese dumpling feast where we’ll pinch, squeeze, and pleat our way to a succulent and satisfying meal. We will make traditional boiled dumplings served with soy dipping sauces and pan-fry others for crispy potstickers. Using pork, Napa cabbage, Chinese chives, & seafood, we’ll make various traditional fillings from scratch. Enjoy a dumpling feast in this introductory class and take home the rest.

SUSHI FOR BEGINNERS

We’ll have fun creating this art of rolling in this hands-on class. You will learn every step from making sushi rice and cutting sushi components. We’ll talk about the history of culture behind this long Japanese tradition while we roll out three styles of sushi maki including futomaki, spicy salmon maki, and temaki (hand-rolled sushi). Each student will roll and cut your own sushi. Students will get a sushi rolling mat to go home with. Take-home containers and step-by-step recipes will be provided.

VEGETARIAN/VEGAN THAI COOKING

Thai restaurants have become wildly popular in the United States, and yet cooking Thai street food at home can be a challenge — especially for vegetarians. Join Ploy, a native Thai who will teach you the skills and authentic recipes to recreate your vegetarian Thai dishes at home. You’ll also learn about where to shop locally for the freshest ingredients. In this class, we’ll make Thai spicy salad, coconut lemongrass soup, and pad Thai. A gluten-free option is available. While the food is cooking, Ploy will show you how palm sugar and coconut milk have been made in Thailand and how we use all parts of coconut trees from roots to fruits in our daily life.

Make your next dinner a blast with small delicious dishes inspired by Izakaya, the sake-house, after-work, tradition. In this hands-on class, you will learn how to make exquisite Japanese chicken skewers with homemade teriyaki sauce, Japanese dumpling potstickers (gyoza), agedashi tofu, and green beans with sesame dressing. Enjoy the small dishes with a glass of sake.

Spend the morning making the puff pastry dough

— take a break with an included lunch while we let the dough rest — and spend the afternoon creating flaky pastries — what could be a better way to spend a Summer day. What to expect..... The morning will be spent preparing the dough. Hands on practicing techniques including preparing the dough, the butter block, rolling the paton, the different types of folds for the paton. During your lunch break (lunch is included during the one hour break), your dough will be resting. In the afternoon you will make the following pastries…. Mille Feuille, Cheese Straws, and Kouign Amann. CARAMEL RASPBERRY DOME CAKE WITH MIRROR GLAZE

Adapted from a Lilis (lilliscakes.com) recipe, it is elegant yet uncomplicated! Although it has many components it is relatively simple to make. The dome of creamy caramel mousse is filled with a fresh raspberry jelly insert and covered in a light caramel glaze. Set on base of crumbly Sablé Breton (Brittany salted butter shortbread) it is decorated with fragments of homemade pralines (caramelized almonds), which line the sides like crunchy jewels. What to expect…. The class includes both demonstration and participation culminating with assembling your very own creation to take home. What better way to celebrate summer than with two classic summer tarts - a Tarte aux Fruits Frais avec Crème Pâtissière and a Tarte au Citron! What to expect…. You will make: a Pâte Sucrée pastry dough to use for both tarts. For the Fruit Tart - a crème pâtissière and a glaze to give the fruit a classic professional shine. For the Tarte au Citron - a lemon curd. French macarons are a delicious sweet treat with a reputation of being difficult to make. In this class you will dispel the mystery and learn how to make the popular Pistachio Macaron with Pistachio Creme filling. These delicate and colorful almond confectioneries can be a sweet ending to a meal or just a snack. What to expect…. In this class you will be making the macaron shells and participating in a demonstration of how to make the Pistachio Creme including Pistachio Paste. You’ll practice step-bystep techniques on how to make the macaron shells including whipping the meringue to the right consistency, perfecting the macaronage, piping and baking. You will then fill the cooled shells with a delicious Pistachio Creme. A PICNIC IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE COUNTRYSIDE

If you can’t be in the South of France on July 13th join us for a fun filled and instructive experience! Learn how to prepare an authentic South of France Picnic. Included are various olives, cheeses, and fruits; a Tapenade and a Tomatade spreads on freshly baked Baguettes; a bright Salade Provinciale de Pois Chiches (Chickpea Salad) and a colorful Salade de Campagne Française avec Vinaigrette au Citron et à Dijon (French Country Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette Dressing). Main dishes include a classic Pissaladière and a tempting Tarte au Chèvre. Save room for dessert — a Gâteau à l’orange (orange Cake) and don’t forget a bottle of the Bubbly or maybe a chilled Rosé! DATE NIGHT: A TASTE OF SOUTHERN SPAIN

Luis de Haro | Spanish Cuisine Expert, Chef Come join Chef Luis de Haro and spend time with your beloved one cooking a delicious meal from Southern Spain. You’ll learn all about the authentic dishes and flavors of one of the most fascinating culinary regions. We’ll start with Antonia’s Salmorejo (creamy gazpacho from Cordoba), Pipirana de Jaen (julienne of vegetables lightly marinated in extra virgin olive oil, egg yolk & sherry vinegar from Jaen), Chorizo al Vino Tinto (chorizo in red wine from Seville), and Ajo Colorao (red garlic fish stew from Almeria). our wines are D.o. from Spain and will finish with orange olive oil Tortes from Seville and Cinnamon Ice Cream. Friends, family, and food are a way of life in Spain and nothing signifies that better than classic tapas — little bites with big flavor! Learn how to make regional tapas including Gambas al Ajillo (garlic shrimp with sherry, parsley & olive oil), Stuffed Piquillos (fire roasted peppers with bonito tuna & capers), Tortilla Espanola Classica, six month-aged Manchego cheese with all natural quince from Cordoba, and Chorizo a la Sidra (chorizo cooked in cider). We’ll pair the tapas with authentic homemade sangria and end the night with Spanish Flan.

Madrid Spain is home to many vegetarian restaurants. Most tapas bars offer vegetarian tapas and some dishes are naturally vegetarian. In this class, we’ll learn various types of vegetarian tapas including, 6-month-aged Manchego cheese with Cordoba quince, classic Tortilla Espanola-paisana with exotic vegetables, our goat cheese tapa with caramelized onion, and sauteed mushrooms al ajillo (garlic) in XVoo and Spain sherry. We’ll also make the old-fashioned way classic Pisto Manchego from the land of Don Quixote. Tapas will be served with authentic sangria. A classic and easyt-to-make Spanish Flan will top our vegetarian parade.

THE PERFECT COCKTAIL PARTY

Denise Blumenthal | Founder, Kitchen Coach; A Guide By Your Side What’s the perfect cocktail party? Food that wows, doesn’t require difficult recipes, can be made ahead (or even purchased), and is filling enough to serve as dinner. Add an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks along with a signature cocktail and you have the makings of a great party. In this class we’ll make some real crowd pleasers — from everyone’s favorite hot artichoke dip, to figs wrapped in prosciutto, to an elegant (and simple) charcuterie board and more. We’ll review how to set up a bar and learn to make mojitos for a crowd. You’ll leave with recipes and tips for your next party.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite meal before a battle, Chicken Marengo was said to be the creation of his personal chef when the army had moved too fast for their supply wagons. Told to improvise, the chef foraged among the local farms and created a stew of chicken, peppers, onions, truffles, and a wine sauce, served over a butters baguette, topped with a fried egg, and garnished with a scampi. Each layer presents a different combination of flavors and textures to make a meal fit for an emperor.

The food of the Norse lands was influenced by the short growing season and their flourishing overseas trade. The Danes and Scandinavians imported fruits and vegetables from across Europe, to supplement their fish, grain and livestock. In this class, we will make a meal of Viking-style goose stew, wheat frumenty with cheese—a porridge with greens and cheese, and lingonberry bread in a bag.

The food of South Africa reflects the unique location and mix of people, at the confluence of the Atlantic and Indian oceans, where African, English, Dutch, and Cape Malay cuisines blend. In this class, we will make denningvleis, a savory stew; gold rice, an Indian-influenced side dish; chakalaka, a carrot curry from Lesotho; and malva pudding, a signature sauced cake from South Africa.

MAKING PASTA FROM SCRATCH

Diane Manteca | Private Chef, Culinary Instructor once you learn how to make fresh pasta from scratch you’ll never go back. Chef Diane will guide you through various flours and different hydrations for making pasta. We’ll cut different styles of long and short pasta with a pasta machine or by hand and also cover filled pasta, including different styles of ravioli. We’ll also make roasted pepper cream sauce and Italian marinara to serve with our fresh pasta and discuss how to buy a machine and take care of it.

Join Ploy, a certified tea master to explore the history, processing techniques, and culture of different artisan teas with food. In the second half of the class, while learning about steeping techniques, we will taste various artisan teas with delicious food to experience and appreciate the culture and craftsmanship..

HISTORICAL TOUR AND PIZZA IN NORTH END

This historical tour is as much about history as it is about pizza. We’ll learn about the history of the North End and wind up sampling pizza from three of the best pizza restaurants. We’ll talk about history from the 17th century by visiting many sites within the one square mile of the neighborhood. The tour will convene on Cross Street between Hanover and Salem Streets. The tuition includes the cost of pizza, taxes, tip, and admission fee to the old North Church. The instructor will send a welcome information package via email one day prior to the class.

HISTORICAL TOUR & DINNER IN CHINATOWN

Let’s spend the afternoon strolling through Boston’s Chinatown. We will be visiting many different locations and retail establishments during the tour such as dim sum, BBQ, Pho, hot pot, noodle shops, as well as restaurants of various cuisines. We will also stop by bakeries, bubble tea shops, herbal medicine shops, live poultry markets, grocery stores, and a ginseng coop, all while discussing the history and architecture of Boston’s Chinatown. This will not be a tasting tour, rather, during the last stop, we’ll enjoy a delicious meal together. Please see the section description for the meeting point. Broadsheet Coffee Roasters

Making the perfect cup of coffee is no accident. Join the Broadsheet Coffee Roasters team in an immersive home brewing class hosted in their roastery and training lab. You’ll learn about what factors most affect the brewing process, why they matter, and will then apply this knowledge with hands-on practice across multiple brewing methods. Attendees will leave with helpful tips on how to thoughtfully taste and store coffee, tried-and-true brewing recipes, and solid advice for troubleshooting while brewing at home.

DRINK MAPS IN VICTORIAN BRITAIN:

MAP HISTORY AND BEER TASTING

Take a journey through drunken Victorian Britain told through maps made to convince law makers to turn off the flow of alcohol. A drink map may sound like a pub guide, yet it refers to a type of map designed to promote sobriety by shocking and shaming people into drinking less. Did these lovely temperance tools inspire zealous anger — or did they just make people thirsty? Admire many beautiful examples while tasting beers that inspired their creation. The instructor’s book, Drink Maps in Victorian England, will be available for purchase with a discount on the day of this course. (Book not required)

SUMMER COCKTAILS WITH SPARKLING AND STILL WINES

You don’t need high-proof and expensive spirits to mix up show-stopping cocktails. In this class we’ll make delicious wine cocktails using moderately priced sparkling and still wines, as well as fruits, juices and other spirits. The cocktails will include a classic sparkling wine cocktail made with bitters, a variation on a Royal Kir, an elderberry flavored Hugo, a strawberry Frosé, plus assorted wine fizzes made with interesting amoros, still wines and fruit.

Arabic today exists in multiple overlapping yet distinct varieties. In published writing and formal contexts (e.g., articles, novels, religious texts, presentations of news or information), people use Modern Standard Arabic. At the same time, there are several different regional varieties (also called dialects) that people use primarily in conversational and informal contexts (e.g., greetings, family and social life, daily communication, social media posts).

Levantine Arabic is the regional variety of Arabic used by speakers from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria and is the native language to more than 44 million people. Furthermore, it is considered one of the most widely understood varieties across the Arabic-speaking world because of the large amount of media (songs, TV series, etc.) produced in it. Levantine Arabic shares with other varieties of Arabic many fundamental grammar structures and a large amount of vocabulary.

No work of art is more enjoyable, multi-dimensional, and mysterious than Mikhail Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita (1029-1940). A novel within a novel, it was conceived as a simple satire, a payback at the critics and censors who were hounding Bulgakov and keeping his work out of print. ODYSSEY OF ANCIENT CLASSICS: OVID’S METAMORPHOSES

The Metamorphoses is made up of dozens of interlocking myths, each involving a metamorphosis (transformation) in some way. ovid’s telling of these myths has inspired innumerable works of visual art and literature in the more than 2000 years since he wrote it. In this class, we will read his work in translation and discover some of the art and literature inspired by his work. 2023 brought us two new translations of ovid’s Metamorphoses, both of which attend to ovid’s depiction of sexual violence in new ways. We will pay special attention to the ways in which these newer translations differ from older ones.

THE IMAGE IN ISLAMIC ART

A common (mis)conception in the popular understanding of Islamic art is that Islam prohibits figural representations. Islamic art is more commonly associated with aniconic or abstract motifs, such as geometric designs or floral and vegetal patterns. However, the history of Islamic art abounds with representations of people and animals in a variety of contexts and media, from erotic frescoes to religious miniature paintings. So where does the idea of Islam as an aniconic tradition come from, and what is the evidence to the contrary? This course will discuss the tensions and debates over the image in Islamic art since the birth of Islam, as well as present the rich diversity of figural representation across the history and geography of the Islamic world.

MOVING FROM TALK TO ACTION — PART 1

While this five-session workshop welcomes participants of all identities, its focus is on racism as a system that White people created, maintain, and condone — and White people have a responsibility to dismantle. The workshop will take participants beyond the headlines to impart an antiracist worldview that will infuse every aspect of participants’ lives when hearts are open to it. In this group setting you will: Examine the role of White people in dismantling racism, in becoming antiracist, and in building an equitable society. Explore the impact of White privilege and how being unaware of that advantage helps perpetuate racism. Write about your own racial awareness journey. Enhance your understanding and capacity for action through discussion of short readings, videos, and other materials. Share everyday racism-related situations where you may not have effectively responded and, using role plays, work out effective ways to challenge racism. Develop a specific plan for challenging racism in the workplace, an organization, or in the community, while being encouraged to find other people in your life who can provide support and serve as an accountability partner in implementing your plan. TAKING IT OFF: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN BURLESQUE

Burlesque was a major form of American popular entertainment for many years, but until recently it was almost entirely ignored by cultural historians. This course examines the history of burlesque from its 19th-century beginnings to its decline and fall in the 1960s. We will look at the basics of the form, the lives of some of the great strippers, the comedians, the economics of the business, recent presentations of classic burlesque in film and other media, and the hard, gritty realities that lay behind burlesque’s sexy image.

ANCIENT COINS AND THE DISCOVERY OF MONEY

Why was coined money invented? Why did it develop the way it did? Why is coinage important for the study of history? The course will offer answers by introducing students to the study of numismatics, focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on the coinage that ancient Greek and Roman societies produced. We will discuss the cultural, political, and economic factors that led to the creation of the technology of coinage to better understand how the idea of money developed over time. In the process, we will look at how politicians, playwrights, and philosophers grappled with this new form of currency that threatened to upend cultural norms, social hierarchies, and the political status quo. We will also visit the coin collections in the Harvard Museum of Fine Arts and will discuss the impact of the discovery of money across and beyond the Mediterranean.

This course examines the ways in which 20th century Chinese artists have shaped individual and national identities through a new medium: print and advertisements. We will follow the production of print culture from cigarette advertisements, calendar posters, and propaganda art through the lens of China’s intellectual, modernization, and political movements. FORGOTTEN WOMEN ARTISTS

Until quite recently, major museums and art historians seemed to exclude or minimize the contributions that women artists have made, except for a few stars. Women artists were not considered important enough to include in exhibits and scholarly works. Fortunately, this has changed during the last few years. This course will give us an opportunity to learn about some of these neglected women artists. We will begin with the seventeenth century and work our way to the twenty-first century. We will meet interesting but neglected artists, such as Hilma af Klint, Camille Claudel, Vanessa Bell, Méret oppenheim, and Elaine de Kooning. Illumination describes the art of decorating manuscripts through the application of gold or silver giving the impression that the page had been literally illuminated. The repetitive, symmetrical, geometric patterns often make use of plant motifs, called Arabesque. In Persian and Islamic art these patterns are often used to represent nature and objects through a more spiritual lens, not their physical and material qualities. Arabesque patterns are used in many forms of arts, like architecture, weaving, ceramics, woodworking, and book covers. As we have learned in the previous course, Arabesque (Islimi & Khatai) is a style of decoration with precise geometric shapes and stylized foliated patterns abstracted from nature with recurring harmonies, tendrils, and mazes. In this class we will concentrate on more complex motifs creating more sophisticated designs, used in various architectural decorations including gildings, book illustrations, and delicate miniature paintings. Also, we will learn how to apply gold (in the form of plated imitation gold leaf or form of a high quality, highly pigmented gold paint), as gold was used for decorative purposes in ancient manuscripts as a way of rendering light for elevating the holy books and paintings.

Develop knowledge, respect, and skill with hand and power tools through completing individual woodworking projects with a mentor. In order to introduce various tools, woods, joinery, and sound construction techniques, typically you will make a Shaker-style table — or you can choose a modest project of your own if you have relevant experience — and begin to understand the finer details of woodworking, including tending to and sharpening your tools. INTRO TO CYANOTYPE

In this one session intensive workshop, we will learn about the process of making cyanotypes. Sometimes referred to as sun prints or blueprints, cyanotype is a 19th century photographic printing process that uses UV light to create a cyan blue print. Students will learn about the history of the process, as well as learn to coat paper and expose prints. We will use both the sun and indoor sources of UV light. STITCHED INDIGO SHIBORI WORKSHOP

Join us to learn about the traditional Japanese art form of Stitched Indigo Shibori. We’ll use natural dye from the Indigo plant and explore different stitch sizes and rhythms working in the single fabric layer, as well as pleats and folds to create unique patterns. You’ll learn traditional techniques, including ori-Nui, Mokume, Maki-Age, Karamatsu, and Maki-Nui. We’ll use cotton tea towels, but you can bring other light-colored garments made of natural fibers. You will leave this workshop with not only your creations but a strong technique base and a passion for continuing to create with this traditional Japanese art form.

INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL DYES

In this workshop, participants learn fiber scouring, mordant application, and natural dyeing processes. Students learn how to prepare natural dyes using foraged and readily available materials. We follow chemical formulas to create rich color profiles. Additionally, the course provides reading materials to compliment the natural dyeing techniques used. Students learn shibori and resist dyeing to experiment with textile developments in this introductory summer workshop.

Contemporary dance teaches students how to connect musicality and technique. Artistry and individuality will be highlighted as a through-line in each class; students will learn how to express emotions through contemporary dance and music. Each class will start with floor work, warm-up, and across-the-floor combinations and end with choreography that may carry over multiple weeks. HIP-HOP WITH TYH

Tyh the Dancer leads a dynamic hip-hop class. Starting with a warm-up, we check in with our bodies and establish a solid mind-body connection. Next, isolations, stretch, and conditioning set the tone for style. Then, we warm up to the space with some across-the-floor travel steps, including but not limited to animal walks that transition to choreography. The combination is then drilled, and we perform it for each other in groups. This allows everyone to enjoy the dance from both perspectives: audience and dancer. After this, we cool down and check out with a cipher circle that will enable us to safely play with what we learned in class to build confidence in our style with hip-hop as the foundation. As a result, we know more about hip-hop dance history and technique each week, from locking to popping to breaking.

FULL BODY MASSAGE TECHNIQUES WITH A PARTNER

Up your game! Each session of these tennis workshops for new and continuing students will focus on the basic tennis strokes: forehand, backhand, volley, and overhead/serve. Through drills, exercises, and actual games, we will sharpen your skills, knowledge of rules, and strategies for a comprehensive tennis experience. BEGINNER BICYCLE REPAIR CLINIC

Learn the essentials of bicycle repair and maintenance. This hands-on class will teach you how to fix a flat, adjust gears and brakes, clean and lubricate critical components and perform routine bicycle maintenance. We can cover other topics based on the interest of the group. Tools and other materials will be provided. Just bring your bicycle and a desire to learn. This class meets at CCAE in Cambridge. Students are responsible for bringing their own bike.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AUTO REPAIR

Join an experienced mechanic and instructor who can make all things automotive both fun and clear. We’ll cover basic maintenance and troubleshooting ignition, charging, cooling, fluids, electrical, brakes, and exhaust systems. We’ll discuss common problems encountered with any vehicle. You’ll be better able to diagnose problems, perform basic maintenance, and deal competently and knowledgeably with local mechanics. Please note: This is a lecture and demonstration class.

PUBLIC SPEAKING WORKSHOP

In this workshop class, you’ll have the opportunity to present both impromptu and prepared speeches, followed by in-depth comments and discussion. We’ll look at body language, speech organization, and methods to build excitement and curiosity among your listeners. Most importantly, we’ll have fun in a supportive and encouraging environment. DESIGNING YOUR RETIREMENT: A BLUEPRINT FOR FULFILLMENT

Join us for an enlightening 1.5-hour class that addresses a critical, yet often overlooked aspect of retirement planning: how to meaningfully spend your time during your golden years. Statistics reveal that up to half of those nearing retirement lack a concrete plan for this phase of life, potentially leading to a less fulfilling retirement with more adverse health consequences. In this class, Dr. Hayward Zwerling introduces a comprehensive approach, based on clinical studies and expert opinion, which will empower you with the knowledge to design a retirement that will be happier, healthier and more fulfilling. This lecture will not discuss the financial aspects of retirement.

COLD-PROCESS SOAP MAKING

Learn to make cold-process soap from scratch using vegetable oils and lye. You’ll pick up the basics while making a batch of honey-oatmeal soap, and then experiment with colors and fragrances. We’ll discuss proper usage and storage of lye, mixing lye and water, oils for soap making, fragrance oils, essential oils, superfatting, additives and exfoliants, coloring, molding, and curing. A $30 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

Register early!

CCAE reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment or other considerations. We begin cancelling classes with low enrollment up to 10 days before a class is scheduled to start, so register as early as possible in order to reserve your seat and help it meet the minimum enrollment.

Please note: Students must be at least 18 years old to register for a class at CCAE, unless the class is specifically listed as one for an adult with a child.

Registration fees

An $8 registration term fee is charged for any class whose tuition exceeds $25. only one registration fee is charged per person per term. The registration fee is not refundable if you withdraw from a class. The fee is refunded if CCAE cancels your class or if changes to the class schedule prevent you from attending. This does not apply to individual classes rescheduled due to inclement weather or other significant factors beyond CCAE’s control.

Withdrawing from a class

If you withdraw seven days or more before the start date of a class, we will issue you a class credit (valid for 18 months from the date of issuance). If you prefer, we will refund the class tuition minus a $10 processing fee. All refund requests must be submitted within 90 days of purchase. Withdrawals from classes and events under $25 are only eligible for a class credit; no refunds are given.

If you withdraw six days or less from the start date of a class, we do not issue class credits or refunds.

Transferring to another class

You may transfer into a different class if you contact us at least three business days before the start of the class. If there is a difference in price, we will issue a class credit or there will be a remaining balance to be paid. Refunds are not given.

We may occasionally take pictures of students in our classes for use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval.

online classes take place on Zoom. If you are unsure if you are able to use Zoom or if your camera and microphone work, we recommend testing it out by joining a test meeting before your class starts at zoom.us/test.

Student expectations for online classes

Classes will take place on Zoom. Do not share the Zoom meeting invitation and link with anyone who is not registered for the class.

Classes will take place at the time they are scheduled. We cannot provide recorded classes if you are not able to attend the class at the time scheduled.

one registration is for one person. If you are planning to invite your spouse, partner, or friend to attend this online class with you, please sign up for an additional seat.

For the security of our instructors and students, please do not record the class. Please do not take photos of the class without the permission of the instructor and the other students.

Please be aware that students are required to turn their camera on in most of our online classes.

YOU TEACH WATERCOLOR BUT ALSO WORK IN OILS. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WORKING WITH THESE MEDIA SPECIFICALLY?

Each one has its own particular set of challenges and rewards. With watercolor, everything has to be ready to go before you begin. I liken it to making a stir-fry. You need to have everything chopped and ready before you start because when you start cooking everything happens quickly and a little chaotically, that’s where the fun is.

With oils you have more time to work and rework, go back and change things which is rewarding and a challenge in its own right.

YOUR PAINTINGS COVER A LOT OF DIFFERENT SUBJECTS, HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR ARTISTIC PRACTICE?

There are so many interesting things in the world. I don’t know how anyone could just stay with one subject. I find everything so fascinating from people to buildings to animals to landscapes to still life, everything is amazing. The great thing about art is you’re able to study for hours whatever it is you’re painting.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE STILL-LIFE OBJECTS YOU LIKE TO USE WHEN TEACHING WATERCOLOR?

There are a lot of really good subjects for still life, I think metals like brass and bronze are really good for reflecting colors and light.

I like glass a lot, I like the refractions that you get from glass and water. Butterflies, those are fun. Flowers of course are fun to paint.

YOU TEACH THE VERY POPULAR BOTANICAL WATERCOLORS:

PAINTING THE FLOWER CLASS AT CCAE. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FLOWERS/PLANTS TO USE?

If I had to pick one flower to paint it would definitely be roses. They just have so much character. Especially the ones that have a large head with lots of variety inside of it. My second favorite would probably be sunflowers.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT TEACHING AT CCAE?

By far, the best thing about teaching at the CCAE is the students. The people in Cambridge and the surrounding area are such interesting humans. It’s great to work with and get to know my students, definitely the best part.
