The festival is open to all, regardless of age or ability and welcomes people with sensory or physical disabilities, learning difficulties, mental health service users, the disadvantaged and people undergoing rehabilitation and recovery. This year’s festival will launch at Chesterton Sports Centre on 9 June and will be followed by a month of exciting activities and events in and around Cambridge that concludes at the city’s biggest community event, The Big Weekend.

Festival Launch Event 10-4pm, Sunday 9 June – FREE event Chesterton Sports Centre, Gilbert Road, Cambridge CB4 3NY The Disability Sport and Arts Festival 2013 will launch this year with a diverse mix of free and fun activities for all. Arco Iris, Cambridge’s community Samba band will be performing live music and arts activities on the day will include wheelchair dancing, visual arts, bharatanyatam dance, experiential music therapy and integrated dance movement. There will be a wide range of fully accessible sports activities that will include adaptive rowing, badminton, boccia, football, kung fu, tennis, sledge hockey and lots more! This year’s event will build on the huge success of the 2012 festival, which saw hundreds of local people enjoy a wide range of activities and which was attended by 2012 Gold medal-winning Paralympian Harriet Lee and the Mayor of Cambridge.

The Disability Sport and Arts Festival celebrates the diverse range of creative and sporting activities and events that are inclusive and accessible to both nondisabled and disabled participants, their carers and families. This year the festival will be a partnership event between the City Council and the newly re-formed local disability focus group, now known as CLASP (Community Link for Art and Sport).

Even though the day is principally aimed at people with a disability, it is an inclusive event where friends, family members and support workers are all able to take part in the activities. So, everyone is welcome to join in, have a look around the centre or just watch some of the activities. Refreshments will be on sale from the Box Café from 10am-3pm (or bring a packed lunch).

Sledge Hockey is a variant of ice hockey and can be played on and off ice, using sledges to allow participants to move about the rink at high speeds hitting a puck traveling at speeds of up to 100kph. Players sit in adapted sledges, propelling themselves with sticks adapted to allow propulsion in a manner similar to skiing.

Addenbrooke’s hospital will be hosting an exhibition by extraordinary artists from the Barrington Farm Day Services Centre for adults with learning difficulties. The studio is based in Walcott, Norfolk and staffed by practising artists whose role is to facilitate and assist rather than to teach or instruct. Through this philosophy of non-intervention and by encouraging and nurturing individual talents the centre enables each artist to make their own creative decisions.

Cambridgeshire Music, Music Therapy Service is part of Cambridgeshire County Council Education Department. Cambridgeshire Music established its music therapy work in 1995 and this has since gone on from strength to strength.
