Welcome Cambridge Corn Exchange celebrates 25 years! It all began 25 years ago, on 3rd December 1986, when the doors of the new look Corn Exchange opened for the very first time to welcome and entertain the hundreds of thousands who have since experienced the very best in rock, pop, classical music, comedy, theatre, musicals and ballet in the heart of the city. Oasis, The Smiths, David Bowie, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Björk, Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Eddie Izzard, Russell Brand, Lenny Henry, John Martyn, Jimmy Carr, Sir Simon Rattle, Darcey Bussell, Sylvie Guillem, Theatre de Complicite, Borodin String Quartet, Royal Ballet, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sugababes, Ian Dury, Primal Scream, Elbow . . . the list goes on of stars who have performed on the Corn Exchange stage and, together with you, helped create the unique place it has become over the last quarter of a century. 2012 is therefore a very special year of celebration in the venue’s history and we will be marking its position as the region’s leading centre for entertainment throughout the next 12 months. City of London Sinfonia in partnership with the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, are embarking on this landmark concert tour to celebrate the centenary of Scott’s expedition to the Antarctic. The concert tells the story of the expedition through music from the film score to Scott of the Antarctic and Vaughan Williams’ Sinfonia Antartica, with its eerie wordless female chorus and elaborate percussion section. The concert also features projected original photographs from the expedition itself, as well as readings from Scott’s own diary and letters written during the expedition. In addition, composer Cecilia McDowall has been commissioned to write a new piece of music entitled Seventy Degrees Below Zero, specifically for the tour.
