Information for Businesses

On the day, all parking (including blue badge parking) will be restricted on the main route and in some side roads. Signs indicating where and when these restrictions are will be put up in advance, and cones put out on the day. There will also be some lay-by suspensions. Residents are advised to ensure all vehicles are removed from the route in advance of the convoy. Disabled parking will be available see website for details.

Please consider issues around disruption to your business including deliveries and staff access to work during the hours of the Torch Relay. Please note that advertising A boards are not permitted and we request that chairs or cafe tables are not put out outside businesses along the route on the day of the Torch Relay.

Trading Standards officers will be on patrol during this weekend. The Olympic Torch is coming to Cambridge!

Come and be part of history in the city and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience!

Cambridge has been chosen to be part of the Olympic Torch Relay on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July 2012, giving local people a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome the Olympic Flame to the city. The Torch began its journey on 19 May and will pass through Cambridge on Day 50 and 51 of its 70-day journey across the UK. Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of the city and also to enjoy a fantastic Evening Celebration on Parker’s Piece, which forms part of the city’s annual Big Weekend.

The Olympic Torch Relay route The map below shows the route that the Torch will be taking in Cambridge.

On Saturday 7 July, the Torch Relay will finish on Parker’s Piece where an Evening Celebration event will be held. This Evening Celebration is also part of Cambridge City Council’s annual Big Weekend celebrations, which run from Friday 6 – Sunday 8 July. Timings of Activity Saturday At approximately 6pm on Saturday 7 July, the Olympic Torch will begin its Relay with Torchbearers at Newmarket Road (A1303) turning left into Barnwell Road and Brooks Road (A1134) before turning right to make its final approach to the city centre along Mill Road, arriving on Parker’s Piece around 6.50pm.

The Official Presenting Partners of the Olympic Torch Relay, Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung will precede the Olympic Torch with interactive vehicles. These will pass down the route handing out promotional items to the crowds from the left hand side of the vehicles only and viewing is recommended from that side. The Flame will then be carried on to the Evening Celebration Stage where it will light a giant cauldron. This celebratory ceremony will include live entertainment brought to you by the Presenting Partners, Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, including performances from:

Road closures

Plus local community talent including acclaimed dance troupe Dance Offensive, and Striking Together For Gold, an amazing percussion performance created as part of a Cambridgeshire Music schools project, and local choirs. Immediately following the entertainment on the Evening Celebration stage will be a community spectacular called ‘A Field For Dreams’ which will commence in front of the Big Weekend stage. The massive piece of public art will feature local people with giant puppets, flags, stage pyrotechnics, music, dance and a giant sculptural frieze which will be constructed as darkness falls. Sunday Early on the morning of Sunday 8 July, the Flame will make an appearance in Great Court, Trinity College. The Trinity Event will not be open to the general public but will be broadcast live on BBC television. The Flame will leave Trinity College by punt along the River Cam at 6.50am and leave the City at approximately 7.45am via Huntingdon Road. Google Maps

With thousands of people expected to enjoy the Olympic Torch on its route through Cambridge there is some important information to help you make the most of the celebrations:

Roads on the Olympic Torch Relay route will be subject to rolling road closures, where police will temporarily close the road approximately 10 – 15 minutes ahead of the Torch. On Saturday 7 July Mill Road will be closed to traffic from East Road to Coleridge Road from mid afternoon to approximately 8pm. The junction of Gonville Place/East Road and Mill Road will also be closed at approximately 6.40pm to allow the Torch to pass and will remain in place until crowds have moved on. Regent Street Northbound, Parkside and Park Terrace are also affected by road closures. Please refer to the website for full details. On Sunday 8 July, Bridge Street and Magdalene Street will be closed from approximately 6am to 7.30am. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes (signed diversions are not planned because of the nature of the rolling closure) and to allow for delays.
