Summer is very special this year in Cambridge. Excitement is mounting as the city joins others across the country, preparing to welcome the Olympic Flame on its historic journey through Britain. The flame arrives during one of the highlights of the city’s summer – The Big Weekend – three days of FREE entertainment and live music for all ages! The Big Weekend is one of several special summer events organised by Cambridge City Council which also include: Midsummer Fair, one of the country’s oldest and biggest travelling fun fairs and markets where you can enjoy candy floss, toffee apples and the thrill of a fair ride and Jazz and Brass In the Parks, six Sunday concerts throughout the summer weeks taking place in leafy Cambridge parks in association with Barratt Homes. We have also specially created a programme of children’s sports, to get the kids out into the fresh air enjoying themselves!

The first day of the fair sees the Mayor and other members of the Council continuing the age old tradition of parading and proclaiming the Fair open by scattering pennies to the crowd. Come down at 6.30pm on the opening Wednesday evening for a truly special and historical spectacle. Royston Town Brass Band lead the procession. The fair features some of the best traitional fair rides including dodgems, roundabouts, rollercoasters and ghost trains, as well as all the usual fun of the fair including candyfloss, hot dogs, toffee apples and more. This is a great outing, whatever your age!

Starting with a great mix of live music and summer fireworks on the Friday night, the weekend includes favourites like the French market, stalls and sports fun. But this year, look out for some special extras like The Big Dance Marquee; The Fun Lab! from the Cambridge University Science Festivals team and supported by Napp and The Village Green – a real life solar powered village green complete with stocks, duck pond and a Storytelling Tent. Of course, this year’s Big Weekend will be an historic occasion as the Olympic Flame arrives in the heart of the city on Saturday evening. The day’s entertainment reflects this epic event, with Olympics inspired activities throughout the Big Weekend site. A Carnival procession opens Saturday and in the evening a special Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration welcomes the Torch on its journey, which will be marked in unforgettable and spectacular fashion. The centrepiece of these celebrations will be a two-hour community extravaganza, Field For Dreams. Sunday brings an international flavour to the weekend’s music and events, including world music on the main stage. A popular highlight, Cambridge’s Mela returns. Traditionally a celebration of Asian culture, this is one of the country’s most up and coming Mela events. A night of superb music finishing with a spectacular summer fireworks display to put everyone in the mood for a great weekend. CAMBRIDGE BAND COMPETITION WINNER Strawberry Fair’s Cambridge Band Competition has been bringing the best of the region’s music to the city for almost 30 years! This year’s winner, Grace Sarah, promises to be ‘one to watch’.

Family Fun Day & Music plus arrival of the Olympic Torch Stage Parker’s Piece 12 Midday – 10pm FREE Saturday at The Big Weekend is packed from beginning to end with lots to see and do. The day’s events begin at 12 noon when over a hundred local artists and musicians lead a massive carnival procession across Parker’s Piece. Later on join in the excitement of The Olympic Flame arriving in the city! MAIN STAGE
ED DREWETT With his debut single out this summer, support comes from Ed Drewett, who has pop, indie and folk influences, and has written chart singles for The Wanted.
THE NOISETTES Funky Indie band The Noisettes headline with their electrifying mix of disco & soul pop songs, well known for their chart-topping tracks ‘Don’t Upset the Rhythm (Go Baby Go)’ and ‘Never Forget You’. THE BIG WEEKEND FIREWORKS OPENING At 10pm enjoy the spectacular summer fireworks opening alongside a rousing sporting themes musical medley, supported by Deloitte.
Cambridge Summer Music Festival brings the city’s very own Arco Iris to the stage, playing the hottest and loudest of Brazilian carnival rhythms. Local school children will join in with the performance after taking part in special workshops. English Pocket Opera Company will showcase their amazing Olympic musical project, ‘Ring Around The World’ created with 220 classes of schoolchildren from across Cambridgeshire, in partnership with professional dancers and musicians. Rock Choir Cambridge, St Neots and Huntingdon take to the stage with 80 singers performing Motown, gospel and chart songs. Impington Youth Dance and Dance Offensive will each present a unique energy packed performance. OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY EVENING CELEBRATION At 5pm all the action switches to the opening of the Olympic stage for an unforgettable two hours of entertainment and countdown to the Torch’s historic arrival. In partnership with Cambridge University Science Festivals and supported by Napp. THE BIG DANCE MARQUEE It doesn’t get much bigger than this! Part of the national Big Dance Festival the marquee will showcase schools projects along with lots of different workshops including a fantastic ceilidh to finish!

A Field For Dreams
Parker’s Piece 7.30pm – 9.30pm (aprox) Join thousands of Cambridge residents to welcome the Olympic Torch and celebrate the city! A Field For Dreams is a unique arts spectacular, putting the people of Cambridge in the spotlight! Award-winning community arts charity, Same Sky and their team of local artists have spent months leading up to the Big Weekend, working behind the scenes with over 50 schools and community groups.
CHYPPS YOUNG PEOPLE’S PERFORMANCE MARQUEE A dedicated stage for the up and coming talent of Cambridgeshire.
Working across the city in each area: north with support from Napp, south and east with support from Ridgeons and west/central, the Same Sky team has taken the Olympics inspired themes of diversity, equality, peace and a healthy environment and worked with all the schools and groups in each sector on their particular theme.
THE BIG SCREEN The Big Screen, with Cambridge Film Trust will be showing free feature films, shorts and community films with a sporting theme.
The final result is an amazing piece of public art at its creative best and unique to Cambridge, with giant puppets, flags, stage pyrotechnics, music, dance and a giant sculptural frieze which will be constructed as darkness falls.
ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY POP-UP GALLERY Take part in the Scribble Games where Changing Spaces will unite everyone under the motto ‘The Artist is the Athlete’. Help create a Scribble games mascot and test your endurance in a draw-athon. Supported by Anglia Ruskin University. VILLAGE GREEN Take a stroll around the solar powered Village Green, complete with stocks, duck pond, Morris dancing, steel oak tree and croquet green with willow art plus drumming workshops. Some of the region’s best storytellers will be weaving their sports themed tales throughout the day in the Storytelling Tent. The best of the rest . . . Stock up on croissants at the ever popular French market, enjoy a drink with friends in the Bar Marquee and don’t forget to visit the Community market – a range of stalls from community groups and organisations in a special marquee with its own tea room!
Why not visit each community's camp on site during the day, to meet their giant puppet before the show and take part in a workshop making a flag or lantern so you can join in. Celebrating an historic moment, A Field For Dreams promises to be a truly one-off spectacle the likes of which the city will never see again.

On Saturday 7 July, the Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Cambridge!
Cambridge takes centre stage in a once in a lifetime event that will put the city firmly on the world map, with the chance to celebrate in style. The Torch Relay will travel through the county on Saturday 7 July before travelling down Barnwell Road and Mill Road where it will arrive for an official Evening Celebration event, which will form part of this year’s Big Weekend. The Torch will be welcomed with a spectacular show on Parker’s Piece, where the Celebration Cauldron will be lit. This celebratory ceremony will include live entertainment brought to you by the official Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partners Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung including a blistering performance from up-and-coming rock act Young Guns, winners of Sky‘s smash hit dance show ‘Got To Dance’ Chris & Wes and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ finalists Twist & Pulse. All of this will feature alongside local community talent including acclaimed dance troupe Dance Offensive; Striking Together For Gold, an amazing percussion performance created as part of a Cambridgeshire Music schools project; local choirs. The Torch’s activity in the city will continue early on the morning of Sunday 8 July, where it will make a private appearance at Great Court, Trinity College before departing by punt along the River Cam where it will disembark by Magdelene Bridge and continue up Huntingdon Road. Cambridge will be one of only 63 locations outside London to have the honour of hosting an Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration – come and join us and celebrate in style! Parker’s Piece will be well worth a visit on Sunday, as The Big Weekend concludes with a vibrant day of international culture and music. Take it easy listening to some of the fantastic world music on the main stage, watch or learn some different dance styles and enjoy the third Cambridge Mela – a celebration of Asian culture and a summer highlight at The Big Weekend.
Now in its third year, the Cambridge Mela is a very popular city event and one of the most up and coming melas in the country, this year supported by BBC Radio Asian Network. There will be three Mela marquees with lots going on: arts and crafts, delicious food to sample, jewellery, henna design, fashion, demonstrations on how to wear a saree, Indian head massage and cooking demonstrations. The Bangladeshi Marquee will feature traditional performances from many artists, including Simmi, Omit Dey and Mamunur Rashid. And in the third tent, the Cambridge Mela Main Stage, the afternoon is packed with music all compered by Tommy Sandhu and Noreen Khan. Artists include: award winning Asian/Urban artist Mumzy Stranger with Tasha Tah, Char Avell & Junai Kaden; one of the most successful Asian music producers, Panjabi By Nature; rising UK hip-hop star Shizzio; British Asian turntablist Panjabi MC and Punjabi singer, writer and producer Foji Gill. The Main Cambridge Mela Stage will also feature local artists, Dhol players and Bhangra workshops.

World music acts on stage throughout the day: If I Were A River, are a folk band from Cambridge’s Hungarian twin town, Szeged give ancient Hungarian music a modern twist; Batacuda Sound Machine are renowned for their unique blend of Brazilian beats, hip hop and Pacific soul; TG Collective give intense live performances playing a mix of gypsy jazz and flamenco with contemporary classical influences and Cambridge favourites, Sunday Driver make a welcome return to the Big Weekend. Traditional drummers and dancers from Ghana, the Kakatsitsi Master Drummers; Tariq Muhammed and the Africelt Gamelan Connection in concert with the Cambridge Gamelan Orchestra, present a world premiere; Cambridge African Network Dance Troupe perform vibrant African cultural dance and Cambridge Malayalee Association’s performance gives a taste of the culture and dances of Kerala, southern India. THE BIG SCREEN This state of the art cinema will show feature films, shorts and community film with an international flavour on Sunday. THE BIG DANCE MARQUEE Sunday features Flamenco, Belly dance, Capoeira, Japanese and English folk dance plus dance and choreography workshops. THE ART CANNON ‘Art for all, art by all, art fired into the air and destroyed by all!’ A fun event in which eight members of the public will dress for the occasion, produce a work of art to be judged by the public. The winner gets to keep theirs and the losing pieces will be shredded, loaded into the cannon along with extra secret ingredients and fired at a target… creating another piece of art! CAMBRIDGESHIRE COMPETES An Olympics inspired partnership between museums and sports centres, this special area will include activities plus a special exhibition and aims to capture hidden histories by collecting memories from Olympics spectators past and present.
