What’s On Jan – May 2013
Welcome Happy New Year and welcome to a new season at the Corn Exchange. And what a season it is! Some seriously good music is on offer in the next few months. From Richard Hawley, shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and attracting immense critical acclaim for his sold-out shows and highest charting album to date, to Richard Thompson, one of the country’s greatest songwriters and guitarists, through to blues legend and multiGrammy winner Robert Cray, and at the start of his career, the very young, hugely original and talented Jake Bugg. And not forgetting Mercury winners Alt-J! If anyone missed out on the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s sell-out concert, launching the Cambridge Classical Concert Series last autumn, there’s a chance to hear another stunning performance from them as the series continues until May. Artist-in-Residence Julian Lloyd Webber will be performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Cellos in a unique April concert with his wife Jiaxin Cheng, a concert which also features Eric Whitacre’s Cambridge inspired piece, The River Cam.

Chas and Dave
Mon 25 Feb | 7.30pm Tickets £12
Thur 28 Feb | 7.30pm Tickets £24
Having supported Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Stone Roses and Snow Patrol, Jake Bugg, the fast-rising hitmaker from Nottingham has announced his biggest UK headline tour to date. Unusually confident and forthright, he’s a proper scally with awesome stage presence. Arriving onto the radar in 2011 after his performance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury, Jake is now signed to Mercury and recently unveiled his debut single Trouble Town which Zane Lowe swiftly earmarked as his Single of the Week.
Having gained a cult audience of both young and old, Chas and Dave are about to be seen together on stage once more. The cockney pop rock duo are most notable as creators and performers of a musical style labelled ‘rockney’, which mixes elements of pub singalong, music-hall humour and boogie-woogie piano.

Originally a ‘timber man’ from Lavant Tin Mine, Jethro will be performing armed with nothing more than a microphone, a stand and a small table with his favourite drink to hand. As he paces the stage from side to side, you’ll hear hilarious antics of rural comedy delivered to you in a warm, Cornish accent. Selling over four million standup comedy DVDs to date, isn’t it about time you came and experienced some serious nonsensical twaddle!?
Folk rock pioneers. Pop stars. An inspiration to generations. Steeleye Span have been many things. After two successful tours in 2011 and a few festivals in 2012 Steeleye are sticking as a six piece for their 2013 tour. Since emerging as an important component of the magnificent ’60s British Pop Revolution, The Hollies’ hallmark sound has not wavered during their fifty years of recording and performing live around the world.

If you like the stuff he’s done on Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo or in any of the nine radio series’ he’s done for Radio 4 then this is the show for you. Hundreds of his celebrated one-liners, plus pictures he drew. Clever, surreal but mainly just stupid. He’s won awards you know.
‘I’ve just turned 50, the kids have left home, and my cat just died.’ In Suggs: My Life Story, the Madness frontman takes to the stage in a hilarious yet moving one man tour de force playing to rave reviews.
The band will perform their classic hits, including The Air That I Breathe, Stop Stop Stop, Carrie Anne, He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother and many more in a two hour celebration of all things Hollies. This band helped shape the world of rock and pop as we know it today.

The Boy With Tape On His Face Thur 4 Apr Stand-up with no talking, mime with noise and punch lines without words. This boy has to be seen to be believed. What does he do? The less you know, the more you will enjoy! But if you must know, he will have a gunfight, battle Darth Vader and bring John Lennon back to life. All this and more. 2012 saw him sell out his entire 750 capacity month long run at the Edinburgh Festival ending with him winning the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award. He’s also appeared at The Royal Variety Performance and BBC2’s Comedy Prom with Tim Minchin.
