What’s On May – Sept 2013

Welcome to summer at the Corn Exchange. As the temperature begins to warm up so does our programme of entertainment, which in June features a rare chance to see one of the hottest properties in classical music, superstar guitarist, Milos. Following a sell-out concert at London’s Albert Hall, he is joined by the English Chamber Orchestra for a very special evening of music including the most popular guitar concerto of all time, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. We have comedy from Jason Manford, a Cambridge Comedy Festival gig headlined by Dylan Moran and music from, amongst others, Eliza Carthy & Jim Moray, Tubular Bells for Two, George Thorogood and Steve Winwood. In September the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre comes to Cambridge. We are delighted Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap will be opening at the Corn Exchange as part of a landmark world tour, celebrating 60 years and over 25,000 performances in London’s West End.

Shaolin Warriors Return of the Master

Fri 10 May | 7.30pm Tickets £21.50, £19.50, £15 Shaolin Warriors’ new show, Return of the Master, is a breathtaking theatrical Kung Fu Show. With 22 professionally trained Kung Fu Masters, this extravaganza features gorgeous scenery, atmospheric music, beautiful lights and hundreds of costumes. Audiences will be amazed and thrilled by their death defying Kung Fu disciplines such as qigong, animal imitation boxing, drunken boxing, and fighting with over 20 kinds of dangerous traditional weapons.

Pioneers of the post-punk movement, Joy Division was one of the most influential and iconic British bands ever. In a totally unique, evocative homage the Heritage Orchestra, sound artist Scanner and visual artist Matt Watkins interweave original compositions based on Joy Division songs with stunning projections – a chance to experience once again the band’s unforgettable cutting edge spirit. Our exciting 2013/14 Cambridge Classical Concert Series opens in the autumn and continues to go from strength to strength. This season we’re proud to announce that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the UK’s most prestigious orchestras, has accepted our invitation to become the venue’s first Orchestra in Residence. Over the next three years we will be working closely with the RPO to bring a wide range of education and engagement projects to the city

Mercury Music Prize winners Alt-J are carving out their own unique niche in today’s music scene. Originally coming together in Leeds in 2007, the band – named after a keyboard shortcut – now reside in Cambridgeshire and have been receiving widespread praise and critical acclaim along with a dedicated and growing fan base. It is difficult to place them in any genre, but we like to think of them as ‘Boffin Rock!’

Purple Van Man

We all know what white van men think about the world we live in but it’s time to hear a different voice: purple van man’s voice. Filled with gags, opinions, daft observations and some silly voices, this is Sean Lock doing what he does best, spouting inspired jibber jabber as he crosses the country in his purple van. He will make you laugh like a drunken horse. A British Comedy Award winner and regular comedy show panellist, Sean Lock has performed on Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

Rimsky-Korsakov Introduction & Three Miracles from Tsar Sultan Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 in B Minor The internationally acclaimed Moscow State Symphony Orchestra ends the 2012/13 Cambridge Classical Concert Season in spectacular fashion. The evening opens with Introduction & Three Miracles from Rimsky-Korsakov’s voluptuous and exotic Tsar Sultan Suite. One of the brightest pianists to emerge from Russia in recent years, soloist Tatiana Kolesova performs Tchaikovsky’s great Piano Concerto No. 1 with verve and brilliance. From its slow, ominous opening, to the turbulent pathos contained within, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor (Pathetique) is the composer’s great swan song. The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, under revered conductor Pavel Kogan, brings this great work powerfully to life.

‘Punchy, inventive, superb… undeniably brilliant.’ The Times

40th Anniversary Concert Tour Sat 18 May | 7.30pm Tickets £20

A very special double bill from two of the great figures in English folk music, each with an anniversary to celebrate: Eliza Carthy has been recording and touring for twenty one years, Jim Moray has been recording and touring for ten years. And now they want to celebrate to mark these milestones.

Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells is perhaps the most unlikely smash hit record ever to be released. The celtic-folk-rock opus shot to number one around the world in 1973, throwing its young composer into the international spotlight and kick-starting Richard Branson’s Virgin Music empire.

Composer, vocalist, and multi instrumentalist, Steve Winwood has an impressive back catalogue of hits including Valerie, Higher Love and Grammy award winning Back In The High Life and Roll With It.

They will be sharing an all-star ten-piece band featuring many of the leading figures from their careers so far and playing a ‘Best Of’ set each in a spectacular show. In association with

Winners of the 2012 Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe, multi-instrumentalists Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts have arranged the entire score to be played out by just two blokes. In this unique musical feat, the influential masterpiece is brought to life with all its multi-layered madness and subtle beauty intact.

‘Triumphant.’ The Times

Winwood was a key member of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go and for more than four decades, has remained a primary figure in Rock ‘n’ Roll, a respected innovator who has helped to create some of the genre’s most celebrated achievements.

Joining Dylan is Canadian star Glenn Wool, one of the most subtly smart, wickedly charming comic story tellers. Also on the bill are Jo Caulfield with her trademark razor sharp wit, and cheeky cockney and rising star Rich Wilson.

Stand up sets on Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and The Royal Variety Performance have all helped establish Jason as a nationally known comic.
