What’s On Sept – Dec 2013
Welcome to autumn at the Corn Exchange.
Jason Manford
Summer may be drawing to a close but there’s so much to look forward to this autumn at the Corn Exchange. Murder and mystery courtesy of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap will keep everyone on the edge of their seats in this truly British institution. Going on tour for the very first time to mark the play’s Diamond Anniversary, it’s a unique chance to be part of theatrical history.
First World Problems
Then for something completely different. One of the highlights this autumn has to be Joy Division Reworked, brought specially to Cambridge by the Corn Exchange. Whether or not you’re a fan of Ian Curtis and one of the UK’s most influential bands, don’t miss this unique audio visual experience. A first for the city, it promises to be one of the most talked about events ever seen at the venue. The Cambridge Classical Concert Series begins in October and of the six concerts taking place, three are being performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the country’s most prestigious and best loved orchestras, the RPO has accepted an invitation to be the venue’s first ever Orchestra in Residence, bringing some exciting educational projects to the city. Comedy stars for the autumn include Jason Manford, Russell Brand and Bill Bailey whilst major music acts from folk through to rock include Laura Marling, Alison Moyet, Bryan Ferry and two highly anticipated gigs from Jamie Cullum in October and Madeleine Peyroux in November following her sell-out season at Ronnie Scott’s. The Corn Exchange is definitely the place to celebrate Christmas this year with so many festive themed shows throughout December. From Dr Bunhead’s hilarious science show to Kate Rusby’s Yorkshire inspired songs and carols - this is a Christmas box packed with delights to end an incredible year of superb entertainment.

The Mousetrap tells the tale of group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow who discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. Winner of the Brits Critics’ Choice Award for 2013, this year is shaping up to be huge for Tom Odell.
World-renowned musical icon Alison Moyet has achieved sales of more than 20 million, both as a solo artist and as half of influential duo Yazoo.
Sandi Toksvig - comedian, novelist, actor, broadcaster, university chancellor, showoff and international treasure continues her smash hit, sell-out solo tour.
Appearing for a record breaking 25th time at the Cambridge Corn Exchange.
Having written since the age of 13 he is now signed to Lilly Allen Cooper’s label and his new EP Songs From Another Love showcases his gentle yet powerful vocals.
Her first album since 2007, The Minutes, was written with and produced by Guy Sigsworth, known for his work with Frou Frou, Robyn, Björk, Goldie and Madonna. The Minutes is arguably Alison’s most creatively-brimming album ever. It has subtle parallels to her synth-pop past but is also bang up-to-date taking in elements of high-end pop smashes, R&B, modern club sounds and electronic experimentation. This show places The Minutes centre stage and will focus on the significant electronic material in her back catalogue.
Long-standing host of BBC Radio Four’s News Quiz and Excess Baggage and regular QI panellist, Sandi will be performing her uniquely witty evening of stand-up, stories and fascinating facts.

Comedian, musician and actor Bill Bailey returns to the UK with his new tour Qualmpeddler. It features a brilliant mix of stand-up, stories, music and oldfashioned wit, distilled from his own extraordinary experiences and reactions to the modern world.

Bob is back! 26 years since their final show in Dublin, The Boomtown Rats - Bob Geldof on vocals, Pete Briquette on bass, Simon Crowe on drums and Gary Roberts on guitar are back on tour.
Jamie’s sixth studio album is titled Momentum for good reason. Bursting with ideas and inspirations, which almost have a life of their own it has been dubbed his best work yet. It was produced in part by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Adele) and Dan The Automator (Kasabian, DJ Shadow) and it should come as no surprise that, combined with Jamie’s talent, the album is brimful of some beautiful and epic songs.
Having supported Bruce Springsteen at Hard Rock Calling in June, don’t miss Deaf Havana’s headline tour this October.
Messiah Complex is a mental disorder where the sufferer thinks they might be the messiah. Did Jesus have it? What about Che Guevara, Gandhi, Malcolm X and Hitler? All these men have shaped our lives and influenced the way we think. Their images are used to represent ideas that often do not relate to them at all.
Formed in 1975 they exploded out of Ireland becoming part of the punk scene with their loud, fast, furious music. Classic Rats’ hits include Lookin’ After No 1, Like Clockwork, She’s So Modern, I Don’t Like Mondays and Rat Trap, songs with an immediacy and a message as pertinent today as when they were first written.
Jamie gave people a taste of his electrifying live performance earlier this year when he played on the concourse at St Pancras International, the rooftop at Shelter UK and the The London Shard to launch of his new album. Each show was an absolute roadblock and you can expect the same this autumn for the Momentum Tour.
‘The remarkable return of Jamie Cullum.’ GQ
Joining the band on all dates of the UK run will be Charlie Simpson and Big Sixes. The band will release their highly anticipated new album Old Souls this autumn.
Would Gandhi be into Apple? Would Che Guevara endorse Madonna? Would Jesus be into Christianity (wow man you’re blowin my mind!). Should we even care what they think considering Gandhi slept with naked girls in his bed, Malcolm X dealt drugs and Che Guevara smelt funny? All great people are flawed, all of us, flawed people are capable of greatness and for every identifiable icon there is an anonymous mob of unrecognised bods doing all the admin and heavy lifting. This show looks at the importance of heroes in this age of atheistic disposability. Plus there’s sex. Obviously.

Bryan Ferry embarks on his first major UK tour since 2007’s Dylanesque tour. It will feature his usual band and also The Bryan Ferry Orchestra with whom he has just released the new album The Jazz Age.
Hailed by Strad magazine as ‘the doyen of British cellists’ and widely regarded as one the finest musicians of his generation, Julian Lloyd Webber has become a firm favourite with Corn Exchange audiences. The leading British pianist of his generation, John Lill’s career has taken him to over fifty countries. Emma Johnson is recognised as ‘England’s best loved clarinet player’ (BBC Music Magazine). The lively and eclectic programme will be presented in an intimate setting with music by Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev, Fauré and Brahms.

Texas’s eighth album, The Conversation marks their 25th anniversary year and is their first in eight years. It’s the latest in a career that has seen the band sell over 30 million albums worldwide with a succession of multi-platinum albums.
‘The only thing that matters is the song,’ says singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. That conviction along with a ‘one of a kind’ voice, has carried her from busking on the streets of Paris, all the way to mainstream recognition. Through intensely distinctive renditions of old classics and modern tunes by the likes of Leonard Cohen and The Beatles, Peyroux has proved to be an uncannily insightful interpreter with her consistently impeccable choice of material.
The Orb are an English electronic music group known for spawning the genre of ambient house. Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty, The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London.
One of the UK’s most successful TV cookery shows comes to Cambridge with a cast headed up by Executive Chef Lesley Waters (ITV’s This Morning).
Following her forthcoming sell-out season at Ronnie Scott’s, Madeleine’s new album, The Blue Room, sees the genre-blending singer reworking some landmark musical gems. The result is a terrific recording - a moving and sophisticated album that pays tribute to the spirit of Ray Charles and his classic 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.
The group hit critical and commercial success in the early 1990s with the albums The Orb’s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb, the latter of which reached No.1 on the British album charts in 1992. They now tour the UK to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Celebrating a 21 year musical partnership, singer-songwriter Steve Knightley and multiinstrumentalist Phil Beer have sold out the Royal Albert Hall four times and are triple winners at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (Best Duo, Best Original Song, Best Live Act).
This overdue return in 2013 clearly redefines and confidently re-introduces the band afresh with tracks written and produced by singer/ guitarist Sharleen Spiteri and bassist Johnny McElhone and featuring collaborations with singer-songwriter Richard Hawley and Bernard Butler.
