Karāpiro is watching one the biggest hydro upgrades the Waikato River has seen – and The News has been given a tour to see how work is progressing. For lake users the $75 million project means the loss of the use of the road over the dam for some time – for the country, it means Karāpiro will generate enough extra electricity to power 19,000 homes. Mercury New Zealand staff are lauding Karāpiro, built the 1940s, as being a remarkable piece of engineering. Mary Anne Gill and Benjamin Wilson bring you the story and

Our new police station looks lovely and a big thanks to all the contractors who made it happen. My query is regarding the Victoria (high level) Bridge. Can someone advise what is the correct protocol if we are on the bridge when we see lights/sirens behind us? There is nowhere to pull over on the bridge to let police through. And I’m guessing with the location of the new station, the Victoria Bridge will get used more in the future for callouts.

It’s regrettable to see the Te Awamutu Community Board has been misled into recommending a warning over fluoride in drinking water that is nothing more than scaremongering by a long-standing antifluoride activist. Overwhelming scientific evidence makes it clear that fluoridation is safe and effective, and has the largest benefit for our most vulnerable; children, the elderly and the marginalised.

Daniel Ryan Lower Hutt A stupid situation So, there are councillors who see a need for another bridge over the Waikato. It is their stupidity, allowing massive housing developments and creating an inward migration, that has caused road congestion and with the recent development on Cambridge west, it will require another bridge. When will these people learn? Growth pushed without thought brings massive financial cost to the ratepayers, especially with our roads, for one needing urgent attention. Buying land for cycle trails is more important as is $99,000 a year land rent for the old Bunnings building. Now the Cambridge water treatment needs expanding, with 300ha on Cambridge west, will this need another expansion.???Weneedcouncillors who will put Waipa first and not their own wants. Projects .

Please, have discussions with your elderly family members and neighbours to make them aware. Any unsolicited approaches, especially online (for example via apps such as Whatsapp) that lead to requests for money transfers or gift card purchases are to be ignored or treated with a high level of caution. Scammers also contact us via text and phone calls. I have myself been the recipient of several unsolicited international calls to my mobile phone. These are also scam based. The best action is to not answer the call and to immediately block the number from your phone each time a new number comes in. Graffiti is the other hot topic of the moment, as we all have seen an increase in this around town. Someone deliberately spray painting or writing on another person’s property is wilful damage. If tagging is located on your private property, please report it to 105 along with a photo of the tag, prior to removing it. Taggers will typically have their own dedicated tag name which they use, and you will frequently see it drawn on their personal belongings and spaces. Graffiti is one of those entry level crimes that can lead on to further offending. Tagging creates visual annoyance and can negatively affect a community’s sense of safety. Graffiti, when left, is inherently selfperpetuating, as a second tagger may want to overwrite the first tag or simply see the presence of one tag as justification to graffiti the same location. If you have any information as to an individual’s use of a specific tag, let us know. Report it to 105.police.govt.nz or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If you see offenders tagging in front of you, call 111 immediately. One final note, a query has been raised around what to do if you are crossing the high level bridge in Cambridge and a police car is on urgent duty driving with lights and sirens behind you. It is not practical, nor expected that you will try to stop or pull over in someway to let a Police car pass on the bridge itself. It is however required that you pull over to let the police car pass your car, as soon as safely possible once you are on the roadway at the other side.

Bernie Fynn Te Awamutu

The very reason the decision on fluoridation now rests with the Director General of the Ministry of Health, rather than local authorities, is to ensure the latest and most compelling science is properly considered by experts – not local body politicians, who have regularly been targeted by loud and cherrypicking opponents. Te Awamutu community board member Kane Titchener has a long history of opposing fluoridation. Our own world-renowned Dunedin longitudinal study is one of many high-quality, large population-based studies showing that fluoridation has no effect on IQ, and in fact leads to better outcomes overall. There is nothing to fear from fluoridation, unless you oppose better teeth.

Race-based favouritism – where do words like this come from? The candidate’s use of this phrase suggests to me that he is opposed to the Crown giving recognition and effect to partnership with Maori in accordance with the principles of Te Tiriti / the Treaty. My interpretation of race-based favouritism in this context may be completely wrong and I hope it is but if not, I feel deeply sad for my grandchildren who think our society is going to treat them more equitably than mine, my parents, my grand-parents and numerous generations before me. Ultimately it seems completely incongruous that candidate Graf goes on to speak of an inclusive Waikato and that he, ironically, will be a voice for me. Am I, as a person of Maori descent, incapable of speaking for myself? Forgive me if I come across as somewhat cyncial and sceptical in thinking candidate Graf will represent mine, my whānau, hapū and iwi interests fairly but I’m happy for him to prove me wrong. This week I had the pleasure of joining Eileen and Kathy from Cambridge Neighbourhood Support and Terry Johnston of Secranet to meet with Tamahere locals around crime prevention. I appreciated the opportunity and look forward to more local crime prevention meetings in the near future. I have mentioned scammers in the past, but it appears that they are the gift that keeps on giving…or receiving in the case of Steam and iTunes cards. Retailers are again telling me that our elderly are being targeted and convinced to purchase credit on these gift cards, adding up to several hundred dollars over a short space of time. Where this happens, it is highly likely they are being conned by a scammer. Knowledge is our best defence in these situations.

Julia CambridgeRaupi Editor’s note: See Deb Thurgood’s column on this page today. A voter’s dilemma I always vote because I believe in democracy but apart from that I try to keep a healthy distance between myself and politics whether local or central. However, having read the profiles of the four candidates vying for the Waipā seat (The News, August 18), it was with some disappointment that I read candidate Clyde Graf summarise his local government aspirations thus: “A vote for me is a vote to stop Three Waters, oppose race-based favouritism, to promote an inclusive Waikato, and to keep rates down. A vote for me is a voice for you.”

“The technology to live a normal, healthy life is there, but Kiwis aren’t given access to it,” says Diabetes NZ chief executive Heather Verry. Nightscout wants more funding for rapid-acting insulin. The demand on primary and secondary health care – such as from hypoglycaemic episodes - would diminish if Pharmac increased funding, says Waipā District Council chief executive Garry Dyet. Hypoglycaemic episodes occur when blood glucose levels fall to dangerous levels resulting in seizures, convulsions and in more serious cases, strokes. A tiny and discreet transmitter on their bodies sends blood glucose data to their watches and phones every few minutes, making it easier for them to make more informed decisions about diabetes management. Data can also be provided to family members –vital when children have type one diabetes – and to their GPs and diabetes healthcare professionals. Type one diabetes is a lifelong auto immune condition where people must maintain a round-theclock eye on their sugar levels. It’s worth an investment, likely starting around $120 to $150 plus GST for a basic headshot. You’d be paying more if you want to try some different outfits. Pilott said the figures in question were obtained as a result of The News asking council staff for them. In one, he wrote that council staff did not have information sought at the meeting by the councillor and an “Official Information Request” was being processed for the statistics.“…you published stats this week requested by Susan [O’Regan]…I fear the only way these stats came to The News is via a personal briefing with a councillor,” he wrote. Woodhams has raised concerns with The News about its coverage and said 10 prominent local people he had approached had suggested it was biased. He earlier complained that two stories last week about the third bridge for Cambridge were negative and that a story asking other mayoral comments for their views on his bridge suggestions, published the previous week, did not seek further comment from him.

They were one of the biggest talking points from The News last week. The head and shoulder photos of election candidates – published exclusively in The News – generated a great deal of discussion about the quality – some for being good, and some for being, well, not quite as good. So we asked Stephen Barker, a Waikato commercial and editorial photographer, and Waikato digital marketer Josh Moore to tell us what they thought. Here’s what they had to say. Stephen Barker Portrait photos are an essential part of my business. My clients are big and small businesses, and they all see the value in getting a professional look for themselves. So, in these candidate photos, there’s an obvious difference between those that have gone to the effort of presenting themselves well and those that don’t seem bothered about the impression theyThemake.best headshots are the ones with a pro approach. There’s some basics at play in achieving this. Clear and sharp images with good lighting and a plain white or very light backdrop work well. Backgrounds should avoid busy patterns like leafy trees, curtains and distracting office features. People generally look better with shoulders facing slightly away from the camera and the head facing front on. If you have to use a cell phone, definitely don’t do a selfie! Your features will be out of proportion. Get someone else to shoot it. Make sure the lens is super clean. Try using the portrait mode if it has that feature.

Lobbying the Ministry of Education for a fix has gobbled “a significant amount” of his time since. “The first year or so was fighting for them to actually understand how serious our situation was,” he said. “We’d gone from 400 to 600 students in two years with no extra classrooms, and so it was becoming really quite critical that we got classrooms.”Thenextyear, in 2019, the school’s roll jumped by another hundred students and is now 720. “So within four and a half years we’d gone from low 400s to low 700s. At that point, without an extra building, it was obviously starting to be quite an issue for us.”

“This is the first time in my time as principal at Cambridge we’ve actually had enough classrooms for every child to be in a designated classroom and not some other space we’ve had to squash them into,” Mr Gibbs said. The school was bursting at the seams when he took over as principal in 2018. “My very first year I started we enrolled over 60 families over the summer break and that’s just unheard of – that’s two classes worth of children between the last day of school and the first day of school – and most of them at that stage were shifting down from Auckland,” he said.

The council also expects the upgrade will decrease the number of books lost - currently Waipā loses $5000 worth of books to theft every year.

“We believe that it is more important than ever to acknowledge our district’s businesses achievements and continue to inspire each other to continue to be one of the most diverse and innovative business communities in the country,” sheThesaid.News publisher Good Local Media is the print partner for the awards and is sponsoring the Customer Choice section in Cambridge and Te Awamutu. By Benjamin Wilson A technology upgrade will soon enable Waipā library goers to issue themselves a book. Waipā District Council is investing close to $300,000 to introduce a system which enable members to take a book out using a digital ap.

The change for the Te Awamutu and Cambridge libraries involves switching from electromagnetic (EM) to radio frequency identification technology (RFID). Each book taken from the library goes through a scanning process. The EM technology has been used in the district since the 1990s and is outdated. The new RFID system will make the process of taking book much simpler.

In the USA, a #WeAreNotWaiting worldwide movement to reduce the burden of type one diabetes is already advocating for the technology, so the men and other type one diabetics rolled the hashtag movement into New Zealand. It aims to make open source software innovations freely available for type one diabetics. Diabetics like Gunn developed their own technology and shared it so other diabetics could evaluate it and choose to use it themselves.

The Cambridge and Te Awamutu chambers of commerce are finalising the awards categories and entries will be taken from October 12 to February 15. Cambridge chamber chief Kelly Bouzaid said it had been incredible to hear the stories of innovation, adaptability, resilience and growth that had continued to happen despite the challenges in recent years.

“We know our libraries are well-loved and well-used. This investment means we keep up with technology, protect our stock and also free up librarians to focus on other services,” said Sally Sheedy, group manager customer and community services.

Art is Good for the Soul, and a Great Way to Meet New People. There’s an acknowledgement that slowing down and taking time to learn new skills, to be stimulated and have time for contemplation benefits your wellbeing. As it happens, art classes are recognised as an ideal past-time at the forefront of this healthier life choice. Our students often comment on how absorbed they get during lessons. They really look forward to attending each week, for the beneficial retreat from everyday life and the chance to catch up with new likeminded new friends. Places are Limited. Since our classes are limited to 20 students to maintain a high standard of tuition, available places fill fast. Our Spring course begins early September. It’s the final course this year, so we expect it to be popular. Courses are starting in Cambridge, Hamilton, Te Awamutu and Matamata. Take a look at all our venues and times online today. A Health Research Council of New Zealand-funded study called Create (community derived automated insulin delivery) is about to be published internationally and is expected to add research weight to type one diabetics’ arguments for more Pharmac funding. Crocket is part of the Create trial study team which undertook a randomised controlled trial of an open-source, community-built algorithm for automated insulin delivery.

The upgrade will also bring self-issue stations to both libraries, allowing patrons to issue, renew, and return their items themselves. A new app will allow customers to borrow items from the libraries using their own devices, if they are compatible. The libraries started the transition to the new technology in July, and are working on putting RFID tags on collections. The transition is due to be completed by the end of October.

The system combines an insulin pump, glucose monitors and an algorithm – a what if scenario – that adjusts insulin delivery every five minutes.

Gunn is the technology whizz who helped create the do it yourself artificial pancreas system via open-source software on watches and mobile phones. Not “chasing insulin” whilst exercising means far less need for excessive carbohydrate consumption, and improved performance, said Dyet. “For now it’s the best form of control for those who want to invest the time and energy.”

“My past experience as a judge for these awards showed me the enormous pride and recognition that your team feel when Organisersentering”.saythe delays caused by Covid had the unexpected positive effect of showing there were benefits in staging a biennial event. Waipā Networks chief Sean Horgan said his company was proud to continue a long-standing support as the platinum sponsor of the awards.

Over the 3-month course students discover how to paint faces, figures, friends, family and stunning landscapes. You can expect to learn the artists’ secrets, helping you create beautiful pieces of original art. You can delight your loved ones with personal portraits, or capture your pet’s image. One thing is for sure, your friends and family will be amazed and delighted at what you achieve.

“The project is going well, and we are looking forward to seeing everything fall into place later this year,” Sheedy said.

Waipā’s business awards will return to the district next year. The awards, which were shelved because of Covid, will be staged at Mystery Creek next April. Waipā deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk said entering the awards is something “Waipā Businesses should all do at least once”.“We all work very hard in our businesses, and this is an opportunity to allow others to see what you do” said Stolwyk, who is one of two Waipā Networks Business Awards Ambassadors named in the announcement.TheotherisJason Tiller, from Rocketspark, the 2021 supreme winner. The awards will continue to carry the Waipā Networks name. Stolwyk said celebrating achievements and letting staff feel proud of their contribution were both excellent reasons to enter the 2023 awards.

Hi, I'm Chris. I am very proud to call Waipā my home, and beyond honoured to offer to serve you as Mayor. Today, our District is facing a growing range of issues; "steady as we go" and "we just have to navigate" is not the style of leadership we are going to need. I am a leader with real vision and aspiration, capable of growing a stronger Waipā into the future. I'm not a politician, and for this I will not apologise. Instead, I have a proven-record of real-world delivery and achievement. Over the next three years, as your Mayor, I will be the strong voice championing your concerns and needs, connecting our District together as never before.

Making Karāpiro modern again

Continued

Andrew Rye knows every nook and cranny of the Karāpiro Power Station.Heshould do, he’s been there since February 1984. Today Ōhaupō-born and raised Rye is Mercury Energy’s regional manager responsible for Karāpiro and the company’s other northern operations.Helivesin Cambridge and takes us on the tour with Mercury’s head of generation operations Matt Kedian, another with long links to Karāpiro. Kedian, was brought up in Tokoroa, joined the forerunner to Mercury in 1996 and today holds the same job his father Mike held for many years.

There is a touch of art deco to the Karāpiro building – from the entrance with its Coat of Arms and the year 1946 above, then inside to what was once a waiting room and its inquiries window where staff would collect their wages. It is like taking a step back in time wandering around the building and into the control room where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were pictured in January 1954 admiring what was then the largest hydro generators in the country. Not much seems to have changed with the buttons and knobs on the wall much the same as they were when the royal couple visited. Like the queen, Karāpiro has aged and yet provided the country with sterling service. Unlike the queen, the power station equipment can be modernised.Kediansays he is in awe of the work done 80 years ago because much of the equipment and technology is still running. The main objectives of the refurbishment by Austrian company Andritz Hydro are to improve reliability, update the equipment and improve efficiency and power output. Three propeller-type water turbines with adjustable blades – installed in the 1940s - will be replaced as will other older equipment. Water from Lake Karāpiro runs through penstocks to the three turbines which then generates electricity.Theoperation is now run remotely from Mercury Energy’s control room in Hamilton. The current dam road closure, which goes through to December, will enable one of the turbine headgates to be replaced. Other road closures will occur through to 2024.

• The power station employs three people on site, and a team of 29 is responsible for daily operations and maintenance of Maraetai, Waipapa, Arapuni and Karāpiro power stations from Hamilton

Workers construct one of the original Kaplan propeller water turbines. Workers leave the power station at the end of another working day with the spillway and dam road behind them.

Karāpiro was the second power station, after Arapuni, built in the Waikato hydro scheme. There are eight plants in Constructiontotal.ofthe dam and power station began in 1940, but a materials and labour shortage due to World War II slowed progress. The station was completed in 1947, four years behind schedule. In April that year, the Horahora village and the power station, opened in 1913 and the first on the Waikato River, were flooded to create Lake Karāpiro behind the dam.Flooded, too, was the famous 1830 battle site of Taumatawīwī which gave the lake and the power station its name. In the 1820s the Ngāti Maru tribe from the Hauraki Gulf were driven south by Northland’s Ngāpuhi tribe. Ngāti Maru were given refuge in the Waikato by the Ngāti Hauā tribe, but tensions soon mounted between them.

The details

• During construction up to 60 additional people will be employed on site

• Production will increase from 505GWh to 537GWh – enough additional power for approximately 4500 homes.

Victorious Ngāti Hauā chief Te Waharoa ordered that the bodies of his dead warriors be burned in case Ngāti Maru should return and counter-attack. The cremation took place on rocks beside the Waikato River. The name Karāpiro consists of the words ‘karā’, meaning rock, and ‘piro’, meaning putrid smell.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip toured the dam in 1954 and visited the control room.

• Construction of the Karāpiro Dam began in 1940. It was commissioned 1947.

• It is powered by three vertical Kaplan turbine generating units • A $75 modernisationmillion project over five years will improve reliability, update technology and improve efficiency.

• Major contractor Andritz Hydro of Austria went on site last year 2021.

• The project involves replacing three turbines and their headgate, generator and governor –one a year until May 2025.

Cambridge’s much-envied Town Belt will not be taken for residential development under the Government’s intensification plans. The 284ha of land straddling the town on both sides of the Waikato River and weaving through many parts of it, including newer subdivisions, is protected under the Reserves Act.District Growth and Regulatory group manager Wayne Allan told The News earlier this month there was a legislative gazetting over the Town Belt. “The Town Belt is not residential land, so it is safe,” he said.

Cambridge’s Town Belt’s primary purpose is recreation, and it is the largest ‘urban reserve’ in Waipā as well as one of the few complete examples of a Town Belt in the country. The land was confiscated in 1869 after the New Zealand Land Wars and in 1880 was surveyed into 94 sections which were made available for lease.

The land was meant to function as a buffer between town and country. The sections were used for grazing purposes, because much of the surrounding land at that time had not yet been converted to Thefarming.Town Belt also marks a clear delineation between the ‘grid’ layout of historic Cambridge, and the more ‘organic / curvilinear’ layout of the town’s outer (more recent) growth cells.

At the first of three webinars (online seminars) hosted by the Waipā council on Monday night the question of Cambridge’s Town Belt came up. The webinars aim to help explain a change to planning rules which council says could fundamentally change residential parts of Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Kihikihi. More than 40 people attended the webinar with questions ranging from the status of existing property covenants to the impact on schools and class sizes, and provision for three waters infrastructure.

Well, the local body hustings season is upon us. The aspirants for high office have been declared and their photos were shown lastColourfulweek. hoardings will start to appear, and many people will make strange statements – including making promises that they will never be allowed to keep. A third bridge (but no details of the connection to main roading systems) –stopping the move to frustrate lovely suburbs by interspersing ugly three storey RMA-free dwellings when the national government has already decreed it – and endless and frequent bus services, when it is a regional council matter. You will hear it all in the coming weeks. All will be in the mix. And no doubt there will be a mass meeting of aspirants in a central facility embracing all the hopefuls who will each obtain absolute minimum time to declare their pitch. All good fun and then what? My personal experience of these during my 12 years of local body elected membership was that you would be better off splitting the mayoral, council and community board gatherings into separate groups and give the voters more time to understand what makes these grandees tick.

So, do we need to decide on experience (the current mayor), a younger well-educated and positive debater – or move towards someone with prime ideas but no experience of digging through the morass of local body

Waipā District Council now supports (initially due to Covid) screened live gatherings of the council meetings and main committees and what an enthralling episode those are! But this is ‘open government’ at play and an opportunity to see which elected people contribute and which do not.

Another is an active elected councillor currently who chairs meetings well and shows her professional mettle as a barrister.

The Team at Scott, Carr

Yes, sadly, there are at least two (one of them a Cambridge representative) who sit in mainly stony silence yet strut the streets as evidence of making headway on behalf of the people. There are four who have thrown their hats into the ring for the opportunity of inhabiting the mayoral office in Te Awamutu - (well paid, car etc) - but some far from enjoyable lengthy hours associated with the role.

Thisbureaucracy?opinionpiece is not to be seen to back any single candidate but asks you to do more homework than just attend a talk-fest during September.Whatever emerges at the close of voting mid-October remember you have them attempting to understand and interpret your interests for the next three years. Much has been said that three years (nationally and locally) is too short a period to gain balanced, far-sighted and effective government. There are arguments both ways and wiser people than me have debated them for many years. But a degree of continuity is important provided that those occupying the high-backed seats at the Council table do not see themselves as being incapable of being shifted. This is the time that the permanent letterwriters will seek for their moment of glory - in some cases attempting to hide their true political colours. But they too have a right to be heard (or at least read). The Oxford Dictionary defines democracy as ‘a form of government in which the people have a voice in the exercise of power’. Summed up by the Latin phrase vox populi. Exercise that vote carefully but, at the very least, do take an interest and do vote. Crying ‘foul’ later when you did not care to vote is no excuse.

Cambridge golfer Jill Morgan (pictured above) has been named in the New Zealand senior team to play Australia for the Sanctuary Cove Cup in Tasmania in October. The opening round on October 24 will consist of foursomes in the morning and four-ball in the afternoon. They’ll then go head-to-head in singles on the final day.

Morgan joins Carolyn Cressey (Omaha Beach), Robyn Pellow (Ngaruawahia), Robyn Pullar (Invercargill), Diana Syer (Hastings) and Robyn Boniface (Queens Park, Invercargill) in the team. Morgan, originally from Taumarunui and now living in Cambridge, is a former New Zealand women’s hockey representative who played at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The ‘duck’ principle couples well with a Bible verse in providing a truly great lesson. “Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Maybe it’s time to shed unhelpful things we’re harbouring.

Four projects in Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and Monavale have been allocated money in the recent round of the Waipā District Counciladministered Heritage Fund. The most significant is a $28,681 grant to The Parish of St John in Te Awamutu to paint its spire roof and weather board base along with the main church roof. A kiosk history board project in Kihikihi at the Rewi Maniapoto Reserve will get $6924. Both the church and the site have Category 1 Heritage New Zealand listings. The fire security system in the kitchen at Monavale Homestead on Cambridge Road, 6kms south of the town, gets $8760 to fund work in the Category 2 Heritage listed building.

The greatest lesson

The heading for this article owes its inspiration partly, to a book I have that carries a somewhat similar title. It profiles famous people relating their experiences of ‘the greatest lesson’ that they’ve ever learned.Doesanything stand out for you as your ‘greatest’ lesson? It may be hard to find any single ‘greatest lesson’ because life tends to be filled with so many of them Lessons learned from mistakes we make are a great teacher. Someone once said, “The person who never made a mistake, never made anything.”Thinking about what my greatest life lesson might be produced a top 10, yet nominating one as ‘the greatest’ was difficult. Nonetheless, I definitely identified one lesson that has helped me particularly. Years ago I was in a meeting where a man I respected as a leader/statesman was speaking. His aim was to encourage young leaders and motivate them to success. I did not know him personally and he knew nothing about me. After he’d spoken, he addressed me personally. His words were initially puzzling, yet hugely impactive, as he pointed to me saying that in spite of having never met me, he sensed that I ‘needed to become like a duck!’ (Laughter ensued.) He quickly went on to elaborate… a duck’s life is synonymous with ponds, lakes, puddles and rain - yet they never get ‘waterlogged’ due to their innate ability to shed water- it just runs off them! This remarkable waterproof faculty prevents them from absorption and ultimate saturation.Thisman’s message highlighted life’s knack of serving up all manner of things which could bog you down causing you to sink in despair personality, discouragement.andByItended to brood a bit… to overthink. I also felt a great need to feel liked byObviously, everyone. those personality characteristics are an impediment in life if you are ever going to achieve anything useful, since not everyone will celebrate your decisions or understand your viewpoints. On top of that, life introduces bruising things beyond your control. Not everyone will understand what you are going through. You may be judged, even wounded by people who have no clue about your unique circumstances or trials. It is easy to become hurt, discouraged, or offended and the tendency to withdraw nursing inward attitudes of resentment and unforgiveness, can arise. This man’s exhortation to ‘learn to be like a duck’ supplied me with an invaluable key… I understand that getting over things quickly and allowing issues to ‘run off’ like water is essential. Brooding over grudges or negativity will incubate lingering angst. Being vigilante in discarding and shedding undesirable attitudes and emotions ensures we won’t ‘sink’. A ‘buoyant life’ results from working on releasing ourselves from such things. It protects us from becoming heavy and weighed down on the inside.

The final grant went to the Lakewood Body Corporate which received $4345 to produce sign panels in the development depicting the site’s strong mana whenua and railway ties. It is the site of the former Cambridge Railway Station. The committee said the narrative was not well represented anywhere in Cambridge. The Waipā Heritage Fund carries an annual value of $70,000, with two funding rounds per year. The fund was established in 2013 to assist with the preservation, enhancement and highlighting of the unique environmental and cultural heritage, diversity and history of the district. The funding can be used to assist with physical works for heritage buildings, objects, natural vegetation, habitats, cultural or archaeological sites. In the second quarter of this year, Waikato’s average bus patronage was 23 per cent lower than pre-covid levels and 13 per cent lower than the previous year. During the same meeting, the regional council also moved to add a $5 administration fee to Super Gold Card users purchasing a Bee Card. The Bee Card has cost $5 for the past two years but has been free for Gold Card users.Because of a growing demand in applications, the $5 fee was suggested to ensure the sustainability of the existing Bee Card and Gold Card models. Two thousand more regional bus trips were made to and from Cambridge in the second quarter of this year compared to the same time pre-Covid. The figures were presented at the Waikato Regional Council’s Regional Connections meeting this month. From April to June, 17,000 bus trips were taken between Hamilton and Cambridge, a big improvement to the 15,000 trips that were made during the same period of 2019. Te Awamutu also matched its pre-Covid patronage levels, with 19,000 trips taken in the same quarter. Despite the district’s patronage improvement, Andrew Carnell, regional council team leader for network planning and performance, said a national bus driver shortage was affecting the reliability of Waikato’s bus services. He said the region was 20 per cent short of bus drivers, and in the second quarter of this year, only 52.8 per cent of Waikato buses were on time. However, the driver shortage isn’t affecting Waipā’s regional bus services to and from Hamilton, a council spokesperson told The News. Between the start of 2019 and June 2022, only 48.9 per cent of the buses in Te Awamutu were on time. But in Cambridge, 61.3 per cent of their buses were on time, while the average for the Waikato region was 66.6 per cent. A bus is described as not being on time if it outside a time range of one minute early and five minutes late compared to its schedule.

Almost 300 youngsters have planted 4000 plants in the Manga-o-tama catchment. The Manga-o-tama stream flows from Ōhaupō to the Waipā River near Ngāhinapōuri in the west and the planting project brought together students from Paterangi, Puahue, Ōhaupō and Ngāhinapōuri. Children from four schools braved tricky conditions while contributing to wetland conservation during a mass planting exercise. Work to improve freshwater quality and biodiversity in the 7700-hectare Manga-otama catchment is part of the Department of ConservationFonterra Living Water partnership. It draws on contributions from Mangao-tama Stream and Wetland Restoration Trust, Ngāti Apakura, Waipā District Council, NZ Landcare Trust and Waikato Regional Council. DOC Senior Ranger Dion Patterson says environmental and cultural education is at the forefront of Living Water, and the schools involved in this month’s planting approached DOC about participating. If a school has an enrolment scheme, it must accept all students living in its home zone. Students living outside the zone but wanting to go to that school can still apply for a place. Schools will offer out-of-zone applications only if they have the space, and out-ofzone students are selected through a controlled application/ballot scheme. Occasionally a home zone will change during the time your child is at school. If this happens, there is no need for concern as all currently enrolled students will be able to continue at that school for the remainder of the school years it offers. One of the most important elements in choosing a home to either rent or buy is how well it ts with your family … how many people will live there, how well it ts your lifestyle and, crucially, how close it is to the schools you want your children to attend. School enrolment zoning is likely to factor strongly in whatever decision you make. But what exactly does school zoning mean and just how exible is it? The term ‘zoning or zoned’ as it relates to a school means that school is situated within clearly de ned boundaries within an area, and children or students whose home is within those boundaries are guaranteed a place at that school. The idea is to prevent schools from becoming overcrowded and to provide children and their parents or caregivers with the security of knowing their youngsters can attend their local school. Parents seeking a place will have to provide proof of address for their place of residence, and any enrolment can be cancelled if the school nds out that false information has been given. Zoning applies only to state-funded schools, which covers most New Zealand schools. Private schools are not government-funded and are not subject to zoning.

To check if a school has an enrolment scheme and whether you live in it, either phone the school – or visit the Education Counts websitewww.educationcounts.govt.nz

The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the schools home zone. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, the students will be selected by ballot as per priority guidelines. The deadline for ballot applications will be Wednesday 28 September. If a ballot is required, it will be held on Thursday 29 September.

Because of our growing in-zone roll, Cambridge East School has an enrolment scheme in place. 15 out-of-zone places have been made available in Years 0 and 1, and a limited number of spaces in Years 2, 3 and 4, by the Board of Trustees for the 2023 school year.

The acceptance of applicants is determined by a strict order of priority. This will take into account applicants seeking places in any special programme run by the school, whether they have siblings who are either current or former students at the school, whether their parents attended the school, or whether they have links to members of the school board.

SECURING A SPACE OUT OF ZONE

Siblings at the same year level are generally kept together for the purpose of the ballot, so that if one sibling’s name is drawn, the other is automatically successful as well.

Enrolment at Leamington School is governed by an enrolment scheme due to continual enrolment demand from across Cambridge. Due to this continual demand the Board have determined that in 2023 there will likely be places for: Year 1 – ve chidren Year 2 – three children Year 3 and 4 – four children Year 5 and 6 – six children

While applicationsenrolmentfrom in-zone students are automatically accepted by their local school, the situation is different for out-of-zone applicants seeking a place. In such circumstances, parents and caregivers need to apply to the school in question to enrol their child. An enrolment scheme is intended to make sure students are selected fairly and transparently, rather than having schools simply select whichever students it wants. Schools offer out-of-zone applications if they have the space to accommodate additional students. If more students apply than the school has spaces for, the school holds a ballot (draw) to ll the places available and create a waiting list for those who were unsuccessful in the ballot. Most schools have an enrolment pack they send out, detailing the relevant information and dates around this procedure.

For students seeking enrolment within the first enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications for out-of-zone places is Monday 26th September 2022. If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required, it will be held on Wednesday 28th September 2022. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held. Details of the second enrolment period are: Monday 24th April 2023 to Friday 22nd September 2023

Date of ballot: Wednesday 29th March 2023

Enrolment schemes are not compulsory for schools to put in Someplace. schools have no requirement of it if their roll is not full and there is no need for them to restrict the number of children enrolling in the school. Circumstances and situations around students and their parents or caregivers can change at any time. If a family subsequently moves out of their current school zone, the school board can review their enrolment, giving the parents or caregivers a full opportunity to explain the reasons for the move.

Back in the slot

Groom James Stephens whispers words of encouragement into Self Assured’s ear in the minutes before the start of The Race in April.

The News asked Raceway chief executive Dave Branch for further information after media reports suggested there would be a new slot race for trotters of $500,000 to add to $1 million on offer for pacers. The $900,000 invite-only race in April was won by pre-race favourite Self Assured.

Branch said after the meeting – which saw all 500 hospitality seats and more than 2000 general admission tickets sold – he hoped to increase the stake next year to $1 million and cater for 5000 people. The Race was the richest harness race in New Zealand. Slots were bought for $75,000 each for a guaranteed stake divided up with $400,000 to the winner, $125,000 for second, $85,000 third, $65,000 for fourth and the remaining five starters each getting $37,500. Reports suggest the meeting will remain on April 14 but be on a Friday night and the week after Easter. Branch did not respond in time for The News’ deadline.

Oranges, lemons, mandarins and grapefruit are versatile, tasty, and low in kilojoules. New Zealand-grown navel oranges are a one of my faves: luscious, juicy and moreish. Segments add pizzazz to winter salads. Combine them in a bowl with crunchy greens, super grains or winter fruit combos for eye-catching colour and fabulous flavour. The juice makes a wonderful low-cal dressing. If you’re gin drinker or if you enjoy lemon-flavoured water, chop your lemons into 2cm-3cm pieces, place on a tray and freeze. Once solid, tip them into an airtight container and return to the freezer. These bites are just the thing to add to your summer coolers. Finely grated peel — or zest— can also be frozen for bakes, garnishes or salads. Place in an airtight container and freeze. Then crumble it with your fingers to prevent it from sticking together too firmly. Re-freeze. Citrus will keep at room temperature for some time. For longer storage place in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Many citrus fruits sold commercially are coated with an edible wax to enhance the shelf life. This can be easily removed by washing the fruit with warm water then drying.

Cambridge Tree Trust would like to thank Mitre 10 for their support for these monthly articles which are intended to raise interest and awareness of trees in Cambridge. Advertorial Call me desperate, but the swelling buds on the branch tips of these young trees ll me with excitement at the promise of the arrival of Spring! Characteristic of the vast forests of the eastern USA, shagbarks are related to the pecan and also the walnut. They have compound leaves, a ower consisting of three tassles, yellow leaves in autumn to rival those of the gingko, and an edible nut. However they do not fruit for about 30 years, at which stage they develop their tattered, sharp-edged bark, looking like a ‘witch in moth-eaten rags.’ It is thought this is to keep squirrels away – but they might be great for our bats. The one shown here was grown from a nut in situ, as they hate being moved. It has reached 15 feet in as many years, and as the tallest known is 130 feet high they are de nitely a longterm project.

AVGOLEMONO

Shagbark hickory – Carya ovata

In the USA hickory wood is popular for the BBQ, but has had many important uses in the past. It is a closegrained hardwood, making very durable cogs for water wheel systems, and with its strong, straight grain was used for rake, scythe and axe handles, and for bows. It was also excellent for sports equipment –lacrosse sticks, golf club shafts, and laminated skis.

A quick classic Greek. Avgolemono is pronounced ‘ah-vo-lemo-no’ — the ‘g’ is there, but it’s almost silent. Use chicken breast from a supermarket roasted chicken, if preferred. 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 1 medium carrot, chopped 1/2 cup Arborio rice 4 cups chicken stock 3 eggs 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 (400g) skinned and boned chicken breasts, cooked and saltshreddedandpepper to taste 2 tablespoons chopped dill or 2 teaspoons dried dill tips Heat the oil in a large saucepan and sauté the onion and carrot until just tender. Add rice and stock and bring to the boil. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until the rice is cooked. Meanwhile, beat the eggs together with the lemon juice in a small bowl, until well combined. Add the shredded chicken to the saucepan. Add a ladle of the soup to the egg mixture and stir well. Pour back into the saucepan. Stir until thickened. Season. Taste and add more lemon juice if required. Garnish with dill and serve.
