Quarry dust-up looms

A David and Goliath battle is underway following an application, lodged last week, to establish a giant quarry on the eastern outskirts of Cambridge.

Even before independent commissioner Rob van Voorthuysen starts work on assessing the proposal on behalf of Waipā District Council, locals are queuing up to oppose the plans.

The 815-page application, also lodged with Waikato Regional Council, has come from RS Sand Ltd - owned by Stevenson Aggregates Ltd - and will see up to 400 truck movements a day through the town.

The required water take is 1.2 million litres a day – half for the processing plant, the rest for dust suppression.

Quarries produce microscopic particles of silica that exist within sand dust. Recent research shows the dust can travel many kilometres and is responsible for a disease called silicosis, a long-term lung disease which cannot be cured.

Opponents include the Newcombe Rd quarry’s immediate neighbour Rhys Powell who alerted The News to the proposal last year.

The 134.67ha of land for the proposed quarry –which would only operate on 27ha - is zoned rural.

It is 3.5kms east of central Cambridge and about one kilometre from new housing to the northeast of the town. It is surrounded by a mix of farming activities

and lifestyle properties with Cambridge Golf Club nearby.

Lining up behind Powell is the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce which plans

Cup kings

to use its advocacy role on behalf of the chamber’s 320 members.

Chief executive Kelly Bouzaid said the chamber is not anti-quarry and

recognises there are other quarries operating successfully in the district.

“We do however have a duty of care, given the potential significance of

the proposed site and its proximity to Cambridge, and the possible impacts it could have on our township,” she said.

The red and whites beat Leamington 20-10 on Saturday when the Centennial Cup was put up for grabs for the first time. The trophy was donated by the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association, which celebrated its centenary with a feast of rugby last weekend. The match was a close one – it was 5-3 to Hautapu at the break and with a shade over 20 minutes to play the teams were level at 10-all. Hautapu scored two late tries to clinch the game and the cup. A toilet block in Cambridge destroyed by an arson attack in April has yet to be replaced. The land where the Thornton Road disability friendly toilet block stood near the Lake Te Koo Utu playground has been cleared. Waipā District Council says its Community Services team is working with insurers and contractors on valuations and quotes for the rebuild. Timeframes are expected next week. The nearest public toilets are adjacent to the Lake Te Koo Utu carpark off Albert Street.

Museum closed Cambridge Museum will be closed from next Tuesday for seismic strengthening work. The work, expected to cost about $400,000 should take about six weeks.

Booked out

Rotary has raised more than $16,000 for community organisations from its latest book fair in Te Awamutu. Fair convenor Laurel Smith said to date $2000 has been earmarked for Kihikihi Riding for the Disabled and $4000 for the Te Awamutu Community Health Shuttle. The sum raised was on a par with what the Te Awamutu club was raising before Covid struck.

Land sale

Waipā District Council has made a sizeable profit by selling part of a 3.7ha parcel it bought for just under $700,000 six years ago. A 1.4ha block has been sold to public housing Crown agency Kainga Ora for almost $2.7 million. The land in Cambridge Rd, Te Awamutu, will be the site of 30 homes as part of an affordable housing project for people 55 years and over.

Award for police station

The award is given at the discretion of judges for a specific outstanding project or element of a project they feel is worthy of recognition.

The police hub was designed by Richard Mauriohooho of Paua Architects in collaboration with Renata Te Wiata of Tohunga Whakairo.

Paua practice principal and registered architect Antanas Procuta of Cambridge said the special award, and a silver award given at the same ceremony, were a testament to Tainui Group Holdings, the project’s developer/owner, project managers Greenstone and Alaska Construction Interiors.

The project was the only Waikato one at the awards won by Voco-Hie, a 39-storey, 140m tall hotel development in Auckland.

“The Cambridge Police Hub is unlike any other in New Zealand. It is the first police

hub to be developed under a partnership agreement between Tainui Group Holdings and NZ Police to support the build of modern, sustainable, community-minded police facilities across the Waikato,” judges said.

“Designed to house 15 staff, while incorporating co-location spaces for community groups and local iwi, this new hub moves away from the traditional look and feel of a police station and incorporates the concept of manākitanga.

“The space provides services to the community, while enabling public safety. The building successfully incorporates many elements reflecting the local environment and community, including visual features of significance to WaikatoTainui and use of the region’s Hinuera stonework.”

Materials used included brick, stone, aluminium and Corten steel. The project team sourced local materials wherever possible.

Time catches up with shoplifter

As you are aware, I am very passionate about making Cambridge an unattractive location for opportunist and recidivist criminals.

I appreciate the steps our retailers and the community as a whole are already taking in this regard. This week’s good news story saw an offender recently plead guilty in Hamilton District Court to a charge of shoplifting.

The offender was not located on the day of the crime and his identity was not initially known. A lengthy investigation over four months was undertaken however, which resulted in a positive ID - a distinctive calf tattoo proved crucial. This example shows that where an offender isn’t immediately located, even a small unique attribute can enable us to identify them at a later stage – thus they are still held to account. CCTV footage is excellent for this. Sometimes it is a distinctive piece of clothing rather than

a tattoo or physical trait and often such characteristics help us to link different offences together.

We continue to be hit by retail offenders coming in from outside of Cambridge. Good reporting has been key to enabling us to secure the great catches you’ve heard about in recent weeks. Keep the 111 calls coming whenever something requires immediate police attendance.

In other news, I’d like to thank everyone that gave up their time to attend the recent Roto-o-Rangi Community Crime Prevention meeting. We had a great turn out and many also took the opportunity to become members of Neighbourhood Support. One local issue that was raised with me was dangerous driving on Roto-o-Rangi road. While motorists are moving wide to give cyclists a safe berth, this at times has seen them put themselves and others at risk. One example given was of a car crossing the

centreline to go around the cyclist yet at the same time, causing an oncoming truck to have to take evasive action. If you are behind a cyclist, be sure to wait until the road ahead is well clear, before moving to overtake. I have a couple of other traffic reminders, this time around lights. With the dense fog we are experiencing, it is imperative that you manually turn your headlights on so that you can be seen by other motorists. If your headlights are set to auto, they won’t turn on for fog. This increases the chance of a traffic crash occurring. Please also be aware that it is illegal to have other than white headlights in use while driving. I recently came across a vehicle with remote controlled bulbs in their headlights that cycled through different colours. Such lights can confuse other motorists and cause distraction on the road. Have a good week and stay safe.

Voting opens

The race to replace Waipā District councillor Takena Stirling in the Māori ward starts today. The by election has four candidates - Bill Harris, Barney Manaia, DaleMaree Morgan and Gaylene Roberts. Voting is open to electors on the Māori roll and runs to June 23. Stirling resigned in March.

Fines drop

The fining system for overdue library books in Waipā – which generates about $18,000 a year but comes with administration costs and angst, is to go.

Waipā District Council, debating its 2023-24 fees and charges, has decided to join other councils around the country in removing overdue library fines from July.

Art winner

Hawke’s Bay artist Ricks

Terstappen won the Fieldays

No.8 Wire National Art Award for his artwork titled Connectivity last week. The finalists' artworks will be on display until 2 July at ArtsPost in central Hamilton.

Funds raised

The Breast Cancer Foundation will receive more than $4000 from a pink ribbon breakfast at the Cambridge Oaks Lifestyle Village last week. Organiser Lyn Smolenski said Cambridge retailers generously donated prizes worth thousands of dollars for the event, which attracted about 100 people.

Karāpiro contract delayed

A contract to provide onsite management at Lake Karāpiro has been delayed four months because the timeframes are too tight.

Waipā District Council, which owns the venue, had hoped to have a new contract in place by July 1.

GL Events Ltd, a company owned by deputy mayor Liz Stolwyk and her husband Andrew Reymer, has provided the service for 19 years and is into the last year of a six-year contract.

Deputy chief executive Ken Morris told The News the council had hoped to go to the market in April.

“As staff worked through the process it became evident that the timeframes were becoming too tight to ensure it would be done well.”

The contract extension requires approval from the Office of the AuditorGeneral because of Stolwyk’s conflict of interest.

“The delays are unfortunate and not ideal,” she said.

The company employs eight full timers and several casual staff for large events.

The uncertainty had “concerned” many of her staff.

“In an ideal world I would have liked to give (them) certainty.”

Stolwyk said she would much rather see a more robust process used than to rush anything.

Morris said the tender would now go out in June to ensure sufficient timeframes for document preparation, tender bids, and awarding of the new contract.

Karāpiro is arguably one of Waikato’s jewels but certainly a Waipā success story, said Stolwyk.

“Personally, I’ve thought for a very long time, we’ve flown below the radar.”

The venue delivers world class events 11 months of the year.

“The benefits are

absolutely massive.”

The national waka ama championships, as an example, generates $6 million in annual benefits to the region, she said.

The first event under the extended contract will be the North Island

Secondary School cycling championships starting on July 1.

That provides $4 million of benefit in the middle of winter.

“Plus, we’re flat out all year round with our conference venue.”

Stolwyk’s involvement with Karāpiro Domain predates her election as a councillor in 2016. Each term she has declared her conflict of interest and obtained approval from the Office of the Auditor General to continue her involvement.

Quarry dust-up looms

Giant construction company Fulton Hogan - an unlisted public company with assets worth $2 billion – bought Stevenson Group’s quarrying and concrete plant assets five years ago. The purchase helped boost Fulton Hogan’s earnings. Last year the company announced a net profit of $301 million from $4.78 billion revenue and told shareholders in November it had a record $8.5 billion of new work in the pipeline.

The application says most days there would only be 16 truck trips every hour, most of them to and from the Cambridge growth cells.

“There is sufficient network capacity to accommodate these traffic demands with routes used by trucks being part of, or formerly part of the state highway network.

Volumes on Tirau Road would be significantly less than it operated under state highway conditions,” the application says and goes on to say the company’s analysis of the road network identified “no particular road safety issues” with most of the material expected to be used in Cambridge.

The quarry’s impact on the wider rural landscape would be less than minor once the site is rehabilitated, the application says, and a recent survey showed there was a low level of long-tailed bat activity. The long-tailed bat is a nationally threatened species.

Three iwi have confirmed rights and interests within the proposed quarry areaWaikato-Tainui, Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and Ngāti Hauā.

The application says a site

visit by a cultural advisor for tangata whenua revealed “there are no spiritual matters of concern for the site or activity.”

Palmer said he was concerned van Voorthuysen, a Napier-based independent commissioner, would decide whether the proposal should be open to public scrutiny.

Van Voorthuysen has nearly 40 years’ experience in

environmental and resource management, policy analysis and senior corporate management in both the central and local government sectors.

quarter of a century.

“We must come together to ensure that the decisions that will shape our community are made by those who know it best – us the ratepayers and business owners.

“Let‘s rally for a fair, informed, and transparent decision-making process not leaving it to one person to decide on everything,” said Palmer.

Bouzaid said the chamber had two significant concerns.

The first were the traffic movements along Albert Street and Cambridge arterial routes and the second was the dust pollution.

“(We’re worried about) the impact this may have on the township,” she said. • The application is too large to load onto The News website so we have included a link online to it which will expire on July 18.

New code for councillors

A new Code of Conduct to keep tabs on elected members’ behaviour has been adopted by Waipā District Council.

The biggest change from the previous one adopted in November 2020 is an independent process to focus on serious rather than minor or trivial matters.

A section on dealing with the media, which notes the “important role” it plays in the operation and efficacy of local democracy, is unchanged. It says the media needs access to accurate and timely information about the affairs of council. Failure by a member to comply with this section can represent a breach of the code.

with the chief executive referring all complaints to an initial assessor who determines whether the complaint is valid.

If valid, the complaint either goes to the mayor or recommend the parties undertake mediation.

If mediation is not an option, the complaint is referred to an independent investigator.

Governance manager Jo Gread has added a more detailed section on behaviours, replacing a relationships section, and replaced the breaches of code and penalties with a new investigation and ruling part.

Another change made was to make the code gender neutral when referring to people or positions such as mayor.

Based on a Local Government New Zealand template, the code now adopts a two-step process

“The council can either agree to be bound by an independent investigator’s recommendations or make their own decision on receipt of the independent investigator’s recommendations. The proposed policy leaves the decision with council, but it is important to note that any process for investigating an alleged breach must be politically independent and be seen to be so,” said Gread in her report.

The Code of Conduct now also includes a section dealing with the Local Government (Pecuniary Interests Register) Act 2022.

That requires all elected members, including community board representatives, to record their interests to ensure transparency and strengthen public trust and confidence in local government processes and decision-making.

for Ken,

Improving dialogue

Councils must review how to improve the dialogue with their communities to strengthen local democracy.

One way is to work much more closely with our locally elected community boards and committees. Another is to consider how we might establish special forums for different interest groups to recognise and support what our community holds important.

Council planning, budgeting and rate-setting processes are not always well understood in the community, and so the importance of bringing community committees into the process can’t be overstated.

Waikato District Council has taken a step down this path by inviting representatives of community boards and committees to attend workshops to help set the goals and ‘community outcomes’ that will shape the next Long Term Plan 2024-34.

Working together we’ve drafted four community outcome statements that speak to the council’s vision for the district, ‘liveable, thriving and connected communities.’ The statements are designed to focus the council’s decision-making on community wellbeing in four areas - social, cultural, economic, and environmental. They will be finalised following public consultation.

This collaboration is designed to provide the community with more understanding and input from the very beginning of the planning process rather than just following a tick-box exercise at the end.

The next step is to refresh our local area “blueprints” that were first established five years ago to capture local aspirations for township development, and to prioritise key initiatives. Community boards and committees are now being asked to review their ‘blueprints’ and

provide feedback by the end of June.

This feedback will be used by council to help make decisions in the second half of this year about future work programmes and the budgets on which your future rates will be based.

The final step in the process is to bring a proposed Long Term Plan 2024-34 back to the community for consultation early next year before it is finalised for adoption by the end of June 2024.

To support these initiatives the council has also invited elected community board and committee members to the first of a series of general ‘catch-up’ sessions with council to build an understanding of how we might work better together to deliver what the community wants.

The council is also examining how it might develop other consultative groups to enable us to better understand and focus on the needs of iwi, rural interests, and our many smaller communities across the district.

The Tamahere-Woodlands Heritage Committee is one such group which, with council support, is spearheading a project to install heritage signs in our many small villages, including Matangi, Newstead, Tamahere and Tauwhare, and has started building a website to collate historical information.

Recognition of community values starts at the top. For the first time two monarchs’ portraits command space in our council chambers. In a ceremony shared with Kīngitanga representatives and iwi last week, Waikato District Council unveiled portraits of the Māori King, Kīngi Tūheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero VII, as well as of our newly crowned constitutional monarch King Charles III.

Auckland’s volcanoes

Auckland has several notable hills – Mt Victoria (Takarunga), Mt Eden (Maungawhau), One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie), Mt Wellington (Maungarei), and more.

It also has some pretty neat water features, like Mangere Lagoon, Panmure Basin, or Lake Pupuke. Then looking East is the scenic Rangitoto island. All of these are just a few of the 53 known volcanic centres in the Auckland Volcanic Field, which is classified as still active - future eruptions will likely occur but there is currently no activity or unrest. The depth of magma is thought to be around 70-90 km and there are no signs of it moving towards the surface.

A volcanic field is a large region of dozens to hundreds of volcanic features, even reaching well over 1,400 vents, across tens to hundreds of kilometres and all from the same magma system. Most features in these fields produce one eruption (Rangitoto had two), which can last from days to months, or a few years, and this means that each new eruption tends to occur in a new location instead of an existing cone or crater. This means that the existing cones and craters in Auckland will likely not be the site of the next eruption, it will be somewhere else.

At most volcanoes we can reasonably assume that an eruption will take place at one of the main craters or at least somewhere on or just below the cone, but in a volcanic field this is much more complex. Our biggest city sprawls across the roughly 20 by 30 square kilometre

volcanic field that began erupting around 193,000 years ago.

The last eruption around 600 years ago at Rangitoto was witnessed by people in the area. Eruptions could produce lava flows, ballistics (flying rocks), lava domes, pyroclastic flows (hot, fast flows of ash, gas, and rocks), volcanic ash, volcanic gases, lahars (mudflows), and earthquakes. The eruptions tend to be on the smaller end of the scale, but it doesn’t take a big eruption to be a devastating event when people are nearby, let alone within densely populated areas. In addition, when magma mixes with water (such as lakes, harbours, or groundwater), the eruptions can be more explosive and much more dangerous.

A lot of work is being done to not only understand the volcanic activity in the area, but how it would impact Auckland and beyond, and what actions people and groups can take now to prepare for an eruption. In fact, there are more than 60 years of research in some of these areas.

We do this by understanding what volcanoes in Auckland have done in the past, and we also look at other volcanoes around the world. We study how eruptions impact people and infrastructure, such as water mains, roads and electricity.

The next time you visit Auckland, look around you and see how many volcanic cones you can spot.

It’s the right note for Ben

Cambridge High School’s deputy head boy Ben Bonetti is one step closer to his dream of becoming a professional musician after winning this year’s Ritchie Pickett scholarship.

After Pickett, an acclaimed country and rock singer, died in his Cambridge home in 2011 at 56, his family set up the scholarship in conjunction with Cambridge High School.

Ben plans to use the $1000 prize to buy studio recording time, either to produce solo work or to help his band, Pineja, record more songs.

The bass player is the lead singer of the band, he formed in 2022 with fellow Cambridge High students Jack Beaumont, Ben Wiles, Cameron Stoddart and Riley Jeffcote. The year 13 student also plays rhythm guitar and occasionally chips in with the bass.

Pineja cut its teeth during open mic nights at Hamilton’s Nivara Lounge in 2022. It received funding

to record Something Out

There after success in the Play It Strange songwriting competition last year.

Ben, a year 13 student, has been hooked on the bass guitar ever since he first picked it up in 2017.

Now, his dream is “to play shows around the world,

sell out big venues, have big albums released and have thousands of people singing songs I wrote”.

“I think anything’s realistic if you think you can get there,” he said. •A longer version of this story will be posted on cambridgenews.nz

Once again the buyers from Wellington based company John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd are coming to Cambridge and Waikato next week. Mr Tony Grant from the company says “This is a great time to bring along those unwanted items you’ve sorted out during the lockdown period and turn them into cash”. Particularly wanted by the buyers are Gold and Silver (in any of its forms) and Collectables such as Old Coins and Banknotes, War Medals, Old Wind-up Watches and other interesting Old Collectables.

“We are keen buyers, especially of the items in the list below” said Mr Grant. “I’m sure everyone has unearthed something we want in the past few weeks and we would like to see it!

Nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item as we are buying 1,000 items”. The buyers will be in convenient locations in Cambridge and Waikato next week (see details below). As Tony Grant says “if you are in any doubt about any items you wish to sell, take them along for an instant appraisal”

Gold & Silver At Near Record Prices

During these uncertain times we have seen a sharp increase in the price of precious metals. The gold price in New Zealand is at near record levels so gather up all your unwanted items and take them along to the buyers. Tony Grant says “We can buy old gold items in all forms, including Jewellery (Rings, Chains, Brooches etc), Coins (Sovereigns and the like), Alluvial (River Gold), virtually anything, even Gold Teeth! We also need all Sterling Silver including Cups, Tea Services, Cutlery and Old Coins” he said.

Interesting Small Collectables Wanted

T he buyers from John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd, visiting Cambridge and Waikato next week, are happy to look at any interesting items, for example vintage pocket and wristwatches such as Rolex, Men’s Omega, Breitling and gold watches etc. Also wanted, pre 1950’s picture postcards, Maori and Pacific artefacts, old fountain pens and other small antique or historical items.

“If you have something unusual which you would like to sell, please bring it into one of our venues, we would like the chance to at least have a look at it” said Tony Grant, buyer for the Company. “We will consider anything which may be of interest to a collector” he said.

Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes

EarlyNew Zealand Banknotes dated before 1932 are currently fetching big money! This is according to Mr Tony Grant, author of the John Bertrand New Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue. Mr Grant is in Cambridge and Waikato next week on a buying trip for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd and would be very keen to see any of these issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any undamaged Ten Shilling or

One Pound banknote from a New Zealand trading bank dated 1932 or before. Denominations of five pounds and higher would be worth from $700. “Any banknote dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant. Also purchased are any Reserve Bank of New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas banknotes are also wanted, especially early Pacific Island issues.

Collectors Need War Medals

Currently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.

General service medals from both the First and Second World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group of medals has any special award for bravery such as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure what to do with. These are better off in the hands of collectors who will look after them. We will be happy to look at any war medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.

Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity

In lockdown when you sorted out your drawers and cupboards you may have come across some old coins. You just never know what rarities may be lurking there. The advice of Tony Grant from John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd is to bring them in to the venues and have them appraised. “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations. We are quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up. We are also particularly keen to buy pre 1946 New Zealand Silver Coins for at least 10 times their face value” he said.

River find a calamity New church berm blessed

A tiny clam which reproduces at an extraordinary rate – and has survived overseas attempts to eradicate it - has been found in the Waikato River

Freshwater gold clams, also known as Asian clams, have been found in a 45km stretch of the river from just north of Bob’s Landing near Maungatautari Rd downstream to Hamilton. They have a reputation for clogging infrastructure such as hydroelectricity plants, municipal water supply and irrigation systems and are a threat to native species.

One of the eight hydro dams on the Waikato River – Karāpiro – sits inside that 45km stretch.

Biosecurity New Zealand Deputy Director General Stuart Anderson says it is not known how the freshwater gold clam will behave in New Zealand conditions.

“We’re asking people who work around the river, or boat, fish or swim there, to keep a lookout and report any sightings,” Anderson said

“They are a dirty white to yellow or tan and adult ones are 2-3 cm across. They can be found within the water, sitting on top of sandy or muddy surfaces, or buried shallowly within

them. They’re quite distinctive – there are no New Zealand species that look like this in the river.”

Waikato Regional Council Chief Executive Chris McLay said the discovery was hugely disappointing.

“It’s been found over an especially popular stretch of the river. Lake Karāpiro alone has 50 days of events every year that attract thousands of competitors, and through summer our maritime officers can find hundreds of boats, jet skis and kayaks using the lake on any given day. Even in winter it continues to be heavily used.”

A new memorial berm at St Stephen’s Church, Tamahere, is a nod to the past as well as the future.

The church, built in 1970 following a night of arson which saw three churches attacked in succession, has always been a community gathering place as well as an Anglican place of worship.

As the historic cemetery fills up, the opportunity to acknowledge the wide community has become more restrictive. Not any more.

The new berm, blessed at last Sunday’s service, has space for 64 memorial plaques – and potential to be extended in future - which will be available to people involved with the community.

People like those whose links with St Stephen’s are primarily around the regular market day.

The berm skirts around a sprawling Sir Robert Peel rhododendron tree which is showing its age - it was planted in the late 1800s – and is subject to some ongoing care.

Sunday’s service led by Sir David Moxon also celebrated the 140th anniversary of St Stephen‘s.

The berm is named after the late George Dingle, who was active role in the parish life and fought for the rebuild of St Stephen’s on the same site.

George died last year aged 92. He was baptised at St Stephen’s in 1930 and his maternal grandparents, Martin Pickering and Catherine Barugh, were the first couple married there almost 50 years earlier. Their descendants are still prominent in the St

Alys Antiques & Fine Art

Stephen’s community.

The berm also features a naming stone with a depiction of the wrought iron cross which survived the 1970 fire and is now on the wall of the sanctuary, behind the altar of the present church.

The church’s cemetery committee chair Don Law told The News last week that the berm would address long-standing restrictions on access for burials and the interment of ashes.

“We hope the new memorial berm will meet a need for those who want to leave an enduring memory of themselves right here in Tamahere.”

Transform your landscape with Waikato Tree Services

A few days ago, I was involved in tramping the pavements of the capital city on behalf of the retirement village residents whose national interests I serve. It mainly involved visiting government-related organisations but there was also some media input.

Usually, these perambulations also include a visit to the Beehive. First you go through the mandatory security search which is in fact less debilitating that the average airport travellers’ check. Then I am ushered into the lift and transported vertically to the seat of power for the department that holds my interest.

It is interesting sitting in the pre-lift journey security area observing the to and fro between The House and the Beehive. MPs are engaged on the hot topics of the day as they either walk through or dally with someone they had not anticipated would be loitering on their pathway. Here the earnest play goes back and forth only interrupted by the division bells if there is a debate underway.

Outside the real world spins on by. One of the delights of Wellington are the opportunities for supping well made coffee - it is the very seat of this country’s love of the brown bean. One of the very good cafes there is at Midland Park on Lambton Quay. I recall it was originally named after (ex-city councillor) Keith Spry and it hosted a running water fountain that cascaded down a wide sloping wall – earning itself the nomenclature as the largest urinal in the world. Keith and I served together on the Wellington Harbour Board. He was a man of deep left-wing principle which I admired in him, though did not have to agree with most of his utterances. One of our other

colleagues, ex-Mayor Sir Frank Kitts, used to arrive just in time for the (always) 8pm meetings in the magnificent board room. The late hour of the meeting quickly sent him into a somnolent posture while appearing to still be following the debate. Clearly an art for a long-standing politician.

Towards the end of my 12-year attendance at the green baize covered moon-shaped table the question of visits of allegedly nuclear-powered American warships was debated several times. The elected board always showed courtesy by visiting such ships – anchored at a ‘safe’ distance in the middle of the harbour. These visits were derided by crowds of wharf-side protesters. It is a given that all harbours should be treated as safe havens for shipping and the Americans manned their ships with very politically aware and professional senior officers well trained in the ethos of ‘neither confirm nor deny’ (the presence of nuclear rods in the bowels of the ships).

Much has been spoken over recent weeks of the need to reduce a dependence on carbon – the government announcing only last week that the Glenbrook steel mill will replace coal-fired steel melting with some form of electricity.

But at what cost? The saving of carbon excess in the atmosphere against the loss of jobs in the Huntly area coal mines perhaps? I can well imagine if a nuclear option were to be proposed by our politicians the furore would throw the upcoming election into a tailspin of fury, demonstrations and hatefilled speech. C’est la vie.

Having our expectations exceeded…

In last week’s column I wrote about Roger Bannister breaking the fourminute mile in May 1954. For years, that barrier had been regarded as insurmountable due to the belief that the human body would never endure the required physiological exertion. Sir Roger Bannister believed the barrier was a mental one rather than physical and his achievement paved the way for hundreds of others to emulate his success.

I learned that the shoes Roger Bannister wore 69 years ago in his record-breaking run sold for six figures at a 2015 Christie’s auction. After only two-and-half minutes of bidding, the shoes went under the hammer to an anonymous telephone buyer for £266,500 - well over $500,000. That totally blitzed auctioneers’ expectations of realising £30,000-£50,000.

I fully expected Sir Roger’s shoes would be the most expensive shoes ever sold. So wrong! A quick search revealed, to my surprise, that the sneakers Michael Jordan wore in the 1998 NBA Finals sold at a Sotheby‘s auction for $2.2 million. An astronomical figure to my mind but wait - there’s more. Again,

my expectations proved way too low, imagining that no one could pay more than that, for a pair of shoes.

I found footwear called ‘Moon Star Shoes’, priced at $19.9 millionfollowed closely by ‘Passion Diamond stilettos’ priced at a very reasonable $17 million… plus others going for a modest $15 million.

My search stopped at that point. I had never have imagined people paying prices like that for shoes. Simple presumption plus lack of knowledge on my part… even auction ‘expert’s’ expectations were incredibly surpassed on the likely sale price for Roger Bannister’s shoes.

‘Experts’ also said the sub fourminute mile was impossible. It highlights how little we know - and how much there is to know. The brilliant scientist, Albert Einstein once said, “we know one millionth of a percent about anything…” That was very humble of him, I think. Many lay claim to knowing lots more than that.

For example, the confident assertion of someone professing to be an ‘atheist’, stating there is no God really surprises me! That’s because this position pre-

SLEEPERS OUT THE DOOR

supposes you would possess complete knowledge of everything that there is to be known. For example, you would have to know the complexities of the known universe and how many billions of stars are out there. It’s been estimated that there are about the same number of stars in the observable universe as there are sand grains in all of Earth‘s beaches. Do you know how many starfish get washed up daily on those beaches? How many yaks live in the expanses of the Himalayas? Or how many fleas lived on Napoleon’s cat? Ridiculous you say? I’m just suggesting a little humility might open us up to amazing discoveries.

Like me with shoe prices - when it comes to God, low expectations exist on the basis of what we don’t know about Him. Perhaps He is infinitely greater, all knowing, powerfully and more lovingly concerned with His creation than you’d ever imagined?

A deepening relationship with Him spanning years, unequivocally confirms this for me.

Into referees’ time…

Hautapu won the first challenge for the new Cambridge Referees’ Cup for club colts with a 20-10 win over Leamington on Saturday.

There was no shortage of refs in town as the Cambridge referees’ association celebrated its centenary at a function which attracted about 110 people.

They heard some entertaining stories from former All Black Frank Bunce who also talked about how the game had changed since he was in his prime.

The trophy was donated to mark the centenary and will be contested annually between the two clubs. It replaces a trophy the referees had previously put up as a challenge between Cambridge High and St Peters, who now play in different competitions.

Owls fly high

The St Peters Owls won the Mixed Italian Pursuit annual corporate challenge at the Grassroots Trust Velodrome last Saturday.

The weekend’s racing was the culmination of a seven-week training block almost 200 riders had gone through as velodrome newbies teamed up with experienced riders from each company to race in a series of short distance events.

More than 40 companies and organisations took part in an event where silverware and medals were up for grabs for the fastest teams, but the social side was equally important.

“The camaraderie and bonds formed are not just from the riders taking part but from the staff who come along to support their colleagues,” Craig Rodger, Head of Programmes and Coaching at the velodrome said.

“We probably had between 20 to 30 supporters up in the stands,” said Graham Johns of the Gallagher team, a veteran of four corporate challenges.

“Three of our team of five had never ridden a track bike before, so watching those new guys get on and get it done was just awesome."

Mable, said to be the realisation of a 40-year dream, was unveiled to the public in 2017 as a tribute to the town’s also renowned dairy community.

Tours are booked by arrangement, and more information is available at Morrinsville’s i-Site visitor centre.

Morrinsville - named after Thomas Morrin – to a large degree indeed traces its history back to dairy industry roots.

In the 1920s, two dairy factories - Morrinsville Dairy Company and New Zealand Dairy Company - were built to service the growing dairy industry.

After WWII, many of the original buildings needed expansion or replacement. That growth continued throughout the 1950s and 60s, with state houses and the growth of service industries like Kiwi Fertilizer Works.

With an estimated population of 8500 people as at June 2022, a myriad of attractions now draw thousands more to Morrinsville and its surrounds annually.

One well-known example is Wallace Art Gallery.

Made up of three exhibitions full of New Zealand art regularly displayed on a revolving basis, there’s always something fresh to see.

Factor in a stop at Nottingham Castle Hotel, on the corner of Thames and Studholme streets, too.

Joseph John Wood built it out of timber from the old Cambridge bridge in 1877.

Now, it’s one of the historic buildings on the Heritage Trail.

With those being just a snippet of what Morrinsville has to offer, whatever takes your fancy in town, start planning your visit today.

How to choose your heat pump

Before choosing a size, style or model of heat pump, you need to consider pros, cons and cost-e ectiveness.

And, to get the most out of a heat pump, it's important to choose an e cient model - and then use it properly. Put simply, that means having the right size heat pump for the room you want to heat.

Because, if it's too small, it may cost you more by working too hard to provide enough heat.

If it’s too big, it will emit too much heat, which will go to waste.

When used e ciently, however, heat pumps can provide a level of all-round comfort not easily obtained by plug-in electric heaters.

And, they can quickly bring a room up to temperature and then maintain it.

To help you choose the right heat pump for your heating needs, here are a few considerations to keep in mind.

Will you be mainly using your heat pump for heating or cooling? Is your home old and poorly insulated, or new and well insulated?

If you run the heat pump in “cooling” or

“dry” mode, it’ll remove moisture from the air.

If you’re going to heat one room at a time, or multiple spaces, you need to factor this into your decision making. How often you service your system will depend upon the frequency of usage, the demand on the unit and the conditions the heat pump is exposed to. And, if you are you searching for a reliable, professional service for your home heating needs, look no further than Pratts.

Their expert team specialises in installing, maintaining and repairing leading heat pump brands like Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Toshiba and Carrier.

Energy rating labels: What are they?

When you purchase a heat pump, it will have an energy rating label.

That is, a scale of stars to show how energy e cient a model is, compared to other models of the same size or capacity.

The more stars a heat pump has on its energy rating label, the more e cient it will be.

The energy consumption gure is in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and this gure, coupled with the cost on your latest power bill, can be used to calculate how much your heat pump will cost to run.

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, or MBIE, reports that the national average cost of a kWh in New Zealand is 29 cents.

Obviously, the lower the kWh, the cheaper a heat pump is to run.

While a heat pump’s annual energy consumption in kWh is based on a complex methodology, it essentially

takes into account the heating load, capacity and its e ciency at di erent temperatures.

That said, does this mean it’s more e cient to leave heat pumps on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making use of the “away from home” settings?

Or, should you only turn them on when heat is required?

While the answer for most households is likely that it’s more e cient and, therefore, less costly to turn them on as required – it does depend on how well a house is insulated. Or perhaps, on how much heat is lost almost as soon as it reaches a room.

If you have a near-new house that is airtight and has no draughts, meaning it has no gaps around doors and windows, it could be more e cient to leave the heat pump on all day every day.

The same goes if your house has insulation which far exceeds the building code requirements, if it has double

glazing, and thermal drapes and a true heat exchanger ventilation system – which means you never need to open windows. But, in an old draughty uninsulated Victorian villa, a lot of heat energy will be wasted moving heat into your house.

Then, it’s likely to leak out the walls and windows and gaps to the outside air, where the heat pump outside unit will

take it back out of the air and pump it in again.

Your house could be anywhere between the two, a factor which must be considered as you decide the best way of running a particular heat pump. Though, it’s essential that as much heat-loss is stopped as possible before any heat pump is left to run constantly.

your Backyard: Tirau

Tirau - the corrugated capital of the world

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “...the corrugated capital of the world…”?

That is - in fact - the moniker given to the famously-dubbed picturesque town of Tirau, a short 27 minute trip down SH1 from Cambridge.

With an estimated population of just under 800, the small town is home to some gargantuan animalsincluding its well known ‘Big Sheep’ wool and craft shop

and the ‘Big Dog’ i-Site.

The i-Site building was officially opened in September 1998.

Those with a keen eye will also spot an iron shepherd and praying mantis.

The most recent member of the corrugated iron clan is the big ram, completed in 2016. Tirau though has more than its fair share of must-see, additional, tourist attractions - including the breathtaking Te Waihou Walkway and Blue Spring.

Water at the internationally acclaimed attraction is so pure, it’s said to supply about 70 percent of New Zealand’s bottled water.

Set among some of New Zealand’s most pristine farmland, visitors to Tirau can also expect to see a large variety of boutique shops, specialty gift and homeware stores, cafes and restaurants. One location on anyone’s

bucket list should also be a stay at Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel.

Early Māori spoke of Tirau as a wonderful place to catch Kererū, or native pigeon.

The Oxford Royal Hotel, thought to have been built between 1877 and 1881, was used as a staging post for travellers between Rotorua, Cambridge, Lichfield and, later, Taupō

In 1887, Auckland Agricultural Company - formerly known as McLean & Co - donated two hectares, or five acres, while residents raised 20 poundsabout $40 in 2023 - to build a small one room and porch school for a grand total of 213 pounds, just over $430 today.

The classroom and porch still

remain as part of the school.

In 1938, a dairy factory was built by the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. And, the Tirau butter factory was heralded as the most modern and sophisticated of its time. The first season’s output was 3446 tonnes.

Among the pages of Tirau’s storied history, is the example of the passionate Henry Clothier.

Operating his Oxford Court Antiques, Mr Clothier had a vision for the town - realising

that many people passed through each day due to its location on SH1.

In 1989, he purchased the empty Rose Bros building and turned it into a large, successful antique shop visited by many.

He also later transformed the old council building into a conference and events centre. If you’re visiting with kids, in warmer months, make sure you stop by the swimming pool for a dip, or - as a special treatstop by One Road for an ice cream.

Then, make sure you head to the Tirau Outhouse. Don’t overlook Tirau’s Little Library either - there you’ll pick up a great read.

After opening in 2019, it’s been a very popular spot. So whether you’re passing through, or stopping as a destination visit, make sure you plan a trip to Tirau - the small town with a big heart.

Weekday meals can be easy and economical. And there are some cuisines that fit the bill every time. Asian flavours appeal to most people — think curries, stir-fries and dumplings. These meals are speedy and special. Just keep a selection of economical, multi-purpose spices and herbs in your pantry.

Another fave cuisine with flavour is Mexican. I keep soft tortillas in the freezer so I can whip up a treat even if the traditional ingredients are not on hand. There are always good substitutes: eg, swap canned sliced peaches for tomatoes or plum sauce for salsa.

My family also love Japanese pancakes — okonomiyaki — because they can include just about anything in your fridge. Okonomi translates to ‘as you like it’ and yaki to ‘grilled’. Traditionally these pancakes are prepared from flour, eggs and a flavoured stock, and filled with cabbage — maybe carrot and corn — plus pork or shrimp.

In Japan, this classic street food dish is available at markets and specialty okonomiyaki restaurants where it’s cooked on a large hot plate in the centre of the table. It’s also a popular meal Japanese families will cook at home, usually tweaking the recipe to suit their own tastes and to use ingredients they have on hand.

1 teaspoon five-spice powder

2 tablespoons canola oil

3cm piece root ginger, peeled and julienned or grated

1/2-1 teaspoon each: crushed Sichuan peppercorns, chilli bean paste

2 tablespoons each: soy sauce, rice wine vinegar

1/2 cup water

4 small Shanghai cabbages, trimmed and halved lengthwise

Sprinkle the chicken thighs all over with the five-spice. Heat half the oil in a non-stick pan on medium-high. Add the chicken and cook for 2 minutes each side. Place aside. Add the ginger to the pan and stir for 30 seconds. Add the

peppercorns and chilli bean paste. Return the chicken to the pan. Add the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and the water. Cover loosely and simmer for about 10 minutes. Place the Shanghai cabbage on top, cover and simmer for another 3-4 minutes, until tender.

Serve with rice or noodles. Serves 4.

MYO OKONOMIYAKI

Japanese vegetable pancakes. Great drizzled with Japanese mayo eg Kewpie, and okonomiyaki sauce. To make your own: 2 tablespoons tomato sauce, 1 tablespoon each of Worcestershire and soy sauce and 1 teaspoon sugar, combined. I’ve used bacon in place of cooked pork.

Batter: 2 eggs

1/2 cup cold water

1/4 cup each: plain flour, cornflour

1/2 teaspoon each: baking powder, salt

Filling: 2 rashers rindless bacon, chopped

2 cups very thinly sliced cabbage

1/2 cup each: frozen whole kernel corn, thinly sliced beans, thawed

2 spring onions, diced

2 tablespoons canola oil

To make the batter, whisk the eggs and cold water together in large bowl. Add the flour, cornflour, baking powder and salt. Whisk until smooth. This batter can stand for an hour if necessary.

Panfry the bacon until crisp. Remove from the pan. Combine the vegetables in a bowl. Add to the batter. Stir

until well combined.

Pour 1 tablespoon of the oil into a 20cm frying pan and heat. Place half the bacon in the centre of the pan. Spoon half the batter mixture on top to make a 10cm diameter pancake. Reduce the heat to low and flatten the pancake. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes. When brown underneath flip over to cook the other side, until golden. Remove and keep warm. Repeat with the remaining mixture. For extra zing, add a garnish of pink pickled ginger. Serves 2.

SALMON TACOS

Drained canned salmon is a good sub for the hot-smoked salmon.

4-5 soft taco shells

250g hot smoked salmon, broken into chunks

1/2-3/4 cup plum sauce

1 cup each: grated tasty cheese, thinly sliced cabbage

2 tablespoons plain or chipotle mayo

6-8 thin canned peach slices, well drained

1 small avocado, stoned, peeled and diced

1-2 tablespoons lemon juice

Heat the taco shells briefly in the microwave or according to the packet instructions.

Combine the salmon with the plum sauce. Heat through gently. Fill the warm taco shells with the cheese, then the cabbage mixed with the mayo. Top with the peach slices, salmon and avocado. Drizzle with a little lemon juice. Serves 2.
