RANDOM THOUGHTS & OTHER MINDLESS DRIBBLE

WHAT’S HOT WHAT’S NOT

This year, probably more than any other, folks have been more focused on value and personal interest than ever before. The result is that the world has more opinions and this is definitely true with campuses.

Here are some random observations we got from students, artists and agencies. Obviously we can’t tout these as gospel but maybe they are signs of the times.

The Oscars M

The consensus is that the Oscars over the years have become less and less viable in representing motion pictures that general public likes or enjoys. That is especially so with the youth market. Students don’t seem to believe that the Oscars reflect reality nor do they believe they have the views of the movie-going public. One student described them as “A bunch of stuffy old farts who really wouldn’t know a good movie or a great movie if it slapped them in the face.” Another told us that they thought some of the picks for the 85th Academy Awards were on target but that others were totally obscure and ridiculous choices compared to the films that were hits with fans over the last year.

The Golden Globes L

Of all the awards, the Golden Globes seem to have the most acceptance by the younger generation, especially college students. First held in 1944, currently the Globes honor not only the best in film but television as well and attracts a younger and definitely a more “hip”

audience. Historically it is the 3rd most watched awards show of all those currently making up the industry’s never ending slate of contenders. Revenues have allowed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to donate millions of dollars to entertainment related charities as well as scholarships and other programs for future film and television professionals. The most prominent beneficiary is the Young Artist Awards, presented annually by the Young Artist Foundation. It provides scholarships for young artists who may be physically and/or financially challenged.

Reality Shows M

For a younger generation that cut their teeth on reality shows, surprisingly enough college students are fed-up with them. The main reason we have heard from most is there are too many of them and it has muddied the waters and made them uninteresting. “They are all over the place, on virtually every network and they are over-populated and boring”, Melissa, a student from New Jersey told us. “Not only are there ‘The Housewives from BF Egypt’ or somewhere but who even cares anymore. A lot of them take some washed up artist or artists and give them a place to be seen again. If we wanted to see them, we would already be listening to their music. Do you think putting them on a reality show is going to make us care? No, it isn’t and we lose respect for the network that is pedaling such trash.”

Specifically, here is how we rated reality shows:

Big Brother ** Survivor **** American Idol * Dancing With The Stars ***

4, CAMPUS ACTIVITIES MAGAZINE®, FEBRUARY 2013

The Apprentice * Fear Factor * America’s Next Top Model ** The Amazing Race ** Undercover Boss * Biggest Loser * America’s Got Talent * The Voice **

To add to the list above are shows getting even lower marks like: The Anna Nicole Show, The Osbournes, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, Hogan Knows Best, Celebrity Big Brother, The Simple Life, Tommy Lee Goes to College, The Surreal Life, and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!

Of course, this is only a partial list. Networks gravitate to these shows because they are cheap to produce but they are quickly running out of steam. Our Network Ratings Are As Follows: CBS ***** NBC *** ABC **** FOX **** PBS ****

for a free beer—the only payment the club offered the performers on amateur night (another drink my Mom forbid).

BY STEVEN KENT McFARLIN

The Evolution of Stand-Up Comedy (Part Two) Last month I dedicated my column to how the uniquely American art form of stand-up comedy evolved. This month I will feature a personal evolution: my own. I can’t recall a time when I was not attracted to comedy like a moth to a flame. As a child, deciding which TV program to watch was always just a matter of running the channels to the one that was broadcasting the funniest show. I made the transition from avid spectator to performer at an unusually young age; as a mere toddler my father would teach me jokes and plop me on the conference table of his company to entertain the clients, setting the stage for Dad to close the deal. My reward for warming up the business meeting was a Coca-Cola on the ride home (a drink my Mom forbid).

My next taste of center stage came as a young adult working as a DJ in a dance club, loved the job, but the opportunities for humor were limited. However, the first time I went to a comedy club I had a “Eureka!” moment; I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, although it took over a year before I had the guts (and material) to audition for their Tuesday Open Mic Night. I will forever remember that frightening afternoon fidgeting in the back of the club, nervously waiting for my name to be announced. On knocking knees I made my way to the stage, grabbed the microphone for the first time, and looked out on a showroom so empty it resembled a furniture store. With all the courage I could muster, I performed my first five-minute comedy routine for an audience of one, the club manager. It remains the longest five minutes of my life. I passed the audition and went from working for a free soft drink at my father’s meetings to working

Within a month I was actually earning money in comedy by selling jokes to Joan Rivers. I still have the check for the first joke she bought framed in my office: “What if there had been room at the Inn? Every Christmas would we decorate our yards with plastic hotels scenes -- baby Jesus, the three Wise Men, and the bellboy?”

I was very fortunate to launch my career in an era comedians fondly recall as the “Comedy Boom.” Stand-up comedy was never so popular; clubs were discovering that if they stuck a chalkboard on the sidewalk reading “Stand-Up Comedy Tonight” by nightfall the place would be packed to capacity. Every week somewhere in the country a new comedy club would open up their doors to cash in on this new entertainment craze. The television industry was also beginning to cash in on the nation's hunger for stand-up comedy. Within 11 months of my first amateur night performance I was flown to California to appear on national television, an A&E production entitled

to appear at over 900 Colleges and Comedy Clubs; performing in all 50 states & 23 countries, as well as over fifty TV shows, including Showtime and The Late Show. My evolution in comedy continues. I keep a photo album of all my 8X10s allowing me to track my perpetual invention and reinvention of my comic persona. When I look at recordings of my early performances I am shocked at how much I have changed; my appearance, delivery, and choice of material remain in a constant state of transition. As has the comedy industry itself; when I first started, a handful of talent coordinators at the big TV networks controlled if a comedian would be seen by the masses, now a comic can post a video on YouTube and become an overnight star if it goes viral. This shift in power became evident to me recently when the owner of the very first club I headlined told me he now only books comics that have a million video hits, because that makes it easier for him to sell tickets. This was a wake up call... I need viral videos! I began to rack my brain to create a new format for stand-up comedy, something so unique it would boost video views. While working at a tourist resort I noticed one of those large paintings with a hole you stick your head through and get photographed with a different body (this one was a mermaid)...Eureka! I knew I could be the first to do this onstage, and by using a projector connected to my laptop and a remote, I could change bodies at the push of a button. I could become “The Man of 1,000 Bodies” and write a joke for each!

“Bill Rafferty's Good Time Cafe.” Other offers soon followed (making eight television appearances in just one year!) eventually landing a few parts as an actor, playing an orderly on “ER,” a mental patient on “Profiler,” and a pervert on the “Jenny McCarthy Show.” My high school reunion occurred while filming the movie “High School High,” and I confess I preened in front of former classmates about my role in the Zucker Brother’s film portraying a homeless man who sets up a booth at Career Day.

About this time I had another “Eureka!” moment; I discovered the college market, where one night pays the same amount as one week at a comedy club, and in the decade that followed I was lucky enough to be voted the “Campus Comedian Of The Year” three times. As of this writing, I have had the good fortune

I am thrilled to report the audience response has been beyond overwhelming (I underestimated people’s new addiction to visual stimulation) and I have gone from performing a comedy act with only me to look at, to a comedy event with a world of images to enjoy. A friend of mine describes it as “Photoshop Live,” but rather than try to describe it, I’ll just leave you with this: This year I’ll be bringing it to a college conference near you. Please look for me (my face, not sure what body I’ll be wearing at the time). Steven Kent McFarlin has been described by the press as a “campus entertainment icon.” He offers two great events at one great low price, and has been voted “Campus Comic of the Year” (LaffGuru.com) and the “Campus Performer of the Year” (TalkingAboutMyGeneration.com). Bath Salts

YOUR LIFE DOWN THE DRAIN

A twenty year old man from my hometown stripped naked, jumped out of a second story window and broke both legs. He proceeded to tackle a woman and began gnawing on her head. A man in West Virginia was arrested after he killed his neighbor’s pet goat while wearing women’s underwear. Both had been using bath salts. These extreme behaviors are caused by significantly elevated body temperatures. The brain begins to cook itself and the body reacts by forcing the victim to remove their clothes. The brain stem remains slightly cooler than the rest of the brain and the most primitive bodily functions and instincts remain.

Bath salts are changing. After the five common ingredients were banned, the products didn't disappear, they evolved. As soon as the drugs were declared illegal, drug makers found new ways to get around the law by making slight changes to a chemical or molecule in the compound. It is no longer illegal because it is a different substance, thus creating a continual battle.

Often high doses of common sedatives don't help them. Doctors turn to antipsychotics or other powerful medications to treat people. The concern is that bath salts don’t wear off like cocaine or methamphetamine. Some patients are in the hospital from 5 to 14 days. They’re under heavy se-

The synthetic stimulant or designer drug known as bath salts appeared in the United States in 2009. In 2010, 303 exposures were reported to Poison Control Centers; 5,625 in 2011. These are just the ones that are reported. Bath salts are costing our health care system significant dollars, and they are taking lives.

This white, yellow or brown powder is commonly advertised as “bath additives” to make one feel relaxed, uplifted or serene. It has also been camouflaged as plant food, stain remover, toilet bowl cleaner and hookah cleaner. It is sold in graphic packages or containers as a product intended to do something other than impair a person. They do not contain bath salts but rather three potent synthetic cathinones- MDPV, Mephedrone, and Methylone which mimic cocaine and methamphetamine.

Every box or packet has a label that reads, “Not for human consumption.” This way the manufacturers can skirt all FDA and DEA regulations.

Bath salts can be swallowed, snorted, smoked, or injected. Common effects are teeth grinding, jerking eye movements, profuse sweating, high blood pressure, high

MDPV causes and excessive secretion of dopamine while blocking its reuptake at the same time. The brain becomes flooded with the dopamine and in all the areas where it is important, such as memory, learning, motivation and motor control, there is too much, and it wreaks havoc on these areas. This is why people who abuse the drug feel the effects for several days.

Dickie Sanders was a happy 21 year old who snorted bath salts only once. It led to five days of insomnia, waves of terror and frightening delusions, including one where he saw 25 police cars outside his home and slit his throat with a butcher knife. He was taken to the hospital for stitches and the hallucinations stopped. He told his stepmother that he would never try anything again. The paranoia flared up again at home and Dickie’s father lay in bed with him with his arms wrapped around

Interview & Photos by Ian Kirby Story by Ian Kirby and W.C. Kirby

This February, the Grammy’s will make Bruce Springsteen “Person of the Year.”

Probably no other living single male performer has ever reached the notoriety or the success that Springsteen has enjoyed - decade after decade. His music is raw and makes a point. It makes you proud to be an American through the good and the bad. He and the E-Street Band have had an amazing career that continues to instantly sell-out audiences in mere minutes across this country and around the world and because of this immense popularity, the chance to experience his show comes only a few times each year to select locations.

When we had the chance to see “Bruce In The USA” at last year’s AEP Conference, we were taken with amazement in how close and how professional these entertainers were to the real thing, but

there is good reason. This show was developed and tweaked to play in Vegas and it has done so very successfully. Campus Activities Magazine wanted to offer this show to campuses.

Most of tribute acts exist in a sphere completely separate from the talents they imitate, with the original artists not condoning and sometimes even condemning the tributes. It would be a pretty sharp guarantee of quality then if a tribute act were actually endorsed by members of the act they emulate, wouldn’t it?

“The Greatest Tribute!” Clarence Clemons, E-Street Band

Bruce In The USA is the real deal. This isn’t some hodgepodge of musicians pegged together to try to fit square act into a marketable round hole. This band is made up of world

class musicians that have supported artists like Queen, Paul Rodgers, Meatloaf, Blue Oyster Cult, Hall and Oats, Joe Cocker, The O’Jays, Aretha Franklin, David Cassidy, The Temptations, Slash and more. The group is led by Matt Ryan, who played Bruce Springsteen in Legends In Concert on the Las Vegas Strip for seven years before starting this show.

The act has been together for almost ten years and it has been quite a successful run so far. “We have been doing corporate events all over the world from exotic locales to all the big cities in the U.S.,” Matt says. “The way we see it, this is an insanely successful act, everywhere we take it.” And they have specifically adjusted their rate to be able to deliver this experience to America’s campuses. Essentially the act is a recreation of a Springsteen show that has been www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

successful on and off the strip. “It is a very accurate show; we sound like, look like and behave like the characters we portray.” Watch the video on the home page of our website and you have to be impressed. These guys ROCK! The band comes in and plays the show the audience wants to hear. Not only do they belt out all the big hits but upon request, the band can roll out any of the hundreds of deeper album cuts and B-sides for the hardcore fans. “We deliver inyour-face hits, all the radio songs

and any special requests. We do everything we can to create a rock concert environment wherever we are. This is not a wedding band delivery, it’s a high-end international touring act that fits in performing arts centers, theaters, casinos, fairs or any public venues as well as being easily translated to colleges and universities.” Bruce Springsteen still regularly reigns the kingdom of concert sales all over the world. It’s not necessarily easy to get a ticket, let alone have The Boss show up at your event,

even if you’re in that kind of budgetary ballpark. This act can be an exceptional substitute, so much so that not only the fans of Bruce Springsteen have approved, but even the official E-Street Brand has given their sanction. “Folks expect to see a tribute act or impersonator on the Vegas Strip, but I personally was a little apprehensive at the thought of taking this across the country in public venues where the real hardcore Bruce fans are. It could have been met with some backlash, like something was being taken instead of given. What happened was once we had this show on the Strip, Bruce’s inner circle including Clarence Clemons got wind of it. They brought us to New York City where they rented out the Hard Rock in Times Square on a Saturday Night. It was a very intimidating gig. They took video of the gig, where we backed up Clarence (who ended up a dear friend that we played private events with and was a very supportive part of the show) and played this show, which they sent to an island where Bruce was with his family. He couldn’t be there, but they did a simulcast where they joked with Bruce like ‘Hey, we don’t really need you anymore!” all in good fun.

“When he found out the show existed, he was very supportive, to the point he would play giant stadiums on the West Coast (especially during the “Rising” tour when this was really fresh to him), and tell his huge audiences about us and joke ‘Hey man, I don’t know why anyone would want to be me.’ or look over at Stevie Van Zandt and say ‘Yeah, I heard his band was better than mine.‘ So right from the start he has been a great friend and it has been a huge blessing to have him on our side.”

Host Of The Hit Series on FX, Executive Produced By Chris Rock and Chuck Sklar, Bell Is A Veteran Comic Also Known For His One-Man Show: “The W. Kamau Bell Curve - Ending Racism In About An Hour.” Among the cacophonous voices of late night talk show hosts, one seems to be coming across as much bolder, and certainly much more “biased” than the rest.

“Totally Biased” is a burgeoning new show on FX executive produced by Chris Rock and hosted by W. Kamau Bell, and like many programs on that network, caters to an audience with an edge, seeming much less beholden to censors and status quo than your average late night talk show. The show has an overarching theme based loosely on taking a humorous look at the state of racism and social justice in America, not unlike Kamau’s career itself.

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

A prominent San Francisco based stand-up comic, he gained notoriety through his stand-up lecture style presentation, “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour.” He is a founding member of the stand-up comedy collective “Laughter Against the Machine,” and is also co-host of The Field Negro Guide to Arts & Culture podcast with Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. Praised by Punchline Magazine as “one of our nation’s most adept racial commentators with a blistering wit,” Kamau has been voted San Francisco’s best comedian by the SF Weekly, the SF Bay Guardian, and 7×7 Magazine. His recent stand-up album, Face Full

of Flour, was named one of the Top 10 Best Comedy Albums of 2010 by iTunes and Punchline Magazine.

He is an especially apt performer for the campus market, able to entertain audiences thoroughly as an experienced stand-up, but also engaging their minds as much as any truly academic presentation might. He finds an ultimately receptive and open-minded audience on campuses, and when his schedule is not taken up working on “Totally Biased” he enjoys spending time with students. When that is exactly depends on just when you catch him; one thing he can never complain about is a lack of volume or variety in his daily activities. “It really depends on what day you catch me,” he says laughing, something Kamau clearly does a lot. “Right now, I am at the end of season one of my talk show ‘Totally Biased’ on FX.”

(Brief editor’s note here: the interview with Kamau was done in November 2012. The show is now airing its second season, which premiered January 17.) “That takes up most of my time, but whenever I have breaks and colleges are interested, I will come do shows on campus toward the weekends. It is a lot, not to mention I have a 17 month old daughter, so my schedule is quite packed right now. There is a lot going on, but you have to take advantage of the opportunities as you get them – they don’t come along forever.”

18 CAMPUS ACTIVITIES MAGAZINE®, FEBRUARY 2013,

www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

Kamau’s show on FX was born of the rave reactions to his one man show, “I got the show on FX because of the one-man standup show ‘The W. Kamau Bell Curve.’ That show has video and audio clips, slides and is a very topical presentation about racism in America, from a very universal perspective. It isn’t just about black or white, it comes from whatever racial group might be in the news at the time. It’s something that shifts and adjusts and changes as time goes by, but it’s not something that comes from the singular racial perspective of me as a black man. It is something far more adaptive than that.”

The show captured the notice of some very influential people very quickly. “That is the show that Chris Rock saw that he said ‘There’s a TV show in here somewhere.’ Now he is producing the show on FX.” The most important thing to keep in mind is that despite the fact this is the “speakers” issue and that this show might even be held in a “lecture” hall, those are two words that are much too dry to properly describe the experience your students can have with this event. “(Laughs) I think that because the show I do is about diversity and there are some facts in there that people walk away with, I have sort of been put in a nice double genre where I can go in as a lecture or a stand-up, because the show is funny but www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

there are things you can learn too, if you so choose. There are some pretty poignant discussion starters in there, from the perspective of general campus culture.” There is little doubt that Kamau does an excellent job of touching on topics that will resonate for days and weeks after he leaves campus. “Many times I’ll work with campuses who are either struggling with diversity, or who have diversity but want to help celebrate it.” Kamau says one thing to be sure of is that potential campus bookers don’t get bogged down into trying to figure out exactly what he is, but to focus on the draw he can be. “I am just a stand-up comic. I get placed into all of these separate categories and I am kind of like “What am I this time? OK, I’m still just going to do what I do.’ (laughs).”

“The W. Kamau Bell Curve” is a show clearly well researched and structured and while it did take many elements of Kamau’s life in conjunction, the concept itself he says was more like a moment of epiphany. “It sort of occurred to me in a flash. I was doing stand-up and I was struggling with how to talk about more topical material. Many times in stand-up, if you say ‘this thing happened’ and you proceed to talk about it in a funny way, if the audience has not heard of whatever thing or event you are referencing, they tend to think it is just something you are

making up to use as a set up for a punchline. I found myself wanting a little bit more credibility. It wasn’t so much so I would be ‘taken seriously.’ I still wanted to make people laugh, but I think there is a deeper more resonant sort of laughter generated when people realize I’m not just making up bullshit. So I needed a computer or screen or something to show the articles or video clips I am referencing. It creates a sort of perfect storm. I am able to still make people laugh, and in a more impactful way, AND on top of that they might actually learn something about the world and society they are living in. For the average club or theater audience this is a fun time, but for campuses, it’s truly on the mark. It allows for all the things most campus activities boards hope to be able to do for their students through booking talent and it has found a great reception. On top of that I truly enjoy doing it, so with the hopeful success of season 2 of “Totally Biased” I hope that I will be able to work more and more with college audiences.”

because guys see screaming fits of insane passion in porn they have to do it as well. Cindy puts an important highlight on not blaming young men solely for all sexual health concerns on a campus, but does maintain a focus on them. She illustrates why by posing an interesting question to her audiences. First, she asks the men to list some of the precautions they take to remain physically safe on campus. None of them can name any. She then asks them the same question about steps women take and they make a long list, from going to parties in a group to walking in well lit areas. “I think getting to the heart of the matter is communicating with the males and getting to the issues like sexual assault and consent. My talks can span topics that interest both men and women, but typically tend to be shied away from when it comes to openly communicating among groups. These topics can range from sexual health to female pleasure to the hook up culture, genital image issues, cosmetic genital surgery to anything else that people really want to know about but don’t get to discuss.”

Cindy learned a lot from six older siblings and in turn passed it on to almost two dozen nieces and nephews and, somewhere along the way, became known as the go-to person for broaching uncomfortable topics. “Some www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

friends kind of bossed me (laughs) into trying to do a show. It was at the very busiest time of my life, when I had little kids and I was hesitant because I didn’t think people would really be interested in it. I tried out a show on these topics and it really resonated; then I tried it out with my niece’s sorority and then my nephew’s fraternity and some momentum started picking up. I found that not only is it a universal talk, but there is a desperate need for it. It’s open, humorous information without scolding that through comedy and storytelling has become a shared experience between my audiences and me. The only person who gets thrown under the bus is me,” she jokes.

If you ask the average person about their “human resources” or “sex ed” class, you’ll pretty much get an instantaneous nuclear eye roll. Whether you learned the “birds and bees” from parents prior to that or not, it usually ended up being a weekly hour of red faces and snickering far more than honest discussions about sexual development, health or (re)productive questions. Cindy has crafted an approach to circumvent that teenage unease. “It’s like when I am talking about female pleasure. No one is talking about this; no one is comfortable talking about orgasms, yet we have all these women on campus who think

Don’t think Cindy is going to come in and start handing out “The Puritan’s Handbook,” or guilt anyone into feeling awkward no matter what their preferences might be. “My feeling is, you can do all of that and more if it really turns you on, but you better first find what makes your and your partner’s body work. So many young (and even middle-aged) women don’t know what makes their own bodies tick before all of a sudden you’re hearing about people getting into threesomes and foursome...well have you ever thought about figuring out a onesome and a twosome?” she asks laughing. “How about starting with the basics before moving on to things that may or may not be what all parties involved are interested in pursuing? Female pleasure is just one example of ground I cover, and a perfect example of something men want to know about but almost never do. Everyone says men don’t care about that and it’s simply not true. So many men from young to old care about female pleasure and think by the age of 18 or so they can no longer ask about it. Unfortunately the number one reference source they then go to is porn, which could not be more misleading.” The second major reference point for these guys who feel so awkward about speaking openly about sex in most circumstances might seem to be a more reliable one but is in fact just as nefarious an information source as porn. “These are the guys who are ‘players’ or have sex a lot and typically end up being the least reliable, I have discovered. I have interviewed many these guys who are ‘the’ source in a fraternity or on an athletic team and when I talk to them, they tend to not know very much at all. They have had tons of sex and I think young women feel like it is a great opportunity to have sex with the big stud, but no one is giving these guys any feedback so they doesn’t actually know that much.” This is not a show just for women, or men for that matter. It’s a flexible, open and frank discussion that can be catered to the needs of your group. Give Kirkland Productions a call at 866-769-9037 or booking@kirklandproductions.com to find out how Cindy Pierce can help your students begin a healthy, open dialogue.

AUSTIN RENFROE: Austin Renfroe is known for his vocal ability along with his ability to get people out to his shows. Campus Trends L

You are probably going to see more music starting next year on most campuses. It has taken a back seat to comedy and variety acts for the last decade, but more and more buyers are looking for music that can appeal to a wide variety of tastes and it looks like there will be more diverse musical choices for the upcoming season.

Music took a huge hit decades ago when the drinking age rose from 18 to 21 and most campuses admit that in its heyday, alcohol sales on campus boosted musical attendance. It has taken nearly twenty years for campus programmers to invest in big concerts again and more and more are moving in that direction. Now that you have acts like Fun. and Neon Trees as well as Taylor Swift and a whole host of modern day country cowboys playing campus dates, a lot of schools are looking at music as an investment that will allow them to produce a show at a profit and put cash back into their activities budgets.

36, CAMPUS ACTIVITIES MAGAZINE®, FEBRUARY 2013

You also have the coming of age of artists like Natalie Stovall who was CAM’s Entertainer of the Year last year. She proved that music was still viable in the campus marketplace and the market had the ability to develop its own acts. I think you are going to be seeing more and more of this in the years to come. But it does take an agency with an eye on the statistics and enough leverage and determination to develop a star. What we did learn from Barry Drake over the years is that musically the market has splintered and it takes the right entertainer (and notice I didn’t say “musician”) to be a break-out success.

I think history has proven anything can happen and without a doubt music is alive and well. It is crucial that you know your audience and how to market the act to create a win/win/win situation for you, the act and the agency. PS: Don’t forget to vote in this year’s awards. INTERVIEW & STORY BY IAN KIRBY The fiasco of our 2012 Presidential Election threw a lot of figures into the ‘household name’ category, especially throughout the Republican primary season of late 2011 through mid 2012. Some were infamous, slinking back into the spotlight, some were inspiring new faces until they began speaking and some were downright laughable oddities that seemed a fluke to be on the national stage in contention for the possible assumption of the singly most influential position in the world. So many young people have become disillusioned with the quagmire that has become the two party system that dominates our political landscape. Because young voters, especially the college age demographic of 18-24, step into such a barrage of polarity, back-handed propaganda and outright misinformation the minute they hit voting age, it’s hard not to become apathetic, especially to those would be voters who don’t side strongly with either camp.

There are many who can relate to the conservative side on economic issues; certainly most young people understand at least to a basic degree the shadow of a $16 trillion debt and a shaky economy, and none are more heavily affected by the lagging jobs market. All too often we hear of graduates who have to become humbled by the prospect of moving back home, unable to find employment. While the two sides can debate over cause and effect, the fact remains that many young people see the wisdom in decreased spending.

The catch therein lies with the social side of the issue. Many young voters just can’t come to terms with the far right’s positions on things like the right to choose, equal rights, gun control, cannabis, social welfare and others, so they lean left despite mounting fiscal concerns. These stark contrasts between the two parties, and most candidates’ seeming willingness to jump on board the issue that best suits to charge their base has left the masses not trusting anything, and not necessarily wanting to side with one extreme or the other.

Wouldn’t it be nice then, if during the Presidential Election of 2012, there had been another choice? A more reasonable option, someone that could cover an enormous amount of middle ground between the polarized opposites?

During the melee of the Republican Primary season, one person, Dr. Ron Paul, who steadfastly went against the flow by not being just another daisy shifting in the wind, gained the notice and www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

admiration of millions of people through his consistent, well argued Libertarian ideals, despite the general media’s best attempts to ignore him.

There’s an old joke about politicians and lawyers referring to how you can tell when they’re lying: their lips are moving. It is beyond impressive then to know first about Ron Paul that he has held the exact positions on every major political talking point since he became a Republican candidate for the United States Congress in 1974. While he lost to the incumbent and wasn’t elected until 1976, Dr. Paul went on to serve for almost 25 years in three different terms until he stepped down in January of this year, not once ever voting for a single measure that did not hold within it the ideals and principles set forth by our Constitution. That document forms all of the strict guidelines Dr. Paul holds to in his political policy, which he now has made a priority to communicate to students at campuses across the nation. He has already proven his drawing power at institutions with bases both liberal and conservative, and he sits down with Campus Act Mag in an exclusive interview to discuss why he thinks our audience is such an important one for the political future.

I start by asking him just that, and his answer reveals far more his utilitarian and practical ideals than the pandering answer one might expect from a politician. “I think the best answer to that is this is the place where I have had my best reception. I have talked about issues relevant to students and been involved in education for a long time and secondarily in politics. The issues that I speak about and the philosophy I espouse has actually attracted young people more than anyone else, particularly on college campuses. I guess it’s human nature for me to go to the places where I have a good reception. I have always enjoyed going to the campuses.”

Dr. Paul’s positions are considered more than just different from the norm, some of them, like banning the Federal Reserve, IRS, returning to a gold standard, withdrawing from the United Nations and discontinuing our military operations throughout the world are looked upon as being almost ludicrous. What Dr. Paul finds ludicrous is that it’s only now, after so many years beating the same drum, that his sort of perspective is coming to the level of recognition it has, and most still don’t realize that it’s nothing new or revolutionary, not in the last 250 years or so anyway. “My perspective is a little bit different, but I find that a little bit sad, because I haven’t invented or created anything. I don’t have a new philosophy to present, I am very much into the tradition of our country and Constitution, of the principles of personal liberty that were laid out by the Framers.”

the trends of change have shifted, it should be him. “The reason, I think, why something is happening in these last few years, is technology. There were times when I would go to college campuses back in the 80’s with the same message and same amount of enthusiasm and if I could get a class of 25 people together and talk to them I always did it thinking ‘Well, I only have to get one person interested and momentum will build. But something happened, there has been a lot going on in the Freedom Movement and the idea of personal liberty and limited government. It has sort of been under the radar, but since the 1950’s there have been certain groups that have been holding the fort so to speak, and keeping these ideas alive. Recently though, a couple of things have happened and it seems like a chord has really been struck with the young people. Firstly, the availability of the Internet and the use of it by young people. All of a sudden our ability to spread this message has become much easier.”

While technology became a vehicle, Dr. Paul still thinks there was a necessary catalyst that fired it to life. “Even having the Internet alone wasn’t enough, I think there had to be confirmation that there was something very much wrong with our system. For a long time, Republicans and Democrats actually got along pretty well with each other, because wealth was endless. There was no need for restraint in spending, deficits didn’t seem to matter. But now with the crisis we have hit, I think young people are seeing what they are inheriting and this message is spreading. I think we live in very different times, which is why you often hear talk of an intellectual revolution going on.” One aspect of listening to Ron Paul speak that seems to make people naturally rally behind him is his ability to speak about the issues and lay out the facts, and then let people naturally gravitate toward his side. He doesn’t tout himself, his abilities or his electability, he speaks pas-

Dr. Paul also believes our rights extend beyond that of simple legality. “I think we are all born with the natural instincts to be ourselves. In small children and teenagers we can certainly see an effort to be independent minded and it tends to be sort of beaten out of us after a while. I think young people though still often have that spark; they possess an element of idealism that I have an appeal for.” If anyone should have a sound opinion on why

sionately about the constitutional ideals he holds dear and lets the chips fall. The residual affect is that you want to follow him because he’s not asking you to, he’s asking you to use your head and follow your heart, knowing that the concept of personal freedoms is an untenable one for our American society, and one that resonates deeply with our people.

Dr. Paul’s message to campuses is manyfold, and can be suited to address topics that are of interest to your base. One of the topics he specializes in that has grown legs of late is examining just what the role of government should be in our lives. “Frequently I bring this up, in almost all of my talks in fact. The question one has to ask is: ‘What should the role of government be?’ It’s a very important question which every American should be able to give a ready answer to. I believe the Founders and the colonists at that time asked the same question, had a Revolution and wrote the Constitution as a result. They did not like the role of government to be that of the traditional dictatorship of the kings. Their answer was that it needed to be there, but should be minimal. It should provide the protection of liberty, but not create a welfare state and not to police the world. They were very adamant on their advice to this point, not to get involved in overseas adventurism. “Of course it didn’t make it into the Constitution, but they even argued that we should not be allowed to have deficits and should not be emitting bills of credit, which means paper money. Only gold and silver should be legal tender. In Article 1, section 8, they laid out the things we are allowed to do and if it’s not in there, we are not allowed to do it on a federal basis. Everything else should be reserved to the states and the individual. That has been forgotten and I think we need to keep asking that question. If we decide we want our government to be the

policemen of the world and have ever-expanding welfare (which has been our direction so far), the crisis will get worse and we will be forced, sometime in the not so distant future, to make a decision, as a country. We, and especially our younger generation, cannot depend on perpetual wealth brought out of borrowing, spending and printing money. It just can’t last.”

So what do we do about it? “Well, you have to admit the problem. We can’t solve it if we don’t acknowledge where we are. Those in Washington now argue that it’s a budgetary problem and maybe if we just tinker with it here, give some reassurances there, change the tax code a bit and borrow a little bit more that we can finally get the economy going, pay our bills and everything is going to be okay. We have to admit that is not possible. We have gotten past the point that even if we had a dramatic change in the members of Congress, they would have to start from scratch again and ask that all important question again. What we have accepted as the role of government is not doable. We cannot continue to be in 135 countries and have 1000 bases overseas. That has to come to an end. Things are going to get a lot worse, with terrible inflation and a much weaker economy if we don’t right the course.” But, he says, all is not lost. “I am encouraged though because a lot of young people are listening and they are studying the principles of the free market and limited government. We have been taught so long to feel like you are an oddball if you believe in these things and I think what I try to do is make people feel better about this position. Just because you don’t want to fight all of these wars doesn’t mean you are against the troops. I am against the military industrial complex in general, yet I have the unwavering support of far more of our troops than any other political candidate. We have to convince people it is in the interest of our country to change course.”

An overwhelming percentage of dollars donated to the 2012 election campaigns from military service members was to Dr. Paul. “I know that I consistently raised more money from our troops than all of the other Republican candidates put together. I saw one report that said at times I outraised even what President Obama raised from the military. There is no doubt about it, but no one talked about it. You didn’t hear about it on the media, I wasn’t on the national news with them asking me ‘Ron Paul, why do you get so much support from the troops? We thought you didn’t like them!’ Of course, I also served in the military for five years and none of the other candidates did except for Rick Perry, which probably didn’t hurt me.

“This is a very big issue and I think if nothing else it makes conservatives and libertarians feel more comfortable and not feel like they are a bad person because they don’t want to start another war. The Founders were adamant about us staying out of the internal affairs of other nations and I think we have gotten a lot of people to think about it, young people especially. Do they want to go into a military where they will have to go fight wars that don’t make any sense? The media makes me or people like me seem like radicals, but what’s radical about not wanting to have a $16 trillion dollar debt, or a $220 trillion dollar obligation that is not payable? What’s radical about saying that our government shouldn’t invade our houses without search warrants, something we fought a revolution about? People keep coming after it, saying how horrible and rigid and idealistic I am, but everyone has ideas, there are just bad ones and good ones,” he says laughing. “When people say ‘you are overly rigid in your idealism’ what they are really saying is that they don’t want your idealism at all, they want their own.” There appeared to be a concerted effort from all the major media outlets during the 2012 campaign

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, MADISON

to overlook and exclude Ron Paul from the spotlight as much as possible. Despite placing a close second in Iowa’s Ames Straw Poll, third in the Iowa Republican Caucus and second in the New Hampshire Primary, he seemed to be continually pushed off to the side. He perhaps would have fared better across the board except for a lack of funds to compete with the prolific monetary forces of the other candidates as well as the GOP itself, which did not fairly treat Dr. Paul as a potential candidate. “I am encouraged now, because truth is coming out via the Internet, and we don’t have to be as influenced by major media. There was one particular debate in the Republican Primary, where they gave me 89 seconds to speak out at a 2 hour event. This was immensely disproportionate to the audience of my constituency in the process. In 2008 we had the single largest Republican rally of the primary season with over 5,000 people in Independence Mall in Philadelphia, which was pretty dramatic and even then, there was zero coverage. I think they know that this message contradicts what they are doing and hurts their position. We have pretty good evidence that the GOP purposely tried to exclude me as a candidate.” In June, a group of 132 supporters of Dr. Paul, demanding the freedom as delegates to the upcoming Republican party national convention to cast votes for Paul, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Republican National Committee and 55 state and territorial Republican party organizations for allegedly coercing delegates to choose Mitt Romney as the party’s presidential nominee. The suit alleged that there had been “a systematic campaign of election fraud at state conventions,” employing rigging of voting machines, ballot stuffing, and falsification of ballot totals. The suit further pointed to incidents at state conventions, including acts of violence and changes in procedural rules, allegedly intended to deny participation of Paul supporters in the party decision-making and to prevent votes from being cast for Paul. An attorney representing the complainants said that Paul campaign advisor Doug Wead had voiced support for the legal action. Dr. Paul himself told CNN that although the lawsuit was not a part of his campaign’s strategy and that he had not been advising his supporters to sue, he was not going to tell his supporters not to sue, if they had a legitimate argument. “If they’re not following the rules, you have a right to stand up for the rules. I think for the most part these winning caucuses that we've been involved in we have followed the rules. And the other side has at times not followed the rules.” BOOK IT! Let your students make their own decision and hear the unadulterated truth from someone who will tell it like it is and has not changed his message in over 30 years. Your students may support him, or they may not, but undeniably they will walk away from his talk with more knowledge about our history and political system, and a more open mind, and perhaps the motivation to change the world.
