No Limits Photography SPORT PHOTOGRAPHY WITH JULIE KERBEL

I am the son that my father never had and I absolutely LOVE all sports, so it was inevitable that I would venture into sports photography. I feel so privileged to be working in a job that I love so much. My journey as a sports photographer has taken me on so many amazing adventures, the most recent one being a trip to Israel as the official Australian photographer at the Maccabiah Games, which is the third largest sporting event in the world. It was an experience of a lifetime. I have photographed the Ashes, Super Rugby series, Big Bash cricket, marathons, soccer, tennis, basketball and more and I love nothing more than capturing athletes pushing themselves to the limits – displaying physical strength, drive and determination. Being able to freeze all of that in motion as well as the emotions that go with it is incredible. In July, I am heading to Mexico City for the Pan American Maccabiah games and I cannot wait for my next adventure.

Australia’s south-west corner has some of the most photogenic landscapes in the country, from the Stirling Ranges and Albany across to Augusta and up to Busselton. It’s a vast area, so split the trip up, beginning with the Stirling Ranges, then Albany, Denmark and Busselton to name a few favourites. One of my favourites would be Busselton Jetty. All of the many images I have seen of this are shot from the beach and show the jetty curving out to sea. The morning I shot this, I was up early and got some images from the jetty with the camera on the tripod to eliminate shake. With landscapes I always set my f stop to f16 or greater and try to get long exposures of 2sec or greater, which I find allows the colours to blend in and makes the water look soft and milky. This image is a perfect example of leading lines formed by the jetty railing and the train tracks, with the buildings filling the foreground. The sky’s lovely soft hues are the icing on the cake.

Digital cameras have made photography really accessible to many travellers – from the obligatory selfie at a landmark location to more “serious” photography that explores and exposes the spirit of the people, culture or setting that we’re discovering. I’m one of the lucky folk who make travel and photography my business. I want to share the joy of discovering new photographic experiences with others, which led to me running photography tours in places as diverse as India, New Zealand, Madagascar, Kenya, Italy and more. My travel photography takes on a documentary style, so I know I need to be able to shoot quickly and intuitively. I almost exclusively use the Fujifilm X cameras for my travel photography – they’re lightweight, with an easy-to-use interface, and with image quality that allows me to produce fine art prints from the images when I get back. My approach to travel photography can be summed up in three words: subject, light, and timing. You need a strong subject to draw the viewer’s eye, you need good light to create mood and atmosphere, and you need to be great with timing to make sure that you nail that storytelling moment in your travel shot. Making images is my first passion and food (eating it) is my second – haha. So the opportunity to make images of delicious food for a living is an absolute pleasure. Whilst I photograph within many genres, food photography is one of my faves. The types, colour, style and creativeness of delivering culinary art is endless, and it is this that makes photographing food exciting to me. With a sound understanding of the basic principles of photography I feel anyone can photograph food (still life). Light and composition are two important factors to creating beautiful food images. Whether working with natural light, artificial light or a combination of both, creative lighting adds the sparkle and vibrance to culinary art. Creative composition is what helps draw the viewers eye to the heart of your image.

Because the presentation of food is so varied, there are many different angles from which food is best captured. Finding the right angle is the challenge and the creative responsibility of the photographer - working hard to find it is very rewarding. Technically, whilst any interchangeable lens camera (ILC) body will suffice it is the choice of lens that the food photog should think most about. Obviously, the food is the hero of your image but the background is equally important and lens choice plays a critical part in the desired outcome. Depth of field and the use of wider apertures help control what is most visible to the eye of the viewer. Focal length determines compression or open-ness in relation to the subject and the background. Choose wisely. @stefangosatti

Seeing the Beauty in the Unexpected. For me, one of the joys of photography is seeing and creating photographs of the often ignored beauty all around us. One of the genres that exemplifies this is macro photography or extreme close up photography. This is where you photograph subject matter like plants, animals, insects or other still life that when printed is much bigger than life size. Typically this is done with a lens/camera that can shoot 0.5 – 1.0 times magnification or greater. The joy for me is being able to show the beauty of things you don’t normally notice or see. This photograph was taken of a tiny pot plant in Monterey, USA that was next to a door step.

A few tips for getting into macro photography are:

• Get a good macro lens or a camera with a macro mode built in. For macro lenses I’d recommend a lens 90mm or greater so you are not too close to the subject, particularly if photographing insects or animals. • Make sure you have plenty of light, and if necessary extra strobe lighting. • Pay attention to the background and depth of field (how much is in focus). • Make sure you frame and compose your entire photograph. • Be patient and experiment with your subject.
