Advent Chapel 2020

Filmed in the Benitez Chapel Presented Virtually December 8

A Festival of Lessons and Carols Advent is a season of quiet expectation, looking, listening, and longing. The service of Lessons and Carols is an unfolding of the story of the coming of Christ, through Word and music, to deepen our understanding of the depth of God’s love for us. In the beginning, the chapel is in darkness. As the service moves the procession forward, it moves us all from darkness into light, until with joy, we celebrate the good news of the birth of God’s holy child. Vesper Responsory for Advent

The Bidding Prayer

The Rev. Beth Holden, Dean of Spiritual Life

Dear People of God: In the season of Advent, it is our responsibility and joy to prepare ourselves to hear once more the message of the Angels, to go to Bethlehem and see the Son of God lying in a manger. Let us hear and heed in Holy Scripture the story of God’s loving purpose from the time of our rebellion against him until the glorious redemption brought to us by his holy Child Jesus, and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world, for peace and justice on earth, for the unity and mission of the Church for which he died, and especially for his Church in our country and in this city. And because he particularly loves them, let us remember in his name the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed, the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and unloved, the aged and little children, as well as all those who do not know and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Finally, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and that whole multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in Jesus, we are one for evermore. And now, to gather all these petitions, let us pray in the words which Christ himself has taught us, saying: Presider and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Presider The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and to the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen. Lesson I

Genesis 3:8-15 Adam and Eve rebel against God and are cast out of the Garden of Eden. Carol: Magnificat

8th Tone, arr. Garmon Ashby Harmonization - Ken Ballard Cantor - Kate Teagarden ’22

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.

For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.

And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.

He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.

For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our freedom, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Lesson IV Micah 5:2-4 The one who is to rule Israel will be born in the village of Bethlehem. Carol: Wexford Carol

Garmon Ashby, Choir Director

Trad. Arr. Alice Parker Kate Teagarden ’22 - Soprano Leah Teagarden ’22 - Soprano

Good people all, this Christmas time, Consider well and bear in mind What our good God for us has done In sending his beloved son With Mary holy we should pray, To God with love this Christmas Day In Bethlehem upon that morn, There was a blessed Messiah born. Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep To whom God’s angel did appear Which put the shepherds in great fear Arise and go, the angels said To Bethlehem, be not afraid For there you’ll find, this happy morn A princely babe, sweet Jesus, born.

With thankful heart and joyful mind, The shepherds went the Babe to find. And as God’s angel had foretold, They did our Savior Christ behold. As Mary then we now should pray To God with love this Christmas day; In Bethlehem upon that morn, There was a blest Messiah born.

Lesson V John 1:1-14 The Word was made flesh and we have seen his glory.

Ned Smith, Head of School

Carol: All bells in Paradise

Words and Music - John Rutter

Deep in the cold of winter, Darkness and silence were everywhere; Softly and clearly, there came through the stillness A wonderful sound to hear: All bells in paradise I heard them ring, Sounding in majesty the news that they bring; All bells in paradise I heard them ring, Welcoming our Saviour, born on earth a heavenly King. All bells in paradise I heard them ring: ‘Glory to God on high’ the angel voices sing. –5–

Lost in awe and wonder, Doubting I asked what this sign might be: Christ our Messiah revealed in a stable, A marvellous sight to see. All bells in paradise… He comes down in peace, a child in humility, The keys to his kingdom belong to the poor; Before him shall kneel the kings with their treasures, Gold incense and myrrh. All bells in paradise…

Closing Collect and Blessing

The Rev. Art Callaham, Chaplain

O God of power and might, shatter the places of darkness in our lives with the light of your promised coming. Open our minds to understand the words of the sacred story read and sung to us this night. Be our light in the darkness, as the days grow shorter, darker, and colder. Overwhelm us with your goodness, strengthen our faith, and forgive our sin. By your holiness make us holy, ready to receive the promise of your salvation. And by your mercy, make us merciful, ready to share your light with the world. Amen. May Almighty God, who sent his Son to take our nature upon him, bless you in this holy season, scatter the darkness from before your path, and brighten your heart with the light of his holiness. May God, who sent his angels to proclaim the glad news of the Savior’s birth, fill you with joy, and make you heralds of the Gospel. May God, who in the Word made flesh joined heaven to earth and earth to heaven give you his peace and favor. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you for ever. Amen. Hymn in Procession: 100, v. 1 Joy to the World
