As a tribute to those who have served before us, we have assembled vintage photos from our archives showcasing SOC members and friends through the years. As always, we endeavor to celebrate our Society and inspire future members.

About the SOC The Society of Camera Operators began in 1979 as the Society of Operating Cameramen (SOC)—an organization dedicated to the advancement of the art and creative contributions of the Camera Operator in the motion picture and television industries.

Incorporated as a nonprofit charitable organization in 1981, the SOC dedicates its full support to The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Annually, the SOC meets this challenge with proceeds from the Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Thirteen Camera Operators banded together with the goal of advancing the position of the working Camera Operator in the motion picture and television industries. They drew up a Constitution & By-laws and the Society of Operating Cameramen was born.

To further honor the talented men and women behind the camera, the first SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards took place in 1981. Since its start, over 100 golden Cammy statuettes have been awarded, along with over 30 Technical Achievement awards.

Having since changed its name to The Society of Camera Operators, the SOC continues to bring industry leaders and cinematic artists into close confederation. Society members are kept at the forefront of the industry’s ever-advancing technology through continuing workshops and corporate sponsored equipment showcases.

Our Mission

Our Camera Operator quarterly magazine is noted for its significant contribution to the industry. Informative articles and interviews range from historical pieces to in-depth coverage of the most current technology. Vision is the most important sense that Camera Operators use in our daily work. The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) advances the art, craft, and creative contributions of the Camera Operator. The SOC is an internationally recognized professional honorary Society. The core activities of the Society are the annual SOC Awards, publishing the Society’s magazine Camera Operator, and our charitable commitment to The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. We serve the SOC membership through our commitment to advancing the role of the Camera Operator by providing education, supporting the development of technology and production methods, and honoring the members who have served before us.

The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles About The Vision Center

Thomas C. Lee, MD

The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is an international referral center for children with complex eye diseases. It is one of the few centers in the country to offer expertise in virtually every pediatric ophthalmologic subspecialty. Board-certified pediatric ophthalmologists care for more than 15,000 patients and perform more than 1,500 ophthalmic surgeries each year, making The Vision Center one of the largest, most respected centers of its kind, treating nearly 20 percent of all retinoblastoma cases diagnosed annually in the United States. Among other innovations, physicians at The Vision Center use spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) to diagnose retinal detachment in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding eye disorder affecting premature infants, and were the first to combine SDOCT with the novel ocular endoscope to treat ROP. This device grants surgeons the ability to correct this potentially blinding disorder in premature infants.

About Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a nonprofit pediatric health care organization dedicated to creating hope and building healthier futures for children. Selected as the premier children’s hospital in California and among the top five in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, we treat 107,000 young patients annually from Los Angeles and around the world. As a pediatric charity of choice, the hospital relies on the generosity of the community to support its groundbreaking pediatric research and the complex care it provides for critically ill and injured children.

Since his arrival at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Dr. Lee has developed the Retina Institute into a world class center and in 2011, was promoted to Director of the Vision Center, which has eight full time faculty devoted to all aspects of childhood blindness. Dr. Lee has made several advances in our understanding of pediatric retinal disease and has recruited a team of physicians and basic scientists to develop new treatments for conditions such as retinoblastoma and retinopathy of prematurity. In addition to developing a robust research program, he’s helped create an innovative education platform to teach doctors in developing countries remotely over the Internet. In 2010, he established a program in conjunction with the Armenian Eye Care Project, which deployed digital retinal cameras to the capital city of Yerevan that allowed the US based experts to supervise Armenian doctors during their weekly rounding on babies with a blinding disease called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). More recently, he’s helped establish a neonatal nursing educational program to assist the nurses who care for these children. It’s his long-term goal to create an open online education platform that can be used to teach doctors and healthcare workers in developing countries, and provide them with a level of expertise comparable to that of the United States.

President’s Award Dan Perry, Director NAO Production Manager/Director DMPC of Sony Electronics Dan Perry is Director of Sony’s Digital Motion Picture Center (DMPC), located on Stage 7 at Sony Pictures Entertainment. During his 18-year career at Sony, Perry has been instrumental in creating widespread acceptance for landmark technologies in the motion picture and television industries, including F-Series Cameras, Sony’s XDCAM system and the HDCAM SR format for episodic television and motion pictures. He has worked over the years to ensure that the requests of the production community are better understood by Sony engineers, to deliver products more suited for their needs. His relationships with key organizations, such as the SOC, have allowed him to provide valuable feedback necessary to refine and develop new products. The DMPC provides a unique creative environment for shooting and evaluating images of the highest-quality, and provides detailed hands on training to thousands of industry professionals on camera operation and post 4K workflows. Perry works closely with industry specialists to define the DMPC’s long-term vision for this one-of-a-kind facility, using his extensive Courtesy of Dan Perry

experience in bringing new technologies to Hollywood’s brightest creative minds. Perry has held a variety of sales and marketing roles, including his recent position as production manager for Sony’s National Accounts Organization. He began his career in operations and progressed through multiple roles including: western regional sales manager for direct and reseller channel sales, managing studio and production accounts to drive sales of Sony products; and senior account manager, handling major production, post production and broadcast accounts in the greater Los Angeles area.

Camera Operator Lifetime Achievement Award Daniel Gold, SOC from one studio camera department to the next, learning to load film magazines, keep darkroom paperwork, and I became familiar with the cameras and equipment that passed through the loading rooms at Warner Brothers, Universal, CBS Radford, and Paramount Studios. As a trainee, I was then assigned to various production crews and began to get experience on the set of a different TV show, feature film or commercial every 3 or 4 weeks. When I found myself as the trainee on the set of Pennies From Heaven I couldn’t believe I was working with the likes of first assistant Alan Disler, camera operator Craig Denault and director of photography Gordon Willis. After a year, I joined the union, Local 659 of the IATSE as a second assistant cameraman.

Daniel Gold says, “I’ve been fascinated by photography my whole life. The power of the visual image as it magically appears in the developing tray or leaps onto the screen in a darkened movie theater always gets me. When I was a kid in New Jersey my dad and I built a darkroom in the basement. I spent countless hours shooting photos and enlarging images. My twin brother Michael and I made 8mm movies and charged the neighborhood kids to watch them. Our most successful production, a science fiction thriller entitled The Atomic Burp, grossed over $15 the first week in our basement. When my folks took us to see 2001 A Space Odyssey at Radio City in New York, I was hooked on movies. At Wesleyan University I majored in Biology and in Film Production. After teaching junior high school science for a few of years I left the east coast for Graduate School at USC in the film department. After USC, I was accepted into the Assistant Cameraman Training Program. I moved

I spent three years as a second during which time I was lucky enough to work with some of the best people in Hollywood including; Laszlo Kovacs, Sven Nykvist, Tag Fujimoto, Owen Roizman and their crews. Moving up to become a first assistant, my good fortune continued as I had the pleasure of pulling focus for Caleb Deschanel, Robbie Greenberg and Don Thorin, Sr., among others. After 10 years as a first assistant cameraman, Don Thorin, Sr. moved me up to camera operator. Now I’ve got the best job on the set. I get to see the movie before anyone else, right through the viewfinder on the camera. As a camera operator I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to operate the “A” camera for Directors of Photography; Michael Ballhaus, John Seale, Fred Elmes, Michael Chapman, Jeffrey Kimball, Larry Sher and Barry Peterson. For more than 20 years I’ve been able to contribute my talents as camera operator to some terrific projects. Spider-man, Air Force One, Primary Colors, The Perfect Storm, The Hangover, and 21 Jump Street were all amazing experiences for me. I’ve gotten to work with interesting and creative directors, actors, and cinematographers. In particular, Mike Nichols, Harrison Ford, Wolfgang Peterson, Barry Sonnenfeld, Ang Lee and Gordon Willis are my heroes. And -- somehow while all this was going on, I managed to stay happily married to my amazing wife, Nancy, while we raised three wonderful girls, Allie, Rickie and Jessie.”

Camera Technician Lifetime Achievement Award David Eubank David Eubank was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia and in high school became interested in photography when his oldest brother sent home a 35mm Pentax from Vietnam. Later that year, after cutting class to see Bob Rafelson’s Five Easy Pieces, Eubank knew he wanted to work on movies in any way possible. Good fortune came a couple of years later when he was able to witness the filming of Hal Ashby’s film, The Last Detail, in his hometown. While observing the camera crew he became instantly hooked, but it seemed like an impossible dream living three thousand miles from Hollywood. It took him a couple of years to discover that universities offered cinematography training, and in 1977 he received a Film Production BS degree from Southern Illinois University. He moved to New York City in 1978 to become a documentary cinematographer, and was soon hired as a camera assistant on a cinéma vérité documentary series. David says, “Mark Obenhaus gave me my first big job in the business, and afterwards his colleague John Lindley, ASC took me under his wing. The following year John and I worked on two episodes of another cinéma vérité series, and I was living my dream.”

In 1995 Eubank moved to Los Angeles, and now works on feature films, and the occasional commercial and episodic television series. His work has spanned documentaries and indie art films, to large blockbuster, historical costume and action films. In 2010, at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards, he was given an award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development for his software, pCAM FILM+DIGITAL PRO. In 2013, for the same cinematography software, he was honored by the Society of Camera Operators with another Technical Achievement Award. Eubank would like to thank the SOC for this cherished honor, and all of the cinema artists who have supported him through the years, and hopefully many years to come.

Distinguished Service Award Gale Anne Hurd This success was quickly followed by Aliens, which received seven nominations and two Academy Awards, and the Academy Award winning films The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and The Ghost and the Darkness. Hurd’s additional feature credits include the Academy Award nominated Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk, Tremors, Dante’s Peak, Æon Flux, The Punisher, Dick, and The Waterdance, which won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, and both the Audience and Screenplay Awards at the Sundance Film Festival.

Gale Anne Hurd, known as the “First Lady of Sci-Fi,” is a producer of Academy Award-winning films and Emmy-winning programs that shatter box office and ratings records. After climbing the ladder from executive assistant at Roger Corman’s New World Pictures to head marketing for the company, Hurd’s career as a Producer was launched when she produced and co-wrote The Terminator. The film received critical and commercial acclaim, including TIME Magazine’s “10 Best List.” It was recently recognized by the Library of Congress, which chose The Terminator to be included in its highly esteemed National Film Registry.

When Hurd decided to enter the television business, she did so with a bang as Executive Producer of The Walking Dead, which currently reigns as the most-watched scripted drama, beating all broadcast and cable series among adults 18-49. With 17.3 million viewers tuning in to the Season 5 premiere, the show will return for a sixth season. The American Film Institute honored the show in both 2010 and 2012 as a “Top 10” TV program. The series has also garnered two Emmy wins and was nominated by the Television Critics Association for “Program of the Year” in 2012. In 2014 The Walking Dead nabbed the People’s Choice awards for “Favorite Cable TV Drama” and “Favorite TV Anti-Hero.” Hurd is also a Consulting Producer on AMC’s top-rated spinoff talk show, Talking Dead, which recently logged 5.9 million viewers, a new series high. Hurd’s company, Valhalla Motion Pictures, has an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions to develop new television and digital programs. 1n 2015, Hurd will serve as an Executive Producer for AMC’s exciting new television pilot, a companion series to the hit show The Walking Dead, as well as Hunters, a straight to series order based on the Whitley Strieber novel “Alien Hunter” for the SyFy network. Natalie Chaidez (In Plain Sight and Heroes) is attached as the Showrunner. In addition she is actively developing a number of standalone projects, including an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s non-fiction best seller “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” with Showrunner Chris Carter (X-Files).

Hurd’s film, Very Good Girls, a coming-of-age drama turned on its head, premiered as an official selection at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Starring rising young stars Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen, the film was released theatrically during the summer of 2014. Hurd recently completed her term on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She currently serves on The Academy’s Science and Technology Council and is an officer of the Producers Guild of America, where she also co-founded their yearly ‘Produced By’ Conference. Hurd’s distinguished career has drawn the attention of her peers. This year Hurd was awarded the prestigious David O. Selznick Award for Achievement in Motion Pictures by the Producers Guild, joining past recipients including Stanley Kramer, Clint Eastwood, Jerry Bruckheimer, Kathleen Kennedy, and Steven Spielberg. In 2012, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2013, the Cartier Award at the Deauville American Film Festival along with Cate Blanchett and Nicolas Cage. Hurd is also the recipient of the 2013 DiGamma Kappa Award for Distinguished Service in Broadcasting from Grady College at the University of Georgia, home of the Peabody Awards. Last year she was honored with an induction into the International Women’s Forum Hall of Fame, which features such honorees as Rosa Parks, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Audrey Hepburn.

whom was Bo Miller who gave me my first job as a dolly grip, which I was eventually fired from for not having the experience it took to do the job. From that point on, I was determined to learn what it takes to become a dolly grip. With the help of many talented camera operators who were willing to help me to hone my craft, I acquired the skill set necessary to perform as a competent dolly grip. With good timing and some random luck, I have been given the opportunity to work on feature films for the last 25 years. The most rewarding aspect of my job is working with talented and passionate artists, both in front of and behind the camera. Every film has its unique challenges and presents opportunities that I continue to learn from. I believe I have one of the best jobs on a film set, and I look forward to new experiences and expanding my knowledge as a film technician.”

Mobile Camera Platform Operator Lifetime Achievement Award Alan “Moose” Shultz Alan “Moose” Shultz says, “I started my career in the film industry as a grip at Universal Studios in 1973 working on the night shift gang. I spent the next 5 years bouncing from studio to studio eventually landing at MGM, which became my home for the next 10 years. From 1981-1986 I was the Grip Department Head at MGM studios. During that time I met and became friends with many future key grips, one of

Still Photographer Lifetime Achievement Award Suzanne Hanover/SMPSP Suzanne Hanover says, ”My degrees in documentary filmmaking and fine art photography proved to be the perfect background to bring to a film set. I was born in Chicago and received both a BA and an MA in filmmaking/photography. I did post graduate studies with Ansel Adams, Robert Heinekin, and Sid Avery. In New York and Chicago I worked as a news photographer, culminating in Los Angeles as the West Coast Photo Editor for Associated Press Photos. I was hired to work on The Grifters, directed by Stephen Frears. During that job, I learned more about filmmaking than both my degrees combined, what a great film, what great actors! Next, I worked on the Academy Award-winning film, Leaving Las Vegas. My break into big union films was Sister Act. When that became a 200 million dollar box office hit, I became an “A” list photographer, and all the crewmembers benefited from its big box office returns. I went on to shoot five films in a row with Whoopi Goldberg and enjoyed that magic carpet ride! There was also a big change in the type of film I was working on, as not only were they “big” budget films, they were also comedic movies. Working on sets for as many hours as we do, it’s always been more enjoyable for me to work on a comedy. I find comedic actors, directors and writers a little smarter than the average bear.

In 1995, I became a founding member of The Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP), whose goals are not unlike the SOC’s. I’ve been on the board of the SMPSP for most of its 20 years existence. I’m currently serving as the President and look forward to passing on the baton. I live in Los Angeles, CA with my husband of 35 years, Robert Fowler, and two dogs and more cats than I want to say. My passions continue to be fine art photography, gardening, and cooking.”

Technical Achievement Award Teradek LLC, for the advancement of HD transmission and the Bolt line of products Since graduating as an Electronic Engineering more than 20 years ago, Nicol has gained electronic product development experience in the military, security, cinema and broadcast industries, all with a common focus on Digital Video. In 2013 Nicol joined the Vitec Group as Senior Vice President: Technology, with the acquisition of Teradek, where he now also contributes to the Group’s strategy, product roadmap and M&A activities. Nicol says, “The Teradek Bolt line of products was built in response to years of customer requests for an affordable, high performance wireless transmitter that doesn’t’t break the budget. Prior to its launch, wireless transmitters were typically bulky, heavy, and very expensive for the average shooter. To ensure this new product would appeal to a wide variety of filmmakers, our goal was to create a device that would easily fit any camera rig from the casual DSLR shooter up to the professional cinematographer.

In 2012, we launched the Bolt Pro, a zero latency uncompressed wireless video transmitter aimed squarely at video professionals, but at a price point that the common shooter could afford. In no time, demand for the product far exceeded our capacity to build it; we knew we had a hit. Despite Bolt’s initial popularity, early feedback from our professional users made it clear that our next revision would need to include a number of new features that were rarely found in other products.

Historical Shot Lifetime Achievement Award Andy Shuttleworth, Boogie Nights Andy Shuttleworth says, “I was born in London 1954 and educated in the south of England. I started working in the film and television industry in the late-1970’s and began operating cameras in 1982. I bought my first Steadicam in 1983 and operated Steadicam for Clive Tickner, Simon Kossoff, brother of Paul Kossoff, and others in the mid-1980’s. I then went on to work on numerous music videos and concerts around this time with cameramen such as; Steve Chivers and John Mathieson. In 1986, I married Schelley Kiah. My first movie credit was on Hardware operating Steadicam for Steve Chivers. This brings us to the 1990’s when I taught Steadicam at the National Film School for their short term course for three years. I also taught Steadicam in Holland on occasion during this time. I worked with Kenneth Branagh on three films including; Much Ado About Nothing, which was released in 1993. In 1994, I moved to Los Angeles and began to work non-union until I was able to obtain union status in 1996 on the film Boogie Nights. I’ve worked as a Steadicam operator now for 31 years and have also worked as a camera operator on numerous film and television projects based in Los Angeles during this time, many with Ralph Bode and John Bailey. I’m particularly proud of my work with Alex Nepomniashchy on Standing Up. I also worked with my friend, Sean Bobbit, on 12 Years a Slave. Schelley and I have now been married 28 years and she’s been the art department coordinator on NCIS for the last ten years. We live in Hollywood.”

Governors Lifetime Achievement Award Alfre Woodard fayette Reynolds, on HBO’s True Blood. Woodard co-starred in Lifetime’s hit remake of Steel Magnolias, in which she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild and Emmy Award and won a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Ouiser. She appeared in the critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave, directed by Steve McQueen, which won an Oscar for Best Picture. Most recently she was seen in New Line’s Annabelle and has a recurring role on TNT’s The Last Ship. She currently stars as Potus in the NBC drama series, State of Affairs.

In addition to her acting career, Woodard is a longtime activist. She co-founded Artists for a New South Africa, a nonprofit working to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and further the cause of democracy and human rights in South Africa. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. As part of her work on the Committee, Woodard has adopted several high-poverty and under-performing public schools around the country, including ReNew Cultural Arts Academy in New Orleans and Noel Community Arts School in Denver. She is an active advocate for the arts in education, largely through her work on the Committee’s “Turnaround Arts” initiative, which was launched in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Domestic Policy Council to narrow the achievement gap and increase student engagement through the arts. She directed and produced, “Nelson Mandela’s Favorite African Folktales,” which won the 2010 Audiobook of the Year, and garnered a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for “Best Children’s Spoken Word Album.” The audiobook hosts a collaboration of talent both broad and diverse, featuring: Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, and Samuel L. Jackson.

“Gone Girl was my second picture with director David Fincher. All the skill sets and techniques I picked up from my experience on The Social Network (2010) came rushing back. I’ve always said that the hardest thing for an operator is to understand exactly what the Director and DP are going for. I discovered that round two with Fincher was going to be easier. A big part of the reason why operating for Fincher is so enjoyable is that the way he shoots and moves the camera is exactly what I love seeing as viewer. As a camera operator, I’ve never done better work than when I operate for him. It is and will always be a career highpoint.”

“Into the Storm is a story about a group of storm chasers told as if it was their footage being used. Most of this picture was shot handheld.

“In February 2013, Emmanuel Lubezky (Chivo) invited me to join Birdman. The concept of shooting a film in an apparently single shot, has precedence back to Hitchcock’s Rope, but the intimacy, energy and scope of Birdman, set it apart. Alejandro González Iñárritu brought this unusual story into production driven by contagious passion. In uncharted territory, we attacked each day with uncertainty, shedding many of the cinematic staples. It was both exhilarating and terrifying. Crew and actors invested heavily as the shots developed along with many moving parts. It was truly a collaborative effort with Chivo doing substantial hand-held portions of the film. What confidence we both may have had, was directly fueled by Gregor Tavenner’s sublime focus and support.”

“Working on The Maze Runner was an exciting, but hard experience. First time director (Wes Ball), Louisiana in the middle of the summer, and we had to deal with poisonous snakes and humidity etc. Wes was very collaborative and he listened to the knowledge I could offer from my years of experience. It was a very physical job, I kind of figured it would be, with the word “Runner” in the title haha! I was chasing kids that were less than half my age, through mazes and tunnels and fields, but somehow I managed to keep up with them. It was very rewarding in the end, and I feel that the film turned out to be a very visually exciting, taught thriller.”

As a camera operator the greatest gift is a director who is clear and not ambiguous with what he/ she is looking for. Into the Storm director Steven Quale has that gift. I needed to know precisely what VFX elements would be added later in order to compose, on the run, for things that were not there. Every now and then, as a camera operator, a picture comes along that taps into everything you have. All your skills, instincts, courage and physical endurance get challenged everyday. Into the Storm was definitely one of those.”

Ted Melfi was our director and this was his first time helming a feature. He was extremely prepared and boarded everything prior to filming, but at the same time constantly told John and I “to make it better.” We took that to heart and John, as usual, let me have a tremendous amount of input as far as shot layout and execution. The whole shoot was memorable for me because it was such a great cast and crew and we really had an incredible time. I know that sounds trite but it’s true.”

During the fourth season of most shows that are doing well it would seem normal for the crew to put in less hours with everything simplified as if on cruise control. Scandal has been anything but that. We’ve worked harder, longer and the storylines have gotten even more complex. And I can say this…the entire crew, especially our camera department, has the same drive for perfection that we have had since the show began. If it was me alone on Scandal, I would never have received this nomination. I give credit to the entire camera crew and our dolly grips because together we make a pretty damn good team.”

“Banshee is the story of a messed up family in a twisted town. As the crew shooting Banshee, it’s the opposite—we’re family. DP Chris Faloona, Operators Paige Thomas, Chris Schenck, Assistants Jeff Graham, Alan Newcomb and Bill Marti all make it possible to laugh through the challenges on set and still want to hang out afterwards. DP, Christopher Faloona, is one of the best cinematographers I’ve ever worked with and we’re in sync with camera movement and placement. After 20 episodes, we’ve learned many shortcuts. Executive Producer/Director, Greg Yaitanes, is a filmmaker and a great storyteller who relies on my instincts and encourages me to look for new and innovative ways to lens Banshee to best tell the story.”

“My nomination for HBO’s True Detective includes a nod to ALL involved in the show, especially to the hard working Departments that made episode four’s, “The Stash House,” six minute shot, possible. So many visual aspects came together over the course of the show, not only the amazing talent of Matthew and Woody, but the vision and confidence of Director Cary Fukunaga. One of my favorite setups was a long dolly shot as Matthew and Woody arrive in their vehicle, Matthew gets out then turns to see a flock of starlings in the sky form the spiral symbol synonymous with the cult they are investigating. And —thanks to Adam Arkapaw for the opportunity to work in outstanding shots throughout.”

“I started watching The Walking Dead when the pilot aired. Frank Darabont directed an amazing show and after seeing it, I was hooked. I started on the show at the beginning of Season Four and have gone from ‘C’ Camera Operator to ‘A’ Camera Operator. We shoot primes. Make “movies.” We attempt to create a cinematic experience on The Walking Dead, and pay close attention to how and when we move the camera, how we shoot our close ups and how we frame for our ‘heroes.’

Through studying the pilot dailies and interpreting David’s style, the Director of Photography, Eigil Bryld, and I developed a wonderful relationship composing the frames and choreographing the moves. I’ve continued on the show, and we’ve just finishing our third season. Igor Martinovic shot season two and Martin Algren finished our third. The formal elegance of the photography, with precise moves and locked off frames, is a welcome contrast from the years of handheld. I look at House of Cards as the restraint of operating.“

Over the past 20+ years, Bruce Carse, has produced, hosted and moderated hundreds of Q&As for the film industry. He’s an awards strategist, working on Oscar® campaigns for all the major studios and many filmmaking teams.

Lauren was born in New Zealand, and grew up between New Zealand and the U.S., living in Alaska, Seattle, and Hawaii.

Joyce Kurtz has worked on hundreds of television and radio commercials, cartoons & video games. She’s known for being the voice of MTV and Princess Leia in Star Wars Video Games. In the late 1980’s she formed “Joyce’s Voices,” a loop group and has coordinated the group ADR on hundreds of TV shows such as; The Wonder Years, Party of 5, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, House, Dexter, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Banshee, and The Following. Joyce and her daughter, Lily, would like to express their extreme gratitude to the SOC for all they do for The Vision Center Children’s Hospital. Coincidentally, Lily is a patient of Dr. Borchert’s and a part of his ONH study at Children’s Hospital.

Bruce is a visual storytelling and marketing specialist. He teaches entrepreneurs, executives, politicians, speakers, filmmakers and other creative artists how to use visual storytelling to connect with their audiences, prospects and customers at a deep, emotional level. Creativity is his standard. His unconventional brainstorming, bold ideas and intensely vivid storytelling set him apart from the competition.

She began her acting career in Seattle and continued it in New Zealand, working on shows there including Evil Dead, Outrageous Fortune, and Legend of the Seeker. Lauren returned to LA in January 2013. Last year, she starred opposite John Malkovich in NBC’s show Crossbones, and has two features slated for release in 2015, Relentless and Monday at 11:01am. Lauren has also appeared in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, Spartacus, and Parks and Recreation.

Judd Apatow Judd Apatow is considered one of the most sought-after comedy minds in the business and is closely associated with many of the biggest comedy films and hit TV shows worldwide. His feature directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which he also co-wrote, garnered numerous awards, including a nomination for Best Original Screenplay from the Writers Guild of America. Apatow produced the most successful R-rated female comedy of all time, Bridesmaids, which received several awards including Oscar® nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. In addition to several other successful feature films and television projects, Apatow is currently the executive producer of HBO’s Girls, which received five Emmy nominations and a win for Outstanding Casting in a Comedy Series in 2012 and in 2013.

Mark August is a veteran camera operator and filmmaker. His experience in the United States Navy of 25 years as a combat photographer behind a camera sharpened his skills as a camera operator. He’s also a veteran of the Desert Storm War in 1991 and the Global War on Terrorism in Afghanistan. A current member of the Navy Dive Undersea Rescue Command (the US Navy’s only submarine rescue unit), Mark will retire in March 2015 with an Honorable Discharge, into retirement for the Armed Forces Reserves.

British born Esmé Bianco is an internationally acclaimed film and television actress, best known for her role as Ros in the Emmy Award-winning show, Game of Thrones.

Actor, producer, Kim Coates, is best known for his portrayal of “Tig” on the FX hit series Sons of Anarchy. His acting career has spanned all genres, including film, television, and over fifty plays on stage.

Nate Corddry hails from Boston, and is a graduate of Colby-Sawyer College. He got his start in television as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Other television credits include; Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, United States of Tara, The Pacific, 30 Rock, New Girl, Mom, Children’s Hospital, and Harry’s Law, where he spent an awful lot of time with tonite’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Daniel Gold. Film credits include; St. Vincent, The Heat, Yogi Bear, 6 Souls, The Invention of Lying, and The Ugly Truth. Nate’s also spent parts of nine summers at the Williamstown Theater Festival and is the host of a top ranked i-tunes podcast about reading and literature called Reading Aloud.

Mark’s a member of the Camera Guild Local 600, Veterans in Film and Television (VFT), founding member of the Digital Cinema Society, and a proud member of the Society of Camera Operators for whom he serves as President.

Bianco’s acting career started with performances in music videos for Robbie Williams and Slayer, and UK television appearances on BBC and Channel 4; before she was cast as Ros in the pilot episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Although originally cast in the pilot for only one scene opposite Peter Dinklage, Bianco’s talent spoke volumes and changed the course of the series. Astounded by her single performance, executives boldly swayed from the books on which Game of Thrones is based, turning Ros, a one time guest star fabricated for the pilot into a series regular.

Kim’s film career began in 1991 with The Last Boy Scout. Since then, he has starred in over fifty films, including Academy Award winners Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor. At the AOF International Film Festival in Pasadena, Kim received the Half Life Achievement Award for acting in 2009 and best actor for playing Steve Sorrano in King of Sorrow. Kim Coates has continually proven himself to be a leading force in the world of acting and his versatile volume of work speaks for itself.

Eric Fletcher, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, originally had plans to be an aerospace engineer like most of his family. But the lure of bright lights ensured that he enter the film industry. While still living in St. Louis, Eric shot the image campaigns and special project documentaries for the local CBS affiliate which netted him multiple Emmy wins for best cinematography. After cutting his teeth on music videos and political campaigns, he decided to bring his Camera and Steadicam talent to LA where he’s enjoyed contributing to the iconic looks of TV series such as; Dexter, True Blood, Shameless and many others. Eric’s interests also include consulting on the development of camera equipment.

Michael Frediani served as the SOC President (1995-96 & 2011-12), is currently SOC Sergeant-at-Arms of the Society and is a long-time SOC Board member. A graduate of Columbia College Hollywood, Michael was a camera assistant for 12 years and a camera operator for the past 25 years. He directed and produced the short film Slick. Frediani has also served on the National Executive Board of International Cinematographers Guild since 2005. He’s chairman of their Heritage Committee while also chairing the SOC’s Historical Committee. Recent camera operating credits include; Eastbound & Down, Bones, Mad Men and Masters of Sex, and South of Hell. “It’s a privilege to work in this industry that is both challenging and rewarding.”

Erin Gray is an actress, motivational speaker, writer, talent agent and Tai Chi teacher. On screen she redefined America’s public’s image of the ideal woman as Colonel Deering in the feature film and TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and the award-winning TV Series Silver Spoons. With a career spanning dozens of TV series, TV Movies and feature films, Erin received the award for Best Actress in a Feature Film at the Monaco Film Festival in 2012 for Dreams Awake.

Decorated with many awards, including his induction to the Fangoria Magazine Hall Of Fame, Doug is probably the most famous person you’ve never seen. His iconic work under prosthetic make-ups have inspired journalists to call him “Today’s Lon Chaney.” Such roles as Abe Sapien in Hellboy 1 & Hellboy 2, the Silver Surfer in Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, Pan (the Faun) and the Pale Man in the Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth, and as the lead alien in The Watch. He currently stars as Cochise on Falling Skies, Sunday nights on TNT.

Erin founded Heroes For Hire, a personal appearance agency dedicated to matching celebrities to events where they can inspire, motivate and entertain. Heroes for Hire works with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

Michael Kelly has been seen as Doug Stamper in House of Cards. He is currently filming The Secret in their Eyes and will soon be seen in Everest, and Viral.

A veteran actor of over 100 episodes of television and films, Charles Rahi Chun has had a great appreciation for camera departments over the last 23 years. He played Dr. Wen on Scrubs for 5 seasons, in addition to parts on television series such as; House, Castle, Bones, Crash, Monk, 24, Boston Legal, ER, Undercovers, Criminal Minds, Taejung’s Lament, Lie To Me, Law & Order: LA, and Las Vegas to name a few. In addition to being shot on feature film sets by the camera teams on Next, The Brothers Solomon, MI:3, and Deep Impact, most recently, he had fun with the camera crew shooting a modest little comedy called The Interview.

Matthew Rauch is Clay Burton on Banshee, currently airing its third season on Cinemax. Film credits include; The Wolf of Wall Street, Labor Day, Antidote, Premium Rush, and No Reservations. On TV, he’s had recurring roles on Blue Bloods, Believe, and Treme, and appeared on The Blacklist, The Good Wife, Without a Trace and many more. Extensive New York theater credits include revivals of The Merchant of Venice (with Al Pacino) and Prelude to a Kiss on Broadway, and plays at Signature Theatre, Playwrights’ Horizons, Shakespeare in the Park, Red Bull, MCC, and the New Group, along with the title role in Macbeth at Hartford Stage, for which he received the Connecticut Critics Circle award for Best Actor in a Play.

Roach is best known for directing the comedy classic trilogy Austin Powers, for directing and producing Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. He also directed Mystery, Alaska, starring Russell Crowe and Campaign, starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as political rivals. Other producing credits include Academy Award nominated Borat and Brüno, starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Roach gained critical acclaim winning Emmys for the HBO political hits Game Change, and Recount. Game Change also won him a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award. Roach also produced the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy Sisters, which premieres Christmas 2015. He’s in post-production on Trumbo, about the Hollywood screenwriter who was blacklisted in the 1940s, and is in post-production on the HBO comedy series The Brink.

Kelly’s other feature film credits include: Changeling, Generation Kill, Now You See, Man of Steel, Chronicle, The Adjustment Bureau, Fair Game, Law Abiding Citizen, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Invincible, Dawn of the Dead, and more. On television, Kelly has had recurring roles on The Good Wife, Person of Interest and The Sopranos, and had a series regular role in Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, Kojak, and Level 9. Kelly is a lifetime member of The Actor’s Studio and resides in New York City with his wife, daughter and son.

Lisa Stacilauskas, SOC has worked on numerous TV shows, documentaries, web series, short films and music video projects for: HBO, Disney, Hallmark, MTV, Comedy Central, ABC, NBC, and CBS as well as numerous independent productions. Recent camera operator TV credits Include: Stalker, Teen Wolf, Key & Peele, Community, Getting On, Homeland Security USA, Comedians of Comedy and Disney Channel’s Starstruck. Lisa has served as Director of Photography on numerous award wining short films including: Dot Got Shot, Trysting, and Prescription (for Happiness) as well as the independent web series, Divergence, and indie feature films: Marriage Material, The System is Broken, and the award winning, Thursday’s Speaker, for which she was nominated for Best Cinematography at The Indie Gathering - 2013.

Being Hawaii born and raised, I was given my first taste of the film industry on the original Hawaii 5-0. I can still hear the theme song and the screeching sound of tires as cars passed through frame. After paying my dues at CBS Redford, Fox, Warner Bros. and Universal Studios, I was allowed to grip on several TV shows before becoming a lot Best Boy at Warner Brothers. Eventually I was given an opportunity to key my first show and surrounded myself with an incredibly talented crew. After all these years, I’m still amazed to watch so many talented minds, artist, technicians, visionaries and the old mighty bean counters collaborate and create what we know as film.

From his spectacular motion picture debut in 1967 in two of the motion picture industry’s most classic films, In the Heat of the Night for director Norman Jewison and In Cold Blood for Richard Brooks, to his roles as Sam Braun in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and as Hershel Greene in The Walking Dead, Wilson’s performances, whether in a leading role or as a special guest, have traditionally been singled out as highlights in more than seventy key motion pictures and carefully selected television productions.

Born in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, Bellamy Young graduated from Yale University with degrees in English & Theater Studies, and a certificate from Oxford University in England. Bellamy is best known for her extensive television resume, particularly her roles as ‘Beth Clemmons’ on CBS’s Criminal Minds, ‘ASA Monica West’ on CBS’s CSI: Miami, ‘Dr. Miller’ on (then) NBC’s Scrubs, and ‘Ellen Darling’ on ABC’s Dirty Sexy Money. Bellamy can currently be seen in her award winning role as First Lady Mellie Grant on ABC’s hit series Scandal and in the upcoming Zoe Cassavetes’ film, Day out of Days. Young is also working on an adult contemporary album that will include covers of Fleetwood Mac, Tom Waits and Ryan Adams.

He’s received numerous festival awards and was honored by Screen Actors Guild with the Ralph Morgan Award. Wilson lives in Los Angeles and has been married for 37 years to artist/activist/attorney, Heavenly Wilson.
