Merry Christmas From The CameraPro Team! As 2021 comes to an end, we’d like to extend our sincere thank you to our community and customers. Our new Sydney store had limited opportunity to open its doors for browsing this year. Still, our passionate sales team offered excellent service in every way possible to our local customers. Click and collect remained operative for most of the lockdowns, and our Sydney warehouse shipped local orders so NSW customers could receive their orders quicker. Following strong demand from our customers and community, we continued to use our live streaming technology to increase the frequency of our webinars, live events and interviews. We proudly launched our ‘On The Couch’ series with the support of Canon Australia, where we were joined by well-known photographers such as Kelly Brown, Darren Jew and Mark Horsburgh for illuminating conversation. Who would you like to see next year? And that brings us to 2022. We are very much looking forward to interacting with everyone locally again. With the nation opening up and travel resuming, our team is ready to support and advise our customers as they head out to create and capture memorable moments. We’re also on track to be a carbon-neutral business by the end of 2022. We look forward to scaling our impact in the new year and are committed to planting 100,000 trees. All of us wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy new year. Keep safe, The CameraPro Team

here’s nothing more powerful than a community with a cause. But any cause needs support and gaining support needs exposure. Every year we donate at least $12,500 to Australian photographers and filmmakers to support causes and tell stories that make a difference.
“Thanks to the CameraPro Explorers Grant, I am creating a short film to delve deeper and to share stories from the oldest
continually evolving rainforest in the world, the Daintree Rainforest which is very dear to my heart. Furthermore, CameraPro has also donated to Rainforest Rescue enabling the planting of more trees and ensuring that more rainforest is protected forever thus creating wildlife corridors for endangered and threatened species such as the Southern Cassowary and Bennett’s Tree Kangaroo.”

Full-Frame Hybrid Camera
As the successor to the Sony A7 III, the a7 IV offers premium functionalities for the new generation of image-makers with a recently developed image sensor, latest-generation BIONZ XR processor, and AF capabilities.
Product Features: • • • • • •
33MP Exmor R Sensor Bionz XR Processor Up to 10fps 5.5 Stops Internal SteadyShot 4K60p / FHD 120p 10bit 4:2:2 Colour Sampling
• • • • • •
3.0 Type Vari-Angle LCD Dual Card Slot Real-time Eye AF for humans, animals and birds Real-time Tracking 658 grams (Inc. battery + memory card) S-Log3/S-Cinetone
Kudos on the Autofocus As one of the main attributes every photographer looks for in a camera, the Sony a7 IV has really nailed AF here. For starters, the camera comes with real-time eye AF for humans, animals, and birds, allowing you to lock on the subject’s eye. It’s the first Sony full-frame camera to have real-time eye AF to track birds. As if this isn’t enough, the a7 IV includes Sony’s impressive 4D FOCUS system which utilises up to 759 phase-detection AF points to cover approximately 94% of the sensor. You will be able to lock on and track your targets with incredible accuracy. We all know how important speed is when refocusing, and no doubt photographers will be grateful this has cut the time needed to refocus by around 30%. The a7 IV also boasts precise subject recognition AI tracking to keep chasing your targets in real-time at high speed. It does this using a newly developed advanced algorithm. 8
1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au
Advanced Image Quality & Features The Sony a7 IV has made some important leaps beyond its predecessor when it comes to image quality. We found it excellent in low light, thanks to the new processor/sensor combination that helps reduce noise even though it keeps the same native ISO range of 100-51200 as the a7 III. The burst buffer has been vastly increased to more than 800 with JPEG and RAW (up from 182 JPEG in its predecessor). The 5.5 stops of stabilisation will be greatly appreciated by anyone shooting handheld. The 5.5 stop shutter speed advantage means that the giro will help counteract shaky hands during the most difficult shooting circumstances. This technology has also been included in video stabilisation with optical Active Mode, which slightly crops but keeps 4k resolution minimising the need for always carrying a gimbal or stabiliser. Another important spec to call out is the 3.68 million dot resolution EVF. This is a decent step up from the a7 III’s 2.36 million. The LCD has also been given a side hinge allowing for full vari-angle rotation like the a7S III. And with a shooting speed of 10 fps, you will easily be able to capture fast sequences.
Boosted Movie Capability As a mid-tier level camera, it is one of the best hybrid options out there. Sony has made some pretty serious advancements to this model which will no doubt have professionals and hobbyists excited. It comes with S-Cinetone™ shooting mode so you can add a pre-filter to capture a cinema-style look while filming. It also offers Creative Look in movie mode to give you different parameters to choose from. The 10bit 4:2:2 colour sampling has a massive colour gamut and a notably larger range than what was built into the a7 III (8bit / 4:2:0). You’ll find it offers a smoother colour gradation and a more vibrant depth of colour. With approximately 15-stops of dynamic range from shadow to highlight the outcome is more tonality. Video allows for 4k up at 60fps or with 7K oversampling you can shoot at 30fps. This camera will also let you record without binning so you don’t lose any details. A key concern for most videographers is overheating. That won’t be a problem here as the new heat sink means you can record for over one hour without experiencing overheating, even at 4K 60p 10 Bit 4:2:2. This can be a real issue for many cameras when recording movies for this long at this quality. Watch our Sony A7 IV review.

Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
The EOS R3 camera’s features greatly emphasise superb AF performance and speed with fast-moving subjects. It is designed to meet professionals’ reliability and durability demands, even when working in highly challenging conditions.
Product Features: • 24.1MP Full Frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS Sensor & DIGIC X Processor • Up to 8 Stops Coordinated Control IS with In-Body IS • Eye Control AF Technology • 576 EFV
• Advanced subject tracking of humans, animals and motorsports • 30fps continuous shooting with electronic shutter • Optical Smart Controller • 41.5M Dot 3.2” Vari-Angle LCD • Dual Card Slots
Delivers 30fps RAW Shooting Speed In electronic shutter mode, the Canon EOS R3 will deliver up to 30fps continuous raw with full AF and AE tracking. Of course, with speed like that, it begs the question, what about rolling shutter? It’s safe to say the combination of stacked sensor and Digic X processor will go a long way to mitigating image warping. The mechanical shutter isn’t lazy either, offering a tidy 12fps. Usually a disaster, or just plain impossible, the electronic shutter mode will support speedlite shooting. Although not the first camera to offer this, it’s still a relatively new advancement and will be new to EOS cameras. Imagine the light show when shooting 30fps at 1/180 with a flash! 1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au
13
Advanced AF Technology with 100% Coverage Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF will offer 100% coverage of the focus area, which is made of 1,053 automatically selected AF zones. When using the multi-controller (AF joystick), there are up to 4779 user-selectable AF point positions available. With that much AF coverage, you’ll be glad to know that the EOS R3 also includes an optical smart controller first seen in the EOS 1DX III. It’s essentially a touchpad built into the AF-ON button that allows photographers to adjust the AF point quickly by moving their thumb across the control. The Canon EOS R3 builds on the already impressive subject-tracking capabilities of the EOS R5 to include cars and motorcycles. Given Canon is an industry leader in deep learning AF tracking algorithms, one can expect the motorsport AF will work extremely well.
Improved Eye Control AF Technology Perhaps the most interesting AF update is the inclusion of Eye Control AF technology. Unique to Canon, this allows photographers to select and change the focus point using their eye through the viewfinder. This is not a new concept; Canon first included Eye Control AF in a select few of their film cameras throughout the 1990s. The feature received mixed reviews and never made the jump across to digital cameras - until now. You will likely have to spend a bit of time getting it calibrated, and Canon notes that certain factors and individual eye characteristics may make it unusable. However, with loads of tech advancements since its initial inception, it will be really interesting to see how this new/old feature performs. Between the touch LCD, multi-controller, smart controller, and Eye Control AF, photographers will have more options than ever when it comes to selecting focus and can therefore choose what works best for them.

Medium Format Mirrorless Camera
The GFX 50S Mark II features a 51.4MP sensor that boasts incredible image-resolving power, capturing every detail in sharpness.
Top Features: • • • • •
Compact, portable large format camera body with Bionz XR Processor 51.4MP CMOS sensor (1.7x larger than full frame) 5-axis IBIS offering up to 6.5 stops of stabilisation 19 Film Simulations, including “Nostalgic Neg.” Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function, capable of creating 200MP true color images
Recently, a few of the CameraPro team were lucky enough to get their hands on the new GFX 50S II; Fujifilm’s latest instalment to their GFX line-up. While we each only had a small window of time to play around, we’ve compiled our collective first thoughts to share with you.
Comfortable & Ergonomic Design Reminiscent in both size and weight to a full-frame DSLR, each of the team found it ergonomically on point. The grip is comfortable to hold, the camera feels secure in hand, and vital controls are within reach of your fingertips. Those with larger hands might consider grabbing the additional MHG-GFX S metal handgrip for a smidge more grip length. As a bonus, this will protect the bottom of the camera and provide you with a very useful arca swiss mounting plate!
18
1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au
Outstanding In-Body Image Stabilisation Probably the most appreciated upgrade is the addition of in-body image stabilisation (IBIS). The Fujifilm GFX 50S II’s predecessor was already regarded as an outstanding choice for landscape and studio photographers but the inclusion of IBIS will put this Mk II on the radar of photographers who regularly shoot handheld with longer focal lengths and at lower shutter speeds and ISOs.
Amazing Detail with Very Low Noise With 51.4MP on a sensor that is approximately 1.7x larger than full-frame, it’s hard not to swoon at the resolving detail. These big pixels reproduce loads of tonality with very low noise, and as is always the case with Fujifilm, the colour detail is second to none. If 50MP isn’t enough for you, the GFX 50S II now has multi-shot mode, which utilises pixel shift technology to create a 200MP image reproduction … holy mega storage requirements! Basically, if image quality is your main wish, this camera will have it in droves.
Fast Focus with Capable CDAF Performance When coming from high-end APS-C and full frame cameras, there will be the expectation for a faster and more sophisticated AF system which is not entirely unreasonable at this price point in 2021. But let’s not get this bent out of shape; we all agreed that this will still be one of the fastest focusing medium format cameras on the market and the inclusion of the new X Processor 4 has added a nice little boost to the very capable CDAF performance.

Video Content Creation: Gear to Get Started So you have your social media account set up, and you’ve mapped out the unique ideas, stories and information you wish to share. What gear do you need to get going? Here’s a breakdown of some startup video creation and vlogging equipment that will help you create better content, engage your audience, and get them hitting that ‘subscribe’ button.
CAMERA
For solo creators who are filming themselves, a side-opening, vari-angle LCD screen is a must as it will allow you to check your framing from in front of the camera. If it’s a touch screen that’s even better. Autofocus is one of the most important camera features for creating good-looking video content, fast. In particular, great Lockon Tracking, Face Detection and Eye AF performance in your vlog camera will make shooting so much easier. Super shaky footage is never great to watch. It’s hard to follow what’s happening and is highly distracting. In-built image stabilisation (IBIS) in your camera can help to keep the movement smooth and steady. If you want to record high-quality audio (you do), then look for a vlog camera that allows you to connect an external mic. With some stretch in your budget, you may want to consider an action camera or a drone as a second camera. These types of cameras are fantastic for capturing establishing shots, transitional shots, and B-roll, all of which can improve the flow of your video. 30

LENS
FOCAL LENGTH Like all photography and videography, your lens choice will depend on your content but generally speaking, wide is where it’s at for piece to camera shots. As a guide, if you are using an on-camera mic or plan to film yourself handheld, you will need something like a 16-35mm vlog camera lens. With this wider field of view, you or your subject can stay within arm’s length of your camera-mounted microphone, in return giving you the clearest possible audio. Pop a longer lens for that talking head style shot, and you’ll end up with a talking eyeball shot instead. APERTURE If you expect to do lots of video creation in low-light situations, you will want to choose a lens with a faster aperture to let in more light. A vlog camera lens with a wide aperture will also give you more depth of field flexibility and help separate your subject from the background.
AUDIO
Don’t neglect your audio! As video content creators, it’s easy to get so caught up in the visuals, that you forget to check the sound. But it doesn’t matter how great your footage is, if your audio is poor, your audience will tune out. Basically, you want your audio to sound so good, that no one notices it. One of the best vlogging microphones is a shotgun mic that attaches easily to your camera’s hot shoe and will get you great audio every time your subject is within close range.
Walk-and-talk style shots are great for generating a sense of spontaneity but can be a headache to watch if the camera movement is too erratic. If your talent likes to roam about, then a gimbal could be your next best friend. Vlogging gimbals range in size and functionality so get one that’s suitable for your particular class of camera and turn those jittery walking sessions into smooth, buttery content. If you are the star of your own show you might find hand holding a gimbal and camera while filming yourself a bit awkward and weighty. Instead a small, flexible leg, table top tripod could be the ideal solution if you want to hybridise run and gun shooting with a standard sit down piece to cam.
LIGHTING
Whether you are filming sit-down shots in your studio or grabbing run-and-gun footage on location, a good quality shotgun mic will last you for years and be an invaluable addition to your filming kit. When your subject needs to be a greater distance from the camera, a wireless transmitter and receiver kit is the way to go. The receiver slides onto the hot shoe and connects easily to your camera via the external microphone port, while the transmitter can be attached discretely to your subject. For even cleaner audio, just attach a lapel mic to the transmitter. This audio solution allows your subject to step away from the camera and move where they need.
TRIPOD OR GIMBAL
Without light, what’s the point of even hitting record? You can invest in the best low-light camera on the market, but if your scene is underexposed, you’ll need some postproduction wizardry to save your footage. Not only will quality lighting elevate your video content and keep your audience engaged, it is also a key storytelling tool. When executed well, great lighting will convey emotion and highlight your particular personal brand. Just like your audio equipment, good vlog lights will last many years if you look after them. For video creation, your lighting will need to be continuous and preferably have adjustable power and colour temperature.

On The Couch with Kristina Wild
‘There’s always something you can relate to someone with, and it’s just about being warm and going up and having a chat. And then you get really good photos.’ Many people dream of being their own boss and travelling the world doing what they love. Through years of dedicated learning and hard work, wedding and portrait photographer Kristina Wild has made that dream her reality. As part of our On The Couch series, we had the chance to sit down with Kristina. Through the conversation, we explored favourite gear, the power of authenticity when connecting with clients and the importance of evolving to stay fresh and current. In 2008, Kristina purchased her first DSLR, a Canon 40D with the 18-55mm kit lens. Driven to learn the craft of photography, she consumed hours of YouTube, sifted through endless online articles and connected with other photographers to find out how to achieve specific techniques. But perhaps most importantly, she practised a LOT by taking more than a million photos just around her home. 32

‘It was just so exciting to me; I just really fixated on being able to make a better photo every time. And to this day, I still haven’t taken my best photo; I’ll never take it.’ Kristina quickly outgrew the kit lens that came with her Canon 40D and grabbed herself the muchbeloved Canon 50mm f/1.8 or ‘nifty fifty’. The wide aperture of the 50mm prime lens helped Kristina realise the look she had been searching for and allowed her to begin developing a style of her own. Since then, she has gone on to shoot hundreds of weddings and more than a thousand family photo sessions across Australia and the world. Today her go-to kit includes two Canon 5D IV bodies and several prime lenses. Kristina has the two bodies harnessed to her for quick access, ensuring she captures every unpredictable moment of gold.
The 50mm remains Kristina’s focal length of choice, but she has upgraded to the pro-level L series f/1.2 version, which she tells us is on her camera 95% of the time. When photographing a ceremony, Kristina prefers to step back, switching out the 50mm for the 85mm or 135mm. The longer focal length allows her to capture special memories without encroaching on the couple’s intimate moments.
‘That’s [50mm lens] my mind’s eye, that’s what I see. It’s such a robust lens that you can use in any situation.’ The Canon EF 24mm F/1.4 III USM lives on her other camera body serving multiple purposes. Kristina tells us it makes a great macro lens, is perfect for unexpected moments and always joins her when she hits the dancefloor. It’s easy to see why Kristina has become so successful as a wedding photographer. Weddings are notoriously challenging, and the stakes are high. Many would crumble under the pressure; Kristina thrives on ‘MacGyvering’ her way out of a challenging wedding day.
‘What I say to all my couples on their wedding day is that “the only thing you can control is your attitude”.’ As if photographing a wedding isn’t hectic enough, Kristina also takes on the role of unofficial bridesmaid or groomsman, acting as a ‘power ranger’ to deflect any negative energy away from her couple or the people in that circle. When she was younger, Kristina worked as a checkout operator and attributes this to how she learned to have fast conversations. Now when she goes into a wedding, she can chat quickly with everyone in the room, working out their vibe and what they’re into so she can relate to them through a common interest, be it football, music or even Ru Paul’s Drag Race.
‘There’s always something you can relate to someone with, and it’s just about being warm and going up and having a chat. And then you get really good photos.’ To this day, Kristina has never advertised. All her work has come to her organically. Either through social media, connecting with family and guests at a wedding or chance meetings on the other side of
the world. Not afraid to speak to random strangers, Kristina will happily go up to someone and ask, ‘can I please make your photo?’, or simply tell them she likes their hat. During her second pregnancy, Kristina decided she didn’t want to return to her previous job’s 9-5 time restrictions. Instead, she wanted to do something moving forward that would give her greater flexibility, free time and allow her to travel with her family. And although her work has allowed her to travel extensively, she has had no free time in nearly ten years. Like many, Kristina feels the recent pandemic has taught her the value of slowing down. Moving forward, she plans to outsource her editing, something she never thought she would do. Of course, she will still curate the photo selection but removing the editing will reduce her workload significantly. Through reflection, Kristina realised this would allow her to focus all her energy on photography, being present with her family and even having a little time for herself. In the future, Kristina’s biggest professional goal is to photograph the wedding of someone she photographed as a newborn.
