Full-Frame Hybrid Camera

As the successor to the Sony A7 III, the a7 IV offers premium functionalities for the new generation of image-makers with a recently developed image sensor, latest-generation BIONZ XR processor, and AF capabilities.

Product Features: • • • • • •

33MP Exmor R Sensor Bionz XR Processor Up to 10fps 5.5 Stops Internal SteadyShot 4K60p / FHD 120p 10bit 4:2:2 Colour Sampling

• • • • • •

3.0 Type Vari-Angle LCD Dual Card Slot Real-time Eye AF for humans, animals and birds Real-time Tracking 658 grams (Inc. battery + memory card) S-Log3/S-Cinetone

Kudos on the Autofocus As one of the main attributes every photographer looks for in a camera, the Sony a7 IV has really nailed AF here. For starters, the camera comes with real-time eye AF for humans, animals, and birds, allowing you to lock on the subject’s eye. It’s the first Sony full-frame camera to have real-time eye AF to track birds. As if this isn’t enough, the a7 IV includes Sony’s impressive 4D FOCUS system which utilises up to 759 phase-detection AF points to cover approximately 94% of the sensor. You will be able to lock on and track your targets with incredible accuracy. We all know how important speed is when refocusing, and no doubt photographers will be grateful this has cut the time needed to refocus by around 30%. The a7 IV also boasts precise subject recognition AI tracking to keep chasing your targets in real-time at high speed. It does this using a newly developed advanced algorithm. 4

Advanced Image Quality & Features The Sony a7 IV has made some important leaps beyond its predecessor when it comes to image quality. We found it excellent in low light, thanks to the new processor/sensor combination that helps reduce noise even though it keeps the same native ISO range of 100-51200 as the a7 III. The burst buffer has been vastly increased to more than 800 with JPEG and RAW (up from 182 JPEG in its predecessor). The 5.5 stops of stabilisation will be greatly appreciated by anyone shooting handheld. The 5.5 stop shutter speed advantage means that the giro will help counteract shaky hands during the most difficult shooting circumstances. This technology has also been included in video stabilisation with optical Active Mode, which slightly crops but keeps 4k resolution minimising the need for always carrying a gimbal or stabiliser. Another important spec to call out is the 3.68 million dot resolution EVF. This is a decent step up from the a7 III’s 2.36 million. The LCD has also been given a side hinge allowing for full vari-angle rotation like the a7S III. And with a shooting speed of 10 fps, you will easily be able to capture fast sequences.

Boosted Movie Capability As a mid-tier level camera, it is one of the best hybrid options out there. Sony has made some pretty serious advancements to this model which will no doubt have professionals and hobbyists excited. It comes with S-Cinetone™ shooting mode so you can add a pre-filter to capture a cinema-style look while filming. It also offers Creative Look in movie mode to give you different parameters to choose from. The 10bit 4:2:2 colour sampling has a massive colour gamut and a notably larger range than what was built into the a7 III (8bit / 4:2:0). You’ll find it offers a smoother colour gradation and a more vibrant depth of colour. With approximately 15-stops of dynamic range from shadow to highlight the outcome is more tonality. Video allows for 4k up at 60fps or with 7K oversampling you can shoot at 30fps. This camera will also let you record without binning so you don’t lose any details. A key concern for most videographers is overheating. That won’t be a problem here as the new heat sink means you can record for over one hour without experiencing overheating, even at 4K 60p 10 Bit 4:2:2. This can be a real issue for many cameras when recording movies for this long at this quality. Watch our Sony A7 IV review.

Professional Choice for Wildlife and Sport

Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

The EOS R3 camera’s features greatly emphasise superb AF performance and speed with fast-moving subjects. It is designed to meet professionals’ reliability and durability demands, even when working in highly challenging conditions.

Product Features: • • • •

24.1MP Full Frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS Sensor & DIGIC X Processor Up to 8 Stops Coordinated Control IS with In-Body IS Eye Control AF Technology 576 EFV

• • • • •

Advanced subject tracking of humans, animals and motorsports 30fps continuous shooting with electronic shutter Optical Smart Controller 41.5M Dot 3.2” Vari-Angle LCD Dual Card Slots

Delivers 30fps RAW Shooting Speed In electronic shutter mode, the Canon EOS R3 will deliver up to 30fps continuous raw with full AF and AE tracking. Of course, with speed like that, it begs the question, what about rolling shutter? It’s safe to say the combination of stacked sensor and Digic X processor will go a long way to mitigating image warping. The mechanical shutter isn’t lazy either, offering a tidy 12fps. Usually a disaster, or just plain impossible, the electronic shutter mode will support speedlite shooting. Although not the first camera to offer this, it’s still a relatively new advancement and will be new to EOS cameras. Imagine the light show when shooting 30fps at 1/180 with a flash! 1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au

9

Advanced AF Technology with 100% Coverage Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF will offer 100% coverage of the focus area, which is made of 1,053 automatically selected AF zones. When using the multi-controller (AF joystick), there are up to 4779 user-selectable AF point positions available. With that much AF coverage, you’ll be glad to know that the EOS R3 also includes an optical smart controller first seen in the EOS 1DX III. It’s essentially a touchpad built into the AF-ON button that allows photographers to adjust the AF point quickly by moving their thumb across the control. The Canon EOS R3 builds on the already impressive subject-tracking capabilities of the EOS R5 to include cars and motorcycles. Given Canon is an industry leader in deep learning AF tracking algorithms, one can expect the motorsport AF will work extremely well.

Improved Eye Control AF Technology Perhaps the most interesting AF update is the inclusion of Eye Control AF technology. Unique to Canon, this allows photographers to select and change the focus point using their eye through the viewfinder. This is not a new concept; Canon first included Eye Control AF in a select few of their film cameras throughout the 1990s. The feature received mixed reviews and never made the jump across to digital cameras - until now. You will likely have to spend a bit of time getting it calibrated, and Canon notes that certain factors and individual eye characteristics may make it unusable. However, with loads of tech advancements since its initial inception, it will be really interesting to see how this new/old feature performs. Between the touch LCD, multi-controller, smart controller, and Eye Control AF, photographers will have more options than ever when it comes to selecting focus and can therefore choose what works best for them.

Medium Format Mirrorless Camera

Medium Format Benchmark

The GFX 50S Mark II features a 51.4MP sensor that boasts incredible image-resolving power, capturing every detail in sharpness.

Top Features: • • • • •

Compact, portable large format camera body with Bionz XR Processor 51.4MP CMOS sensor (1.7x larger than full frame) 5-axis IBIS offering up to 6.5 stops of stabilisation 19 Film Simulations, including “Nostalgic Neg.” Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function, capable of creating 200MP true color images

Recently, a few of the CameraPro team were lucky enough to get their hands on the new GFX 50S II; Fujifilm’s latest instalment to their GFX line-up. While we each only had a small window of time to play around, we’ve compiled our collective first thoughts to share with you.

Comfortable & Ergonomic Design Reminiscent in both size and weight to a full-frame DSLR, each of the team found it ergonomically on point. The grip is comfortable to hold, the camera feels secure in hand, and vital controls are within reach of your fingertips. Those with larger hands might consider grabbing the additional MHG-GFX S metal handgrip for a smidge more grip length. As a bonus, this will protect the bottom of the camera and provide you with a very useful arca swiss mounting plate! 14

1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au

Outstanding In-Body Image Stabilisation Probably the most appreciated upgrade is the addition of in-body image stabilisation (IBIS). The Fujifilm GFX 50S II’s predecessor was already regarded as an outstanding choice for landscape and studio photographers but the inclusion of IBIS will put this Mk II on the radar of photographers who regularly shoot handheld with longer focal lengths and at lower shutter speeds and ISOs.

Amazing Detail with Very Low Noise With 51.4MP on a sensor that is approximately 1.7x larger than full-frame, it’s hard not to swoon at the resolving detail. These big pixels reproduce loads of tonality with very low noise, and as is always the case with Fujifilm, the colour detail is second to none. If 50MP isn’t enough for you, the GFX 50S II now has multi-shot mode, which utilises pixel shift technology to create a 200MP image reproduction … holy mega storage requirements! Basically, if image quality is your main wish, this camera will have it in droves.

Fast Focus with Capable CDAF Performance When coming from high-end APS-C and full frame cameras, there will be the expectation for a faster and more sophisticated AF system which is not entirely unreasonable at this price point in 2021. But let’s not get this bent out of shape; we all agreed that this will still be one of the fastest focusing medium format cameras on the market and the inclusion of the new X Processor 4 has added a nice little boost to the very capable CDAF performance.

VR Mirrorless Camera Kit

Nikon continues to expand its mirrorless Z mount lineup with a new addition to the vlogging sphere. The sleek and affordable Z 30 has been designed to meet the demands of modern content creators looking to break away from their smartphones and elevate the quality of their photos and video. Housed inside this compact interchangeable lens body is a 20.9MP APS-C sensor and Nikon’s EXPEED 6 image processor. The combination delivers fast shooting speeds up to 11 fps, highly dependable autofocus and excellent low-light performance to ISO 51200.

Small and Lightweight Design The Nikon Z30’s small and lightweight design has not come at the expense of ergonomics or functionality. The body sports a generous grip for comfortable handling as well as a mode dial and two command dials for better manual control. The record button is conveniently positioned for easy access, whether you’re shooting from behind or in front of the camera. Functionality is further enhanced with the fully customisable i-menu, allowing you to assign your most used settings and access them quickly when inspiration hits. And the fully articulating touch screen, with simplified controls, makes it fast and easy to compose your shot no matter your position.

Reliable Autofocus Reliable autofocus is a must for solo content creators, and the highly accurate 209-point hybrid AF system in the Z 30 doesn’t disappoint. The system utilises both phase-detection and contrastdetection AF to grab focus quickly and accurately, even in low light situations. Incorporating Nikon’s subject detection autofocus, the camera easily recognises eyes to lock on to the subject and is even effective in detecting cats and dogs. The small yet powerful Nikon Z 30 can shoot high-quality 4K video at 30 fps with no crop and up to 120fps in full HD for capturing slow motion content. The red tally light on the front of the camera lets you and others know when you are recording, and the continuous record time of up to 125 minutes in full HD is perfect for creating long format tutorials. A selection of 20 filter profiles means that your content can look 1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au

great straight out of camera and be ready for uploading as soon as you’ve wrapped filming, even if you don’t want to play around with post-production. The micro HDMI port on the side can be utilised for high-quality live-streaming or connecting external monitors or recorders for more flexibility when recording. Uninterrupted recording and livestreaming are also possible thanks to the camera’s USB-C connection, which functions as a long-term power supply. A built-in stereo microphone on top of the camera delivers great-sounding audio straight out of camera, and adjustable sensitivity allows you to easily switch frequencies between vocal range or wide range. The vocal range is ideal for piece-to-camera scenarios, while the wide range is a perfect choice when capturing ambient sounds. For even greater audio control, the Z 30 has a 3.5mm stereo mini-pin jack on the side, allowing you to connect an external microphone. If transitioning from capturing photos and video with a phone, you’ll soon appreciate the benefits a larger sensor affords. Most notably is the cleaner image quality captured in low light situations. You’ll also see a more natural-looking focus falloff for pleasing blurry backgrounds and subject isolation compared to your typical smartphone that uses software to simulate shallow depth of field. Sharing content quickly is made super simple with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility with Nikon’s SnapBridge app, available on both iOS and Android. The app enables automatic transfer of photos and video to smartphones and tablets for fast backup. The app can also be used to adjust settings and to start and stop recording when you are not within arm's distance of the camera. Weighing only 405gms with the battery and a memory card, the Z 30 is light enough to take with you anywhere or for handheld recording for long periods. While the Z 30 is primarily aimed at content creators, its compact design and ease of use make it an excellent option for those looking for a highly capable travel camera. And thanks to its small size, the Z 30 can be used virtually anywhere without drawing unwanted attention, a bonus for bloggers and travellers. The interchangeable lens body is compatible with Nikon’s Z mount lenses or its F mount lenses when paired with an FTZ adapter, thus opening up a host of creative opportunities. But if you’re just starting out and want to keep things simple, Nikon has also released the Z 30 in a kit with the super compact 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens, which is impressively sharp throughout the versatile focal range and has in-built image stabilisation. The new Nikon Z 30 is a breeze to use and makes for a great compact vlogging or travel camera. The features in this camera, in tandem with its user-friendly interface, mean that budding creatives can quickly capture and share high-end imagery, leaving more time to focus on storytelling and sharing. Next Generation Mirrorless Camera

Panasonic delivers another standout camera to its much-loved Lumix GH series. The Lumix GH6 continues in the tradition of its predecessors to deliver a video-centric workhorse in the Micro Four Thirds format. At the centre of the GH6 is a brand new 25.2MP sensor, powered by Panasonic’s latest Venus engine. The increased power of the new processor delivers extremely fast readout, which supports high frame rate shooting in electronic burst modes and ensures rolling shutter is well-controlled. When using either manual focus or single-point AF, the GH6 can shoot up to 14 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 75 fps with the electronic shutter. You can get up to 8 shots per second with the mechanical shutter when shooting with continuous AF. If you find yourself needing to shoot at f/1.2 on a super sunny day with no ND filter in sight, you can crank your shutter speed to 1/32,000 sec in electronic shutter mode. Photographers demanding even more resolution will love the High-Resolution mode, which combines multiple shots to deliver an image with even greater detail. With the GH6’s new sensor, this camera can generate a massive 100MP image, the largest for Micro Four Thirds cameras. And thanks to the GH6’s impressive image stabilisation, it’s also possible to capture these highly detailed images handheld. Speaking of stabilisation, for those who enjoy the freedom of shooting handheld, the GH6 incorporates Panasonic’s Dual Image Stabilisation system, which delivers up to 7.5 stops of IBIS when paired with O.I.S lenses. The ability to shoot buttery smooth footage without the need for tripods or gimbals means creatives can work faster, with smaller budgets, and shoot virtually anywhere. The new sensor in the GH6 offers an impressive 13+ stops of dynamic range with Panasonic’s Dynamic Range Boost mode switched on. This mode simultaneously captures an image at low ISO and another at high ISO and combines them into a single exposure with greater information, making it easier than ever to retain highlight and shadow detail in high contrast scenes. Like its predecessors, the video functionality of the GH6 is really where this camera shines. The Lumix GH series has been a favourite among indie filmmakers since its inception, and for good reason. Loaded with pro video features and a tonne of record modes to choose from, the GH6 offers an impressive suite of shooting options for filmmakers. 26

1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au

The video recording modes on offer with the GH6 are too numerous to list. Still, a few highlights sure to excite filmmakers include internal 5.7K 30p video in Apple ProRes 422 HQ and DCI 4K at 60p with 4:2:2 10-bit, thanks to the fan they’ve built into this body, there are no recording limits. The GH6 can shoot 300fps in 10-bit 4:2:0 Full HD to capture super slow-motion. Installation of firmware 2.0 adds the ability to output 5.7K 60p Apple ProRes RAW and Cinema 4K 120p ProRes RAW via HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V+ external recorder. Filmmakers wanting to shoot with anamorphic lenses have the option to shoot 5.8K at 24P or 4.4K at 60P using the full height of the sensor (4:3). In-camera anamorphic shooting modes and desqueeze options make it easier than ever to shoot in this format, and the camera’s IBIS supports shooting anamorphic lenses handheld. With so many different frame rates, codecs and options to choose from, you’ll be happy to know that the GH6 allows you to save your favourite record quality options in your own list that you can easily access with the quick menu. The LUMIX GH6 also comes with a couple of welcome audio surprises. The camera is capable of recording up to four audio channels. Two channels can be recorded via the camera's stereo 3.5mm mic input, and you can get two additional channels with the XLR microphone adapter. On top of the camera is an audio information button that brings up a dedicated audio screen with a single press, allowing you to access your audio information quickly without having to dig through the menu. Panasonic has clearly put a lot of thought into what small production filmmakers need and want from a camera and has managed to accommodate virtually all of them with this body. The GH6 now includes a front record button in addition to the standard record button on the top of the camera. A tally light on the front of the camera is handy for confirming when recording starts and stops. Those who like to use the waveform monitor to keep an eye on exposure will appreciate that the size and position of it on the screen can now be adjusted. The GH6 allows you to use custom luts when recording a log profile so you can look at a graded view while recording log footage. And thanks to the added power of the new processor, you can now punch in to see an enlarged preview allowing you to regularly confirm focus while recording. With the Lumix GH6, Panasonic has crammed a stack of pro features into a Micro Four Thirds camera, offering filmmakers maximum features and functionality in a compact and robust body.

On The Couch

with Damien Bredberg 'I like to give back. I'm very much an open book, and I think the only way our industry can grow is to work together and share wealth and knowledge. Whether that be giving a leg up financially to someone, giving some equipment for free, pre-paying invoices or giving back with knowledge.’ Damien Bredberg is an advertising and commercial photographer who has carved a reputation as one of Australia’s premier image creators with his innovative approach to photographic storytelling. We caught up with Damien on the CameraPro couch, where he talked candidly about how his interest in photography grew, the equipment he uses and his process for bringing his epic creations to life. Damien’s initial interest in photography was in surfing and wave formations. His first cameras were disposable underwater cameras purchased from the local chemist. After photographing his mates in the surf, he would spend $20 he didn’t have on processing and wait 24 hours, only to get back ‘crappy’ photos. But he thoroughly enjoyed the process, and the sub-par results didn’t deter him. While working a casual job at KFC, Damien won a triple pass to Bathurst with all areas access. Figuring a disposable might not cut it, he invested in his first Canon SLR camera. The investment paid off 30

1300 431 431 | camerapro.com.au

because he was offered money for some of his images. Realising photography had the potential to earn him an income, he decided to explore it further. Damien began assisting Stephen Jones, a local wedding and portrait photographer who generously mentored him and shared his wealth of industry knowledge. During this time, Damian received a hands-on learning experience covering everything from meeting clients, studio lighting, medium format photography, colour and black and white printing, and framing.

‘I was very fortunate that Stephen allowed me to make mistakes and to have that hands-on approach.’ Through his time learning with Stephen, Damien realised he enjoyed photography, but that wedding and portraiture were not really for him. He enrolled in a photography course at Toowoomba college, where he built on the skills he had acquired while assisting and was able to

explore other genres of photography. Over the years, Damien has built up a wealth of image creating skills which now sees him in demand across the country. Damien believes his expertise in photography, videography, and drone work has allowed him to step up the level of service he can offer his clients and gives him an edge over other highly talented photographers. In addition to his enviable skill set, Damien focuses on customer service and considers client experience the supreme aspect of a photographic shoot. A big believer in fostering relationships, Damien’s honesty, reliability and enthusiasm have become just as much a part of his brand as his unique photographic style.

‘I kind of consider myself the McDonald/s of photography. I'm not the greatest, and I'm not bad, but I'm confident. I turn up, do a risk-free job, do my best, and everyone's happy every time.’ Damien firmly believes gear doesn’t make you a photographer. He openly admits he doesn’t look after it well, is not phased by what it is, and doesn’t know it in depth. But he clearly knows how to manipulate the tools he has to craft a distinct look and feel. Looking through Damien’s portfolio, it's evident that his style favours wide-angle scenes with great detail. To achieve this, Damien regularly shoots with either the Canon EOS 5DSR or EOS 5D IV body with the EF 11-24mm lens or EF 35mm f1.4L II USM lens. Recently, Damien has begun incorporating mirrorless into his workflow. The natural progression has been the Canon EOS R5 body with the RF 15-35mm lens, which he can use for highend still or motion campaigns. Lighting is a crucial storytelling element in Damien’s style; he relies on Broncolor, sometimes utilising up to a dozen lights on a composite image shoot. He also has a range of DJI drones for video work, including the Inspire 2 and Mavic 3 Cine and several gimbals, including the Ronin S. When asked about his creative process, Damien told us that it all begins with a bottle of red, haunting music, dim lighting and a sketchpad. Although not

sure why this works, he says it puts him in a calm space where he can tap into more profound thoughts and creative ideas. Drawing inspiration from his own emotions and experiences, Damien is probably most regarded for his surreal composite images, where he combines dynamic lighting with exaggerated action to superb effect. His stylised composites are more of a theatrical representation of an idea rather than any single moment in time.

‘I'm fortunate that I've built a style where people know what that style is, and clients come to me, and they'll often say, "I want a Damien Bredberg".' Over the years, CameraPro has had the pleasure of seeing Damien create two conceptual works. He worked with the camera locked off each time. Beginning with a base frame and then introducing new elements, lit and photographed individually. Each new photo was then blended into the original frame, gradually blurring the line between fantasy and reality. By building the image on set, Damien can ensure all story components are working cohesively and that nothing is missed. Drawing on his own positive experience in being mentored, Damien openly welcomes anyone coming through the ranks to join him on set for some hands-on work experience. He has also run workshops and given presentations where he freely shared his process and expertise.
