It is simply impossible to think of classical music in Los Angeles without thinking of Warner Henry. Warner and his wife Carol have been pillars of support for music across the city—leaders for the Los Angeles Opera, Chamber Orchestra, The Colburn School, Da Camera Society, Musica Angelica...the list is endless. And while their generosity is immeasurable, it was always personal for Warner and Carol. They believed in the groups they supported and could be counted upon to be at as many performances as their schedules would permit—their support was meaningful and their beautiful home ever open, always hosting a fundraiser for a worthy arts organization. Warner was a passionate and knowledgable music lover, with a particular fondness for baroque music, and for Mozart and Beethoven. I first met Warner at a house concert when he shared he believed one of Mozart’s most beautiful compositions was his K. 617 Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Viola, Cello & Glass Harmonica, but that he’d never heard it live. “I can fix that,” said I, and so began our friendship and, indeed, also one with a Parisian glass harmonica player. Warner served on Camerata Pacifica’s Board of Directors and was instrumental in our surviving the Great Recession. He also was the reason Camerata Pacifica began performing in downtown Los Angeles. Another conversation with him, this time about Beethoven’s late string quartets, resulted in Camerata Pacifica’s 2-season “Why Beethoven?” project. One had to be careful in a conversation with Warner! Always available, Warner was a sounding board for me. Over lunches, dinners and many, many glasses of Henry-family-produced wine, he would illuminate the wisdom of my ideas or, more often, spotlight its resounding absence! He’d steer the conversation towards my clearest thinking with such gentleness I’d barely notice. I will miss those occasions. Some have a presence so large and reassuring to us we mistake it for permanence, so that their loss, when it comes, is all the more shocking.

Warner’s legacy is assured— a loving family guarantees that—but also for decades his heart was a source that propelled so much music enjoyed across Los Angeles. For those who’ve had a particular performance touch their hearts those notes ring still, never to be dulled. That’s a legacy, and that’s the inextinguishable nature of this wonderful artform. While we have the privilege to be with it, we are its stewards, with a responsibility to hand it to the next generation more than when we received it. Warner certainly has done his part, and we are honored to offer this season of concerts in memory of our dear friend.

Johann Sebastian Bach may well be the seminal figure in classical music. The Well-Tempered Clavier, The St. Matthew Passion, Cello Suites, Brandenburg Concertos, Musical Offering … undisputed musical icons firmly embedded in our culture, which influenced the generations of composers who followed. On this trip, venturing from Leipzig & Berlin, we’ll visit where Bach lived and worked; including Köthen, Dresden, Weimar and Potsdam, exploring his life and the philosophical milieu that informed his compositions. Camerata trips, while packed full of activities, also allow plenty of time for rest, sightseeing and simply enjoying the locales. Adrian Spence founded Camerata Pacifica when he was 25 years old, as The Bach Camerata. Originally a chamber orchestra, its inaugural performance was Bach’s 6 Brandenburg Concertos on December 3rd, 1990 in Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theatre. In 1994 the name changed to Camerata Pacifica and the ensemble launched into a dedicated exploration of the world of chamber music. Over the course of 32 seasons, Camerata Pacifica has developed a loyal following, now presenting resident series in Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Marino and Los Angeles. As an administrator, Spence created a business model to permit the presentation of world-class artists in intimate venues, emphasizing the essence of chamber music. Camerata Pacifica’s artists, drawn from around the world, are selected by Spence not just because they are exceptional musicians, but because their individual characters combine in an eclectic and compelling mix, that is the ensemble’s distinct personality. The musicians’ personality is matched by that of the audience. Over 3 decades, the maxim “treat intelligent people intelligently” has informed an uncompromising approach to programming, enthusiastically embraced by an audience whose intellectual curiosity is evident at every performance. Heritage works are presented in context with less familiar music and newly commissioned works, in a manner welcoming, provocative and, occasionally, challenging — always illuminating the limitless reward provided by the chamber music repertoire. The production of new music is critical to Spence’s mission, with a commissioning

portfolio of 16 works by composers who include; John Harbison, Jake Heggie, Huang Ruo, Lera Auerbach, Bright Sheng, Ian Wilson, David Bruce & John Luther Adams. Currently, another 4 commissions are in process, from Emma-Ruth Richards, Clarice Assad, Libby Larsen & Niloufar Nourbakhsh. In 2020 Spence developed a landmark resource for hospitals entitled The Nightingale Channel. The initiative draws upon Camerata Pacifica’s extensive video library to create curated programming delivered to patient bedsides, offering interest and solace when it can be particularly meaningful. The program launched in 2021 in a collaboration with UCLA Health and is now being shared with hospitals across the country.

Spence comes from Newtownards in County Down, Northern Ireland. He has three children, Erin, Keiran and Kaeli, and is a master-rated skydiver having logged over 1,750 skydives.

The Strad magazine describes cellist Ani Aznavoorian as having “scorchingly committed performances that wring every last drop of emotion out of the music. Her technique is well-nigh immaculate, she has a natural sense of theater, and her tone is astonishingly responsive.” Ms. Aznavoorian has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Finnish Radio Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the Juilliard Orchestra.

ANI AZNAVOORIAN, PRINCIPAL CELLO

Ms. Aznavoorian is an avid chamber musician, and this season marks her 15th year as principal cellist of Camerata Pacifica. She also performs regularly at the Seattle Chamber Music Society and at the Jupiter Chamber Players series in NY, along with numerous other chamber music festivals around the globe. Her many accolades include being the recipient of the prestigious Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award in Tokyo, Japan for her outstanding cello playing and artistry, being named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts upon receiving a medal by President Bill Clinton, and being a prize winner of the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki, Finland. She is a proponent of new music

and she has premiered cello concertos by Lera Auerbach and Ezra Laderman and continues to expand the chamber music repertoire with over two dozen commissions and world premier performances. Teaching is also important to her, and she has served on the distinguished faculty of the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana, and she is often asked to give master classes when she travels to perform. The 2021-22 season includes the release of an upcoming all Armenian cello/piano cd with her pianist sister Marta in conjunction with a promotional tour. Ms. Aznavoorian records for Cedille Records and she proudly performs on a cello made by her father Peter Aznavoorian in Chicago.

Nicholas won the 1980 BBC Young Musician competition, after which he quickly established his career, travelling all over the world, broadcasting widely, making his debut at the Proms, and he has made many critically acclaimed recordings of both new and familiar works. As a soloist he has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, performing a huge range of repertoire and premiering works written especially for him by many

of the world’s greatest composers. He is a founder member of the Britten Sinfonia, the Haffner Wind Ensemble, Orsino, and the Britten Oboe Quartet, and a member of Camerata Pacifica in California. He lives in Cambridgeshire, U.K. with his husband and his cats Cristāl, a British Blue, and Diamond, a Maine Coon. He is Professor at the Trossingen Musikhochschule in Germany, where he guides a class of outstanding young Oboists.

Nicholas Daniel is one of Britain’s best known musicians. He has premiered hundreds of new works for the Oboe and made many critically acclaimed recordings. He is also a successful conductor, including being Music Director of the critically acclaimed Orion Orchestra in London and of Triorca, young musicians from Germany, the UK and Serbia. He was given the Queen’s medal for Music in 2011 and appointed OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2020.

NICHOLAS DANIEL, PRINCIPAL OBOE

The multi-award-winning Spanish clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester is considered one of the finest classical soloists and chamber music artists of his generation. He has been hailed for his “technical wizardry and tireless enthusiasm” (The New York Times), and his “subtle and consummate artistry” (Santa Barbara Independent). The recipient of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2008, and winner of both the Young Concert Artists and Astral Artists auditions, he is a solo artist and chamber musician in great demand. Mr. Franch-Ballester is a recentlyappointed Assistant Professor of Clarinet and Chamber Music at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Mr. Franch-Ballester regularly performs as the Principal Clarinetist at Camerata Pacifica in Santa Barbara, California and appears with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York. As a concerto soloist, he has performed with orchestras such us the BBC Concert Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional of Mexico, I Musici Montreal, and Orquesta of the Radio Television in Spain, among others. He

collaborates regularly with chamber music festivals around the globe such as Music@Menlo, Mainly Mozart, Chamber Music Northwest, Nexus Festival Tokyo, Westport Festival Ireland, Kon-Tiki Festival Norway and the Dresden Music Festival. Born in Moncofa into a family of musicians, Mr. Franch-Ballester graduated from the Joaquin Rodrigo Music Conservatory in Valencia, continuing his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Donald Montanaro and Ricardo Morales. As a recording artist, he has appeared on labels such as Deutsche Gramophon, Harmonie Mundi and Warner Music.

He is a recipient del Gesù on extended loan through the of the inaugural Kovner Fellowship at Stradivari Society of Chicago. Percussionist Ji Hye Jung has been praised as “spectacular” by the Los Angeles Times and “extraordinary” by the Ventura County Star, with the Times further describing her as “a centered player who can give the impression of being very still yet at all places at once.” With percussion repertoire still in its formative stages, Jung feels strongly about collaborating with composers to further the creation of a new voice for the art form. She has commissioned and premiered works by Kevin Puts, Emma O’Halloran, Annika Scolofsky, Bora Yoon, Molly Herron, Christopher Theofanidis, Alehandro Viñao, Lukas Ligeti, Paul Lansky, Jason Treuting, David Bruce, Huang Ruo, and John Serry.

also recorded Stravinsky’s Les Noces with JoAnn Falletta at the Virginia Arts Festival, performed as soloist with David Robertson conducting an all-Messiaen program at Carnegie Hall. Ms Jung made her American concerto debut in 2005 with the Houston Symphony under the baton of Hans Graf.

In 2015, Jung was named Associate Professor of Percussion at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Born in Seoul, Lee began studying violin at age five and within one year won First Prize at the Korea Times Violin Competition. In 1995, she moved to the US to continue her studies under Sonja Foster and in 1997 entered The Juilliard School’s Pre-College. In 2000, Lee was chosen to study with Itzhak Perlman. Lee holds a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School.

Jonathan Moerschel was born in Boston, Massachusetts into a musical family. His mother, a pianist, and his father, a cellist in the Boston Symphony, fostered his early music studies both in piano and violin. At the age of sixteen, he began studying the viola with John Ziarko and chamber music with the violist from the Kolisch Quartet, Eugene Lehner. Moerschel made his Boston Symphony Hall solo debut with the Boston Pops Orchestra directed by Keith Lockhart in 1997 after taking first prize in the Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.

He is the violist of the renowned Calder Quartet, which enjoys a diverse career, playing both the traditional quartet literature as well as partnering with innovative modern composers. The quartet, a recipient of the 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant, has recently premiered new works by John Luther Adams, Andrew Norman, Tristan Perich, Daniel Bjarnason, Aaron Jay Kernis, and David Lang. They have had recent performances at Lincoln Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as London’s Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre and at the Salzburg Festival. They have performed at top halls and festivals across the globe including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Ojai Music

Festival, Melbourne Festival, IRCAM in Paris, Frankfurt Opera, Berkeley’s Cal Performances, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Edinburgh Festival and the Mozarteum. The Quartet’s latest recording of works by Beethoven and Swedish composer, Anders Hillborg, was recently released on the Pentatone label. Moerschel is a Lecturer of Viola and Chamber Music and the Head of Chamber Music at the University of California Santa Barbara. He plays on the “ex-Adam” Gasparo Da Salo viola made in the late 16th Century on generous loan from the Stradivari Society in Chicago.

Pianist Molly Morkoski has performed as soloist and collaborative artist throughout the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, and Japan. In 2007, she made her solo debut in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman stage. Molly has performed in many of the country’s prestigious venues, including Weill and Zankel Halls, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Gardner Museum, the Kimmel Center, Zipper Hall, and the Smithsonian.

An avid chamber musician, she has collaborated with many of today’s leading artists and has performed with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Camerata Pacifica, St. Louis Symphony, Brooklyn Chamber Music S ociet y, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Lark, Chiara, and Momenta Quartets. Ms. Morkoski is a dedicated and enthusiastic proponent of the music of our own time, and has worked closely with many of today’s most distinguished composers, including: John Adams, Louis Andriessen, John Corigliano, David Del Tredici, Mark Grey, John Harbison,Gabriela Lena Frank, Aaron Jay Kernis, David Lang, Magnus Lindberg, Oliver Knussen, David Bruce, Steve Reich, Joan Tower, and Charles Wuorinen. During

the pandemic she built out her vision, SoundScore, an online network of high level artists, who champion some of the most established living composers, and are gathered virtually to work with learning composers the globe over. Molly was a Fulbright Scholar to Paris, where she was an apprentice with the famed Ensemble Intercontemporain. Grammy-nominated violist Melissa Reardon is an internationally renowned performer whose solo and chamber playing spans all musical genres. Melissa is the Artistic Director of the Portland Chamber Music Festival in Portland, ME, Artist in Residence at Bard College and Conservatory and a founding member and the Executive Director of the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO). As a member of the Ensō String Quartet from 20 06 until its final season in 2018, Melissa toured both nationally and internationally, with highlight performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center to name a few. Lauded by Classical Voice for her “elegant” and “virtuosic” performances, the Massachusetts-born musician won first prize at the Washington International Competition, and is the only violist to win top prizes in consecutive HAMS International viola competitions. This season he appears as soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at BBC Proms, Orchestre de chambre de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Hallé Orchestra, and makes his Viennese solo debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus with the Graz Philharmonic. Other highlights this season include recitals and chamber concerts at Wigmore Hall, Wiener Musikverein, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid. Further afield, he embarks on a California tour with Camerata Pacifica, and returns to Japan to perform Bartók’s Viola Concerto at the Hyogo Performing Arts Centre. William Short was appointed Principal Bassoon of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2012. He previously served in the same capacity with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with the Houston Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra. William has performed as soloist with the Vermont and Delaware Symphonies, as well as the New York Classical Players. He is a founding member of the Gotham Wind Quintet and is a regular performer with Camerata Pacifica and Dolce Suono chamber music series. A dedicated teacher, William serves on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Manhat tan S chool of Music, and Temple University, as well as the Verbier Festival and Interlochen Arts Camp. He has presented classes at colleges and conservatories around the country and at conferences of the International Double Reed Society, for which he serves as an officer. WILLIAM SHORT, BASSOON

Jason Uyeyama is Associate Professor of Music and Director of String Studies at La Sierra University, where he teaches violin and chamber music. Bram van Sambeek was the first bassoonist ever to receive the highest Dutch Cultural Award in 30 years: The Dutch Music Prize, handed out to him personally by Minister of Culture Ronald Plasterk in 2009. On this occasion, Bram played the bassoon concerto by Gubaidulina with the Rotterdam Philharmonic and chief conductor Seguin. De Telegraaf newspaper wrote about this performance: “He uses his instrument freely as a mouthpiece, conjures the finest timbres, and is technically capable of doing anything.” In 2011 he won a Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, and he has been admitted to The Chamber Music Society Two programme of New York’s Lincoln Center. Bram van Sambeek performs regularly as a soloist with orchestras such as Sinfonia Rotterdam and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Recently, he played concertos by Villa Lobos, Mozart, Gubaidulina. Many composers, such as Vanessa Lann and Sebastian Fagerlund, have written concertos for him. Last season Bram expanded his soloist activities with many orchestras like The Gothenburg Symphony, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, the Oulu Symphony, the South Netherlands Philharmonic and the Combattimento Consort. He played regularly as a Guest Principal with (among others) the London Symphony Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. As a chamber musician he has worked regularly with Alexei Ogrintchouk,

Jörg Widmann, Reto Bieri, Clara Andradas de la Calle, Hervé Joulain, Radovan Vlatkovich, Liza Ferschtman, Christoph Pregardien, Pekka Kuusisto, Nicolas Altstaedt and Rick Stotijn.
