Second phase of four phase master plan for SBP, a national disaster response organization. St Peter Veterans Housing adds 50 residential units (low income and market rate) to the Treme neighborhood with a strong focus on resilience both in Tenant Occupants and Building Performance. Within the Tenant Occupancy, St Peter is a Resilient Home for Veterans, primarily single mothers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The building is designed to encourage community engagement, which includes a wellness center (for yoga and mediation), a common/ meeting room with kitchenette (for both tenants and the public), and a series of public/private outdoor spaces (for socializing, meditation, and community gardening.) Through Building Performance, St Peter is “Net Zero” through a combination of passive and active strategies. Utilizing highly efficient HVAC systems, lighting controls/fixtures, and appliances, the energy demand to maintain the health and comfort of occupants is minimized. Furthermore, through a partnership between SBP and Entergy, St Peter Residential supports 460 solar panels and a battery capable of producing the same amount of power required to operate the building within a year. Contributions: SBP St Peter was the first project to take on the role of “Project Architect” and lead/coordinate every aspect of the design and development. Along with the “typical” roles of a Project Architect and Project Designer, I took on many of the Project Managment roles. Further more, I worked closely with EDR’s other Sustainability & Building Performance Enablers, in achieving EDR’s and Louisiana’s first Net Zero Multi-Family Building.

St Peter was designed to reflect the surrounding light industrial neighborhood, and create a variety social spaces for tenants. With a series of warehouses, and small Louisiana Style Duplexes, I looked to merge the two building types by combining scale, form and materiality. With a high focus on women veterans, St Peter was designed with a series of “see and be seen” private and public spaces, where tenants can confide with each other and support there internal community. St Peter includes a series of reflective and social spaces, such as a yoga studio and community room for tenant social gatherings and weekly group therapy. In addition to the internal spaces, a variety of exterior spaces include a series of various sized social spaces (front porch, breeze way, primary courtyard), a dog park, community garden, and a meditation courtyard. ENERGY USE INTENSITY | NET ZERO ADJUSTMENTS
In order to achieve Net Zero, we began to run a series of E-Quest Energy models starting with the Enterprise Green Communities established envelope, mechanical, lighting, and appliances. Surprisingly we discovered that the most cost effect and easiest way to implement a lower Energy Use Intensity was through adding intermittent fans and switching to domestic hot water heat pumps. In turn, we were able to reduce the EUI from 30.1 to 16.4 which brought us to a “best case” scenario 213,610 kWh/yr.

Georgia Tech (GT) is in the process of constructing an Eco Commons to restore and embrace portions of the natural Piedmont Forest that once stood before, through a series of landscape and architectural “Green Developments”. The Dalney Building is designed to front and embrace the Eco Commons while expanding on the GT Greenway; essentially replacing surface parking with green space and moving cars into garages (reduces stormwater runoff from surface lots and heat island effect). The Dalney Building is further designed to restore the Piedmont and meet Georgia Tech’s commitment to new WELL Building Design goals by incorporating a Blackwater Treatment Facility, that incorporates a series of indoor/outdoor educational spaces that filter and blur the lines between the Eco Commons, Office Building, and Parking Garage. By incorporating the Blackwater Treament, the Office and Parking Garage split from each other creating a green courtyard that draws in the Eco Commons up and through the primary programmatic spaces, in turn allowing in additional natural lighting and further reducing manufactured lighting loads throughout the day. In considering current market and technological trends, the Dalney Parking Deck has also been designed for future re-use. With Uber/Lift become more frequent, along with the expectation of self-driving cars, it is easy to assume that parking garages and lots will become less cumbersome. By desinging in the ability to convert the parking garage into future office space, we estimate between a 40 to 50% carbon reduction, and quicker build time. Contributions: I contributed in designing, reviewing, and implementing the building envelope and taking the lead for detailing and cost implications. I also ran the day lighting analysis, in helping our team design an effective window wall pattern/percentage. I also took a heavy role in implementing and designing the parking garage, parking entry, and courtyard space. As design “wrapped up” I continued to assist the project architect on design, code review, and coordination. 07

CONNECTION The Dalney building is an office building that has been de-laminated from its neighboring parking deck. a green courtyard separates the two and acts as a connection of the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nature to the large parkscape, ecocommons, planned for south of the project. The office building features panoramic views of the eco-commons, a fourth floor terrace, and highly visible stair to encourage movement.

GROUND FLOOR PROGRAM AND ACCESS The dogtrot offers covered exterior access to the prefunction area and conference room to the east and the blackwater viewing, tanks, and primary office circulaiton to the west. Centrally located to the network of ecocommons paths, the dogtrot allows for ease of access for students and visitors coming from other parts of campus. The parking garage is accessed from greenfield or Dalney Streets. Bike parking is also available adjacent to Dalney Street.

BLACK WATER TREATMENT FACILITY North Georgia water shortages continue to raise costs for Georgia Tech; therfore, an opportunity for a blackwater treatment system to feed the campus chilled water loop became a solution for economics and sustainability. Three arms of smart water use on site: (1) Blackwater Reclamation cleans and reuses building blackwater for reuse in campus HVAC equipment; (2) reclaimed stream bed and neighboring cistern captured stormwater for landscape irrigation; (3) a second cistern under the courtyard and parking deck to collect roof condensate for reuse as grey water (toilet flushing). 08

PROJECT PERFORMANCE The Dalney project is currently tracking Gold on the WELL standard as indicated by the scorecard to the far left. Daylight analysis has been continually run on the design throughout the Design Development phase. Current analysis indicates the design of the facade is allowing for maximum daylight autonomy in the space with minimal high glare areas, as indicated in the diagram to the bottom left. This is achieved through a lower window to wall ratio and a series of fins that allow view but minimize the â&#x20AC;&#x153;hot spotâ&#x20AC;? areas on the floorplate. A flexible interior layout with careful attention to ceiling height and full height partition placement also allows for the daylight to penetrate further in the space.

FACADE PATTERN INSPIRATION Pattern studies for the office building were informed by the Eco-Commons, a future forest like park experience directly south of this building. The horizontal pattern density is derived from the density of foliage seen from the lower to upper tree canopy. Vertical elements on the facade were minimized to emulate the field of relief tree trunks give in the forest.

The Washington Plaza Winery is a junction between Washington Avenue and the surrounding Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sixth Ward occupants. What was once a highly industrial area, artists and entrepreneurs have begun to redevelop the historical avenue into a series of galleries, restaurants, bars, and venues. The WPW is designed to reflect the business and pleasure of the re-developing area. Because of the delicate process of wine development and the social behaviors of the public, two separate per-engineered buildings contain the environment that suits the program. A plaza between the two buildings joins the two programs and acts as a filter to the barrel storage below.

URBAN ECOLOGY LAB | houston, texas UH | 2010 | Prof James Ray The City of Houston, located in the coastal plains, is in a constant state of development. What was once geographically in flux due to the marshes, bayous and tributaries, the city has only heightened and stimulated the change through urban sprawl. The Urban Ecology Lab serves as a public outreach program of a multidisciplinary institute which studies the human and natural effects on changes in the Gulf / Bayou ecosystem. The facility comprises an interrelationship of traditionally separate disciplines: Ecotoxicology, Nutrients, and Coastal Assessment. Each of the three studies maintains their own unique research labs, offices, holding tanks, and artificial fields, which are arranged through a hierarchy of recourse and sequence. Through the form of the building, the angled exterior faรงade allows ample sun light to the artificial fields, as well as assisting in the collection of rain fall into the holding tanks. From within, the skin functions as a filter, in reducing glare and heat gain. Design Process

VERTICAL HYBRID CITY | barcelona, spain Spain-China Architecture Competition | 2011 The Vertical Hybrid City is a response to a neighborhood currently under a definite development, with the introduction of a new building typology: the â&#x20AC;&#x153;hybrid buildingâ&#x20AC;?. This typology challenges the already establish high-rise structure by concentrating services scattered over the entire city into a single building. The VHC creates a container, with different spaces and activities, whose main characteristic is complexity. Inspired by the failed concept of the office building as a juxtaposition of homogeneous floor plans with the aim to economically optimize the land use, VHC contains spaces and programs accumulate with no homogeneity but a connection through public spaces. It is a new space mainly characterized by a diverse functional density, the continuity of the section though public spaces while maintaining the uniqueness presence. This space seeks an interaction between public and private areas and for a bigger relationship with the road infrastructure. Massing

Catalyst Houston is a mixed-use luxury apartment one block from the Houston Astros Minute Maid Park on the north east side of Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Central Business District. Designed to reflect the historical mid-rise structures of the area, while adapting to the modern high rise glass vernacular, Catalyst is merger of low level masonry with metal and glass tower accents. The lower mid-rise podium of the building is designed to reflect the brick and stone masonry of Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old Union Station, now Minute Maid Park, which has become a corner stone of a public sidewalk/street scape re-development. The tower, located and oriented toward the center of downtown, captures uninterrupted views to the historical districts and towers such as the Neils Esperson, J.P. Morgan Chase, and Pennzoil Place.

Contributions: Catalysist allowed me an opportunity to assist the lead project designer and architect on both the interior and exterior development and documentation. I laid out apartment units and assisted in developing the amenity spaces. On the exterior I further developed the massing and materials through documentation and renderings.

The views and amenity spaces of Catalyst are arranged in a vertical hierarchy of public to private. At ground level are the most “public” of amenities such as the conference rooms, wifi lounge, dry cleaning, and mail/parcel rooms. At level 9 are the fitness/yoga, aqua lounge and 20,000 sqft of exterior amenities, such as the pool, activity lawn, and outdoor kitchen. At level 26, a resident lounge with views to downtown and a demo kitchen. On level 28, a ballpark club exclusively for penthouse residents with direct views of the Astros’ home plate.

Located along Speer Blvd in the Golden Triangle of Denver, Parq is at the forefront of Cheery Creek’s redevelopment. As an upscale urban living approach of the “Denver Life Style”, key focuses are on cycling/exercise, health foods, and pets. At street level, public approach is highly encourage with an urban grocer, a coffee shop and restaurant. Along Cherry Creek’s bike path, public air pumps and repair stations are located.

Contributions: My primary responsibilities on Parq were to design, develope, render, document, and coordinate the exterior of the building. Along with the design, I researched “new” materials and methods that our office had not previously used, to further compliment strict city design standards + ordinances, maintain clients targeted net rentable area, and alleviate value engineering. I also worked along with interiors and landscaping to blend indoor and outdoor spaces through the program and material selection.

Within Parq, Amenities are laid out to intertwine functions and spaces while maintaining views to the Rockies. All together, the extensive amenities include: club room, aqua lounge, fitness center, yoga center and lawn, two dog parks with outdoor grill, dog spa, bicycle storage and repair, community room, morning room, wifi lounge, pool with soaking shelf, hot tub, three cabanas and outdoor kitchen.

Diagonally located from the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Camden Conté is a luxury apartment targeted toward young business professionals. Camden Conté will add a mix use node to the center of Houston Central Business District and bring back retail and residents that have been missing for decades. As a “Point Tower” design, the building pulls back away from the street, to allow store fronts, seating and walk ability along Root Square Park. With a central parking garage, a “base” of apartment units and town homes wrap around the north and west facades to soften and scale to the older buildings surrounding the site.

Contributions: Throughout Camden Conte, I worked on multiple tasks, such as laying out program spaces, apartment units and massing development. My largest contribution was developing the exterior, starting at the ground level retail, by creating a textural language that pulls up and through the building in using “local” limestone finishes and rustic metal entry frames. In addition, I worked on renderings, documentation, and coordination.

BRIDGE_HAUS | guadalupe river Personal Design | 2016 PLUMB
“An idea is never conceived in a single sitting, but a stew of unconscious thoughts in need of a single spark, to come together into fruition. To me, Bridge_Haus is an accumulation of my life, starting with my fascination of trains as a little boy, to floating the Guadalupe River year after year, to studying architecture not only as a form or space, but as an extension of the occupant. Architecture which is interactive, and can be re-used and redefined. Bridge_ Haus is more than a home, more than a reusable material, it is my life brought into my passion for design. It is my fruition.” Bridge_Haus is a plan to re-use an abandoned rail line that runs over the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, Texas. Though clichéd with “shipping container homes”, I was inspired by the context and relationship of freight and rail transit. Therefore, a shipping container on a rail line is, after all, in place. Through the increased trend of “Airbnb” vacationing, Bridge_Hause is a place where others, as well as my family, can experience my passion and enjoy the natural beauty of Texas.
