Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats The first exercise was interesting and demonstrated all basics commands of skechtUp. All projects have a context and a client so my clients were Chico and Marshmallow how wanted a new house for two, respecting their sizes. The software was easy and intuitive to deal with, making the “Dog House 1” a fast and funny exercise. Exploring the program content is possible to discover that the program looks likes simple but there is a lot of options to use that could help during projects presentations. One good example of it is “section plan” that provides sections and floor plans in one click. To make this type of representation works, is necessary to paint all inside faces of the wall making a sort of solid hatch. Another important command is inside of “camera” and controls views (perspective, two points perspective and parallel projection). Before exporting images is necessary to check camera view and shadows. At least all the range of components in 3D Warehouse helps putting vegetation, people and animals and also any kind of object or furniture.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats Chico and Marshmallow are back to build a new beach house. More complex than “Dog House 1”, the second dog house is bigger and I used more functions to make the 3D model. At “Dog House 2” components and blocks were the most important functions of the week. To create multiple objects as columns, once I “make a component” if I need to adjust one, all is going to be up to date automatically. I also used layers in the model, the easiest way to control different components, groups and elements is to create layers. With layers defined is easy to adjust, turn on and off and especially before export 2D images is possible to turn off parts that is not necessary to the view. My model worked well during the whole process and SketchUp has an Autosave that is really helpful when the program shut down with a message of “Bug Splat”.

INSPIRATION UK Pavilion, Expo 2015, Milan Italy While I was doing this exercise I remember the Uk Pavilion of Expo that I had the opportunity to visit last year. I conclude this exercise after the week 2. Cubes in orange represent the path that visitors could follow.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats ’27 cubes’ model was good to visualize how 2 points perspective works and helped on hand drawing practice. I wasn’t in class at the first meeting on week 2 so I tried to catch up doing also ‘The Cube Pavilion’. It was an experiment to explore how cubes in array change when put together in a dense context. One important command was ‘array’ that is possible through ‘move’ + ‘ctrl’ and followed by ‘number of repetition’ + ‘x’. Initially I array all cubes without creating a block, but than I realize that was easier to erase cubes that don’t want if they were blocks. My challenge on week 2 was to do the exercise in a delay context. I created a strategy that is to do the work of the current week and than catch up with the delay work.

Changing the floor pattern in the same space makes a room look like different in a sensory way and in a spacial way too.

A way to create different possibilities is to draw a “tile� and think how it is going to be assemble. In these cases above, rotating, copying and changing color of tiles changed the flooring pattern completely.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats During the week 3 exercises I tried to combine hand drawing and Sketch Up model to optimize my work. While I was creating new patterns using the ideal of a tile that repeats in different positions I realize how faster is to think and draw (by hand) what I want first and that go to Sketch Up and reproduce in the 3D model. I didn't have any trouble with the software this week and everything works as I wanted to.

INSPIRATION Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey, Planet Earth Martians came to Earth to get inspiration from ours best samples of architecture. To project the new conference building in Mars the Hagia Sophia building was use as inspiration to create the core of the new building.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats The week 4 exercises were fun and I tried to explore as much as possible the ‘follow me’ command. In the Martians New Conference Building I used ‘free hand’ to create the path for the handrail. To draw with ‘freehand’ I create first a plan in the z axes to use as a base and than ‘follow me’ worked as I expected. In class I had no problem doing a traditional handrail, using ‘divide’ to set the location of the intermediate profiles. I didn’t have trouble with the domes, the only thing that sometimes I needed to do was intersect two geometries to erase part of the dome that was built wrong. I enjoy choosing the ‘style’ of this project. Is great to know that sketchUp give some options to control background colors in a quick way.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats Piazza del Campidoglio was a really interesting exercise. Show the process step-by-step is a powerful tool that can be used to show an architectural concept for example. The challenge of this exercise was to identify all lines an erase it correctly. I finished the 3D model in class and was a fast exercise. To generate the images I made bird’s eye views to show the draw in the floor. I also created elevations to demonstrate the horizontal scale of the place.

The Malevich Pavilion of Art is formed by the Tower of Modern Art, a 10 store tower with walls full of paintings and sculptures.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats Malevich Building was an precious exercise. Looking to a draw and create it as shape in 3D is something really comum in design. The greatest thing about this work was that the painting is formed by simply shapes but once extruded it could became a fabulous building complex. Even if I had tried to create spaces in the pass exercises this one was the one that plan more access and circulations, thinking in a real pavilion. I decided to used similar colors of Malevich painting because I like the idea of having a top view that is really close to the original painting. I struggle to finish the work in the due date. And didn’t have enough time to enrich my model with more details.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats Leaning walls: beauty or beast? During this exercise the class create a group of leaning walls that form a interesting space with shadow and light. I instantly remember the Jewish museum in San Francisco with all these leaning walls forming a contemporary shape inside of the old brick building. One important observation about leaning walls (and this exercise make me think about it) is the requirement of the ADA and California Chapter 11B codes. I had studied a lot these codes in my volunteer work and leaning walls could be a real headache for blind people. In this exercise I saw the possibility of think about the space (even if after the 3D was done) and imagine people using it. The design could be an opportunity to create a great space to everyone. To illustrate what the code request and to prove that my week 07 model has a terrible form, I used the 3D model to do a section showing how leaning walls could be a issue.

The cane will not touch the lowest part of the building without the user hit the leaning wall. The solution used in the Jewish museum was a cane rail installed in the ground leaving the head clearance of 80’’.

WEEK 08
Exploring ‘style’ in SketchUp open a big possibility to present images in different ways. To do this exercise I created a 3D model of the Sather Tower, Berkeley. To create the Sather Tower model I used a dwg (AutoCAD) to make the topography using sandbox tool ‘from contour’. Than I used ‘stamp’ to draw paths, esplanade and the rest of the surrounding and the tower.
I chose this style to represent a first study when the layout need a dark background. Studying styles also made me think about another possibility SketchUp can do for people that work with marketing. And I will try to demonstrate it in the next week exercise.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats In this in class exercise we needed to choose something to explore in the software. I really like to do presentations and think about how to transmit one idea in images and words. During this exercise I explored some styles in SkechtUp and also used ‘sandbox’ for the first time in the class. I took the challenge of doing a volumetric model of the Sather Tower in Berkeley. In that model I used the knowledge acquired in class and explore a new feature. One problem that I had doing the topography was with curves that wasn’t closed, to use the tool ‘from contour’ the curves need to be continue or the topography is not gonna be soft and close to the reality. A good opportunity that I found was to use SketchUp to do 3D for marketing or any type of publicity material, (I want to explore that in the next exercise) so if there is a product or a landscape to be created, instead of drawing everything the 3D could be a good option.

9 Step by step to do spiral stairs. I started with a circle, the number of edges need to be equal to the stairs treads number. Then one tread need to be done completely (make component), than using the circle as reference in the base, I copied and rotated each stair tread. To do the handrail I used ‘follow me’.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats Doing spiral stairs was basically putting almost all of the most used commands of SketchUp together. I liked the exercise and I think it was a good way to remember that SketchUp can do more complex things as easy as the simple shapes. In this exercise I did a little of math to make sure that the treads would reach the right spot and the right high.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats The first half of the semester was really interesting. I feel secure to use SketchUp exploring features I learned in class. I also have the desire to explore new commands and to discover new ways to create and improve final result. I learned a lot about time management and how important is to keep the work up to date every week. A good organization helped me during this first half of the semester and I learned how to control and manage my time to do the best that I could during each exercise. While I was writing this SWOT I remember when Prof. Jerry talks about think graphically and how I used graphic tools to make all exercises. I decided to do a progress chart to illustrate my personal analysis of each points I improved and also to review my work from the beginning of the semester until now.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats This was one of my favorite exercise. When I started doing the paper airplane in class I realized that playing with styles and color in SketchUp is much more than making a 3D looks great. In this week I used just two “simple” softwares (SketchUP and Keynote) to do a study of a website homepage. Normally marketing companies used Adobe softwares as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, and I was surprised with the result of trying to do it using just SketchUp and Keynote. I choose to used flat design concept because, when I was doing the paper airline, I remembered all this new flat design campaigns, using simple forms and colors to transmite an idea. As Mies van der Rohe said: “Less is More”
‘Building’ the Folding Shelter from a square (1’x1’) to a shelter

When I moved to San Francisco and walked in downtown I realize how critical is the situation of all homeless in the street. In this exercise I want to create a folding shelter for homeless in San Francisco, a simple place to sleep and be harm and protect. I thought about the folding shelter as a temporary shelter, it is not suppose to be a permanent habitation. I started the study searching for origami that could have a shape similar to a camping tent but easier to fold.

The chosen fabric to the folding shelter was a breathable, water and wind proof, in deformable and autodefroissable. This fabric is used for polar jackets and hiways security outfit. The structure of the shelter is similar to a camping tent and foldable as well. The inside material is a reflective fabric to help on the isolation system. To have a complete shelter users need also a insolation mat and a sleeping bag, everything can be fit in a camping bag.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats This week I was excited about folding and how a lot of interesting shapes can be done starting from a simple piece of paper. On the folding shelter I discover a way to ‘explode’ the model and show what is going on inside of it. I used the dimension tool, and on this model was good to have general dimensions showing how big is the shelter. That exercise inspire me to think more about ‘folding’ as a tool to create different and unexpected spaces.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats This week was to practice folding using SketchUp. I upload my portfolio super late even if I had my 3D model done. I discover the ‘3D printing color’ and I started to think about the possibilities of these textures. The exercise was simple but I like to think that everything in life is an opportunity to extract something and do something better. That’s why I decided to create a fake hand make model, using SketchUp and taking photos of my hands. I used white background in the model and I cut my photo’s background to make the images. I loved the result and I had fun doing it.

I did a story board showing (in a very raw way) that is possible to use sandbox not only for landscape, but also to design buildings. I used intersection to cut the “mountains” and I applied a metal texture to the building. My inspiration was Frank Gehry’s architecture and my desire to slide in their roofs. I would like to try to design organic architecture in sketchUp, but I now that the software is not so precise.

During this exercise I had many ideas while I was measuring the apartment. I tried to incorporate my initial ideas as part of the first half. In one plan I put in red all furniture that I want to replace or rearrange, in this way I could see what itens I really like (or are really useful) and all the other pieces that I think should be replaced. Although I end up changing more itens than I was expecting. I change the leaving room to be more welcoming, the table place to study in the living room wasn’t necessary and I preferred to have more space to store books in the new tv stand and storage unit. This exercise involved all sketchUp commands and I’m really happy with the result. It could be a real project and I think is good enough to show to a client as a first study.
