ALLEGHEN Y LINE Pittsburgh, PA Instructor: Jared Abrahams & Vicky Achani Partner: Charlie Hymowitz Year: 2023

01 4

This project spans three distinct sites, each designed to not only enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal but also foster a sense of environmental responsibility and communal well-being. A reimagined rail line weaves through these three sites, acting as the connective thread that ties the urban fabric together. Efficient and sustainable, the rail line facilitates easy access between the agricultural community, waterfront housing units, and the downtown gateway station.

At the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, the Gateway Station undergoes a thoughtful redesign, becoming a central hub that seamlessly integrates with the city’s reimagined rail line. Constructed using crosslaminated timber, the station reflects a commitment to sustainable architecture. This hub serves as a dynamic transportation nexus, connecting various neighborhoods and promoting a greener, more efficient public transit system. The redesigned Gateway Station symbolizes the city’s dedication to embracing the future while preserving its rich history.

CULINARY INST I TUT E Frick Park, Pittsburgh, PA Instructor: Elijah Hughes Partner: Zoe Liu Year: 2022

02 18

Located on a popular sledding hill within the expanse of Pittsburgh’s woodland park: Frick Park, this culinary institute was designed for the community in mind. It sits on the far corner of the site in order to have interaction with park users using the Riverview trail or enjoying the famous Blue Slide Park. It invites the public coming from the main boulevard where the entrance is located. Along with teaching kitchens and classrooms, the culinary institute’s upper level is open to the public to enjoy a cafe run by it’s students which has peaceful views to the east of the woodlands.

FIELD STUDY

20

Our Field Drawing composition is inspired by the Bodhi tree, the spiritual representation of Buddhism and uses elements from the precedent: the longhouse and Pueblo Bonito. We then created a modeling strategy to emphasize weight and hierarchy.

PROGRAMMING There are many factors to consider for this site including its adjacent streets and paths, and the steep slope it sits on. To program accordingly, we have the areas frequently used by the public accessible from the main street and the classrooms and offices on the lower level overlooking the paths and forest.

CEN T ER FOR FABRIC East Liberty, Pittsburgh, PA Instructor: Stefani Danes Year: 2023

03 26

This International Fabric Arts Design Center was designed to be dedicated to the creation, study, and exhibition of contemporary works in cloth and fiber. Through researching the techniques of sewing and dyeing, I was able to program the building based on the practical, connective, and process-driven type of art it revolves around. Through understanding the process of designing I hope that these workspaces could contribute to the process of artistic production. This center is meant to be a new landmark for the area of East Liberty and a place to congregate and come together for the shared experience of fabric art.

ORGANIZATION

30

Order and clarity became a theme for this project. Having three facades opened many opportunities for views and daylight.

The first floor is completely open to public with glass curtain walls revealing the gallery and lecture space. Above, the studios are stacked facing the bustling boulevard of Penn Ave while the offices and private studios face the back road (Kirkwood St).
