Welcome Roots illustrates the origins behind Bernat Klein’s creations. The pages that follow explore the designer’s unique relationship with nature in the Scottish Borders and celebrates his innovative use of colour and texture. Using imagery that adopts Klein’s painterly style and radiant colour choices, this book reimagines the Border’s everyday surroundings as if they were seen through the eyes of the designer himself. Although an immigrant from Serbia, the nature rich backdrop to Klein’s home in Selkirk became a vivid pool of inspiration and is what kept him rooted in Scotland until his death
in 2014. From the rolling hills and open countryside, to the historic ruins and golden coastlines of the east, these landscapes and their characteristics continue to define this region today. This publication honours the variety of wildlife home to these environments, reminding readers of Scotland’s innate beauty. Bernat Klein 6. November 1922 – 17. April 2014 Bernat Klein is a renowned textile designer, colourist, artist and industrialist. His legacy is defined by his innovative ideas on design and colour.

Bernat Klein was known for his innovative use of colour, textile designs and paintings, but it is his relationship with Scottish nature that shone through his creations. Roots has demonstrated that looking at nature more openly can lead to the development of a person’s own creativity and is a good reminder not to ignore the seemingly small and insignificant things around us. It is easy to take for granted our surrounding environments and to forget that inspiration lies close to home.
