EXHIBITION PROPOSAL
Final Artefact BMD2R4 Special topic, tearm 2
prepare by : Camilo Beltran
There's one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate.
introduction Global population growth adds pressure to limited resources such as water, energy, food, open space and wilderness, transport infrastructure, schooling, and has a big impact on climate change. By using Design fiction, Hyphen wants to challenge people to think differently about how we currently use nature’s limited resources and inspire people to take action.
concept proposal Looking into the lives of our future population.
Hyphen is an art exhibition that uses VR Technology to tell a narrative while visualising what the future could potentially look like. The project helps the audience experience a dystopian future with the hope of getting attention to raise awareness to adopt sustainable lifestyles while there is time.
Location Shed 10 is the ideal location for this exhibition. The place is spacious, raw, and has an industrial feel that can help evoke stronger emotions due to its distressed elements, exposed pipes, and concrete features, increasing the experience of the dystopian future.
Exhibition Structure The exhibition was structured and designed to resemble a time travel machine, while the darkroom contributes the feeling of a dystopian theme. In addition, a waiting and timing strategy has been developed to create a sense of anticipation and improve the experience amongst attendees.

the Narrative Letter from the future The year 2080, the beautiful planet we all love, is nothing more than a nostalgic memory that most people remember with sorrow realising how extraordinary life used to be. A long time ago, our green forests were replaced with a jungle of concrete and technology, which we now call intelligent cities. These cities were created with one goal in mind to solve our past issues, creating housing, space and improving the lifestyles of our neverending growing population. But, unfortunately, what was supposed to be a utopian future quickly turned into humanity’s biggest nightmare due to all the damage we created, with global warming spiralling out of control and after destroying almost all our nature to exploit our natural resources. Our atmosphere warmed up to a point where carbon dioxide reacted to the increasing temperatures by breaking down, making photosynthesis impossible. The small remnants of vegetation that were left died from the lack of carbon dioxide, and with them, our oxygen supply became very scarce. Architects and scientists from the governments managed to find a temporary solution that they called Rise-X. They created elevated districts above all the cities to access the best oxygen left, high up in the sky. Unfortunately, this project was costly and had limitations around the number of people it could accommodate, driving up the construction price that only the most wealthy or influential people could afford to access them, exacerbating the gap between the rich and poor. As a result, a company known as OX-8 developed a technique to create artificial oxygen for people who couldn’t afford the Rise-X project, monopolising the oxygen availability meaning humans were highly dependent on this product and couldn’t do anything without OX-8. OX-8 quickly became the most wealthy company selling artificial oxygen to the not so fortunate. However, all of this is just a temporary solution, and all life on Earth is about to disappear. This is why, I’m sending this message from the future, hoping someone from the past would find it, and if you are reading this and if you can take a deep breath in, it is not too late to change the path of humanity.
