PRESIDENT’S REPORT – SEASON 2019/2020

Well, what a strange last few months it has been and at the start of the season who on earth could’ve predicted the season to finish due to COVID-19? Would’ve got great odds for that! The correct decision to call off all finals was made for all players and officials health, but it’s very unfortunate many of our sides didn’t get a chance to progress and have the opportunity to win the ultimate prize. With our Second, Third and Fourth Men’s teams, Women’s Second Grade and three junior teams (both U/14’s and U/16 white’s) all having a chance in finals, it was a disappointing way to finish the year. Fortunately, we had the U/17’s go back to back earlier in the season and the U/16 Whites were crowned Premiers after finishing top. Two great achievements to celebrate, showing we have strong depth coming through our junior program. Our Women’s B Grade finished second in both their competitions, so that shows they are improving. Graham Sedunary has continued his great work with our women’s teams and I have pleasure in announcing we will have a 1st Grade team in the SACA Women’s Premier Competition. A lot of hard work has gone into this by many people around the club and we have finally been rewarded with a spot, but now harder work starts to make sure we can put a competitive team out on the park. We now have a complete pathway to the elite level for the women’s program as we do for the men’s teams, so we look forward to producing some state and WBBL players in the future. Thanks for your efforts this season Graham and this is a reward for many years of hard work. Throughout the year we had many outstanding achievements to celebrate and although he didn’t pull on the yellow and black cap this year due to his heavy workload playing higher honours, Alex Carey again had a wonderful season representing the country at the highest level in International T20’s and ODI’s, as well as the Strikers and Redbacks.

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Chadd Sayers also continued his long career representing the state at first class level and we saw our young NSW recruit Liam Scott, make his first-class debut for the Redbacks in Perth after a great start to the season. Liam was also named the Jason Gillespie Medallist for the SACA Male Rising Star and represented Australia in the U/19 World Cup in Australia. Certainly, a wonderful start by Liam to his cricket career in SA and we hope it continues to prosper to higher honours. Liam Scott was also part of the Redbacks U/19 squad which also included Will Bowering and Josh Hoffmann with Isaac Higgins and Zac McCabe representing the state U/17’s, with all representatives doing the club very proud. Isaac and Zac along with Oliver Wilkinson, were also part of our U/17 Premiership Team and recognised in the U/17 Shield Team of the Year. Anesu Mushangwe received the Lyn Fullston medal for the most outstanding player in the Women’s B Grade and Ben Sedunary won the Wilson/McLeod Medal for the best Men’s D Grade player. We had several other individual winners across the grades and congratulate all of those trophy winners. I would like to thank club coach Grant Francis, A Grade coach Peter Muggleton and A Grade assistant coach John Douvlos for their efforts throughout the year. Both Peter and John will not be continuing in their roles next year but have been great servants over many years and more importantly, great people to GDCC. John particularly has almost been part of the furniture, around the club since a junior, progressed through to seniors, played 1st Grade, captained and finally went into coaching. A great friend to many people who is now taking an opportunity at another club. We wish both John and Peter all the best with their future endeavours and hope to still see them around the place. Thanks to the other assistant coaches Matthew Heffernan, Nathan Schollar and Jake Winter in his non-playing role, plus a special thanks to Peter Gladigau with not only his assistant coaching role but also organising equipment, balls, liaising with the curator etc. etc……. Congratulations and thanks to James Greenwell, Junior Co-ordinator Mark Hofmeyer, successful U/17’s coach Ben Higgins and all the junior coaches on another successful season.

I’d like to make special thanks to long serving board member and club great Paul Forster, who has stepped down from his role of Chairman of the Match Committee after many years. We thank Paul for his tireless efforts over the years in a challenging role and for his time on the board. Special thanks to Paul Angley and Cheryl Cook in their respective roles as Secretary and Treasurer, I can say two of the best in the business. Thanks to Bob Snewin for representing us up at SACA in his roles which I know has its moments dealing with all the other clubs, as well as running the Sponsorship and Fundraising team, who again did a great job. Thanks to David Boschma for his efforts and support looking after many odd jobs and maintenance issues. Ashley Capp did another stellar job running the bar and thanks for all those that helped out, as well as all the other volunteers performing roles that make this great club what it is. I’d especially like to thank the COHB with their support for the Glenelg Oval precinct helping with the funding for our nets, site screens and upgrades to change rooms and WTCC for their assistance with the newly renovated Camden Oval. Thank you to all members of the board for their support throughout the year and playing their role. A challenging one, particularly the second half with issues like our club review, some financial

uncertainty around effects of COVID-19 and getting our Women’s 1st team over the line, to name just a few. To all our sponsors, with special mention to our major ones in Fotobase, Search Mortgages and Gliderol, thank you for your financial support again and we look forward to continuing our strong relationships in the future. You can’t control what you can’t control, but you can control your reaction to it. I ‘m confident the club is in a good place going forward despite some of the issues we face being out of our control. We will continue to try and build this great club to be the central cricketing hub of the area, put it in the best position we can off the field, to help us be successful on the field. We have many exciting things to look forward to in the coming season with our new Women’s First Grade team, new practice nets, a new redeveloped Camden Oval, upgrades to existing and new unisex changerooms, new site screens, new women’s recruits and new additions to our senior coaching group! Thank you all for your efforts this last season and we have a lot to get excited about looking towards a successful 2020/21 season! Jarret Moyse President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

As will be mentioned in other reports the 2019/2020 was different and the ending not something that anyone could have predicted in October 2019. COVID truncated a season which had so much promise for the club. Often teams reflect on missed opportunities when they finish 5th, however this year the only way to achieve the ultimate success was to finish top and even then there would be a sense of something not complete in being awarded the premiership. The club fielded 11 teams in the main competitions, 8 men’s and 3 women’s’. When the season was cancelled 7 of the 11 teams were to play finals. Unfortunately the U16W were the only ones to be in the number one position at the end of the season. I think many of the 7 teams had a really good chance to take the ultimate title. One competition that was completed was the U17 shield side where Glenelg went back to back. With finals cancelled, a measure of our success was the number of individual SACA award winners: SACA Premier Cricket Rising Star - Jason Gillespie Medal - Liam Scott SACA 2nd Grade Women’s Lyn Fullston Medal Anesu Mushangwe SACA 4th Grade Men’s McLeod/Wilson Medal – Ben Sedunary 2nd Grade Mens Bowling - Marcus Lee 2nd Grade Womens Bowling - Anesu Mushangwe 3rd Grade Mens Batting - Steven Heatley 4th Grade Mens Batting - Scott Applegarth U17 Team of the year Isaac Higgins (captain) Oliver Wilkinson Zac McCabe U 16 Red Bowling - Jess Arthur U16 White Batting William Trevena

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

A major success this year was the growth of women’s cricket at the club, with Glenelg fielding a team in both the SACA 2nd Grade competition and 2 teams in the ATCA 1st Grade competition. The women’s 2nd Grade played in the grand final of the T20 competition and then finished 2nd in the one day competition with the finals cancelled. I am sure they would have performed well with the young side having learnt from their loss and experience in the T20 final. Of course all of this was overshadowed by the admission of Glenelg women’s to 1st Grade in 2020/21. It has been a long journey and many people have been involved however Graham Sedunary and Cheryl have been the two major drivers and strongly supported by Jarret Moyse and David Boschma in recent times. Grant Francis is in his third year as the club coaching director and has had a significant impact on the players and culture of the club as is reflected in the solid performance of all grades and finishing 4th in the club championship. Grant was well supported by the match committee chairman Paul Forster and Grant’s coaching staff Peter Muggleton, Peter Gladigau, Nathan Scholar and Matthew Heffernan. The City of Holdfast Bay Council once again supported the club, continuing the development of our grounds and facilities. The recently approved sightscreen rails will overcome a potential hazard and make the erection and dismantling far easier. The council has also approved to upgrade the toilet and shower facilities to ensure they are female friendly and these works should be completed by early in the season. In respect of the club’s administration, I was a little more comfortable in my second year however once again having the support of David Boschma as assistant secretary and being able to call on Alan for advice and support has made it easier. The Board and the many other volunteers at the club are also key factors in me being able to fulfil my role. President Jarret Moyse has shown exceptional leadership in a very difficult environment with COVID and a number of matters and situations that have arisen. Cheryl Cook has been amazing and is a fountain of knowledge, she not only does a wonderful job as Treasurer, but also does so much work with women’s cricket in general and the Glenelg Cricket Club, I am not sure where she finds the time to be involved in so many cricket activities. Mark Hofmeyer took over as Junior Coordinator and whilst in a fast learning curve has been extremely professional

in the way he has gone about his role and has been a valuable contributor on the Board. jobs behind the scenes including working at the bar. Bob Snewin the club delegate on the Premier Cricket committee, Chair of the Sponsorship committee, Bob just gives and gives often carefully managing his way through conflicts at Premier Cricket Committee and his role in sponsorship has never been so important for the financial stability of the club and Ashley Capp who gives so much time and is so passionate about club in the way he supports the club with the bar, club hire management and many social activities.

Getting players on to the ground for matches requires many volunteers working in the background, so we are always looking for help with team managers, scoreboard attendants, building maintenance skills, afternoon teas etc. This is always an ongoing challenge to maintain our club as one of the leaders in Premier Cricket. So please keep eyes and ears open for potential volunteers for our club. Thank you to all our 2019/2020 volunteers and we hope you continue next season.

competitive on the field and makes his opinions known and has contributed enormously to the Board in recent times, but whether it be during his playing, coaching or administrative days once he has a beer in the hand he is a great person to have a conversation with. However, the club does not run by the Board alone and there are so many other key people that are the life blood of the club who need to be thanked and who make this club great. In particular, I would like to mention the following and thank them for their support: Peter Gladigau (Cricket Operations Manager) with a modified role in 2019/2020. Peter’s efforts in ground allocations, collaboration with David Wark (Council’s oval curator at Glenelg) has been excellent. The other major unsung supporters and helpers I would like to mention are Alan Scholz, Barb and John Laing and David Angove, along with the other people I have mentioned previously, I am extremely grateful for your support and help, thank you.

TREASURERS REPORT

Outside grants and donations have been a good source of income. We sincerely thank The City of Holdfast Bay and SACA for their continued support with funding of our facilities and their upkeep. The club continued to provide exceptional facilities playing conditions for the players. The fundraising and sponsorship committee have again done a great job as always, led capably by Bob Snewin. The bar and catering is a good source of income. Thanks to Ashley Capp for doing all the hard work with managing the facilities.

I am pleased to report on the finances of Glenelg District Cricket Club for the year ended 30th June 2020. During the 2019/2020 financial year GDCC made a profit of $34,648 after deducting depreciation of $14801. In effect the club made cash profit of $49449. This is an Increase from the previous year of $18771. Although the profit has increased we have received grants to replace the practice nets. The nets are on order & partly paid for. The expenditure on the nets will show as a depreciation item.

Thank you, Dave Angove for your invaluable assistance. Dave does the banking & reconciling perfectly. Thank you to the finance sub- committee of James Muir, Ashley Capp & Brian McFadyen. COVD 19 is causing a lot of unknown with financial as well as other club matters. The finance committee has set realistic budgets while keeping subs at a manageable level. We feel that we will survive the pandemic with good management. The club has been able to service its debts and meet all of its financial obligations throughout the financial year. Cheryl Cook Hon. CLUB COACH’S REPORT

We welcomed Liam Scott to the club who made an immediate impact in his First Grade debut scoring a hundred. Liam made the decision to move to South Australia from New South Wales to pursue first class opportunities and he was rewarded with selection for South Australia in the Redbacks against Western Australia, as well as Australia in the Under 19 World Cup and captained the SA Under 19’s in the national carnival. Isaac Higgins made his First Grade debut in round 4 and represented South Australia in the Under 17 national carnival. After an outstanding carnival he was selected to represent a Cricket Australia 17 X1 at the Under 19 national carnival.

The 2019/2020 season produced a season of mixed fortunes for our 4 senior grades where we were in the mix but unable to walk away with any team trophies, however there were some great individual high-points. We finished 4th in the club championships up from 5th. The unprecedented scenario we faced with COVID-19 meant the season came to a halt in unusual circumstances with three of our teams semi-final bound. It also showed what a privilege it is to be able to play and coach the game. Once again we saw the benefits of investing in the development of our players, allowing for the continued growth and depth of our playing group. It is always pleasing to see from a coaching and club perspective the number of lads who have come through our junior program and then progress into First Grade players.

After having to grind away for a number of seasons Riki Boschma found the consistency we were after. After playing Third Grade in round 1, he thoroughly deserved his First Grade selection. Our Second Grade was led by Trent Carter who came back after a few seasons away due to work. Trent showed great leadership and his consistent batting and wicket keeping saw him play some First Grade. When Trent was unavailable Will Forster took over the captaincy and continued to grow his leadership qualities. We made the semi-finals in the two day format and finished runner up in the 20/20 competition. It was pleasing to see the playing group at this level putting pressure on the First Grade.

The First Grade had an inconsistent year across all three formats. When we played at our best we were one of the top teams. For most part of the season we would be in a competitive position in games but were unable to keep the pressure on and the opposition would walk away with the win. We finished 7th in the two day format with 5 wins, 5 losses and 2 draws which sums up our season. In the one day format we finished a game out of the finals and in the 20/20 format we finished 2 games out.

The Third Grade was well led by Tom Worthington finishing 2nd in the two day format. Steven Heatley captained the 20/20 side and a loss in the first round eventually meant we finished 5th.

We were fortunate to have Chadd Sayers available for some games when his first class commitments allowed. His leadership, experience and competitive nature have a positive impact across our playing group.

Under the guidance of Paul Forster we were able to once again assemble a strong coaching group.

Alex Carey is now a permanent fixture in the Australian one day and T20 sides so we don’t see him much, however it is great for not only Alex but the club to have an Australian representative amongst us.

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Scott Applegarth once again captained the 4th Grade and was supported by Brett Connor and Kai Boschma eventually finishing 3rd in the 2 day competition. They finished top after the minor round of the 20/20 competition, however lost the semi-final.

Peter Muggleton and John Douvlos were in charge of the First Grade. Their knowledge and input over a number of seasons was invaluable to the whole playing group and they have left the club and playing group in a strong on field position. Mugs and Douv you are welcome into the change rooms anytime.

15

Nathan Schollar came on board as a batting coach with a specific group of players, a number these lads played in higher grades which is a tribute to Nathan’s experience and coaching philosophy. Peter Gladigau and Matt Heffernan were our bowling and fielding specialists with Peter working with a number of our younger bowlers. Our fielding continued at a high standard due to Matt’s energy and accountability on the players. Tom Worthington assisted with the development group while also captaining the 3rd Grade which allowed the coaching group to receive feedback on the development of players in game situations. The foundation of a club is its volunteers and we are fortunate enough to have a band of volunteers who put in a tireless amount of work. To all of you thank you for the time and commitment you undertake to do the duties you do. We are certainly are the envy of all clubs. To our sponsors thank you for your support once again. We are currently in uncertain economic times and the financial support you provide allows the club to have some financial stability. I would also like to thank the City of Holdfast Bay and especially Mayor Amanda Wilson and David Wark for continually supporting the club to improve our facilities through funding opportunities and David’s work on the oval and surrounds. Our Board of Management led by President Jarret Moyse ensure we have financial security in these challenges times, while also leading and establishing the clubs strategic directions and club charter. A big thanks to all of you for the way you undertake your roles which encompasses but not limited to, sponsorship, grants, events, upgrades etc. The juniors once again under the guidance of James Greenwell had another successful season, while continuing to develop future senior players. An integral role of the program is to provide opportunities to players from our South East zone which continues to occur. Congratulations on back to back Under 17 shield trophies and the other premierships you achieved. It was great to see us have representation in the Under 17 Team of the year with Isaac Higgins (captain) along with Oliver Wilkinson, Zac McCabe.

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Mark Hofmeyer took on the Junior Coordinator role and along with James provided a great link between the juniors and seniors. The junior structure also included Ben Higgins, Matthew Chapman, Tim Hoffman and Tim Dyer who provided a wealth of cricket knowledge and experience to our young players. Our women’s program goes from strength to strength due to the tireless efforts of Graeme Sedunary. Graeme was supported by a working group and he was able to increase playing numbers while also developing the players skill set. This is reflected in some of the women selected in South Australia junior representative sides. Congratulations to Sam McNally on his recent appointment as First Grade coach, the coaching group look forward to working and supporting Sam in the 2020/21 season. To the players thank you for the time and commitment you put in to making yourselves and the club better. You buy into the clubs philosophy of developing our own and selection is not easy at times. We have healthy numbers in our playing list with a number of players missing selection each round however it is a testament that those players keep coming back and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Congratulations to Liam Scott, Marcus Lee, Steven Heatley, Scott Applegarth and Ben Sedunary on your respective SACA awards, great reward for your hard work and consistent seasons. Lastly, on behalf of my mum Pauline, Lianne, Elissa and Harrison I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Glenelg District Cricket Club community for the support you provided us when my dad Adrian passed away just prior to the season commencing. He loved watching the home games and got great satisfaction out of both individual and team performances. Can’t wait for season 2020/21 to start. Grant Francis Club Coach

1ST GRADE PLAYER’S REPORT

runs to finish in 7th position on the Premier Cricket ladder. Our One Day cup campaign, which all games counted for 2 day Premier Cricket points as well, was a roller coaster. As alluded to previously, a thumping win against Tea Tree Gully was accompanied with 2 other victories against Prospect and Sturt, however defeats to Southern Districts and Adelaide University meant that we finished 5th and a game outside of 4th position to play finals cricket in the One Day competition.

After finishing agonisingly short of finals action in 2018/19, the 1st Grade came into this season with fresh optimism and confidence that we could take that next step and make the top 4. The core of the team remained largely unchanged however we knew our batting depth would be tested with the retirements of club leading 1st Grade run scorer Tom Plant along with 1st Grade stalwart Nathan Schollar, as well as an untimely injury to last season’s record breaking run machine Jake Winter which would eventually rule him out for the entire season. To fill these roles, we recruited Australian U/19 representative Liam Scott from New South Wales to add to our group in both batting and bowling departments, as well as the return of English overseas player George Hankins after 2 previously successful stays with the club. We began the season strongly with an away win to notorious powerhouse Tea Tree Gully, where Liam Scott on debut dominated with 115 and 2 wickets leading the way and showing us the star talent we had recruited. Unfortunately, an early batting collapse of 6/60 led to our demise against Southern Districts, which was followed up with a rain-affected draw against West Torrens in our first 2 day game of the season. Consecutive victories against Prospect and Adelaide was soured by a loss to East Torrens but we headed into the Christmas break 1 game outside of the finals race. After meeting and going down to a high-quality Adelaide University side after Christmas, we had an amazing last over victory against Sturt with skipper Chadd Sayers coming to the rescue with an impressive 73* to guide us to victory. From here, we unfortunately didn’t play our best cricket the remainder of the season to have a draw (albeit rain-affected) against Port Adelaide and backto-back losses to Woodville and eventual premiers Kensington to all but end our chances of playing finals cricket. However, we did finish the season in impressive fashion, beating Northern Districts by a whopping 228

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Historically, we have fielded an extremely strong T20 side however, as was the case with the one and two day competition, we were slightly off the pace this season. A first round loss to Prospect was a big wake up call, but we responded well with a 68 run victory against Northern Districts in Round 2. Defeats immediately following the Christmas break to Sturt, Kensington and Tea Tree Gully all but ended our hopes for T20 success, albeit having a consolatory win against Woodville in the last game to restore some pride. Whilst there are no doubts the 1st Grade underachieved this season, there remained highlights which shows promising signs for the years to come. We had 3 debutants in Liam Scott, Isaac Higgins and Riki Boschma, who all showed they are good enough to succeed at 1st Grade level. We also had three significant 1st Grade playing milestones with returning 2012/13 premiership player Trent Carter and fast bowler Jack Pudney playing their 50th 1 Grade games respectively for the club. We also had Ben Bullimore play his 100th 1st Grade game to become our newest life member at the club. Well done all on those achievements! Outside of club cricket and we had great representation at national carnivals. Isaac Higgins had an outstanding U/17 carnival to be the leading run scorer of the carnival (425 at 85) and earn a spot in the Cricket Australia XI which competed at the U/19 championships, where Liam Scott, Will Bowering and Josh Hoffmann represented South Australia at the same time. Whilst all the boys went well, special mention must go to our leg spinning guru Will who led the carnival for wickets (18 at 12.83). Continuing on and congratulations must go to Liam Scott who represented Australia at the U/19 World Cup in South Africa in February: a massive achievement! Liam also made his Sheffield Shield debut against Western Australia at the WACA prior Western

away the Jason Gillespie medal for the best young player in the Premier Cricket competition. Well done Scotty! Congratulations must also be extended to our club captain Chaddy for taking his 300th First Class wicket for the Redbacks, amazing efforts Chaddy! Lastly, we’re so pleased to see Alex Carey continuing to dominate wherever he has played over the last 12 months and to be in a leadership position in the white ball formats for Australia is something we are proud of as well as something to aspire to. Well done Kez and keep dominating!

the scenes and leading the entire senior playing group. Our superb scorer Gary Kuchta continues to do an amazing job with the numbers in the scorebook and thanks as well to Deb Schollar here for assisting when Gary was unable to on one occasion this year. Many thanks to the kitchen staff led by Jenny Bullimore as our afternoon teas continue to be the best in the business! Lastly, thank you to all the volunteers who perform great service to our club out of the love of their heart, as well as the sponsors who enable both the playing group and the club to improve with financial backing.

On behalf of the 1st Grade, I would like to once again thank Peter Muggleton and John Douvlos as 1st Grade coaches for their continued efforts and dedication towards us as a group. Club coach Grant Francis must also be applauded for the tireless work he does behind

Thank you once again and here’s hoping season 202021 will be our best to date and can get back into the finals mix.

2ND GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Season 2019/2020 was a successful season overall, finishing 3rd at the end of the minor round and potentially threatening for finals success until COVID-19 abruptly stopped our season. Our mindsets throughout pre-season and approaching the start of the home-and-away season were positive and uplifting, knowing we had the talent to have a finals impact. We had a total of 21 players play 2nd Grade this season, through a mix of team selection and school cricket. However, this showcased the club’s depth and our team’s versatility to get the result under any conditions. The season was structured with five One Day Matches, winning three and seven Two-Day matches, winning five and drawing two, providing a solid position for finals cricket We had many outstanding individual and team performances, which as seen throughout recent years, was led but our bowling attack. All bowlers contributed to many game this year to make it easier on our batters, spearheaded by Marcus Lee with a total of 34 wickets at an outstanding average of 11.62. Similar

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

to previous years, we had a plethora of bowlers many who experienced 1st Grade cricket which was extremely pleasing to see. It was also pleasing to see Tom Rooney wreak havoc throughout his first season at this level, creating a solid base for the years to follow. The batting improved this year, in comparison to previous years. Often we had a large partnership within a game which allowed us to advance into a controlling position and contribute to winning the game. This was lacking in previous years, it was extremely pleasing to see that it was often different batters who would stand up and take the game on by building partnerships with someone. A special mention to former skipper Matthew WalmsleyPace who made 350 runs at an average of 58.33. Even though we didn’t get a chance to play finals this season, we have a lot of young exciting talent at the club coming through. With another season of experience under their belt, we will be more than capable of competing at the top of the ladder and taking a couple of steps further next year. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge all those who helped out in a slightly fickle year. Michelle Lee and Bruce Chapman, along with the many volunteers on game-day such as Dave Angove, Alan Scholz, David Boschma and Paul Angley. For all of their hard work, it enables the leader’s role to be made much easier, because they perform their work at a high level. On behalf of the team, many thanks for helping us run efficiently. I would also like to thank our boys who were extremely respectful and flexible throughout the season. While we didn’t get any silverware, we took many significant steps throughout the year to enable us to progress as a side and hopefully move us in the right direction to get some silverware in the coming seasons. Will Forster 2nd Grade Captain

WOMEN’S CLUB COACH’S REPORT

of winning. Congratulations to Anesu Mushangwe who was the winner of the Competition medal. In the post-Christmas ATCA competition, the Gold team narrowly missed out on finals with 4 wins and a draw, and the Black team posted a win and a draw. In the Gold team Alyssa Sedunary led the runs with 80 at 16 and Mariah Kollakombil led the bowling with 9 wickets at 6.56. In the Black team, Scout took 5 wickets at 13.6 and Lisa Mackensie made 76 runs. At the end of the day we introduced a lot of new girls to the game and competed at all times. We continued to run an academy and through the academy, the clubs work with Sacred Heart College and Seaview High School, we worked with over 70 girls and I am confident of the future of our Women’s program.

Season 2019/2020 was the fourth for our Women’s Group. We had a busy off season, applying for entry into the First Grade competition without success. We continued to run our academy and attracted such large numbers that we decided to enter two teams into the ATCA Women’s competition for the first time. There were two competitions for both SACA and ATCA. Pre-Christmas, a T20 comp was run by both Associations. In SACA, we played off in the Grand Final against Southerns, sadly falling short on the day. We won 5 of our 6 games. Nugget made 170 runs at 24.29 and Mikayla contributed strongly with 142 runs at 20.29. Lucy Bowering lead the bowling with 10 and Mikayla took 8 wickets to go with her excellent batting. During this competition, we welcomed Anesu Mushangwe from Zimbabwe who joined the team. In the ATCA competition, the Gold team finished 7th with 2 wins and the Black team 8th with 1 win. In the Gold team, Ella Tilley led the Batting with 54 runs from Erin Offord with 48, Lilly Woods took 5 wickets and Ella took 4. For the Black team, Marney Rees took 3 wickets, with Felicity Cox, Lillyana Widdison, Emily Mackensie, Mannat Kanda and Harmony Widdison all took 2. Akshaya Anandan led the batting with 51 runs. In the 40 over competition we finished in 2nd position, with 9 wins and a draw. Anesu led the way with 302 runs at 75.5, Nugget added 184 at 23 and Eleanor Larosa made 159 at 26.5. In the bowling Anesu led the competition with 27 wickets at 5, and Rachael Brown took 21 at 7.67. Abby Scott took 10 at 14.1. Sadly, due to the Covid virus, we didn’t get the opportunity to play off in finals, which we would have had an excellent chance

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Post Season, we have recruited Mary Waldron from Northern Districts, an Irish International Courtney Webb who is contracted to the Scorpions and the Renegades and Paris Crowe, a former first class player for Tasmania, who is looking to force her way into the Scorpions line up, both girls are from Tasmania. With these signings and more to come, we have been successful in winning a place in the First Grade competition for the coming season. This is the culmination of four years hard work by the girls and we look forward to the season ahead. Many thanks to all the people who helped with the Womens program this year, especially Kai Boschma, Ben Sedunary, Kyle and KJ Scott who capably looked after the teams on Game Day and helped run trainings and the academy. Thanks also to Anesu Mushangwe for her help with running trainings and her coaching and guidance to many of the girls throughout the season. Further thanks to Stephanie Dempster, Adam Brown, Scott Woods, David Boschma and many other parents and friends who helped out week after week on game days and off field. A special thanks to Cheryl Cook who has worked tirelessly for the womens game at the club. I would also like to thank the leaders among the girls, Mikayla Mark, Anesu Mushangwe, Alyssa Sedunary and Scout Sylva-Richardson. Personally, I would like to thank everyone at the Glenelg Cricket Club for their support of the Women’s Program and we will work tirelessly to continue to grow our program, and to bring home a First Grade Flag as soon as possible.

33

Finally, I would like to just add, what a wonderful experience it was for us to have welcomed our first International Player to the club. Anesu Mushangwe came to us from Zimbabwe and took a big chance on coming over here, without knowing anybody. She gave the club magnificent service on the field but also off it. She assisted in running trainings, was available for a hit with anyone who asked and has set up an excellent Private Coaching business which continues to help

develop our young players. This year Covid allowing, we hope to welcome players from Hampshire and another from Zimbabwe, and I think it is a fantastic thing to be able to welcome players from other cultures and countries to the Glenelg family, which enriches our program and also enriches the lives of those who come. Hopefully, Anesu will be granted Distinguished Talent status shortly and be with us full time. Graham Sedunary Women’s Coach

No sooner had the wickets and runs finished for 2019/20 season and the real work started in May for 1st Grade in 2020/21

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

40

3RD GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Sitting here in my home in self-imposed isolation, the cricket season feels an awful long time ago!! With all that is going on in the world at present, it is hard not to feel like cricket and sport in general is all somewhat irrelevant. But if anything, amongst other things of greater importance of course, this period of uncertainty has taught us how sport should indeed be cherished and celebrated. Amidst the current chaos, there is certainly lots to look back on and be proud of with the 3rd Grade this past season. After waiting out the bye round first up, a couple of industrial performances characterised by middle/lower order fightbacks saw us chalk up wins against Tea Tree Gully and Southerns. From then on in, the C’s produced a run of dominating wins either side of Christmas to leave us unbeaten and top of the ladder with 2 rounds to go. Unfortunately, a loss at the hands of Kensington was enough for them to leapfrog us for top spot and despite the best efforts from the boys to get an outright in the final round against Northerns, they were to remain there on the completion of the minor round fixtures and ultimately take the flag after the decision was made to cancel finals. With so many positive results, consistent individual performances were of course a feature. With the bat, as mentioned early season performances from the middle and lower order were the key to setting defendable scores in the one day fixtures. Contributions with the bat from gloveman James Muir as well as bowlers Lachie Combes, Jay Turlan and Sam van Daesdonk proved crucial. From then on, the top order came to the party and big partnerships were a mainstay. A special mention to top performer and vice-captain Steven Heatley, who finished with 3 half centuries as well as his first senior century with 102 vs Woodville, which saw him finish as top run scorer in the 3rd Grade competition with 377 runs. Sam Williams and Tom Worthington chalked up

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

two 50’s apiece, whilst Matt McInerney racked up 279 runs in just 3 games, including two half centuries and 136 vs Adelaide University. Other contributions in the top order throughout the season from Ben Sedunary, Zac McCabe, Jayson Bartolo and Riki Boshma meant commanding totals on the board were a regular occurrence. With the ball, a real pack-hunting mentality throughout the season was highlighted with the strange stat that, despite failing to bowl the other team out only twice (even with them being 8 or 9 wickets down), not one bowler took a 5 wicket haul. The healthy fast bowling stocks in the club meant a quality 4-pronged seam attack every round proved too much for the majority of the competition we were up against. The ever-reliable Lachie Combes was the mainstay with the new ball, finishing top wicket taker with 18 at 13.56. He was backed up with notable contributions throughout the season from fellow seamers Lawson Forster, Kevin Perrera, and Bradley Rayson, amongst others who were in and out of the team due to the fierce competition for seam spots. Contributions from spinners James Nicholson, Sam van Daesdonk and Sam Williams at different times provided the perfect foil for the quicks. Whilst ultimately disappointing not to finish top of the ladder, it is hard not to feel that winning a flag without a Grand Final would have felt somewhat ‘hollow’. As such, we can take the real positives from this season into next and with this current crop of players will certainly be looking to get the job done and go all the way. A huge thank you to scorer and 3rd Grade cult figure Ian Milne for his continued support of the side is certainly in order. A big tip of the cap too to Grant Francis and the coaching staff for all their input and hard work they put into the seniors. Finally, to all the board members, volunteers, parents and everyone else involved in the club from the ground up, we as a playing group are forever grateful for the work you put in to making Glenelg DCC such a great environment to play cricket in. Thank you. On behalf of the 3rd Grade playing group, I wish everyone a safe and healthy few months ahead in these uncertain times and look forward to the group getting back together once it has all blown over. Tom Worthington 3rd Grade Captain

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

43

4TH GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

After one season of playing one day games, SACA decided that the 4th Grade would go back to the usual fixture of two-day and one-day cricket for the 2019/2020 season. All players adapted well to the oneday format last year but the chance to play two-day games again was pleasing for all players. Readapting to the longer format was quite simple for us as we applied our main goals and basic strategies from the previous season to the upcoming one. From the batting perspective, it was very simple, bat out the allotted 80 overs per game. Majority of the time in this grade most teams win from this position so that’s always our main starting point. With bowling, we focused on good line and lengths, bowling to set fields and bowling in partnerships. With fielding, holding our catches is always the key to winning games of cricket. As a team we knew if we could stick to our goals, success will follow for our team. Our batting is something that is constantly improving and it was great that we could back up our performances again from last season. Again, having an even number of contributors allowed us to be competitive and stay in most games. Our leading run scorers included, Gavin Regan (245 @ 61.2), Josh Aulert (224 @ 37.3), Ben Sedunary (208 @ 52) and Brett Connor (204 @ 22.6). This resulted in both Gavin and Ben playing in the higher grades where their performances warranted selection. Other contributors varied each week, which meant that we weren’t just relying on sole individuals getting the job done. Our bowling and fielding improved once again by applying pressure early and being consistent with our lines and lengths. This season, the wickets were evenly spread among our bowlers than in previous years. Cam Lee (19 wickets @ 13.3) and Josh May (19 wickets @ 16.4) led the wicket tallies, Cam would always find a way to get an early wicket while Josh would find ways to dismiss batters with his spin. Other contributors included Joel Wilson (12 wickets @ 8) who played

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

only a handful of games and Mark Healey (12 wickets @ 10.8) who’s wisdom and experience always helped. Kyle Scott, Sam Van Daesdonk, Bradley Rayson, Kevin Perera and Michael O’Connor were others too that bowled significantly well during the year. A special mention to Andrew Landon, who came up from the juniors and played one game taking a superb (4/31). It’s always great to see juniors do well when given the opportunity at senior level. Once again, we had a mid-season T20 competition which as a playing group we looked forward too. We were fortunate enough to make the semi-finals again but could not quite get over the line in a very tight finish against Kensington. Overall, another good effort from our young team who learnt a lot from this experience. Brett Connor was given the chance to lead the T20 team and excelled by demonstrating great leadership and communication with the players. Great work Brett! We finished off strongly with our last few games to qualify for finals but due to unforeseen circumstances we could not finish our main season due to the COVID Pandemic. As disappointing as that is, there will always be another season and one which I see us going one step further. I can only see the team improving with a high quality of young talented cricketers pushing up from juniors, to the current crop of senior cricketers. I would expect a lot of the players to be playing higher grades next season and beyond. Over the season there were some outstanding individual performances, Ben Sedunary (113*) against West Torrens and Bradley Rayson’s (100*) against Adelaide were great knocks. Once again Gavin Regan was Mr reliable and consistent with the bat averaging (62). With the ball, Cam Lee produced a great spell of (7/54) against Woodville while Joel Wilson, Mark Healey and Josh May all collected five wicket hauls during the season. Congratulations to Ben Sedunary for winning the best player (McLeod/Wilson Medal) in the 4th Grade competition. Well done Sedge! Lastly, I would like to thank Grant Francis and all the coaching staff for their support and efforts during the year. A big thank you to the 4th Grade-playing group for all your help during the season, it is greatly appreciated. As a club we keep improving every season and with this, success is just around the corner for all grades at Glenelg Cricket Club. Finally, a massive thank you from the entire playing group to Peter Hanley (Gof) and David Boshcma for all your help, we really do appreciate it once again! Scott Applegarth 4th Grade Captain

JUNIOR COORDINATORS REPORT

Sarah Nunn, Ben Pike and Andrew Shaw - for their efforts, guidance and support throughout the season. From the moment the lads descended upon the Gillespie Sports Centre in late July, there was a huge amount of work needed to get the season off the ground and to then keep it in the air, so thank you. With former Junior Coordinator Ben Pike, Sarah Nunn and Cam Blizzard leaving the Committee, I would like to offer a special thanks to these people for their hard work and commitment to the Club over many seasons. We thank you for your service to the GDCC.

The 2019/20 junior cricket season was unique. As we approached a highly anticipated final series, with three of our four junior sides to be involved, COVID-19 escalated to the point the remainder of the season was cancelled. However, on reflection the season was a successful one for the Seahorses. Our U17 Shield team completed back-to-back wins in a great sign for future success as these boys move into the senior’s program. The U16 Whites finished top and were awarded the U16 White title for the season, given no finals could be played. The team also won the T20 tournament and for the season lost only one match. The U16 Reds finished in the top four for the regular season and made the finals of the T20 tournament and the U14 White team also finished in the top four. The U14 Reds narrowly missed the top four of their competition. The U12 Shield competition was called off due to a burst of December hot weather, however in the few friendly matches organised by Coach Tim Dyer, the lads showed excellent signs with some strong performances. Our coaching group of James Greenwell, Matthew Chapman, Ben Higgins, Tim Hoffman and Tim Dyer, ably supported by Oscar and Will Forster on Wednesday afternoons, have spent many hours running training and managing game days. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks also to members of the Junior Committee - Paul Angley, Cam Blizzard, David Dunne, James Greenwell,

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Thanks also to the parents. Whether it was your sensational afternoon teas or facing your demons with the scoring app. Perhaps it was bringing the ice or most importantly, getting the water to ice to cordial ratio perfect for the lads; your help is very much appreciated. Sporting clubs feed on the goodwill of the people within them and we are lucky to have you with us. To the lads, simply put, you played The Glenelg Way. I asked you all at the start of the season to make yourselves, your family, and your Club proud and you did that. To say the way the season finished totally sucked, is a complete understatement, but there was success enjoyed along the way, skills developed, progress made and friendships strengthened, so please don’t think the season is a waste. Under 17 Shield Season Summary – by Ben Higgins I will start by saying it was an absolute privilege to coach this outstanding group of young Glenelg players, as I had a front row seat to watch them play some outstanding cricket to win this competition for the second straight year. Congratulations boys, it is an outstanding achievement of which you should all be very proud. Coming into this year’s competition, we had high expectations following last year and having six players returning from that team. These experienced players were our top six in our batting line up, so it was thought this would be our strength. As it turned out the bowling and overall fielding was the strong point and a real highlight considering our fast bowling group were all first-year players (some with two years left in this competition). They helped us succeed, winning three of our four minor round games and dominating the finals, except for a little nervous time chasing the total against Sturt in the Grand Final.

48

We were well led by Isaac Higgins & Zac McCabe, who managed the bowlers and field settings outstandingly. The only negative was Isaac’s inability to win a toss!! The bowling unit work brilliantly together with all contributing at different stages. Individual highlights included Ollie Wilkinson’s 6 for 20 v Adelaide in the first game, Kelly Angove’s 6 for 23 v West Torrens, Nick Taylor’s finals performances taking 3 wickets in both games and Jordan Tilbrook taking a hat trick in the Grand Final! Special mention to Jesse Arthur who was the leader of our attack. Whilst he didn’t take big bags of wickets, he set the tone upfront in every game, bowling a heavy ball and putting pressure on the opposition’s best batsmen. Well done Jesse. Our batsmen didn’t have a lot to do as we bowled first in every game and the highest run chase was 137 v Sturt in Round 3. Isaac & Zac were the stand outs with the bat, which is not surprising as they are the most experienced and our State Under 17 opening batsmen. We chased very well in three of the minor round games, plus both finals, with the only hiccup in Round 2 v West Torrens when we failed to chase 114 being bowled out for 88 (losing 7 for 9!). This team has a lot of talent, but it was not just the talent that won us the title, it was the way they gelled as a team. This was evident in the way we fielded, always putting pressure on the batsmen with many run-out chances each game. Highlights of our fielding came from Henry McAuliffe with his outstanding run out in the semi-final and Tyreece Conway’s one-handed catch in the final. The club has a lot to look forward to over the next ten years, with all this talent evolving from the juniors. However, it is up to these players individually to work hard to continually improve their game to be the best they possibly can be. Congratulations again boys. Well played. I want to thank the following people for their assistance throughout this competition. Sam McCabe as Assistant Coach. Your input with the boys and myself was invaluable as was your calming influence during the games when the coach got a bit frustrated! Simon Wilkinson for his outstanding effort as Team Manager. Sarah Nunn, Dave Boschma and

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

Jenny Bullimore for organizing the one-day uniforms for the boys. Dave Boschma & Maria Scholz for organizing and producing the Premiership Photo. And thanks to all the parents that helped with the scoring as well as your support to me and the players throughout the tournament. As parents, I know it was very enjoyable and the boys appreciated the support. Under 16 Reds Season Summary – by James Greenwell What a Different Season that was. We began season 2019/20 with a large turnover of senior players from last season’s Under 16 squad. We introduced a larger than normal number of new players to the squad and farewelled a big group to senior cricket. After a poll of the players, Jessie Arthur was appointed captain and Chester Forster vice-captain. It is a great credit to both young men who set the standard at training and games all season and did a very good job leading the team. We won games early in the season on the back of some good quality bowling and fielding, while our young batting group took some time to come to terms with the requirements of Under 16 Reds cricket. The boys showed great resilience winning tight contests against Prospect and Southern Districts on the coldest day I can remember, with a very tight loss in between to Sturt who were bolstered by an A and B grader. The two-day games exposed our young batting group who struggled adapting to the requirements of batting for 70 overs, against some pretty good attacks. However, these experiences are part of the learnings of this level of competition. We did well in the 20/20 competition winning three out of four games, only being beaten by the eventual premiers, who beat us in the semi-final. Our batting was led by Riley Hill and Lachy Nash showing great maturity in their first season in Under 16 Reds, and some cameos from Kaidyn Webber and Jett Raphael, who saw the light at Christmas to join a better club. The bowling and fielding were generally of high quality and benefitted from contributions from everyone at different times, but highlighted by consistent performances from Kelly Angove, Jessie Arthur, Tom Wilkinson, Sam O’Donnell and Andrew Landon.

49

The resumption of the competition saw us struggling with the requirements of school cricket making selection very challenging. Our massive win against Port was a sign of what we are capable of, with a great platform set by Sam O’Donnell and Cameron Kiel at the top, before Jordy Tilbrook put on an exhibition, launching a number of very big balls into the surrounding houses at sunny Rosewater.

Our young batting group took some time to come to

We lost a tight 40 over game to eventual Premier* (the asterisk refers to a premiership under unusual circumstances, much like the SANFL premiership “won” by North Adelaide in 2018), before ending the season in very fine style.

I want to acknowledge the outstanding result of Ben

We defeated Kensington outright in just over a day and half and then were three overs short of a 10 wicket win against Northern Districts in the last two games. There were some outstanding individual performances in these games, including James Pike with bat and ball against Kensington and Andrew Landon with the ball and Riley Hill with the bat against Northern Districts.

most of the squad, under some terrific leadership from

I genuinely feel we had great form and momentum leading into the semi-finals and were capable of doing some real damage, with a side that was finally looking settled and starting to play at the standard we were capable of. Unfortunately, as we now know, someone in China ate a bat that had eaten a snake, and were all locked up in our houses for a period of time and we’ll never know what we could have achieved. I want to acknowledge several young men who are now leaving the junior program to progress to senior cricket. To Jessie, Chester, Pikey, Gaurav, Jett, AJ, Nick, Kel, Oscar, Lachy Hayball, Will, Huddo, Rupert and Jacko, it’s been a privilege to work with you and I really wish you the best in the future. To take 32 wickets across both comps (and lead the bowling in the 17 Shield), is a fantastic performance from Jessie Arthur. He improved as a bowler and leader tremendously this season and I’m confident he can have an exciting future at the club. Congratulations on a great season. He was well supported by Kelly Angove, Jordy Tilbrook, Andrew Landon, James Pike, Tom Wilkinson, Ben Newman and Nick Taylor who formed a strong bowling group, all of whom at different times produced high quality spells. The spinners Gaurav Vashist, Sam O’Donnell, Hudson Perks and Bodie Hosking also made important contributions at different times.

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

terms with the Under 16 Reds competition, but Riley Hill, Lachy Nash, Kaidyn Webber Jordy Tilbrook, Jett Raphael and Bodie Hosking all made contributions at different times and with most of them available again next season, we have expectations they can develop into high class players capable of very good things.

Higgins’ Under 17 side who won the competition for the second year in a row. This is a tough thing to win once but to go back-to-back is a fantastic achievement and was won on the back of an even contribution from Isaac Higgins. To the Under 16 Whites, congratulations on an outstanding season. To go through losing one game (even if it was to Port) is a very good performance. This was a very tough season with many of the Under 16 squad being dragged to school cricket, so we had to deal with constant selection upheaval and rarely were we able to put our best team on the ground. This affects the Under 16 whites the most, but Chappy was endlessly patient and was able to provide the direction and structure that allowed the boys to remain focused and committed. His support for me and wise counsel was invaluable. I’d like to thank Mark Hofmeyer for a tireless job in what turned out to be a very strange and difficult season and the other junior coaches Ben Higgins, Tim Hoffman and Tim Dyer who are all committed to make the players in the squads the best they can be. The knowledge, hours and energy they put into this is a great indication of why Glenelg’s junior program is the envy of most in the competition In

conclusion,

although

the

season

finished

unsatisfactorily, I believe the club has a very bright and exciting future, with another group of talented young men moving into senior cricket, which is ultimately the responsibility of the junior program. I look forward to watching their progress with great interest and feel we have a strong base for another successful season next season.

Under 16 Whites Season Summary – by Matthew Chapman Reflecting on the Under 16 Whites season that was, the first thing that comes to mind is how much of a pleasure and privilege it has been to work with a great group of boys. To be rewarded with two premierships in one season is terrific, but even more important was the enjoyment we had along the way. We all should be very proud of our U16s as a whole group; they are a terrific bunch and their teamwork and willingness to improve every week is really something. The season began with Lachlan Hayball appointed captain. Unfortunately for Lachy, injury and then school cricket meant he didn’t see much action. Whilst injured, Lachy came to all our games (home and away) to contribute, proving his leadership qualities. Zachary Chapman then assumed the captaincy for most of the season. It was a role that he grew into and learnt an enormous amount from. I thank Zac for his on-field leadership. Our season began with four consecutive one-day games and strong victories against East Torrens, Southern Districts, Sturt and Prospect, giving us an early indication that our best cricket was very competitive. One of our key batting targets is to achieve 50+ run partnerships and to have top six batters take games deep into our batting innings. Against Southern Districts this was highlighted by a 150+ run partnership with Will Trevena going on to make a fantastic 114 not out. We then entered two-day games against Adelaide and West Torrens. The boys put together a near complete game of cricket against Adelaide, batting almost all their 70 overs for 182 before bowling Adelaide out for 161 with disciplined bowling and excellent fielding. An extra special win which showed us how sticking to processes and executing skills consistently generally puts us in a winning position. The West Torrens game was not one of our better performances in the field, but thankfully our batters were able to deliver an excellent performance to chase the 188 for victory and an undefeated first half of the year was the reward. The season paused for the T20 competition, where we commenced with a double-header and a big win over Sturt, followed by a hard-fought win against competition benchmark, Adelaide. Without doubt, our high-quality fielding was our point of difference in both games. We returned after the Christmas break

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

with dominant wins over Southern Districts and Port Adelaide, which included Gaurav Vashist’s incredible T20 figures of 5 for 5. A home semi-final awaited and a big win over West Torrens put us into the Grand Final. Batting first against Kensington we made a competitive 3/103, ‘Gaz’ completely dominant with 52 off 38 balls the standout. Our bowling and fielding proved too strong, restricting our opponents to 9/96. The boys thoroughly deserved their success. Gaurav Vashist was undoubtedly the player of the T20 series and final. We returned to action in the grade competition and after an abandoned game due to wet weather, we faced Port Adelaide. From the start of the game, we were unable to get into the contest. We lost clumps of wickets and were unable to produce partnerships with some late order batting helping us to just 108. Our bowling was very good, unfortunately not supported by our catching and Port passed us in the 40th over. For us it was a disappointing result and our only loss for the year but was a reminder about maintaining focus on the things we control, like our attitude on game-day. The following round we comprehensively took care of Tea Tree Gully thanks to Harry Fiebig’s maiden 50 for the Seahorses and a complete, all-round bowling performance. Special mention also to U14 player, Kieren Scannell for his five dismissals behind the stumps in that game. We again defeated Kensington, this time in Beyond Blue Round, highlighted by another strong 100+ run partnership with the bat and some exceptional bowling and fielding efforts. Congratulations to Zachary Chapman for being awarded the Beyond Blue Medal. Our last game against Northern Districts was a complete batting effort. We were able to declare on day one with 232 on the board thanks to half centuries to Will Trevena, Will McAuliffe and Nick Taylor, before Nick struck twice late on day one to have us in a near unbeatable position. Unfortunately, the boys didn’t get to finish their work and that game and ultimately the season came to a sudden and disappointing end.

51

I would like to acknowledge Will Trevena who was recognised as our ‘whites’ leading run scorer and the leading run scorer in the whole competition, in just four games! It can be tough at times moving between teams (reds to whites to school cricket) but Will did this on more than one occasion and always maintained his quality contributions to the team. Well done Will!

goes into a cricket season from a coaching perspective

Our leading wicket taker across the T20 and grade competition was Oscar Hofmeyer. Oscar did a terrific job as the leader of our bowling attack, taking early wickets and always making things really challenging for opposition batters. Oscar took 22 wickets in both competitions and was a significant part of our success. Gaurav Vashist is our Seahorse Medalist for season 2019/20. After a steady start to his season, Gaz produced some match winning performances, most notably in the T20 final as mentioned. He is a very talented young player and I am so pleased he came to our club this season. Gaz won the award from Will Trevena in 2nd, Oscar Hofmeyer 3rd, Rupert Males and James Pike equal 4th. Each of those players made solid contributions throughout the season. A special mention also to Will McAuliffe as our wicket keeper who continuously improved throughout the season, making some excellent dismissals and maintaining excellent leadership standards behind the stumps.

things at Glenelg.

Throughout the season 28 players saw action in the whites. To maintain such high winning standards within the group with so many changes each week has been a credit to the boys.

them and understand their strengths and weaknesses.

A big thank you to the parents and extended family members who supported the Under 16 Whites this season. It was vital to have you as part of the journey. I also acknowledge all parents that contributed to the scoring and ground set up. This really makes the job of coaching our boys an easy one. You all play an important role. I would particularly like to acknowledge Mark Hofmeyer for his support, not only as Junior Coordinator, but also for helping to manage the team each week by taking care of the little things on game day. Finally, a big thank you to James Greenwell for his work throughout the year. Many hours of work behind the scenes goes into putting two teams on the park each week. James has committed a huge amount of personal time and effort to this group of boys. A lot of unseen work

GLENELG DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

and James invests significant energy to see our boys improve and experience success. On many occasions during the year, opposition coaches complimented the Whites on our preparation, excellent fielding and disciplined bowling efforts. This is a significant acknowledgement that we are doing a lot of good

Farewell to the second year Under 16 lads who have finished their junior careers. It has been a pleasure working with you all. All the very best with your future playing careers. In signing off, I hope to see many of you again in the pre-season. With some luck… and good social distancing, we might just see a new season start on time! Under 14 Reds Season Summary – by Ben Higgins This season was a great development year for the Under 14s, not only in the Reds but in both teams as we had a number of first year players to the club and also to Under 14 cricket generally. In addition, as a new coach for the boys it took me some time to get to know

This meant a bit of a slow start to the season regarding wins, losing three of the first four games, although we were very competitive in all games. However, we got our season off and running in our fifth game against Adelaide, where we chased down 213 runs against a strong bowling line-up. This was our best win for the year and then followed it up with a convincing win over West Torrens. We then went into a break to play T20 cricket which for the Reds was a challenge as we were not a big hitting team and therefore struggled to score quickly enough as this type of cricket demands. Hence, we only won one of our four games to miss the finals. However, the last game win against Port Adelaide really showed how the boys had learnt a lot from this competition in terms of how to score by working in partnerships, picking up the 1s and 2s from good balls and punishing their bad balls.

52

Returning to the main competition, we continued the good form from before Christmas by winning three of our four remaining games (one wash out), with the three wins being very convincing against Port Adelaide, Tea Tree Gully and Northern Districts where we made 303 chasing their 132. Our only blemish was against Kensington where we lost a low scoring game, even though we took 18 wickets for the match! This lost ultimately cost us a spot in the finals with Kensington taking the fourth position that we held for the later part of the season. Even though we missed the finals, I feel the year was an extremely positive one from where we started from to where we finished. All the boys showed excellent improvement throughout the year with some outstanding individual performances across the team, that I would like to acknowledge. We were very well lead by Declan Dunne (Captain) and Kieran Scannell (VC) both in games and at training where they got the boys warmed up and ready to go, whilst I was still getting set up. The team really responded well to their leadership. Declan had a great season leading our batting line up with his opening partner Joel George, highlighted by his 101no in our last game versus Northern Districts. Joel had his own highlight of the season against Port Adelaide scoring 64.

impressed me and I know the parents could see this as well. We even had a couple of opposition coaches comment how impressed they were on how the team acted as a team and carried themselves on the field, showing great sportsmanship. The boys should be very proud of themselves for this and for the great year they have had. Overall, I want to thank the boys for their efforts, both at training and in games. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching these boys and I look forward to watching them develop further as they progress through the grades at the Club. I would also like to thank the parents for their support of me and the boys this season. Their willingness to help with scoring, setting up the ground and tidying up at the end of play, plus the excellent afternoon teas provided, all was very much appreciated and allowed me to concentrate on coaching. Special thanks to Mark Candy, Dave Dunne, Ian Thomas, Nigel Percy and Nathan Sinclair for their help and support to me this season. Thank you to Tim Hoffman for coaching the U14 Whites. Your input and understanding when we moved players up and down throughout the year was really appreciated. Thanks to James Greenwell for your support to me and

Congratulations to Kieran Scannell who took out the Junior Wicketkeeping award. Kieran was outstanding all season behind the stumps, diving around the place and completing some nice stumpings. He also made some handy runs as well. Jonty Higgins our Seahorse Medalist and leading wicket taker led our attack superbly with his fast mediums, often being too quick for the opposition batsmen. His batting also improved significantly this season with the highlight being his 100no to steer us home against Adelaide. Congratulations to Harry Plews on winning our fielding award. His energy and quick movement in the field was outstanding and set the standard for the team. Well done boys on your awards. Whilst we had some excellent individual performances, it was the way the boys developed a strong team first and bonded throughout the season that really

assistance with team selections, I really appreciate your help mate. And Mark Hofmeyer as Junior Coordinator, a big thank you for your work throughout this season. You have done an amazing job and your support to the coaches was outstanding. I know everyone in the Juniors are extremely grateful for the work you put in. Thanks boys and all the best next season and beyond. Under 14 Whites Season Summary – by Tim Hoffman The 2019/20 season has seen a tremendous result and a great learning experience for all the boys. We started the season with a group of young lads that had varying degrees of experience and abilities and by the end of the season, we had 24 players recorded as playing for the Whites and finishing in the top four of the competition.

53

Despite being a Premier Club competition, we aimed to provide an environment where all lads were given a chance to prove their skills and learn across all areas of their games. This was highlighted throughout the year with players batting up and down the order and even games where we bowled as many as nine bowlers. Throughout the season, the boys were encouraged to do the basics of the game without forgetting to actually ‘play the game of cricket’. This simply means that when batting, you are there to make runs and when bowling, to take wickets! Sound simple; but not always easy to execute.

their skills and test themselves against other talented players from across Adelaide. May I congratulate all the boys on their enthusiasm, endeavour and efforts at trainings and games and sincerely trust that they will be back at Glenelg ready to tackle the 2020/21 season. I would also like to thank the parents and families for their support over the year, with a special thank you to Darren Banyer who supported me with the training, coaching and games each week. Many thanks to the players for making my job such a pleasurable one.

There were some great individual performances from players throughout the season with both bat and ball, but the key to our success, was the team always worked well together and we were able to spread the performances across the entire group. This was the key to finishing in the top four.

SACA Awards – Glenelg Award Winners

I would like to thank the parents who supported me throughout the year and this included scoring and setting up the ground for our home games. In summary, I look forward to seeing the boy’s progress throughout the grades and one day, being members of the senior grades at the Seahorses.

Academy Season Summary – by Tim Dyer The Glenelg Academy squad was put together after an extensive trialing and selection process in July and August last year. Fifteen talented players were identified and keenly trained and worked on skill development activities, with the aim of taking on the SACA State Under 12 Shield scheduled in December. Unfortunately, with over 40 degrees forecast for three of the four days, the SACA cancelled the carnival, much to the disappointment of all the lads and their families. To make up for this the Glenelg Academy played four matches with other District Club’s Under 12s and showed what a strong group of players the club has coming through.

The Peter Wang Award recognises a youth squad cricketer who displays excellent cricket ability, high work ethic, admirable team loyalty, distinguished character and respect for the spirit of the game. U17 Male AE Smith Trophy batting award - Isaac Higgins - 425 runs Higgins was the leading run scorer of the U17 National Championships in Queensland with 425 runs and a high score of 110 not out. Mark Hofmeyer, GDCC Junior Co-ordinator

Glenelg won all four of the 30 over a side games, with strong performances in all areas. Glenelg 7/191 defeated Adelaide 6/130 in a 40 over game, we beat Kensington comfortably, defeated Woodville 4/116 vs Glenelg 5/146 and finally a good win over Sturt with Glenelg making 4/119 and bowling Sturt out for 88! These games gave our players a chance to develop
