Artisan Rolled Rims

Artisan Rolled Rims

Our Artisan Rolled Rims are made completely freehand, without the assistance of molds, by a workshop in Impruneta that dates back to the 1600’s. The large pots are built using the “coil method.” That is, the potter rolls out a coil of clay and, walking around in a circle, carefully and skillfully builds up the walls of the pot. He can add only four to six inches a day. Each day, after the previous day’s work has dried a bit, he adds another layer. Finally, the rim at the top is formed by hand in a way that is impossible to replicate by any other method: you can feel the difference when your fingers fit snugly underneath the curve. This whole process is highly time consuming and requires an extraordinary amount of skill that only a very few artisans possess. The result is a distinctivelyhandmade-looking planter that is truly a piece of sculpture. Each 28”, 32” and 36” Artisan Rolled Rim is signed and dated. For our Molded Rolled Rim Collection please see page 11.

Rolled Rim Vases 20” and smaller have one band. Those 24” and greater have two bands.

Each 28”, 32”and 36” Artisan Rolled Rim is signed and dated.

Molded Rolled Rim Vase

Molded Rolled Rims

Our Molded Rolled Rims are made by hand in molds. Here, the clay is pounded into the molds by hand. After about twentyfour hours the mold is removed and a potter finishes the pot with hand tools. Because this process requires less time and skill than the freehand rolled rims in our Artisan Collection (page 5), we can offer these pots to you at a more economicalprice. They are still top qualityImpruneta pots — beautiful and durable.

Elliptical Grey Pot

Grey Terra Cotta

Our grey terra cotta is created by adding mineral oxides to the clay mixture as well as to the surface of the pots. The result is a polychromatic grey that varies from dark to light with white highlights and the occasional finger or hand print. It is a warm grey with hints of brown that has more depth and character than cement or cast stone. Of course, you can expect the same quality and durability from these pots as you do from our pink terra cotta.

The Agresti Vase

The urns for our Large Agresti Vase are made freehand like our Artisan Rolled Rims. The masks, rosettes and garlands that adorn them are formed in original molds from the famous 19th Century workshop of Raffaello and Michele Agresti. These urns were originally made in the 1880’s for Biltmore House in Asheville, N.C. for the Vanderbilt family. They still remain at the estate today. Each of our Large Agresti Vases is signed by the master who makes them, as any great work of art should be.

Bamboo Box

Mario Nievera

“I wanted to design these pieces to compliment the Impruneta terra cotta finish and quality. I’m fascinated with faux bois garden ornaments; the size of our faux bois planters allows for planting flexibility, symmetrical or asymmetrically balanced pot arrangements and durability in many climates. The bamboo box is large enough for citrus trees, topiaries, standards as well as multi-flowered planting. The Chippendale pattern is wonderful in formal settings, yet bamboo makes it playful and casual. The bun feet allow for circulation, yet compliment the planter.”

Ken Druse is a man of many talents –award-winning author, photographer, lecturer and passionate gardener. Now he can add to his list of accomplishments the creation of this overgrown vegetable for the garden. He loves it with the top on as a work of fine art sculpture, or off as a planted container – an organic addition to the garden scene. (It’s also a handy place to stash garden tools.)

Have fun with it. As Ken says, “You don’t need permission to make a work of art in your own backyard.”

Charlotte Moss

Charlotte Moss is a renowned interior designer, author, and owner of The Charlotte Moss Townhouse, the lifestyle boutique in New York City. Her glorious chinoiserie planter was inspired by the Pagoda at Chanteloup in France’s Loire Valley. Designed by architect Louis-Denis le Camus and built in 1775, the Chanteloup Pagoda is the only structure remaining of the chateau built by the Duc de Choiseul.

“Several years ago on a visit there I climbed the seven stories by an interior circular staircase, passing by balustrades and window grilles all made from different Chinese fretwork patterns and ideograms that represent love, wisdom, and friendship. I will always associate fretwork with Chanteloup.”

Robert Dash

Robert Dash was an accomplished artist and gardener. His paintings are in over two dozen national and international museums. He was the founder of the Madoo Conservancy and the author of “Notes from Madoo”.

“I wanted The Poetry Pot to look ancient and hoary, as if it had been buried for centuries under the sea, which is why some of the words have been rubbed out. The script was incised in imitation of cuneiform or something Greek. The various rhymes circle around Madoo, which means “My Dove”, therefore “love” and “glove” and “above”. The text has echoes of my favorite Gertrude Stein: ‘I am rose’.”

“I consider my own gardens — where a clay pot is never less important than what’s planted in it — when Mara and Lenore ask me to design a pot for the SEIBERT & RICE‘American Collection.’

I draw a basic Long Tom. It grows into a Longer Tom with a thin rolled edge at the top. And another roll at the base, for balance. I doodle wispy vines. They will be incised above and below the rims. I doodle some friendly critters, homage to my coworkers in the gardens that we share.

They are hand-throwing the pots that I designed, these artisans of Impruneta who don’t speak any English. My Italian couldn’t be worse. Yet, positioning Abbie’s critters with the flying ones on top and the crawlers on the bottom, that was their interpretation. We’re talking the same language, the language of the garden.”

“I am so excited and happy to have the chance to do this project with Mara and Lenore of SEIBERT & RICE. The work they have brought over from Impruneta has always been a joy for me to see, and I am very proud to be invited to work with them and their potters. I wanted to put together a collection of pots that had a history for American gardening and pieces that might fill a gap in our gardening community. Each piece has a personal background for me and, I hope, will answer certain problems found in vessel placement in the garden. All of the pots work well together to make a wonderful presentation. I am so proud of them and look forward to seeing pictures of what you, the gardener, do with them.”

Jack Lenor Larsen is a renowned textile designer, author, collector, and the founder of the magnificent Longhouse Reserve in East Hampton, NY. “As LongHouse is much involved these days with annual planter exhibitions, I designed a new planter series with the fulsome bowls elevated on sturdy pedestals. This new form was inspired by a princely Japanese lacquer bowl.”

Ryan Gainey

Gardener, designer, author, showman. Anyone who has ever met Ryan Gainey will never forget him. He is an internationally renowned and awardwinning garden designer and has designed an extensive and beautiful collection of home and garden accessories. Ryan draws his inspiration for all of his work from nature. So, in designing these pots for us, he incorporated natural elements from his southern surroundings — pinecones and pine needles; acorns and oak leaves. The Turpentine Pot is inspired by the vessels used to collect pine sap for making turpentine in his native South Carolina.

Birds, bees, flowers, and trees. Landscape designer, horticulturalist, gardener and bird lover, Richard Hartlage brought together all of his passions in this series for The American Collection. As a lover of joyful design, Richard incorporated the beautiful things that inspire him in the garden.

Traditional lines give the containers strong, functional forms. The birds, bees, flowers and trees create a modern and playful motif. Cheerfully warbling barn swallows swoop around the Bird Pot, and a stately California quail perches on the wood grain patterned rim. Honeybees buzz around the Bee Pot grounded by honeycomb. Trilliums delicately encircle the Hanging Flower Pot. The Tree Pot is ringed by a chain of native dogwood flowers, and white oak acorns line the base where a sweet songbird, the titmouse, rests.

Custom Capabilities & Historical Reproduction 52

Custom Capabilities & Historical Reproductions

Our workshops in Impruneta can reproduce historical planters to replace lost or damaged pieces from distinctive homes or institutions. For the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. we even located original molds that were used to make urns for the home in the 1800’s. For the Boston Public Library designed by McKim, Mead & White we created identical replicas based on photos and measurements of the originals. We can also create original custom planters incorporating design elements specified by the client as we did for the New York Botanical Garden. Please call our office to discuss the possibilities.

Why Seibert & Rice

Beauty – We have hand selected the best pieces from the best workshops in Impruneta. The design, style and proportions of each piece we select are perfect. The workmanship is flawless.

Quality – We work only with the best workshops in Impruneta. We do not represent any workshops that use less accomplished artisans, that produce imperfect work or that produce terra cotta outside the zone while maintaining an Impruneta showroom only for the address.

Timelessness – Seibert & Rice terra cotta is heirloom quality terra cotta that increases in value over time. Our classic designs are timeless and work with every style of architecture.

Distinction – Each Seibert & Rice terra cotta is handmade by a master. Many of the pieces are hand signed and dated. There is no question that a pot stamped with the name Seibert & Rice is the finest terra cotta pot that one can buy.

Care of our frostproof pots

Seibert & Rice terra cotta is the most durable terra cotta in the world. The combination of the chemical composition of the Impruneta soil and the high firing process means these pots can be left outdoors year round in even the harshest climates.

Seibert & Rice terra cotta pots are frost proof to -20°F as long as you follow these simple procedures:

• Lift the pots off the ground on wedges, pot feet or wooden blocks so that there is at least an inch between the drainage hole and the ground.

• Always make sure the drainage holes are clear.

• Do not use saucers outside in the winter. (Water can collect in the saucer and prevent the pot from draining properly.)

• Leave soil in the pot rather than leaving the pot empty. Empty pots tend to fill with leaves and other debris that can clog the drainage hole and allow water to accumulate.

• Every three or four years, you should remove a plant from its pot, rotate it, and trim the roots. Make sure the plant does not become pot-bound and that the roots do not clog the drainage holes..

Our Clients’ Comments

“Here at The New York Botanical Garden, we are all in love with SEIBERT & RICEterra cotta pots. Not only are they among the most beautiful pots for plants — with the lovely soft hues of Italian terra cotta setting off the plants — but they are also remarkably resilient out-of-doors here in the Northeast. We have had our glorious pairs of 4' custom pots come sailing beautifully through six record winters with no damage at all — winters with single digit temperatures, heavy snow, ice, sleet, and everything in between. How truly luxurious to be able to have such magnificent Italian terra cotta out-of-doors year-round in Zone 6 — thank you SEIBERT & RICE!”
