State purchases $3.4 million ferry for Kampsville By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Commuters traveling across the Illinois River to and from Kampsville will soon be traversing the river on a brand new barge and push boat in Kampsville. In a press release issued by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s office Oct. 24, the ferry in Kampsville – the Kampsville II, which has been in service since 1978 – will be replaced by a new $3.4 million vessel. The ferry between Calhoun County and Greene County connecting Route 108 and

Route 96 is one of two ferries which operates on the Illinois River. The second one is also located in Calhoun County in Brussels. In fact, the new ferry which has an engine meeting EPA Tier 3 Standards for emissions – aimed at reducing tailpipe and evaporative emissions – was purchased with the intent to bring it downriver to operate at the Brussels ferry location if necessary, Dave Blanchette, press secretary with Gov. Quinn’s office, said. “The whole idea is to make them interchangeable

and flexible so they can service both ferries,” Blanchette said. According to numbers issued by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the boat in Kampsville ferried more than 280,000 vehicles across the river in 2012, despite closing for three weeks due to ice. IDOT estimates around 1,000 vehicles use the ferry daily. The new boat will carry three fewer cars than the retiring Kampsville ferry, which will be salvaged to “defray some of the costs of the new vessels,” Jae Miller, a spokes-

woman for IDOT, said in an email Monday. Kampsville II held 18 vehicles. Kampsville II, a 50-foot twin screw diesel-powered push boat, suffered from regular wear and tear carrying vehicles across the Illinois River, but because of its age and the decreasing availability of replacement parts, a new ferry was a necessity. Routine and preventative maintenance proved costly, as well. Another push boat and barge, Miss Illinois and Barge 12, were placed at the Kampsville location in 1998 to be used in conjunction

with the Kampsville II. However, the newest vessel comes in two parts – push boat and barge – which have to be built to IDOT specifications. IDOT accepted a bid from the lone bidder, Massman Construction Company, which quoted the vessels at $3,365,735. Federal Ferry Boat Discretionary Funds will pay for 80 percent of the total cost of the ferry while the state will match with the remaining 20 percent of the cost. The Kampsville Ferry has been in operation since the 1830s when fares were $.12

Woman receives four years for forgery By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald A 38-year-old woman was transported to Illinois Department of Corrections Monday after being sentenced to four years in prison for forgery. Jennifer Camden was charged with forgery Aug. 12, 2013, according to documents filed with

the circuit clerk. Documents state Camden, “while standing in a position of trust and confidence with Paul Hanks, an elder person over the age of 80, knowingly and by deception obtained control over Paul Hanks’ bank account at the Bank of Calhoun County having a value of more than $5,000, having signed Paul Hanks’ name to his checks.” Hanks is a community figure most known for his work establishing the Calhoun County Health

Department where he served as president for 40 years. The field house at Calhoun High School is also named after the 92-year-old man. According to court documents, Camden waived a trial by jury and pleaded guilty to the forgery charge, which is a Class 3 felony. Camden was ordered restitution of $5,687 with $5,300 of that money returning to Hanks.

It wasn’t until the 1940s with a boat called the Carrollton that the traditional barge and push boat ferry was implemented, and a year later, the state acquired the ferry from the private company. Since that time, ferry trips have been at no cost to those crossing the river.

By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald A man charged with reckless homicide following a fatal rollover of a four-door Ford F-250 truck near Hamburg Oct. 20 was released on bond Oct. 23 after the amount was reduced. The bond for Randy Clendenny, the driver of the vehicle, was initially set at $200,000. He voluntarily turned himself in Oct. 23 and bond was reduced to $100,000. Clendenny was driving the four-door truck when he lost control of the vehicle as he backed out onto the highway resulting in the death of April L. McKee, 31-years-old. Six people were in the truck at the time of the rollover and the vehicle flipped approximately two-and-a-half times before it came to rest on its passenger side in a cornfield south of Mozier Hollow Road. said McKee was partially out of the vehicle when the vehicle came to rest, suggesting she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. It is not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the cause of the crash as toxicology and autopsy reports had not been received by the sheriff’s office as of Monday afternoon. Only three of the passengers in the vehicle requested medical assistance, being Randy Clendenny, Leanne Clendenny and Milisha Y. Crowder. Other passengers – Cody M. Collard and Thomas L. McKee, husband of the deceased – were not listed as receiving medical treatment, Heffington said. The investigation is still pending while the sheriff awaits toxicology and autopsy reports. Clendenny has a Nov. 19 court date on the reckless homicide charge.

The Calhoun Community Unit School District board discussed the process of aligning the district’s courses to the Common Core Standards to prepare students for changes to standardized testing. Kate Sievers, CCUSD 40 superintendent, said the district used its adequate yearly progress (AYP) data to make progressive changes to its curriculum from kindergarten through grade 12. Tests will ask how students arrived at certain answers, and require more critical thinking to reach the correct answers for the tests. One of the district’s changes was in the mathematics area where students will be introduced to statistics and probability information prior to their standardized testing. “By aligning those classes and those courses with the Common Core, we were able to make sure those kids got a dose of that before they go take those tests,” Sievers said. Overall, the superintendent said she thinks the Common Core Standards will be a good thing for Illinois schools, noting it is hard to fight against higher standards for students. She said districts will have standards for which to strive and a means to close any potential gaps in their education process. The district’s teachers have been working for a year-and-a-half to prepare for the switch to the Common Core Standards, and familiarize themselves with the changes. “They look different, and they’re worded a lot different than what the Illinois State Standards were years ago,” Sievers said. She said the change will also give teachers direction for their courses to better cater to students’ futures after high school graduation. Educators in different subject areas are also coordinating curriculum together to reinforce learning in core subjects like English language arts and mathematics. She said, previously, teachers were rather isolated from one another based on the material being taught, though some courses – calculus and physics for instance – were closely linked, allowing teachers to share and schedule similar material at similar times. With the new standards however, coordination is paramount. “It’s a given anymore,” Sievers said. “Everything is pretty much intertwined, which is a good thing because that way the kids can see the reinforcement from class to class.” English language arts and social studies introduce another such overlap in curriculum as reading and writing skills will be reinforced in history and social science courses. Sievers said even industrial arts classes and agriculture have to incorporate teachings from other disciplines to aid in the reinforcement of skills. “We kind of took baby steps last year,” Sievers said. “And then this year, we let go of the hands.” Sievers said the district has also established districtwide reading goals for students to achieve as it seeks to improve its standardized test scores in the future. In addition to discussing the district improvement plan, the school board: n Approved the retirement of Nancy Myers effective at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. n Approved the maternity leave for Tera Pohlman. n Approved interfund loan transfers. n Approved fundraisers for the band. n Approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the bills.

Brussels talks school maintenance, bus repair By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald With potential maintenance grants available, the Brussels Community Unit School District 42 board discussed how it would move forward with improvements to the district’s buildings during a school board meeting Oct. 22. Mark Martin, superintendent, said the industrial tech building for the district is in need of repairs, most notably for greater energy efficiency. “It’s an old building. The siding is in poor repair. It has little or no insulation. Some of the windows are pretty old,” Martin said. The district received a maintenance grant more than a year ago to repair its aged septic system. The maintenance grants are matching grants, however, so the district has to use some of its funds to pay for the

work, as well. With a tighter budget this year than in years past, Martin said he is trying to be more conservative with the district’s money, while also balancing the district’s needs for improvements. “It definitely needs it. It’s just that money is tight right now,” Martin said. “I’m leery of spending almost anything now.” General State Aid has slowly declined during the past few years while Illinois prorates the money issued to districts in the state, meaning it keeps a certain percentage owed to Illinois schools. The proration was 89 percent last year and remained the same this year. The proration could drop lower next year, meaning schools could lose additional funds, Martin said. The superintendent said the board approved to seek bids for the indus-

trial tech building work to better understand the potential cost of the work to the industrial arts building and confirm the financial feasibility to complete those improvements. Additionally, the board examined problems with one of the district’s buses which is in need of transmission repair. Martin said the back-up bus – the district has two and both are owned, rather than leased, by the district – is not used all the time, but in certain circumstances, it is put into service. “No. 9 has some transmission problems. It’s an old bus but there are times when we really need it, like on an afternoon where we have to run our bus routes and maybe we have a couple of away games,” Martin said. No action was taken regarding the bus. The board will await further details about its status and make a

decision on how to proceed at a later date, Martin said. In other business, the board: n Approved the boys and girls basketball teams to travel to the state finals to watch the last game of the season. n Approved the district’s annual audit. The district was found to be in good standing. n Did not take action regarding a health life safety survey for Four Rivers Special Education District. n Approved the addition of a skills checklist to the kindergarten through second grade report cards. n Congratulated newest members of the National Honor Society who were inducted Sept. 24. New members are Marisa Kuhn, Hannah Robeen, Adrianna Eberlin, Tyler Friedel and Jordan Ohlendorf. n Approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the bills.

The case was investigated by Illinois State Police, Jerseyville Police Department and the United States Secret Service Southern Illinois Cyber-Crime Unit.

Griesemer, identified as CW-2, on Oct. 10 Griesemer was led to believe CW-2’s daughter, who was said to be turning 9 two days later, would be made available for between $150 and $200. Griesemer allegedly responded by text message “if it goes smooth and I get what I want, I’ll pay the 200$ an (sic) if not I’ll give what I think is fair…” Later in the day, Griesemer sent text messages asking that CW-2 ensure her daughter not talk about the incident, stating “cause if she does we’re all going down! I don’t want that.” A meeting was set up at CW-1’s Jerseyville apartment for approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 10. Once inside, Griesemer entered CW-1’s bedroom and was arrested by a Jerseyville police officer and two secret service agents. A condom, two bottles of lubricant, a small blue vibrator and $311 cash was seized

By STAFF REPORT Calhoun News-Herald A 39-year-old Jersey County man is being held without bond after allegedly attempting to engage in sexual acts with an 8-year-old girl. Timothy S. Griesemer was indicted Wednesday, Oct. 23 by a federal grand jury on charges of commercial sex trafficking of a child and inducement of a child to engage in prostitution. According to the complaint, on Oct. 8 Griesemer contacted a woman with whom he was in a “purely sexual” relationship, identified in court documents as CW-1, by text message requesting a girl between 10 and 14 years be brought into their sexual acts. CW-1 contacted the Jerseyville Police Department the next day to report Griesemer’s request. Working with police and a second female informant known by

Food Service Sanitation Course scheduled The Calhoun County Health Department is offering a 15 hour Food Service Sanitation Certification course on Nov. 9 and 23 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an exam following the class on Nov. 23 at the Calhoun County Health Department located at 210 French

Street, Hardin. Two refresher courses will also be offered from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on either day of the 15-hour course dates listed above. The fee for the 15-hour course is $ 90 and the fee for the 5-hour course will be $ 35. (NOTE: fees above do not include the 5 year

OBITUARIES KIMBREL

KEEHNER Eunice Roth Keehner, 92, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born March 10, 1921, near Kampsville, the daughter of John J. and Elizabeth Nordbusch Roth. She married John L. Keehner on Sept. 2, 1940, in Jacksonville and he preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 1994. She is survived by two sons and three daughters, James L. (Maggie) Keehner of Greenville, N.C., Virginia “Ginger” (Robert) Komiskey of Galena, Alice (Bill) Doyle of Tahoe City, Calif., Beth Keehner of Jacksonville and Greg Keehner of Springfield; nine grandchildren, James Lloyd (Amanda) Keehner II, Amy Keehner (Jay) Nelson, Rebecca (Tom) Budd, Robert Keehner, Emily Komiskey (Jason) Getz, Christine Komiskey (Patrick) Busker, Jennifer Komiskey, Mathew Keehner, and Tara Keehner; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, John L. Roth. She was preceded in death by one son, Randall Keehner; and two sisters, Leona Deeder and Margaret Caskey. Mrs. Keehner was a 1938 graduate of Kampsville High School and then attended Lockwood Beauty School. She retired after 70 years as a beautician. She was an active member of Church of Our Saviour, Catholic Daughters of America and Toastmistress. A Memorial Mass was celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Church of Our Saviour. Private burial will be held at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Church of Our Saviour. Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville was in charge of arrangements. Charles J. “Charlie” Church, 90, of Hardin died at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 at his residence. He was born Aug. 22, 1923, in New Burnside, son of the late Charles F. and Ora Reva (Lauderdale) Church. He married Ilene D. (McKenney) Church March 5, 1950, and she survives. A WW II Army veteran, he drove a supply truck in Russia. He worked at Laclede Steel Co. in Alton for 41 years, retiring in 1984. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He love spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was as member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Hardin and Hardin American Legion. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bob (Robin) Church of Pittsfield and Curt Church of Pekin; two daughters, Mary Ellen (Tom) Kamprath of Courtland, Kan., and Linda (Anthony) Gresham of Mozier; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ed Church; and a sister, Helen Gress, both of Hardin; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ripplinger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Hanks-Gress Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, also at the funeral home in Hardin. The Revs R. Ankney and Steve Jacobsen will officiate. Burial will take place in Hardin City Cemetery with full military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hardin Senior Citizens Center, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Calhoun Ambulance.

Betty Jean Kimbrel, 68, of Fieldon died peacefully at 2:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at her home in Fieldon surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in East St. Louis on Dec. 7, 1944, one of four children born to the late Jessie James and Isabelle Marie (Burgess) Newberry. She married Clifford “Cliff” Kimbrel and the two shared many happy years together, raising their five children in New Athens before relocating to rural Fieldon, alongside the waters of the Macoupin Creek, nearly 20 years ago. Betty treasured the time she spent with family and had a natural passion for caring for others that was evident not only in the love she displayed to her family, but also in that which carried through to her work as a CNA at Calhoun-Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she was employed for nine years before her health began to decline. Surviving are her loving husband, Cliff of Fieldon; five children, Edward Kimbrel of Hardin, Dawn Korte of Wood River, Danny Kimbrel of Fieldon, Cora Kimbrel of Wood River and John Kimbrel of Fieldon; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two more on the way; a brother, Jessie Newberry Jr. of New Athens; two sisters, Barbara Schultze and Carolyn Valentine, both of Collinsville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Cody Kimbrel on Sept. 8, 2001; and a brother-inlaw, Erwin Schultze. Per her request cremation rights have been accorded and no services are scheduled. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in care of Crawford Funeral Home. Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.

WIC wants to help families As the nation’s premier public health nutrition program, WIC provides the competitive edge that will give our nation’s future leaders a fair start in life. WIC provides quality nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and education, a monthly food package, and access to maternal, prenatal and pediatric health care services. In 2012, WIC served 8.9 million participants each month through 10,000 clinics nationwide. These participants included 890,000 pregnant women, 588,000 breastfeeding women, 615,000 postpartum women, 2.1 million infants, and 4.7 million children. Numerous studies have shown that pregnant women who participate in WIC have fewer pre-

mature births, fewer low-birth weight babies, and fewer fetal and infant deaths. Infants and children who participate in WIC also benefit greatly. WIC helps ensure infants’ and children’s normal growth, reduces levels of anemia, increases immunization rates, improves access to health care/ social services, and improves diets. WIC packages provide a monthly prescription of nutritious foods, including fruits and vegetables, milk, whole grain cereals, whole wheat bread, tuna, canned and dried beans, peanut butter, cheese, juice, eggs, and formula. The packages are designed to go along with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and established dietary recommen-

dations for infant and children. Pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to the age of 5 are eligible for WIC. They must meet income guidelines, which currently state that the applicants’ income must fall at or below 185 percent of the US poverty Income Guidelines. A family of four, for instance, may have an annual income of up to $43,568 and qualify for the program. CHD holding ‘Cover Your Community Day’ As of Oct. 1, individuals, families and small businesses in Illinois can sign up for quality health coverage through Get Covered Illinois – The Official Health Marketplace by visiting www.GetCoveredIllinois. gov. Through the Marketplace, Illinois residents can get to the right place to shop and compare all of the health

insurance plans offered in the state. On Nov. 2, the Calhoun County Health Department will participate in the “Cover Your Community” day of action, a statewide effort to educate Illinois residents about Get Covered Illinois and the health insurance options available to them. We will be going door-to-door covering topics

such as what types of coverage are offered, how to get coverage, plan costs and financial help, Medicaid, local resources and more. Yoga Classes at Bell's Gym Kick off 2014 with Yoga. Yoga clears the mind and combines strength, flexibility, coordination, and relaxation. Curious? Come to observe or join us for a session. Two new Yoga sessions are scheduled at Bell’s Gym. The first is a

November is just around the corner which means it is getting busy at BCC. We had a wonderful service as new faces are showing signs of being regular faces and the church continues to grow. Those of us at BCC are excited at seeing these wonderful blessings in our church. On Sunday November 3, we will be hosting a Veteran’s Appreciation Service at our church. We certainly would love to have our area veterans to come to our church at 10:45 AM as seek to show our appreciation to the sacrifices and services of the veterans in our area. We also have a few veterans in our church to honor as well. There will be a potluck following the service. On Sunday November 9, we will be having a Family Movie Night. This is a free community event made available to the area. Showing begins at 6:30 PM at the Kampsville School Gymnasium. On Sunday November 17, we will be having a Community Worship Service at the Kampsville Gymnasium. We would love to invite you to attend and feel God’s love, hear God’s truth, see God’s grace, and experience God’s goodness much like we have at BCC. Evangelist Billy Graham said, “A child who is allowed to be disrespectful to his parents will not have true respect for anyone.” For many who have seen me in the areas restaurants, stores, or on the road, you will often find that one of three children are constantly accompanying me. Here are two reasons why. First, by my example, I hope they will learn to show people how to care. Sometimes, they do a better job at it than I do. Recently, the family and I sat with a few of our church members after church one Sunday at the grill down the road from the church. Seated not too far from us was a lovely couple from Roodhouse. I made casual conversation with them and introduced them to the family. We talked for a bit and I got to know them. As we finished our meal and paid, we made our way to the exit. I shook hands with them and invited them to come visit with us whenever they had a chance. All three of my children walked up to this couple that we had never met before this meeting and shook hands with them as well. I saw the eyes of that couple sparkle and a grin from ear to ear. Sometimes it is the little things like that that shows how you care and I want my children to know that. Secondly, we try to teach them to be respectful. Twain Lake. We went to a local restaurant where we ate a delicious meal. As we completed our meal, our youngest of the twins piped up as the waitress walked by, “Excuse me ma’am, may I have a box”. My wife and I looked at each other flabbergasted and marveled at how quickly these absorbent minds take in so much and put into practice. And hey, at least she said “Excuse me, ma’am”. As a family, we try to support our local businesses in the community. There is a nice little restaurant in Hardin that we have had a privilege to eat on a few occasions. The food is delicious and from them I have learned that there is more to salads than just lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, croutons and Thousand Island dressing. It is called Ilona’s. Both Gene and Ilona made us feel as though we were family. At the end of the meal, Ilona brought them a box to keep their leftovers. They remembered and put it into practice a few weeks later on our vacation. We teach them to say “thank you.” We teach them to say “please” and “you’re welcome”. We want them to show respect for others, but our efforts are futile if we are not putting it into practice ourselves. We have a responsibility to teach our children, an effort we must continue should make America and the world a better place to live and make life much better for everyone. Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

The Batchtown Womans Club will be accepting Trick or treators at the Village Hall Halloween night. The Lucky Clovers 4-H Club went hiking last Saturday and enjoyed the day. There was a countywide Auxiliary Meeting in Brussels at the American Legion. Members and Legionaires enjoyed a chicken dinner with all the trimmings. Suzanne Kamp had a busy week, Monday and Tuesday her Grandson Gage stayed with her. Wednesday Suzanne went to Alton for medical tests and met 20 of her classmates at Johnson’s Corner on State Street. She stopped in Jerseyville to see David and Blanche Kamp and had a nice visit. Friday Christine Johnes and she took a trip to St. Charles shopping and looking at fabrics. Saturday Suzanne attended the flea market in Grafton at the Loading Dock and Shopped, while she was there she visited with Karen Friedel and Mary Kay Wieneke who were also browsing through the shops. Suzanne crossed the Brussels Ferry and stopped at Hagen’s Market where her daughter in law, Debbie Kamp was working. Suzanne had a very interesting week. The Lutheran Child and Family Service will host a Pampered Chef fundraiser on November 8th at 3:30 p.m. at their facility. Prizes will be drawn and refreshments served. Those attending are encouraged to bring canned goods, and earn extra chances at the drawing. Irene Wallendorf and daughter Lisa Roth went to the World Series Game in St. Louis to watch the Cardinals play the Red Sox.

Mike Funk also attended the Series on Sunday with friends. The Cardinals lost the Game but the excitement made it a day to remember. Avery, great granddaughter of Delmar and Barb Bick, spent the weekend with them. Barb Bick had a birthday on October 28th. Martha Bick brought her a cake. Happy Birthday Barb! Arlene Brodbeck had a birthday October 21st. She celebrated with her family. Happy Birthday Arlene! Jacob Major waiter at the Fill Inn Station will celebrate his 18th birthday Friday November 1 st. Happy Birthday Jacob! Sam Barczewski was inducted into the National Honor Society at Calhoun High School.. Henry Barczewski celebrated his 5th birthday on October 23rd with a Scooby Doo Party with family and friends at his home. Sam and Henry are the sons of Rosemary and Greg Barczewski of Batchtown, grandsons to Marilyn and the late Bill Klockenkemper of Batchtown, and Eugene and Esther Barczewski of Nashville, IL. The Franciscans of the Tau met for their October meeting at the Hardin office. The OSF members present were: Michelle and Roger Hagen, Mike and Marian Hagen,John Baltisberger, Marcy Klockenkemper, Tom Droste, Mary Ann Bailey, Virginia Breden, and Jan Tucker. The infant, weighing 7 lbs. 10 ozs., has been given the name Greta Sue. Elder child Charlee, age 2. Grandparents are Charles and Judy Burch of Brussels and Greg and Von Woelfel of Kampsville. Great grandparents Dorwin and Sharon Looper and Steve Woelfel, all of Kampsville and Joan and Mac Davis of Tenn. Greatgreat grandmother Helen Sevier. David Titus, son of Gary and Joan Titus of Golden Eagle recently graduated from the U. S. Army Basic Training at Ft. Benning, GA. Attending the ceremony besides his parents and brother Chris were David’s friend Sydney Rohmann, Lonn Grandia and Edward Stevens. David is not stationed at Ft. Gordon in August, GA. Ryan Hagen was honored on his 7th birthday on Saturday evening with a dinner party hosted by his parents Dave and Kara Hagen and sister Emma. It was held at Hagen’s Haunted House on Meppen Lane with many relatives and friends in attendance. Ryan is the grandson of Roy and Barb Hagen of Brussels and Dave and Sandy Gehlbach of Alton. Many more “happy ones” Ryan! Eric Held, who is employed as a driver for Coach Quarters Tour Bus Lines, was a visitor and dinner guest on Tuesday evening of his parents, Bob and Bonnie Held and grandmother Marie Held. Eric had been on tour since the first of June

traveling across the U. S. twice during those 4-1/2 months. I’m sure they all had lots of catching up to do that evening. On Saturday, September 19th Larry and Barb Pohlman and Roy and Barb Hagen, all of Brussels, Larry and Angie Imming of Jerseyville and Lee and Janet Friedel of Bethalto all enjoyed lunch at Geno’s 140 Club in Bethalto. Afterwards they enjoyed various delicious desserts at the home of Lee and Janet and a wonderful afternoon of visiting. I returned Sunday evening after spending 3 days in Missouri. On Friday afternoon I visited with Shelly Scherer and great grandson Noah Keppler in O’Fallon. Afterwards I drove to Chesterfield to spend the week-end with Trevor and Cyndi Axford, Madison and Mackenzie. On Friday evening we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Longhorn Steak House and then home to watch the World Series. Saturday was spent shopping at Chesterfield Mall and in Chesterfield Valley and at lunch time quite a surprise to see Andy and Cindy (Held) DiCarlo and Jackie dining at the same restaurant, so we had a nice visit with them. Since Trevor knows I love Chinese food he surprised us that evening with various entrees from P. F. Chang’s, which we enjoyed while watching Game 4 of the World Series. The Calhoun High School volleyball team ended its regular season with back-to-back wins in non-conference tuneups Tuesday, Oct. 22, and Wednesday, Oct. 23, its last matches before begininng play at the Hardin Class 1A Regional. A 25-23, 25-22 win at Payson Seymour, followed by a 25-12, 25-22 victory at Jersey Community High School the following night, gave Calhoun a 26-3-1 record entering the postseason. The top-seeded Lady Warriors faced No. 4 Griggsville-Perry in a regional semifinal Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The nearly one-week break between Calhoun's regular season finale and postseason opener was a welcome one for head coach Ann Gilman, who wasn't worried abour her team losing a step during the time off. "We have Grace [Baalman] sick, Maddie [Baalman] has knee problems, Allie [Hurley] has tendonitis in her shoulder and Kassidy [Klocke] rolled her ankle," Gilman said. "Needless to say, we're taking a night off. But we were still able to play like we did that first game [against Jersey]." Calhoun overwhelmed the Lady Panthers in the match's opening game, using a 12-1 run midway through to take a 20-9 lead. The Lady Warriors trailed by as many as six points in the second game, but came back to tie it at 18-18 thanks in part to two kills, one block and one ace by Emma Baalman. She finished with seven kills to lead Calhoun. "Emma plays with so much adrenaline. She's everybody's dream player," Gilman said. "She's all over the court and you never know what she's going to do with the ball. That's

Warriors cap football season with big win Maag earns all-PCC The Calhoun High School football team ran for 553 yards and snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 69-24 win against the Illinois School for the Deaf Friday in Hardin. Senior running back Joe Bick gained 193 yards and scored three touchdowns in his final game with the Warriors (2-7). He scored twice in the first quarter, helping Calhoun to a 19-6 lead through the opening frame. Junior Brandon Fraley finished with 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yarder to begin the scoring less than three minutes in. He added two second-quarter scores — from 80 and 27 yards out as the Warriors built a 48-18 halftime lead. Sophomore Blake Booth was the third Calhoun player to reach triple-digit rushing yards, totaling 119 and scoring a pair of touchdowns on runs of 48 and 54 yards. Levi Zirkelbach and Sam Barczewski added additional touchdown runs for the Warriors. The Illinois School for the Deaf's Jordan Richie led all rushers, gaining 258 yards and scoring four touchdowns for the Tigers.

Brussels High School sophomore Faith Maag was named to the all-tournament volleyball team at the Pike County Conference Tournament Thursday in Meredosia. The Lady Raiders ended their run at the PCC Tournament with a matchup against Pittsfield Thursday, with the Lady Saukees winning a 12-25, 25-20, 15-10 decision. Brussels went winless through tournament play, but took three of its five PCC opponents to three games. The Lady Raiders lost a tight 25-21, 25-23 decision against Pleasant Hill Tuesday, Oct. 22, before falling to eventual league champion Western 25-16, 15-17 and Griggsville-Perry 25-21, 18-25, 15-10 Wednesday, Oct. 23. Capping its first season as a varsity program and making its first appearance in the IHSA postseason, Brussels was edged by Mount Olive 25-19, 25-8 in the opening game of the Mount Olive Class 1A Regional Monday.
