‘Billy Bob's Gags to Riches’ airs on Discovery Channel Jan. 28 By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald A national audience will tune into a show set in Calhoun County Jan. 28 at 9 p.m. on Discovery featuring a local business owner and his family. Jonah White, owner of Billy Bob Products in Hardin, said he pitched the show idea to seven networks around two years ago after filming the sizzler himself, adding he is excited the show, “Billy Bob’s Gags to Riches,” will finally make it to air. “People are going bonkers over it. Everyone that has seen it has said that it’s awesome and different than anything else that’s been on television,” White said. “I’m excited because I’d like them to turn me loose and just start following me with cameras. You don’t need to act. My life is crazy and I keep it that way.” The main objective of the show was to provide an authentic look at his life and Calhoun County. Rather than stringing together scripted elements of people portrayed as strange or odd, White said he set out to make people think differently, because he does. After graduating from Missouri State in 1994 with a degree in biology, he lived in a cave in rural Calhoun County for nearly a year, pondering what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. White didn’t want to wear a suit and work a regular job every day, but it wasn’t until he met Rich Bailey, who introduced him to a pair of fake teeth, that he realized what the future could hold. During a Missouari State football game, he saw Bailey – with horrendous teeth – flirting with women in the stands of the game. Later, Bailey was introduced to White, who was taken aback by Bailey’s rather immaculate teeth. Confused, White asked him how his teeth changed so

THE

rapidly, and Bailey presented him with the first pair of Billy Bob Teeth he made in dental school. White said he knew it was a million-dollar idea at that time, and ran with it. He now owns a business where he sells gag toys and other products around the world. White said part of the show will focus on his lifestyle while the other will aim to show what it is like to be an entrepreneur. “It’s different than anything that’s been on television. There’s a level of country and redneck just because of where I live, and that is very welltaken right now,” White said. “What I was interested in was a show that was authentic and real, and that will portray my life and how my family and I live. But it would show how tough it is being an entrepreneur, and show that you can make it and it’s a lot of work, and the things that can go wrong.” With all of the other shows on television involving hillbillies or rednecks, White said he wanted to show a real person and his business, showcasing the creation of ideas and inventions. Living on a property with an aviary, a pet swan, a pet black bear and a bobcat, White’s life is anything but normal, and he hopes his show will prove to people they don’t have to act like somebody else to be successful. “You don’t have to sell out who you are,” White said. “If you try hard enough and you’re successful, you can make it and be you. I don’t possess a huge number of aspects about me that are super human that other people couldn’t do. The things I’ve done, I think other people could do, too, if that’s what they go for.” “Billy Bob’s Gags to Riches” will air on Discovery Channel at 9 p.m. Jan. 28 after “Moonshiners.” The show is rated TV-14.

Two Rivers holds lunch and learn program Friday By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald The Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge will host the second of its Lunch and Learn events Jan. 24 at 12 p.m. after which participants will go on a guided nature walk. The Lunch and Learn program is not new to the national refuge, but does provide educational opportunities for those interested in learning more about the public land and the animals which inhabit it. Courtney Solum, Two Rivers park ranger, said those who attend the event will sit down to lunch with Two Rivers personnel for lunch during which they will talk about some of the wildlife on the refuge. “Anyone is welcome to join us. Just bring a lunch, and we’ll sit down – some staff from the refuge and whoever comes to participate – we’ll sit down and have lunch,” Solum said, noting the four Lunch and Learns are typically scheduled in January and February. The park ranger said each week aims to cover a different topic or look more closely at a specific animal. She said what is taught depends on the participant's interests, but

New Illinois law grounds drone harassment By ANNEttE MARSHALL Calhoun News-Herald Among the new laws which took effect at the beginning of 2014 is a law designed to protect hunters and fishers from interference from aerial drones. HB1652, sponsored by State Representative Adam Brown (R-Champaign), and Senator Daniel Bliss (D-Evanston), was filed on Feb. 14, 2013, and signed by Governor Quinn Aug. 16, 2013. The bill amended the wildlife Criminal Code of 2012, making it a Class A misdemeanor to “use a drone in a way that interferes with another person’s lawful taking of wildlife or aquatic life.” While the law does not specifically name the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization (PETA), it was the

rollout of the PETA “Air Angel” drones that had many hunters concerned about their privacy. Avid hunter and Jersey County resident Chuck Hoffmann said he was aware of the drone issue and of the new law. “This new law prohibiting drone use to harass hunters, as any other law, is only as good as the ethics of the people honoring the law,” he said. The drones, which retail for $324.99 at petacatalog.com, are touted as a tool to help protect animals from illegal hunting activities. “Using your hobby drone, you can collect instant to-your-phone video footage of hunters engaging in illegal activity, such as drinking while in possession of a firearm, injuring animals and failing to pursue them,

and illegally using spotlights, feed lures, and other nasty but common hunting tricks. Your amateur footage can be used to alert game wardens and other authorities to who is doing what to animals,” states the description on the website. Footage collected by the drones can be streamed live via the Internet, or uploaded to the Air Angels page on PETA.org. Hoffmann was less than thrilled about the idea of someone capturing surveillance footage of his hunting activities “What will these radicals think of next?” he said. Hoffman, a former Illinois gun safety instructor, added he has “no respect” for those sportsmen who choose to break the law, but guessed that violators were only (See, Drones, A2)

Solum said the focus Jan. 24 will be great horned owls, an owl known for the distinct tuffs on its head which make it appear to have ears. “They’re nesting this time of the year. [We’ll talk about] what they’re eating right now,” Solum said, “and how the refuge contributes to that. Depending on the animal and the habitat they prefer, the refuge probably has many benefits for them, and that’s why they would choose to live at the refuge.” After an educational lunch, Solum said visitors will be guided on a tour of the refuge where they may see the animal they discussed along with other wildlife. Participants will be guided down one of the refuge’s many paths, she added. One of the paths was just named Jan. 10 during the refuge’s open house which Solum said was well attended. “It was better than I expect with the ferry closed,” Solum said. “We had a very good turn out.” The naming of the trail involved numerous participants who submitted their ideas for the path’s name. JCH looking to get out of baby delivery business By ROBERt LYONS Calhoun News-Herald By summer, there may be no more babies being born in Jersey County, at least not at a hospital. Jersey Community Hospital is looking to discontinue maternity services, but first must get the approval of the Health Facilities Planning Board. The decision to get out of the baby delivery business is a disappointment to Marci Osborn, a Carlinville resident who gave birth at JCH on Jan. 12. “It’s heartbreaking, really,” Osborn said. “With Carlinville not having an OB department, pretty well all the small towns around will have no OB departments in their hospitals if Jerseyville closes down.” JCH administrators, past and present, cite waning usage of the department, as well as budget shortfalls for the decision to close the maternity wing. Hospital CEO John Wade said, in a press release, the hospital went from delivering more than 200 babies in 2008 to just 130 in 2013. “The average daily census in the six-bed unit was less than one.” Wade said in the statement. “We’ve been fortunate to preserve the quality and intimacy for our patients as long as we have. This is not a move we wanted to make, but with falling volumes the amount of subsidy required to run the service is not sustainable.” Between the OGBYN clinic and the maternity services offered at the hospital, JCH lost around $1.4 million last year, according to Community Relations Director Jen Bell. “I believe there are a lot of hospitals looking at their maternity services. I think where the healthcare industry is going is kind of unknown right now,” Bell said. “We don’t know what’s going to happen with reimbursement, and we don’t know what cuts the state and federal levels are going to make.” The CEO said competition with larger regional hospitals put JCH’s maternity offerings at a disadvantage. Former JCH administrator Larry Bear said in a statement from the hospital that provisions of the Affordable Care Act, as well as failure to receive Medicare payments, have put hospital offerings in a bind. He called it “the perfect storm,” and stated government interference is “oppressive and getting worse.” Still, Bear said he’s never been satisfied with the number of residents using JCH’s maternity services. “The percentage of those choosing JCH for birthing services never reached over 40 percent from the service area,” Bear said in the hospital’s press release. “It’s now less than 30 percent. Like everything in a small town economy, we either support it or lose it.” Osborn said JCH came highly recommended, and that she was very satisfied with her experience. ““The father of the baby, his sister went to Jerseyville, and they all told me that it was a really good hospital,” (See, JCH, A2)

Wins Two-Rivers Trail name contest

Mady Nolte holds a certificate of appreciation for submitting the winning trail name in the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge trail naming contest. Mady’s trail name submission “Wildlife Haven Trail” was voted as the winning name for the new trail developed in the summer of 2013. Mady was recognized at the Winter Open House held at the refuge on Saturday, Jan. 11.

LCCC offering Pell Grants to university graduates Returning students who have previous degrees may soon be eligible for Federal Pell Grants to help pay for career retraining or certificate programs at Lewis and Clark Community College. While previously, students who already had degrees were not eligible for Federal Pell Grants, and had to rely on loans, scholarships or paying for school out of pocket, the U.S. Department of Education is currently conducting research to determine whether this new eligibility can increase their employability and/or decrease federal student loan debt. L&C has been chosen as a pilot site for this initiative, which will help students who already have bachelor’s or associate degrees, but who are unemployed or underemployed, pay for and return to school to pursue a new degree or certificate program. During the pilot program, randomly selected students will be able to receive grants to cover up to one year toward completing their new degree or certificate, which must be earned in one to two years. “There’s now a chance for many students to receive federal grant

funding to further their education and increase their employability through this Federal Pell program. Lewis and Clark’s participation in this initiative will help provide the necessary data for the U.S. Department of Education to determine if awarding the Federal Pell Grant to students meeting these criteria if viable,” said Angela Weaver, director of Financial Aid at Lewis and Clark. Eligible students will be randomly chosen for this pilot program by the Department of Education and must plan to begin their program at Lewis and Clark any time beginning in 2014. “We’re pleased that we were selected by the Department of Education to take part in this experimental program. This experiment will provide a Pell grant to several students who were not eligible in the past,” said Kent Scheffel, Vice President of Enrollment at L&C. “We’re hoping the experiment will prove successful and all eligible students will have the opportunity to receive funding in the future.” For more information, please contact the Financial Aid office at (618) 468-2223.

Solum said Wildlife Haven Trail offers more to visitors than the others because it takes them through different habitats for animals to live. “We’re always telling our visitors we have two trails and they’re both very different,” Solum said. “One goes through the prairie and then the new one goes through the woods and by the ponds, too, so [visitors] enjoy having a variety of habitats to walk through.” Different animal activity can be seen depending on the trails people take, the park ranger said, adding refuge staff have noticed an increase in muskrat activity at the pond where the rodents have

(Continued from A1) comprise two to three percent of hunters. PETA does not seem to be discouraged by HB1652. “The Illinois law doesn’t affect PETA’s plans since its hobby drone program is intended not to interfere with wildlife or hunters but to capture video footage of hunters engaging in common illegal activity,” PETA’s Director of Animal Law, Jared Goodman, said in a statement. “All this law does is highlight the fact that hunters and fishers have something to hide from the public.” Current FAA rules dictate drones must be operated less than 400 feet above ground, in daylight conditions only and must be within the operators line of sight. Those rules could severely hinder an operator’s attempt to legally gather footage of a hunter of fisherman that the drone operator may consider in violation of state hunting and fishing rules. Hoffman, though, wonders about what would happen to an over-zealous drone operator breaking FAA rules while obtaining aerial footage. “Who then will police PETA’s violations?” he said While the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), could not speculate on how aerial footage from the PETA drones would have been handled if the law had not passed making the drones illegal, hunters in Illinois

built a hut. Though the structure is quite normal for the muskrats, Solum said the construction is different as it is made from lilypads rather than different types of grasses. “It’s really neat. It’s different than most that you would see,” Solum said. following rules and regulations can breathe a little easier knowing that hunter harassment is prohibited in Illinois. “There are hunter harassment statues on the books, that prohibit folks from interfering with legal hunting activities,” IDNR spokesman Tim Schweizer said. Schweizer also issued a reminder for those considering breaking the rules. “When our officers receive a tip, any tip, on illegal activity… they will follow up the best they can,” he said. And while the law states drones cannot be used to “interfere with another person’s lawful taking of wildlife or aquatic life,” there still could potentially be some eyes in the sky. This law “…does not apply to actions performed by authorized employees of the Department of Natural Resources, duly accredited officers of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, or other peace officers if the actions are authorized by law and are necessary for the performance of their official duties.” The law also goes on to state that, “… landowners, tenants, or lease holders exercising their legal rights to the enjoyment of land, including, but not limited to, farming and restricting trespass,” are also exempt. Complete FAA regulations on drones can be viewed at http:// www.faa.gov.

JCH (Continued from A1) she said. “I liked it. I thought everybody was very professional and very nice.” The hospital’s maternity department is a six-bed unit. The department has been part of the hospital since JCH’s founding in August 1954. In 2005 the maternity wing received a complete renovation. Bear said there could be some transitioning and temporary unemployment for some of the 15 to 20 nurses that staff the maternity department, if the Health Facilities Planning Board approves the discontinuation of services. “We would hope they could be absorbed in other areas at the hospital, but that’s always a concern,” Bear said. “Those ladies have been

there a long time and have done a great job.” Bell said the planning board will factor the volume of use, finances and distance to similar services when making its determination. If it agrees with the hospital’s request, it will issue a certificate of need. “Basically, from my understanding, this board looks to see if there’s a need in that community to justify having a service,” Bell said. “With discontinuing a service they would look to see if it needs to be discontinued, and how does it affect the people.” A decision on the fate of the maternity services department is expected to be made at the April 22 state board meeting.

Valentine's Day is a beloved tradition for many couples, but it doesn't have to stretch your budget.

File Photo

Save money this Valentine's Day Valentine's Day can be a joyous time for couples, but it can also be expensive. A bouquet of roses and some new jewelry capped off with a night out on the town adds up, and many men and women find themselves looking for ways to celebrate Valentine's Day without breaking the bank. While a night in is always a great way to save some money, couples can still spend a night away from home without straining the wallet. The following are a few ways cost-conscious couples can save some money this Valentine's Day. n Avoid prix fixe. Many restaurants offer prix fixe menus on Valentine's Day. These menus reduce the amount of options at a couples' disposal, and couples might be forced to pay for several courses when they would prefer just an entree. If cost is a concern, pick a restaurant that offers a full menu instead of prix fixe. This allows you to avoid potentially costly appetizers and desserts while still affording you the opportunity to share a night out together. n Avoid going out on Valen-

tine's Day. Another way to save money is to go out a day or so before or after Valentine's Day instead of on the holiday itself. Many restaurants are fully booked for dinner on Valentine's Day, so you might be forced to choose a restaurant that stretches your budget. It should be easy to book a reservation a night before or after the holiday, and doing so allows you to choose a restaurant that's more aligned with your budget. n Shop ahead of time. It's customary to exchange gifts with your significant other on Valentine's Day, but it might be difficult to find a good deal on a gift if you wait until the last minute. Rather than procrastinating, shop for a gift well in advance of the holiday. Because of the proximity of Valentine's Day to the holiday season, you might be able to find a gift when shopping for the holidays. The holiday shopping season is known for its great deals, so look for something you can save until mid-February. If you go this route, just make sure the gift you buy will still be eligible to be returned or exchanged if need be. Even if you wait until after

the holiday season to find a gift for your valentine, the earlier you start shopping the more time you have to comparison shop and hunt for a deal. n Consider a picnic. A day or night away from home doesn't have to be spent at an expensive restaurant or on a romantic getaway. If the weather allows, consider a picnic in the park. Cook up your valentine's favorite meal and bring along a bottle of wine and then enjoy some time together under the warm sun at a fraction of the cost of a more traditional Valentine's Day date. n Forgo roses for a rose bush. Roses are a staple of Valentine's Day, but they can also bust a budget. Instead of an expensive bouquet, tell your loved one you will plant him or her a rose bush instead once the weather warms up. This frees up some money in the short term, and once the rose bush blooms this will prove one Valentine's gift that keeps on giving. Valentine's Day is a beloved tradition for many couples, but it doesn't have to stretch your budget. =

Caring for the caregivers By BoB CroSSen Calhoun News-Herald Caring for others helps make the world a better place, but it can also take a toll on the caregivers. Thankfully, the Area Agency on Aging for Lincolnland helps provide programs to ease the burden. Jersey County Health Department offers such programs. “As caregivers, it’s just such a hard job. They can easily get sick themselves because they’re working so hard to care for their loved one,” Karen Schroeder, an RN and BS who has been with JCHD for more than 30 years, said, adding caregivers can also suffer from increased stress, putting a strain on their well-being. “It’s real important that they, number one, take care of themselves so that they can do the job for their loved one.” A news release from JCHD points

out caregiving can be providing emotional or physical assistance to anyone in need, whether it be an older relative, neighbor or a cross-country friend. According to information from JCHD, studies have shown 25 percent of households in the U.S. are involved in caring for an older person. The health department regularly fields phone calls from people with questions about how to care for family members or others in need, and the Family Caregiver Resource Center has plenty of literature to aid those people. “So they could call in, and describe what their problems are, what their needs are, and we have a huge resource book that we can give them information of where to go and get additional resources and help that they need,” Schroeder said. The services offered by the center are meant to enrich the lives of both the caregiver and the one being cared for.

One such service is the respite program, in which a caregiver over the age of 60 may request a nurse to care for their loved one while they do something for themselves, buy groceries or do other errands. Keeping the caregiver’s stress low is imperative to their health and in turn the health of the person for whom they are caring. The state grant-funded operation also accepts monetary contributions for its services, but does not require them. Those interested in helping with the program or have a skill to offer to the health department may call or visit about how to aid the program voluntarily. Those looking for assistance in caregiving or interested in the respite program are encouraged to contact the Jersey County Health Department at (618) 498-9565, or by visiting its location at 1307 State Hwy. 109, Jerseyville.

Warning signs of Alzheimer's disease Few families are fortunate enough to say they have not been impacted by Alzheimer's disease. A progressive, degenerative disease of the brain, Alzheimer's impairs thinking and memory, accounting for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases according to the Alzheimer's Association. In 2011, 59-year-old Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history and a beloved figure on the campus of the University of Tennessee, revealed that she had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. That announcement opened the eyes of men and women across the country, who might otherwise never have known that dementia could strike so early or to someone who seemed as healthy as Summitt, who vowed to continue coaching despite the diagnosis. Because it can strike men and women even if they aren't elderly, it's important to know these warning signs of Alzheimer's, courtesy of the Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. n Memory loss that disrupts daily life.

Memory loss is one of the most common signs of Alzheimer's. This is especially so if men and women forget things that happened very recently, which can negatively impact their daily lives. Additional signs include forgetting important dates and events; asking for the same information over and over again; or relying on memory aides such as reminder notes or even family members for things individuals could once remember on their own. n Difficulty planning. Some people might start to exhibit difficulty following a plan or working with numbers, be it following a recipe or paying the monthly bills. Concentration is often difficult for those exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer's. n Disorientation with regards to time and/or place. Nearly everyone has had momentary lapses where they forget what time it is or what day it is. But such lapses are not momentary for people with Alzheimer's, who might even get lost on their own street and not remember how to get home. n Trouble understanding images

and spatial relationships. Some people with Alzheimer's have difficulty reading, judging distance or determining color or contrast. For example, a person with Alzheimer's might walk past a mirror and not realize he or she is the person in the mirror. n New problems with words in speaking or writing. People with Alzheimer's might experience trouble holding or joining a conversation. An example is stopping in the middle of a conversation and having no idea how to continue. They might also struggle with vocabulary, often having trouble finding the right word to express what they're thinking. n Changes in mood and personality. People with Alzheimer's might experience mood swings for no apparent reason and can become anxious, confused, depressed, fearful, or suspicious. Acting out of character might also be indicative of Alzheimer's. More information about Alzheimer's disease is available at www.alz.org and www.alzheimer.ca.

WHAT'S GOING ON BETWEEN THE RIVERS ■ Blessings from Belleview

by Chris Thomas ■ 217-734-9012 them. Our church was taking on a little extra shine that day. Downstairs, my wonderful wife was cleaning, restocking, and reorganizing the kitchen that just one week before had three to four inches of water. Things were slowly returning to normal. Tables were set up and chairs were placed in preparation for potluck for the next day. We wanted our church to look its best. There was certain pleasantness in the aroma that permeated both downstairs and the sanctuary upstairs. It was the smell of clean. I watched the lights glisten off the shine of the wooden knee rail that surrounds the altar as I stood in the back and looked at the handiwork of our children. I notice the brightness of the Sunday School rooms after replacing light bulbs. I did not know who was coming on Sunday but I wanted the church to look its best. We were no satisfied with good enough. In life, it should always be about our best. Some are content with good enough but making a difference requires our best. In life I have learned that good enough may help me graduate from school but it does not guarantee entrance into a great college. Good enough may help me keep a job but it does not guarantee raises and promotions. Good enough may get us on the basketball team but it does not guarantee a starting position. To make a difference in the world around us and to help achieve success, good enough is not enough. It requires that we give our best effort. As we left that Saturday afternoon and the sunlight faded behind the clouds, I knew that with the work of my wife, three children, and the church member who helped, our church was looking its best. It was ready for Sunday. And walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. (Ephesians 5:2)

by Carol Sue Carnes ■ 883-2333 Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Ennis III who were married on Saturday in a private ceremony at Point Pleasant Winery in Golden Eagle. A reception and dance for family and friends followed that evening at the Brussels American Legion Hall. Mrs. Ennis is the former Sharon Tepen of Meppen, daughter of Alan Tepen and Mary Ann Tepen, and granddaughter of Alfred and Mildred Kronable. George Kuhn celebrated his 87th birthday over the week-end at a dinner at Mel’s Riverdock Restaurant in Hardin. In addition to his wife Irma, were his children (Emil, Charlie, Fred, Cindy, Florence and Paul) and their families, along with Kenny and Sandi Odelehr, Vicki Nation and Melinda Pohlman and their families and a few close friends. Everyone enjoyed the delicious meal and evening together. Many more “happy and healthy ones” George. On Saturday morning a bridal shower and tea was held at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Hardin in honor of Mariah Bizallion. The event, attended by family members and friends, was hosted by her bridesmaids. Mariah will become the bride of Drew Eilerman on Saturday, March 1. Drew is the son of Dan and Stacey Eilerman of Carrollton and granddaughter of Fred and Carol Sue Pohlman of Golden Eagle and Betty (and the late Jerome) Eilerman of Batchtown. Among those attending from this area were Carol Sue Pohlman, Barb Pohlman and Mary Lee Rose. My dinner guests and visitors on Sunday evening were Everette and Dorothy Meyer and Marie Held. Afterwards we enjoyed a wonderful evening of visiting and reminiscing. Getting together after the holidays has

been an enjoyable tradition of ours for many years. On Thursday evening, Jan. 16, the Brussels Eagles hosted Parents’ Night. Eighth graders on the team are Wesley Baalman, son of Brian and Christina Baalman, Logan Kinder, son of Keith and Rachelle Kinder, Scott Kiel son of Jerry Kiel and Robyn Kiel, Reese Kiel, son of Kevin and Tammy Kiel, Tony Rose, son of Greg and Flo Rose and Andrew Hoemmen, son of Jasen and Mary Hoemmen. In addition cheerleaders honored were Lesie Katzenberger, daughter of Hank and Sheila Katzenberger and Erika Odelehr, daughter of Jim and Cathy Odelehr. Dylan Droege celebrated his sixth birthday on Sunday with a party hosted by his parents Don and Jessica Droege and sister Jayleigh at their home in Batchtown. Besides his grandparents Paul and Jeanette Droege and Larry and Mary Kay Wieneke, other relatives and friends were present to him his celebrate. Many more “happy ones” Dylan. The Golden Eagle and Brussels Ferry’s are still not operating due to ice in the rivers, so once again everyone is content in staying home and not much news to report. Birthday greetings this week to my niece Kathy Carey, also George Kuhn, Bonnie Held, Heather Simon, Dylan Droege, Dennis Johnes, Kory Pohlman, Cole Bick, Carol Stepanek, Lois Ann Smith, Renee Ballard, Nancy Moennig and all other celebrating their natal day at this time. Happy Anniversary to Bill and Joyce Schulte, Lonnie and Loretta Hattemar, Jeff and Paula Schleeper and all other couples celebrating a wedding anniversary this week.

■ Kampsville News by Millie Schumann ■ 653-4426 Faithful readers, I am so sorry that I don’t have a column in each weeks News, but deadline for news to be at Calhoun News Office has changed from early Tuesday morning to early Monday morning. This means that I have to write the news Sunday nights, and after a week of trying to do my job for the Village, and keep my house with a path to walk through, I really am not up to writing a column. I promise to do my best and keep you up to date on what’s going on in Kampsville and in the Schumann mansion. You really haven’t missed much, because of the cold, snow and ice. The early part of January, I was not out of the house for ten days. I didn’t want to go out and get a cold or the flu. Well, that didn’t work, on the 5th day I came down with the flu so I was housebound for another five days. Finally ventured out and went to Mass. Actually was able to attend Town Board Meeting on the14th, and on he 15th I worked from 1p.m. until 7 p.m. then I was down until I went to Siteman Cancer Center for blood work and scan to see if my what my cancer is up to. I go Tuesday to see my cancer doctor to get results of the scan. All fingers crossed, PLEASE.

Happy belated birthday to my favorite carpet cleaner, Brad Macauly. Be glad when you get moved to Kampsville. I will have someone to call if I need help, and Redeye is not around. And, don’t forget I want to be your first supper guest. Steph Halsey, whose wedding is March 15, was honored with a bridal shower by her bridesmaids, Lindsey Halsey, Sami Halsey and Lindsey Turner, and flower girl, her niece Miss Reagan Clendenny. Master Hayden Taul, her nephew, is ring bearer. Can’t wait to see him in his tux. Everyone attending the shower wore something relating to Las Vegas. I, even, bought a boa and some big ugly pink earrings, and was lucky enough to find a dress in my closet that fit. She received many useful gifts, and several picture frames, which she was happy to receive for her wedding pictures. See you March 15, Steph. With the river frozen and ferry not running, getting out of town has not been too easy. Seems like every time you try to use the Hardin Bridge, it is up waiting on a barge. Not too much fun. And how was your week??? See you next week.

There is nothing more enjoyable than to see the smiling face of children who come to our church. What a tremendous privilege to have 22 children in church this past Sunday. We also had the highest attendance since early December. We are thankful for the opportunities given to us to minister and to serve. This past week I had the privilege of enjoying a few cups of coffee with one of my readers. I really enjoyed it and will gladly meet any of my readers for a cup of coffee. Simply give me a call! This past Thursday I was invited to Barefoot Landing by Erika Harold to participate in her town hall there. I have met Erika Harold before and she is a tremendous young lady who was actually Miss America in 2003. As we move forward into 2014, we look forward to seeing how else we can serve our community. We look forward to seeing how we can serve you. The five of us spent most of the afternoon at the church organizing the chaos that was formed from our water leak from the week before. Another precious member of our church who cleans the church also joined us. I moved books and papers and tables and chairs back to their original locations. I neatly organized all of the paper products as I transported them from upstairs to downstairs. It was the most I have been up and down stairs in one day for as long as I can remember. My legs hurt in places I did not know exist. I am sure my little basketball shape deflated just a tad. Our three children wanted to help. They each were given a cleaning rag and were shown how to wipe down the pews. As I organized one of the rooms in preparation for a new Sunday School class, I took a breather to watch them excitedly clean. They wiped down pews, walls, windows, chairs, piano; anything they reached got wiped down. You could see the little smudges of furniture polish from the rags on the window and I chuckled as the lady who cleaned our church wiped the windows down behind

Preach the Gospel Saint Francis is said to have told his followers, paraphrasing our Lord, to preach the gospel everywhere you go, with words if necessary. While this is probably a misattribution, the sentiment is certainly worth bearing in mind. That is, should we not preach the gospel with our actions as much as with our words? Indeed, when deeds and words are not in harmony, people mistrust the words and consider the "preacher" to be a hypocrite. We should be as concerned with our actions as with our words, at least insofar as we hold ourselves up as moral exemplars. And most of us are called to be moral exemplars,

whether we want this role or not. If you are a parent, you are expected to be a moral example to your children. Most professions are expected to set an example; we expect preachers, teachers, doctors, pharmacists, bankers, and even athletes to adhere to a high moral code. Just to be a decent human being we must adhere to a high moral code of conduct. So, we should preach the gospel everywhere we go with good moral actions, and don't worry about the words. – Christopher Simon

It has been a banner year for wildlife enthusiasts as scores of bald eagles have been spotted soaring overhead in the river bend area. Known as being a winter refuge for the birds, the eagle hot spot houses the second largest population in the continental United States. This surge in population is believed to be caused by the recent harsh winter weather which produces ideal river conditions for the birds. The arrival of the bald eagle also leads locals to anticipate a banner year for the Bald Eagle Festival at Pere Marquette State Park. The Bald Eagle Festival will take place on Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pere Marquette Lodge in Grafton. The historic Lodge is located within Pere Marquette State Park which is known for its scenic outlooks, hiking trails, edu-

SPORTS Lady Warriors stay perfect in WIVC Calhoun News-Herald

B8

Wednesday, January 22, 2014 Hardin, Illinois

SAm ELLIoTT Calhoun News-Herald The Calhoun High School girls basketball team took a big step in the right direction toward repeating as Western Illinois Valley Conference champions with a 58-45 win against rival Carrollton Friday at Carrollton High School. The Lady Warriors and Lady Hawks both entered the key league matchup with 4-0 records within conference play, but Grace Baalman did more than enough to help keep Calhoun perfect in the WIVC. The 6-foot-2 freshman scored a game-high 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting and added seven rebounds on Carrollton's court. "Grace is a gamer. She did a great job for us and we had to keep on trying to get her the ball on the low block," Lady Warriors head coach Aaron Baalman said. "Grace just has the tendency to play at another level against quality teams. As a team, we did a nice job looking to get her the ball." Grace Baalman totaled nine points in the first quarter and sophomore Emma Baalman scored six of her nine within the opening eight minutes, but the Lady Hawks matched Calhoun basket for basket and the teams were tied 15-15 entering the second quarter.

"With not having a game in two weeks, we were expecting a sluggish start. The girls did a good job of grinding it out there in the first quarter," coach Baalman said. "We were a little dead on our legs, but the girls got their feet under themselves, they did a good job executing the game plan and we just used our size to our advantage." The Lady Warriors (16-2, 5-0 WIVC) pulled ahead with a 14-3 run in the final four minutes before halftime and led by a 34-21 margin at the break. Sophomore Kassidy Klocke hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter to help give Calhoun momentum. She finished with seven points and a game-best 13 rebounds. Carrollton shrunk its deficit to as little as six points in the third quarter and the Lady Warriors led by eight at 43-35 heading into the fourth. Sophomore Sydney White and Grace Baalman scored on a pair of buckets inside and Calhoun kept the Lady Hawks scoreless through the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Carrollton cut Calhoun's lead to single digits one final time with a 3-pointer with 4:58 remaining, but Baalman answered for the Lady Warriors with an and-one play at the other end that made it a 12-point game again. "We strung a couple baskets together, played some good defense

and our girls just made some good decisions down the stretch," coach Baalman said. "All the credit goes to them." Calhoun has league games against Greenfield-Northwestern, Routt and West Central remaining this season — this first of which coming at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Northwestern High School. The Lady Warriors are the No. 2 seed at this season's Lady Hawk Invitational. The 40th annual edition of the tournament begins Saturday at Carrollton High School. Calhoun faces No. 10 seed Granite City at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. That game's winner will play either No. 7 North Greene or the No. 15-seeded Carrollton junior varsity squad at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. The two losers between those four teams will meet at 8 p.m. Monday. selliott@campbellpublications.net Carmen Ensinger/Calhoun News-Herald

Fourth-straight win brings Brussels consolation championship at Classic

Calhoun finishes 2-2 at Winchester tourney

SAm ELLIoTT Calhoun News-Herald

A consolation championship at the 20th annual Lady Spartan Classic came along with the Brussels High School girls basketball team's fourth-straight win Saturday in White Hall. The Lady Raiders (11-8) capped their stay at the North Greene High School tournament with a 64-51 win against Beardstown Saturday in the consolation title game. Brussels turnovers allowed the Lady Tigers to keep the game close throughout the first half. The Lady Raiders led 27-24 at halftime, but took better care of the ball in the second half and pulled away for the win. "That was a good game and we looked better than we have the past couple weeks," Brussels head coach Steve Schulte said. "We had a lull there where you could tell we weren't practicing much or playing a lot, but we really came out well this last week." Baylee Kiel totaled a game-high 23 points and added nine rebounds, five assists and as many steals to lead Brussels past Beardstown. The Lady Raiders freshman was named to the Classic's all-tournament team after averaging 22 points per game through Brussels' four games in White Hall. Junior Marisa Kuhn added 19 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Alexa Pikesley chipped in nine points, six assists and five steals for the Lady Raiders Saturday. "[Kuhn] had her best game yet," Schulte said. "She flipped the switch. That's what I expected out of her all year and I'm hoping that's a good sign for her going forward into the Carrollton tournament." Brussels is the No. 9 seed at the 16-team 40th annual Lady Hawk Invitational and will face No. 1 seed Civic Memorial in the first round at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Carrollton High School. The Lady Raiders will face either No. 8 Marquette or the No. 16-seeded West Central junior varsity squad in their second game in Carrollton. The two first-round losers will meet in a consolation quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Monday while the winner will face off in a championship quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Carrollton High School. The Warriors found themselves among the eight teams playing on the 92nd annual Winchester Invitational Tournament's final day, but the Calhoun High School boys basketball team was edged by North Greene 68-56 in the consolation championship game Saturday in Winchester. Calhoun (8-5) hung with North Greene's up-tempo offense and faced just a 35-30 halftime deficit, but the Spartans pulled away with a 16-7 run through the third quarter. Junior Gus Baalman scored a team-high 19 points against North Greene to finish the WIT averaging 21.5 points per game. Classmate Morgan Baalman pitched in 15 points against the Spartans. The Warriors beat Routt 82-58 Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Western

55-44 Thursday in consolation games to set up their matchup with North Greene. Sophomore Mitchell Bick led Calhoun in both contests, scoring 32 points — the highest individual total in a single WIT game since 2002 — against Routt and adding 23 against Western. Calhoun hosted Madison in a non-conference outing Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The Warriors welcome Payson Seymour — the No. 1 Class 1A team in Illinois according to the latest Assossiated Press state rankings — to Hardin at 7:45 p.m. Monday. "Our schedule does not get any easier," Calhoun head coach Ryan Graner said. "We've got to find a way to pick up our intensity level and be locked in mentally and engaged every game."
